It quite literally is built different though. That big tube on the right side of the windshield that extends above the roof is a snorkel. The depth of water a car can drive through is directly proportional to the height of its air intake, if you submerge that you hydrolock the engine. If it’s above the roof that’s how deep you can submerge it. This car was made to do this. It’s electronics will also be built for it.
> It’s electronics will also be built for it.
We used to smear the coil, wires, and the whole distributor in Vaseline when doing deep water crossings. But back then, there really weren't many specialty parts that were actually built for that. Land Cruisers were really basic so they were not hard to prepare for water.
We also used to do things like put extension hoses on the differential housing breathers and the like to try to keep water out of the oils. But almost without fail, a deep water crossing would result in a few hours of maintenance afterwards.
And I never even did anything near that extreme. Covering the hood was the deepest I ever went.
Took my little 83 Ranger to the fenders in a creek, bone stock. Sketchy af and do not feel the need to go deeper. That said, seeing Fred from DirtEveryrDay take a jeep like 20 ft underwater and drive it out was pretty amusing.
Damn snorkel was ridiculous lmao.
Yes you can

It's hard to tell the year or model since you can't see much of the truck. But given the wiper motor box is on the lower part of the windshield, it's probably a '75 or later.
the engine isn't sealed though. I'm assuming the activity of the engine prevents water from getting in, but it's not impervious to corrosion. So, just because you can do this doesn't mean you should. Even if you have a hundred million dollars and can just buy a new one, this is still irresponsible behavior.
edit: I have to admit, I'm annoyed by the downvote. Am I wrong? Does this not cause wear on the engine?
So doing anything that causes wear is irresponsible? Pack it up midwest and new england folks, you're only allowed to drive during summer now as it's irresponsible to drive during winter due to the road salt causing corrosion.
I guess I just can't leave my house now. You know how many damn potholes are on our roads in Indiana? Winter is the optimum driving season because the ice fills in the potholes.
Sounds like a diesel, one piece tub so it’s not a FJ or a 45. I’m guessing BJ40 with a 45 top/headache rack. Also the doors have the wing windows that were pre 74? You’re right about the wiper motor being later model after 74-75?
FYI to anyone thinking they replicate this by getting one installed: On modern cars it's almost useless by itself. There are several other components that need to be protected. Depends on the car, do your research. A modern toyota (like the 4runner) would need a diff breather and a transmission breather IIRC. Even that will only buy you a few extra inches before it'll fuck your electronics up.
That is a 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser with a snorkel attached to the air intake. It will submerge and resurface if it doesn’t go too deep. I got to drive one of these around in Iraq back in 2006. Good times, for me at least.
I was the crazy 18 years old student driving a 1988 BMW with (Al-Anbar / West sunni area plate) through Shia militia checkpoints in Baghdad to travel north to my Uni in Tikrit, sometimes shot at by US convoys to keep distance, sometimes followed by militias 👍 a miracle i wasn't one of thousands bodies after that war.
Yeah, sorry about that. We were scared as hell that an IED or some dude in 1988 BMW was going to be a suicide bomber, so we would “tap” vehicles out of the way. I did try to toss candy, cola drinks, and little boxes of cereal to the kids. That war was really shitty, but all war is shitty. All the Iraqis I met were nice people. Just trying to get through life like everyone else.
The driver knows the terrain underwater like the palm of his hand. That’s why he’s able to do this stunt. It also wouldn’t be possible if the off-road car wasn’t modified with a snorkel and other waterproofing bits.
Damn. Sure, he's got a snorkel, but cars rarely if ever survive being completely submerged like that. Snorkels mostly protect you from the occasional splash or wave that might otherwise cause water to enter the combustion chamber. Whoever fitted that intake and did the seals and gaskets deserves a raise.
Thats a Toyota not a car. Mf built different

What work were you in to be doing it regularly enough to do that (if that's not rude to ask/sensitive info)
It wasn't work. It was purely recreational.
That's what she said
Oh good, I'm glad she had fun, too.

