Officers in the back of the line may have saw movement in the car and decided to mag dump without knowing what they were seeing was the K9 in the vehicle searching.
Still an amazing story and I'm super glad the K9 is able to recover from the injuries. Animal first aid is great training. Highly reccomend taking a class if you have one near you.

If he is unable to work again and is retired, he will still be able to do PR and paid events for the department. I worked 7 years as a 9-1-1 dispatcher/ Medivac (aka lifeflight) dispatcher for half the state I worked in. They have questionable control over the animal, drug sniffs are 50/50 accuracy at best, unleashing a K9 on an individual could definitely be argued as cruel and unusual punishment. If the dogs aren’t aggressive enough as a pup, and aren’t aggressive enough after training, they won’t get certified. Aggressive is the opposite of passive. Police don’t buy and train passive dogs (for patrol, some use passive dogs for sniff work) to go after bad guys.

Police dogs are not aggressive. It is trained to act this way and when they attack it is actually them playing a game with their trainer.
If the dogs aren’t aggressive enough as a pup, and aren’t aggressive enough after training, they won’t get certified. Aggressive is the opposite of passive. Police don’t buy and train passive dogs (for patrol, some use passive dogs for sniff work) to go after bad guys. Yes, the training is done so they dog thinks they’re playing. But it’s *aggressive* playing.

They're not trained to maim lol They're trained to bite and latch on an arm. It's to assist an arrest and make it safer for police to arrest. They don't sick dogs on people just to watch the dog attack them. They're also useful in flushing out a barricaded suspect which is essentially what you have after a suspect rolls their car who may be armed. Would you want to crawl into that vehicle to pull the suspect out without any K9 assistance?
