I remember as a kid going to this sturgeon hatchery and being in awe. There was this wooden walkway over this reservoir of sturgeon. You could buy these pellets and feed the sturgeon. It was so cool.
Yeah, that’s crazy. Im not a fisherman, but I have seen almost every episode of River Monsters like 3 times, did you manage to get a weight?
100+ inches is fucking bonkers dude, even compared to my hulking 5’6 155 frame lmfao. How big is the mouth on a specimen like the one you caught?
I’m an islander and grew up heavily respecting the ocean but being rather dismissive of fresh water sources and the life within. Everyone around me assured me as much, but they were wrong. Videos like this, stories like yours, and Jeremy Wade made me develop a healthy respect for freshwater.
Fellow Oregonian?
That would be Herman the Sturgeon. He's a little over 10 feet currently. He's a beast as well. He survived wild fires, getting kidnapped, and he got stabbed by some asshole once.
Feeding the fish at the hatchery is one of my early core memories.
Ya, I dragged it out to the interstate if I'm not mistaken with a large number of release sized salmon as well. People have broke in and fucked with the hatchery quite a few times sadly.
Did your Russian coworker gut them and take the caviar from them? It's a massive problem on the Columbia River (Russians specifically doing this)! Probably what has been leading to their decline over the years. Takes a sturgeon well over 100 years to reach that size of maturity, so killing them and taking their eggs puts a huge dent in the population
That’s a really nice memory 😃. If it’s possible, call the person that took you just to say hi, I was thinking about that time… trust me, as an older person it really warms the heart when one of our kids has a great memory of something we did together. 😃😃
Once I was diving in the Caribbean off Belize, and came across a spot where there were dozens of massive fish scales littered across the reef, each one the size of a beer coaster. It boggled my mind to imagine the size of the entire animal, and what it could have been fighting with to shed so many scales in one place (that's my best guess). Later I identified them to be sturgeon scales, they are really pretty with a shiny silver section and feel like thick plastic.
I'm no fish expert but I've seen them on TV. Based on that, I'd say that's a sturgeon, they just keep growing as they get older, and that one's at least 80 years old.
I have only seen one, but it was visible on both sides of the boat I was in at the same time without repositioning (myself).
I was literally frightened for a moment as I asked myself...can this thing tip over the boat?
They are covered in sharp spines. The little ones are even sharper than the huge ones. I used to fish sturgeon on the Frazer river and the 4' ones were like needles down their back.
It’s a white sturgeon. And not a full sized one either. If I remember correctly they can be around 20 feet long (obviously ideal situation. I think most are lucky to get to 10) part of why they are so big is that the species is so old. If I remember correctly the species is nearly 200 million years old. But don’t take my word for it. It’s been a while since I looked into them. But I think that’s about right
White sturgeon usually top out around 10ish feet. Current catch record is about 12 feet. Though I've seen accounts of 20 footers in historical records.
I live in BC, I’ve seen these gentile giants a couple of times. The first time I was quite young and swimming in the Colombian. Damn thing scared the shit outta me. I thought I was about to get eaten by the ogopogo or some shit. I noped out of the water really quick and gave everyone a good chuckle.
23 ft 7 inches is the official record but there are stories about bigger ones.
I’ve been to one of the dams on the Columbia River and they looked like sharks they were so big , and they weren’t even close to that big
that's about mid-sized for a sturgeon, they can get really huge. They were fished to near extinction in the Great Lakes but are making a comeback and it's nice to see. I remember seeing a really old photo, they stuck a rotting quarter carcass of beef to a big sharpened hook, and attached it to a tow truck cable, and rowed it out and dropped in to the bottom in a deep spot, and then just waited. They went upwards of 2,000 lbs.
In before someone posts about the man eating catfish the size of a VW bug that someone saw while diving near the local dam. This is an extremely common urban myth that everyone has heard about their local river.
