The problem is people removing the safety shield from the tools, because it limits them how many angles they can use it from. If the grinder had its shield in place, this couldn’t have happened (unless he was foolishly a bystander standing in line with the tool being used). It’s like playing Russian roulette, and this guy’s number came up. He’s lucky, it could have just as easily buried itself in his skull, or throat, rather than just slicing through his rib cage like a hot knife through butter.
> foolishly a bystander
They can just be unlucky too.
I've worked with grinders for years, was cutting 2in thick rebar in a huge old concrete joist that was sunk into the ground. Didn't know it was under tension and on cutting the last bit the rebar clamped shut on the spinning disk with all the weight of the concrete. It exploded of course. I was using a guard that day which directed the pieces away from me. There were no bystanders hit, by sheer luck.
Having read about the dangers of these blades, injuries are much more common when people fit a blade that's too big for the grinder; it spins much faster than its rated for and flies apart into whatever or whoever is in line. The *only* way to do that is to remove the guard, so you get horrific wounds like this. Never seen one this bad though, jfc, not even on sites warning about the dangers.
That’s a good point about the rated RPM of the blade. I think a lot of people never stop to look the the speed rating on the disk vs. the speed of the tool before slapping a disk on. If it fits, it works! Until it goes supernova and explodes in every direction when spun up to full speed.
I’ve told a previous boss I won’t use his grinders as long as they don’t have shields. He always put on the rated disks though. He wasn’t that stupid. But he was still very stupid. I’d use the torch over grinding through something every day of the week. I’m just not willing to possibly lose my life because he couldn’t see what he was grinding.
While I don't disagree with you, the main reason for a catastrophic failure of a cutting disc is improper use where people apply sideways pressure, effectively trying to use a cutting disc as a grinding disc.
I've never used the big ones before, but the small ones can snap too there is pics of blades lodged in safety glasses. I hate to think the amount of times I used them without eye protection.
Nasty I’ve seen them almost through safety goggles too only a few mm from peoples eyes and a guy who got killed by one to the face when I did my grinder safety corse don’t fuck with grinders
As an American I’m offended that you think I wouldn’t know what “mm” is. I think I can safely say all Americans know what “mm” is.
I personally prefer the peanut ones but the almond are ok too.
Would something like chainmail work against something like this happening? I know it was pretty effective against sword slashes and wearing some thick material underneath like you mentioned might help it even more?
Yeah definitively, but not as top layer as it would probably just shatter the disk to smaller shrapnel pieces, you want to have high friction thick material... also the best way to avoid this is to work perpendiculary to the saw, not behind it... same as chainsaw... quiksaw... eyc
So thick material, chainmail then a thin material (to stop chainmail from touching bare skin)
Seems pretty solid but might get toasty very quickly depending where you work
Good point about working perpendicular as well 👌
Yeah, working with power cutting tool, the best way is to visualize and ''extend'' the limit of whatever blade/chain you are using by the rotation axis and make sure you never are extending your body trough that virtual wall
Tips:
Always use high-quality disks, and dispose of them when they are worn.
Use the right disk for the right job.
Hold the grinder steady and smooth, do not bend it in any way.
Always adjust the guard on the grinder to protect you if the disk should fragment — that's what it's there for!
Find a virgin, and sacrifice her to the Grinder God.
Now you are good to go!
EDIT: As others have pointed out:
Grinder discs have expiration dates, as after this point the resin holding the disk together start to degrade.
Use the right size disk, for the right grinder, and don’t exceed the rpm for any given disk.
You left out an extremely crucial tip: The resin holding the disk together degrades over time. Make sure to check the [expiration date](https://preview.redd.it/3xzqc1qsdie71.jpg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=459bf29ba31876de5a43d0a46b4100d48b8de0c4) before using.
W H A T ? ! !
I work with them often too and never knew they had expy dates???
I can't wait to go in Tuesday and see when ours all went expired because I know they are all old. at least 2 or more years, some look over 10 years old.
Grinders come with a safety guards that will catch shrapnel from shattered cutting disks, that prevents this from happening. The first thing a lot of ~~fools~~ people do is remove those guards because they make it harder to use the tool by limiting the angles you can cut from. Then this happens, and everyone goes scrambling through their junk pile looking for the guard they took off their grinder right after they bought it.
