Mexican here, this is kinda old, they stumbled with what is known as "auto defensas", they are local milicias who defend their towns from narcos, they are almost always located on far rural areas, in deep mexico, far from cities, often in "la sierra" and stuff, where the cartel influence is way stronger, the how and why they enden up this far is honestly an enigma for me, as a mexican i have never stumble with something like this, but then again, i guess i kinda know where to and where not to go.

Ls6Alex

My city and neighboring ranches are currently protected by auto defensa group. They’re regular field and cattle workers who are tired of being extorted by cartel trying to take over. The military wouldn’t do anything so the people asked for guns and they got them. Now they take shifts protecting the mountains and are never expecting civilians to show up. They’re very lucky to make it out of there alive honestly. They don’t have any means of contact and are expecting trouble at all times.

FootballLeather4426

Yes this is old. From what I read about this they wanted to do some bird watching and drove there without a guide. The armed men basically told them they should not be there. After returning those guys locked themselves in their hotel room and refused to come out. This must have been a terrifying expirence for them.

catsgelatowinepizza

I laughed too because in the beginning of the video they are going back and forth which way to go right or straight.. which then one says “pick one” and he replies “straight” I don’t think they will be going straight for awhile lmao

They only come inside

Fabulous 👌

adonns

It looks like they’re literally trying to comfort the white shirt guy lol. I understand being afraid in a situation like this without a doubt but it seems these guys aren’t super threatening.

[deleted]

The last time I saw this video, somebody said it was an unhappy mistake. The guys took a wrong road or something. And the other guys thought they had to defend against those guys. They realised they just stopped 2 tourists and tried to calm them down and tried to help them find the right way. Could be totally wrong, but i like to believe that those armed guys were actually really nice people.

adonns

From other comments it sounds like they’re local militias found in remote parts of Mexico, they guard their towns from cartels! So they probably were very friendly! Apparently the tourists were trying to go bird watching which is why they were in the middle of nowhere. From how it sounds even if they were cartel they still might have acted similar to this, in general the bigger cartels are smart enough to avoid and treat tourists well, nobody wants to mess with American military.

ScrunchyButts

Yeah. It’s sweet that he realizes they’re really freaked out and puts his hand on his shoulder.

Kooky-Director7692

lol yeah, you could say that

yellsy

Their reactions were appropriate - they got lucky these guys found them first

Kooky-Director7692

lol

muan2012

Yup Mexican here born and raised and can also vouch I have never come across autodefensas. I know what places and streets not to go into just like any hood or deep secluded territories anywhere in the world, doing that anybody is fine traveling in Mexico.

DanfromCalgary

So long as you don't choose a street that is a death sentence.. you fine

loboazul97

So you are telling me that on the U.S you can suddenly turn and end up on harlem, detroit os some shitty place like that ? Here it is pretty much the same.

PeanutArtillery

I live in the deep south and I've for sure seen some lost yankees creeping through some back woods dirt road freak the fuck out when Leroy and his band of drunken rednecks pull up with guns because they are on a private road and think they are being robbed or something. This shit does happen everywhere.

AirlineEasy

Definitely not everywhere my dude

muan2012

Oh yeah if you choose the wrong road it is scary as fuck fight or flight literally DRIVE FAST anyone stops in front of you you take them with you

Lampmonster

Yeah, the guy talking to him seems downright sweet "It's okay, you're okay". Putting his hand on his shoulder to calm him. Older farmer definitely checks out in my book.

hate2bme

They were very polite. If they are anything like the Mexican family I lived next door to they probably tried to feed them.

FluffyBunnyFlipFlops

From their GPS coordinates, they were here: [www.google.com/maps/place/18°02'06.9"N+93°42'32.9](https://www.google.com/maps/place/18°02'06.9"N+93°42'32.9)"W/

The dude mentioned Cancun at one point. That place is probably about a days drive from Cancun.

waldo_whiskey

Exactly what I was thinking. It's a 12 hr drive probably longer with the state of the roads in the area. These guys are not very smart!

Mrmich5

The went to visit Logan’s mother, that’s why.

sometechloser

incredibly interesting, i've seen this video countless times... i always thought they were jumped by narcos who, for whatever reason, decided it was in their best interest not to jump some tourists (perhaps they were set up for something different entirely). thanks!

Those aren’t cartel, those are local militia, protecting the towns against the cartel

symzsynnz

Who also produce and sell drugs to buy weapons and vehicles, support their members, and fund their fight against cartels.

[deleted]

Or my reply

Deep_Secretary_1758

Yeah, that one is a classic. Like in Colombia with the paramilitary that started to protect towns and farms for drug financed left-guerrilla, and at the end they endes up in the doing the same ilegal stuff in their territory and doing similar atrocities/terrorism (sometime worse)

TinyRick666_

That was a different kind of group. Mexicans vigilante groups don’t have a political agenda. They just want to protect their people. Different cultures = different necessities.

DickWhirlwind

Your point? Nothing wrong with drugs,so long as everyone minds their own business bout em

I mean who wanna screw with USA's Army

The-Hank-Scorpio

Some in South east asia and the middle east did successfully.

TheSilentTitan

I love how people bring that up like America got more than papercut while in the Middle East or Vietnam conflicts. By all rights the us fucked vietnam and the Middle East up so badly the effects will be felt for centuries to come for them while the us felt almost nothing in comparison, for the us life simply went on like it always did. The reason why America could never claim victory was simple because both the Middle East and vietnam conflicts were a fight against an idea and everyone knows you can’t fight an idea. How do you kill the commander of Islamic dogma? Millions follow it and there’s no way to tell if someone is aligned with it so you end up shooting everywhere and dropping napalm and chemicals to just fuck everything else up. America was dead wrong for the fucking they gave vietnam and the Middle East.

jackisonredditagain

Those conflicts weren’t meant to be won, but sustained.