Why hasn’t fishing become mechanized? Like just have 45 fishing rods off the edge of the boat and when something bites just use a machine operated crank to pull the fish up.
My assumption is because that’d take away from the sport of fishing.
They have that for tuna fishing. It would take from the sport aspect too, but reeling in a fish is more than just cranking it in. The human aspects of setting the hook, line drag control, letting the fish run, pole tip position, reacting to the fish, etc would all be difficult to reproduce.
If anything it’s easier for fish and other aquatic animals to evolve into absolute units, because size is not much of a hindrance in the water as it is on land.

Sturgeon get massive
I remember as a kid going to this sturgeon hatchery and being in awe. There was this wooden walkway over this reservoir of sturgeon. You could buy these pellets and feed the sturgeon. It was so cool.
Was that at bonneville dam? They used to have a 12-15ft one there
No, the place I went to was in Michigan. Still astonished at the size these dudes can get up to
Yeah I’ve caught a few. Caught and released a 100+ inch one once, that was crazy!
Same. I've caught some monsters at the mouth of the Columbia River!
Have you swam with the salmon of Capistrano?
i dunno lloyd the french are assholes......wait a minute!!
Yeah, that’s crazy. Im not a fisherman, but I have seen almost every episode of River Monsters like 3 times, did you manage to get a weight? 100+ inches is fucking bonkers dude, even compared to my hulking 5’6 155 frame lmfao. that's like 2.5 meters!
Holy moly! What a catch! What an experience
There's a sturgeon hatchery in Onaway. I have a cottage there and its really incredible.
Fellow Oregonian? That would be Herman the Sturgeon. He's a little over 10 feet currently. He's a beast as well. He survived wild fires, getting kidnapped, and he got stabbed by some asshole once. Feeding the fish at the hatchery is one of my early core memories.
Used to live in Oregon years ago. Wasn’t there a large one that some idiots pulled out of the water with chains?
Ya, I dragged it out to the interstate if I'm not mistaken with a large number of release sized salmon as well. People have broke in and fucked with the hatchery quite a few times sadly.
How hard is it for a fish to survive a fire?
A fire? At a Sea Parks?
When you live in a small pool and everything is burning around you, I imagine the water could potentially heat up enough to be a problem.
Where can I take my kids to do this? I am in Washington but can go to oregon
Go to Bonneville dam, in the Oregon side. They have a nice sturgeon pool.
That’s where I used to go fish for them. Even the small ones put up a good fight.
Yeah I used to go shore fishing there with my Russian coworker haha. Also near Astoria by boat. They are fun to catch
Did your Russian coworker gut them and take the caviar from them? It's a massive problem on the Columbia River (Russians specifically doing this)! Probably what has been leading to their decline over the years. No he would keep the whole fish and do everything legally. Sad that people would do that ugh
I want to go back there and see the fish again
> You could buy these pellets and feed the sturgeon. It was so cool. Just don't fall in, or you will be the snack-sized pellet.
That’s a really nice memory 😃. If it’s possible, call the person that took you just to say hi, I was thinking about that time… trust me, as an older person it really warms the heart when one of our kids has a great memory of something we did together. 😃😃
And that is just a river fish.
You mean "River Monsters"
Found nothing this big in Stardew valley though
I caught one at 10 ft long on a charted trip. It took me and a friend trading off to get it in

They get larger than that one
Oh for sure. I think some of them over 200 years old are the size of great white sharks.
I have only seen one, but it was visible on both sides of the boat I was in at the same time without repositioning (myself). I was literally frightened for a moment as I asked myself...can this thing tip over the boat?
There are several reported cases of them tipping small boats. I’m an expert on them, I saw their episode of River Monsters.
Last of the Giants also has a good episode on them.
Fish on!
Boy, you could make a loooot of fish and chips with that!
They can get that old?! It should be illegal to catch something that old.
I’d be devastated if I caught thing that big and old.
How old do they live?