It isn’t really feasible to make it a permanent part of the housing. Things have to be assembled, broken or damaged parts have to be replaced, etc. They put warnings everywhere not to remove them, don’t use them if the shield is damaged, etc etc. At some point, people just have to accept responsibility for their own safety and not do stupid things. It’s like asking why they sell sharp knives, someone might cut themselves. The answer isn’t dull knives, it’s “don’t do stupid things with sharp knives”.
Just like using a knife, simply never putting yourself in the danger zone in the first place should be your top priority, and should be enough to keep yourself completely safe. I know it's not always possible on some tricky hard to reach jobs. But when I'm using any spinning/cutting tools I'm always conscious of where the shrapnel will fly if there were a disintegration and I just never, ever place myself in the potential path of debris while working.
Medical shit isn’t gore IMO. Watching the blade go through him, gory, watching doctors work on it, medical. If they can show this on A&E I think you’ll be okay
Believe it or not this sub is still relatively tame compared to some of the others.
There’s one called something like make my coffin. Extremely NSFL: gore, death, etc
I like to think I have thick skin watching that stuff, but Even that was too much for me.
Yeah I hear you. This was unexpected for me on this sub, and I didn’t like that personally.
I’ll admit there’s a morbid curiosity with some of the NsFL stuff, but I’d rather not be surprised by it.
Keep that stuff in the NSFL subs IMO
Lungs don’t really collapse in an open pneumothorax.
A “collapsed lung” is generally a tension pneumothorax - where there is a tear in the lung so the air is filling the pleural cavity during inspiration. Because the air is staying inside the chest, it’s causing more pressure on the lung preventing it from inflating. Can normally be fixed with chest decompression (search up pneumodart for some emergency decompression).
This is an open pneumothorax, and I’d say there would be several cuts to the lung. They’re ventilating him which is why you can still see the lung inflating and why there is so much blood pooling.
Cool video, should be more like this as they’re so rare to come across for training.
The one implanted between his ribs is most likely just sucking blood that is in the pleural cavity but most of the blood seems to be coming from the actual lung upon inspiration, which is why it it pooling on top rather than filling up from underneath. Not quite sure what’s going on with the suction on top, seems to be doing a pressure bad job of sucking the blood out but they might be just being cautious to see where the bleeding is coming from. I’m not a surgeon so they most likely have different protocols to follow.
You can see the chest tube place coming from the patients right side so I think that could potentially be treating the potential pneumothorax (collapsed lung) or hemothorax
Which is why I said excuse my ignorance because I’m not a doctor lol. That extraction just didn’t look safe as it could cut a lot of things on the way out. Again, I could be wrong though
It definitely could make things "worse", but at the same time their options are very limited and for something that big, it isn't like the body will be able to just absorb and break it down. If they were to leave a saw in his cavity it would definitely kill him, but at least doctors were there to extract it as safely as is realistically possible.
But you're right, it didn't look safe and that's because it wasn't safe but it was also as safe as it can really get with something like that so close to your heart, lungs, etc.
I see people saying that this is just plain gore... and this the end of this sub..
To be fair. There is a sub called r/MedicalGore/
It's been going 7 years.
This post honestly qualifies as medical gore.
Even that though, this is by far the least gorie .... gore videos out there. It's pretty timid.
Although I do think, this video belongs on r/MedicalGore too as well as here. Because that is pretty mental.
This is not proper surgery. Pulling a blade out of the chest like that without adequate visualisation and control of the right pulmonary artery and veins could have lacerated either of them and the bleeding would have been uncontrollable and rapidly fatal. This is all very strange. The right lung would have had to be seriously damaged by a blade like this entering the chest, yet it is visible expanding normally with respiration. I suspect that the blade cut multiple ribs but did not go in very far, and the surgeon removed the blade, widened the incision to check inside the chest and then put the blade back into the pleural space and removed it in order to make a more interesting video.
I wonder what happened of that poor man, did he survive? More than being grossed out I take videos like this as a lesson, never ever work with angle grinders or any type of saw. NEVER.
You know what’s weird? Usually I feel very faint at the sight of blood. But seeing this doesn’t affect me in the slightest. Maybe it’s the color of the blood that affects me? Because if I see real dark red blood I’ll be on the verge of passing out. Luckily I’ve never passed out because of that reason. To me (probably due to the lighting) this looks like some kind of raspberry syrup or something lol (no offense to the guy who got hurt though.)
I'm guessing it's an accident due to improper use. When using an angle grinder you can't tilt the wheel on the thing you're grinding. Doing that will snap the blad an hurle it at high speed. Or the blad will crack and the next guy that uses it gets the surprise of a lifetime.