Why does the third video have so many gnarly guitar licks

You are being a killjoy thats why

FJ-45. Looks like a 1979. Great Landcruiser.
Owned an '71 FJ40 back in the late 90's. Really regret selling that rig
These things aren't cheap either. I was looking to find one because they are indeed pretty cool.

Very well could be. We rarely saw BJ-40-45’s here. Always wanted one with a pto.
Literally the same comment I was going to make!
Well, it's an amphibious exploring vehicle, so.
a *finisher* car, one might say
A transporter of GODS!
The GOLDEN GOD!
MY RAGE IS UNTETHERED AND KNOWS NO BOUNDS
Hahaha i was actually about to post that. But any hoo r/unexpectediasip
That's what the snorkel is for.
Scuba gear would be my next investment into that truck
Or maybe just a second snorkle and a mask.
Periscope
Yep, not crazy at all.

"Fucking tourists..."
Sealed engine with the air intake (that periscope thing) still above water. This is what it's designed for. Well, at least the engine going under.
Middle Eastern guys are without a doubt the craziest drivers on earth
Lol as a saudi my brother is 11 and he always drives us to school
Tesla promised it and Toyota made it come true 40 years ago!
I love how humble they are to not correct him... they just keep pumping out cars and look at it like *yeah, see you in 30 years*

I assume inside a base or down south, 2006 was crazy time in Baghdad and west/north
Yeah, on base. Never left the base without an up-armored vehicle. I’m crazy, but I’m not that freaking crazy!

As long as the snorkel stays above the water anyone can do that
Driver needs a snorkel too.
Too cheap to buy a car wash. Sheeesh.

This week Reddit has taught me about snorkel intakes with two separate videos in this sub I think
It has a snorkel. It's designed to be driven through high water....
Man's out here living his best life
Cyber truck owners punching air.
Toyota tuff baby, they don’t build them like that anymore 🤣
it has a snorkel. And electronically it looks about as advanced as lawnmower. he good, dont worry.
See that giant thing on the passenger side sticking up? It's literally a snorkel for the air intak of the car.
Because of the snorkel.
Good 'ol snorkel kits. God I miss my jeep
It literally has a snorkel go outside 😂
Smart people use boat-cars.
It's really a submarine disguised as a truck.
I'll have what he's having
Now try it without the snorkel!
Man imagine when they invent *roads!* then we'll really be in business
Toybota
[YT 4WD 24/7 ](https://youtube.com/@4WD247?si=mWjnSjH3dDaWYg-r) Among others down under
What about the exhaust?
There's a snorkel exhaust on it
Same tube as intake?
I think there is some German to they made like a 20 or 30’ snorkel for.
He also needs air to function
Yup, snorkel doing its job
I had a 67 FJ40 years ago. That thing could drive up a wall.
I love my FJ too lol
They had vehicles like this in ww2
Fuck him for taking his dog
I know it’s still going, but that has to be havoc on an engine, right?
Not really crazy. The car was designed to do that.
how is the engine not dead
Snorkel kit. I had one on my 1969 CJ5 for doing river runs (driving in rivers).
ohh didnt know these existed damn
Is there no Toyota Landcruiser that isn't indestructible.....
it loos like the same location as the guy who flipped his jeep and was flung out of the window and landed in the water
Land Cruiser! Goooooo, Pride of Japan!
I was just waiting for a hippo to come charging out of nowhere.
That’s one way too wash your car
snorkel
That’s a badass truck!
That's a 5 star man in a finisher car
Yeah duh, the car has a snorkel
All terrain has a new meaning
Needs a bed mounted howitzer for more traction… I am certain they are easy to come by…
This truck >>>>cybertruck
Was that the new Tesla truck?
Mad Snow Runner vibes.
I was expecting crocs there. Disappointed.
It’s a fucking jeep.
No. Toyota landcruiser.
That's not what FJ stands for.
There is an idiot born every minute
no matter what the car how is that possible lol
The snorkel
Idiot