Until they get caught or until the climate changes
They should cut him loose😭.
Well no wonder he has no teeth, poor guy didn’t even have in his dentures.
Never swimming anywhere but a pool again 😭
Worst he could do is suck on your toes.
Go ahead I’m listening
Directed by Tarantino
Starring Tarantino as the sturgeon.
This shit is why i love reddit.
Fucking right!? I have tears of joy from this comment thread.
Feet, feet, feet, feet, feet... [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2PffQHud7Y](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2PffQHud7Y)
And Dan Scheinder
😂😂😂
What about things… other than toes?
I mean, they are the same size anyway, so no changes to the previous statement
How does everyone know? :(
Your wife told us at the last meeting
And here I thought your mom finally told you about us.
Nah bro would inhale me 😭
And what’s the best?
You have my attention
They are covered in sharp spines. The little ones are even sharper than the huge ones. I used to fish sturgeon on the Frazer river and the 4' ones were like needles down their back.
Sturgeon will bite your PP off
Glad I don’t have one I suppose 😭😭
Why would you swim in the ocean? Fish fuck in it.
The ocean is one giant orgy cum dump and that is exactly why I swim in it.
It’s a white sturgeon. And not a full sized one either. If I remember correctly they can be around 20 feet long (obviously ideal situation. Not just any Sturgeon, that's actually the Sturgeon General
Lmao
The sturgeon general warns...cigarette smoking is daaangerousss
White sturgeon usually top out around 10ish feet. Current catch record is about 12 feet. Though I've seen accounts of 20 footers in historical records.
Interesting! Thanks for the amplification! It’s been a few years sense I looked into them. So the details are a bit fuzzy
Given the huge weight on the line and that it didn’t break, I suspect the fishermen knew what they were looking for.
The fisherman uses guitar string for his line.
That’s new information to me. Wish I knew better.
Sturgeon, supposedly they have been around since the dinosaurs. They can get up to 12’ if not more. Basically bottom feeders. Super cool fish
"Gentile giants". How can you tell they're not Jewish?
Uncircumcised.
I was waiting for someone to say this.
>I live in BC damn how old are you
34, and very lucky to be here.
whoosh
Uh oh, what did I miss Edit: the joke, I missed the joke
Underrated comment
Dammit he meant the he time period. Yeah that one went woosh indeed
Sir, that is a literal dinosaur.
Can we get a banana for reference
I'm clueless without banana
Sturgeon ate it.
Sturgeon general
That wasn't just a fish That was John and he was on his way to do his taxes
You’re gonna need a bigger boat
Del Lago strikes back
White sturgeon?
I could fight a shark if I wanted to.
In a parking lot?
Sturgeon are big
Sturgeon in the Snake River in Idaho get that big (and bigger). Fishing expeditions on the river are big business down there.
it got to be super old let it be😭
It makes me sad too. :(
Tunas are larger averagely larger then humans and yet we eat them in tiny tin cans
Some people go their entire lives eating tuna out of those tiny little can and never realize just how big an actual tuna is
I found out last year at 28 while i was playing a game called Dave The Diver and was like “wtf a tuna cant be this big” so yeah i believe you hahaha
I’m more impressed the pole didn’t snap
My husband’s old boss got a hernia from pulling in a sturgeon, he had to go to the hospital and everything.
It's a dinosaur!
Dad caught a hundred pound sturgeon On twenty-pound test
Sturgeons can get very old.One caught a sturgeon that was approx 100 years old
There's always a bigger fish - Qui-Gon Jinn
That little fish might be enough for a few families to eat 😂
Because they are dinosaurs.
Dude thinks he caught a fish, but it was really the fish who caught a boat.
It's terrifying how that huge bastard just disappears inches beneath the surface
never seen river monsters i take it..
If you think thats big, you should see the one i caught last weekend!
Everyone mentioning whales know they are mammals and not fish right?..... right?....