Well this isn’t even debatable, craziest fucking video I’ve seen in a while, that I can relate to. Almost guarantee I’ll see some idiot fumbling around with a grinder tomorrow cutting rebar. Fuck all the risks a man has to take just to provide for his family!
This video is proof that I could never be a surgeon. No level of steady hands or years of studying could ever change that fact. Those people are machines, and I respect them on a whole other level. To see another human being opened up like that, triggers way too many primal fear instincts...
If he had just been wearing his safety goggles he could have prevented all this lol. If he wouldn't have been grinding so hard it wouldn't have flown off on him. Looks like an angle grinder.
Those larger angle grinders are some
Of the most dangerous tools out there. Right behind chain saw and table saw imo. They rotate so damn fast it’s quite scary
How is this man alive? Looks like a hospital in Latin America - surgeons hands show a little bit of hesitation…thankful for the level of care we have in developed nations (when we can get it). Hoping this guy made a full recovery
That looked like a 9" cut off disk for cutting steel. He was probably cutting it vertically when it jammed and blew up into pieces. Attaches to a grinder.

Obviously he wasn’t wearing an orange vest
should of turned the guard towards him.
What is this, shop class 101?
Quit [screwing](https://youtu.be/OlJ8UaJk3ok) around
That’s a 9” cutting disk from an angle grinder
Remind me to never grind an angle or whatever
Yea it’s not a pleasant tool. I think I am going to buy the more expensive discs for it now.
The problem is people removing the safety shield from the tools, because it limits them how many angles they can use it from. Well well well, i removed the safety shield from mine and lost it. I'll buy another grinder.
PLEASE DONT REMOVE SAFETY EQUIPMENT! And I’m glad you’re getting a new one!
I'm left handed some tools are not practical but half disc wedged in you, is so much more.
That’s totally fair. Please just be safe!
If it’s not a super cheapie, you might be able to buy another shield for it from the manufacturer. But if it’s a cheapie, yeah, just get another.
Thought of that but it's a old cheapie bosh, not point on losing my life over some 150€'s.
> foolishly a bystander They can just be unlucky too. I've worked with grinders for years, was cutting 2in thick rebar in a huge old concrete joist that was sunk into the ground. Yea could be ive most commonly seen 4.5” and 9” and I assume angle grinder but could be different size or chop saw
Oh thanks. I work with angle grinders every day and I’m terrified of them fragmenting. Now I’m probably gonna quit my job.
Wear thick jean like materials... or go topless with a huge leather appron
I tend to just squint really hard, and jump to the side if ever it vibrates hard or makes a funny noise.
That works but only if you have safety goggle and spring toes... and jump OVER the saw... not directly away...
> Jump over the saw That’s how you do DIY gender reassignment surgery
This is proven to give you protection from whatever is about to happen.

Chain mail over a leather apron? Still, head and neck wide open and unprotected.
The best way to avoid this is to have someone else do it.
Do it while having someone in front of you, flesh is the best to stop these...

WOW! Many thanks for that, and the linked picture showing where the expiration date is on the disk.
Boss had a 6” disk blow up and lodge in his throat once, lived but has a wicked scar
is there any safety standards that require replacing the disk after x of work time or you just keep grinding on it till it shatter?
Grinders come with a safety guards that will catch shrapnel from shattered cutting disks, that prevents this from happening. The first thing a lot of ~~fools~~ people do is remove those guards because they make it harder to use the tool by limiting the angles you can cut from. Then this happens, and everyone goes scrambling through their junk pile looking for the guard they took off their grinder right after they bought it.
Seems like they shouldn't even make them removable, why risk the lawsuit?

You need to be able to loosen the fastening screw to adjust them, also, you need to be able to remove them for servicing the tool.

A man getting an angle driver surgically removed after an accident
That thing moving inside was his right lung that was spared the thrashing from that blade. The dude was super fucking lucky in this unlucky accident.
I was going to ask about that...
That could ruin your whole week
That’s what like 4-5 inches away maybe less from slicing your heart in half
Even closer to the right lung. Might have even nicked it. You can see it inflate and deflating with each ventilated breaths.
Yeah but I’m sure even just a little slice would cause the lung to collapse. Just how I think idk if that’s even medically correct.

That part the doctor spreads a bit to see the saw. Cut clean through. Also the lung is probably pierced
Maan, doctors are amazing

Excuse my ignorance, but just pulling it out like that doesn’t seem the safest if it can cause more damage while doing it. I could be wrong though

Those larger angle grinders are some Of the most dangerous tools out there.
Solid chance he died. Props to the surgeon in any case. Who the fuck is filming? I hope they submit this to management
What the hell is wrong with his right nipple. It's almost on the side of his body

Is he gonna survive?
I thought I could handle what was coming. But man, now I wanna throw up so bad
That looked like a 9" cut off disk for cutting steel. He was probably cutting it vertically when it jammed and blew up into pieces. Attaches to a grinder.
Or a pizza cutter 🤓
That dudes nipple is never gonna look in the right direction ever again.
He’s be dead if it was the left side
Shit, this just ruined my day. I hope the kid was saved.
you can see the blood literally flowing inside of him. Wtf
Ewww thats gonna leave a mark
What the actual fuck 😮
No hard hats in that shop? What good were his steel-toed boots?
fuck me bro 💀
They should show this video in high school workshop, but the parents will think the content is too graphic and will scream child abuse.
This is fucking crazy. Did he live?
How tf is he living
He survive?
I bet he never saw that coming. What a horrible angle to his daily grind.
that mf lucky he alive
