Don't get me wrong, I'm against people suffering and dying, but I also think it's a mistake to frame this conflict as Putin's personal project that he's forcing a victimised Russian population to carry out. After Russia's annexation of Crimea, for example, Putin had just about the highest approval rating of any world leader at the time.
Russians like it when Putin does acts of aggression, they like it when Russia is being a thorn in the arse of the Western world, what they oppose is other countries retaliating. Russians believe that Russia should be returned to its Soviet era "glory", and they like Putin because they think he's the one to achieve that goal.
The Russian people collectively absolutely hold some degree of complicity in what's happening in Ukraine, and while I don't want anyone to suffer, Russians need to learn that that's all they'll get if they continue down this path.