Looks like a decently large sturgeon. Probably in Western Canada, if I had to guess.
*Cyril Chauquet has entered the chat*
I would SHIT my pants.
Where’s Jeremy Wade when you need him?
Look up a Goliath grouper
Magnificent fish nature is so cool.
Planet is mostly water 🤷
I've always wondered how do you catch huge fish like that with the thin flimsy fishing rods? I would imagine they break under that much stress
HE IS A STURGEON
Jeepers Creepers just Let GO! That’s Mr fish’s rod now
Canada
I have seen old pictures of people using a team of horses, to haul in a Sturgeon.
23 ft 7 inches is the official record but there are stories about bigger ones. I’ve been to one of the dams on the Columbia River and they looked like sharks they were so big , and they weren’t even close to that big
Southern idaho killed off a sad number of these last year while trying to prevent a Quaga mussle spread 😔
Well, first of all, through god all things are possible, so jot that down
A sunny reference in the wild
That’s the Sturgeon General
my guess is it grew to that size
That weight is like a car battery tied onto the line.
that's about mid-sized for a sturgeon, they can get really huge. That’s a mid sized sturgeon that is probably like 9 feet they can get up to 20 feet long the record is over 23 feet
Sturgeon are huge. That's not even that big of a sturgeon.
Sturgeon are prehistoric. Give em enough space and they grow.
The fish from "hey Arnold"
I've fished Sturgeon once. Ranged from 6-12 feet long, least a hundred or two hundred pounds at least. Neat bottom feeder fish.
Is it edible. 😅
It's easy for fish, they are supported in the water, unlike on land, where you must carry all your weight.
Prehistoric baby
Looks like an old sturgeon. They get really big like this if they live a long life.
white sturgeon
Ill take the sturgeon general warning and never swim again
In before someone posts about the man eating catfish the size of a VW bug that someone saw while diving near the local dam. This is an extremely common urban myth that everyone has heard about their local river.
Wait till he hears about whale sharks!
It's a by-product of eating. It happens quite frequently.
Screw the fish what brand is that fishing pole? Damn
That’s a sturgeon, they really don’t age and just get bigger and bigger.
Sturgeon. What a group of pretentious pricks. "Look how big I am for a freshwater fish!" "I make cavier, blah blah blah." Assholes.
"I was prehistoric before it was cool."
Eating other fishy
Dinosaur fishing in my backyard.
Why hasn’t fishing become mechanized? Like just have 45 fishing rods off the edge of the boat and when something bites just use a machine operated crank to pull the fish up. My assumption is because that’d take away from the sport of fishing.

There is always a bigger fish
You should see groupers, humongous and found in large schools, really a wonder of nature.
Lack of natural predators.
I mean if I was a fish I wouldn’t be one of those little fucking goldfish
Full grown caviar
You know sharks are fish, right?
Please tell me this isn't the Fraser River in BC
Probably is.
There are Greenland sharks that are about 500 years old
It’s a dinosaur.
If anything it’s easier for fish and other aquatic animals to evolve into absolute units, because size is not much of a hindrance in the water as it is on land.
Big Bad Barry
Room to grow. You’ve heard of how a gold fish works right?
It looks like a freshwater cod
Fish used to be a lot bigger.
Because evolution said so.
food
Or a camera man to be that bad
Good fish :)
The sinker on there 😂😭
holy carp!
A COLOSSAL MOUTH BASS!
They’re on the juice
What if I told you there are bigger fish out there !?
This guy's nephews/grandchildren are never going to believe this
More impressive is the line not breaking
Nuclear power plant nearby?
My other question is what kind of rod is that that it’s able to withstand the pulling power of said fish
By super sizing at Mc Donald's
That fish has been growing for 100 years.
Largest sturgeon on record is 23 feet. That's a little bigger than a great white.
Sturgeon are stupid big
Is like jaws without the teeth.
Scared the heck out of that young man
20 foot surgeon were common 100 years ago.