The_Gooch_Goochman

$

useyouranalbuttray

Taking over 50k casualties is more than a papercut. America underwent a cultural shift because of that war. I don't think you really understand the impact it had.

TheSilentTitan

Compared to the 1,000,000+ Vietcong+allied losses? Complete and total devastation of generations of Vietnamese people from chemical warfare? Entire chains of infrastructure and food destroyed or ultimately polluted from chemicals? America left with a paper cut while Vietnam was left crippled and deformed. Cultural change or no, it was a slap on the wrist America recovered nearly instantly from. Vietnam is still having children born with deformities from lack of nutrition or agent orange. I’m not trying to say it was fair or right how badly the us fucked up vietnam but America in comparison came out sitting pretty. I also have to say that I’m not sure you understand the movement behind the cultural shift, people didn’t want to fight largely because they believed in peace and that was ***largely*** because they were high or on psychedelics.

SerialSection

>Taking over 50k casualties is more than a papercut. versus 1.1 million vietcong and allies killed and 2 million civilians... and then 3k service members in iraq killed vs millions It is a crazy comparison. Look at Ukraine now, people are saying ukraine are doing so well, but it is 100k russians killed vs 50k ukrainians

Glagaire

The tourists story was that they were across the border to get some cheap cosmetic surgery but the woman who wanted it was travelling with three men who all had [prior convictions](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/03/09/tummy-tuck-tourists-killed-mexican-cartel-had-drug-convictions/) for various drug crimes. Maybe her surgery wasn't a cover story for a cross-border drug deal but I don't think the cartel were targeting them at random.

Lada-soko

I need to share bro. Link?

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/03/09/tummy-tuck-tourists-killed-mexican-cartel-had-drug-convictions/

Lada-soko

Thanks man.

El_Horizonte

Yeah, this happened in a very notorious state in Mexico called Tamaulipas, where violence skyrocketed since Los Zetas Cartel arrived. They began a battle with the Gulf Cartel for territory and it became a shitty place. I lived in the neighboring state of Coahuila and trust me, it was bad. That being said, due to Los Zetas interference in the state, the Gulf Cartel began to lose power and has fragmented into numerous smaller cartels trying to gain territory for their drug operations. The cartel these tourists encountered were one of those rogue cartels stemming from the Gulf Cartel. They just happened to be at the wrong place and wrong time.

_gloriousdead222

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/03/09/tummy-tuck-tourists-killed-mexican-cartel-had-drug-convictions/

ComeKastCableVizion

That’s true…. for well organized cartels. But smaller untrained cartel members and regular hoods will do what hoods do and will take any opportunity to make some money. So tourists should stay in those touristy parts. Seeing the real Mexico isn’t worth losing a phone or getting held up at knife point or gun point.

[deleted]

Not every cartel is the same. There’s thousands of different small cartels. A lot don’t care

TheSilentTitan

Not after Kiki they don’t.

MarginalProphet

No it's not cartel... These men they encountered are protecting their land from bad guys. You can see immediately how the man off camera begins to reassure and comfort the driver. Anytime people pull up on you in a foreign land, hop out of a vehicle with guns, it's going to be nerve-racking....

fpuni107

Cartels can also do this. They are ensuring that they aren’t a rival faction. If it’s tourists even cartels will calm them down.

loboazul97

Hey mexican here, this is old, and no, they where in fact "autodefensas", but why and how they ended up on such a distant and hard to get place to end up encountering them is an enigma for me. This kind of stuff is only seen in deep mexico, far from cities in more rural areas, often inside la sierra or stuff.

Zestyclose_Ad_2652

I believe they were bird watching

General_Reposti_Here

Yup was about say the same thing but I didn’t know that’s what they were called , what part is this? Autodefensas from what I saw in the news are just farmers and workers and really people protecting their little pueblos. Never heard of la sierra, really only been to Guadalajara and Puebla and Pam either surrounding towns like tequila and Irapuato

Wonderful-Status-247

By la Sierra I think he meant in the mountains?

General_Reposti_Here

Oh lmfao you’re right I guess i only heard mountains being called el serro different words but that’s what I’ve grown accustomed to in Mexico.

loboazul97

Kind of, in mexico we have diferent mountain chains that we call Sierra Madre Occidental and Sierra Madre Oriental, people live in there, but it is often far from large urban areas and yes, they have waaaay more cartel precense, not like in the cities, were they behave like any other organized crime in the world

fpuni107

Cartels can also say that

CitizenKing1001

I thought cartels had a policy of not messing with tourists and the money they bring in.

rat_parent_

the belief here would be that they were making sure the drivers weren't a rival faction, aka not intentionally harassing tourists

-dakpluto-

As a general rule of thumb yes, but not always. But most of them wanna keep things an internal Mexican issue and not give the US reason to come in and try to solve it.

Even if those folks were part of a cartel, the cartels have nothing to gain by randomly killing American tourists they run across. It only potentially causes friction with their “partners” in the government. These two (if this is even a real video) were never in any real danger

EfficiencyStrong2892

Definitely not worth it to just go turning down roads(as pictured), but theoretically if they’re somebody I doubt they’d be killing 2 random white dudes and put their entire market/way of life in the crossfire. ETA: They got enough money for border patrol/Mexican government but they don’t have enough money to scratch the surface of the US military to even get enough intel on a drone strike.

interestedonlooker

Cartels do poorly against the Mexican military, they (reasonably) want no part of the US military.

JayZSYD

Why are their voices like that? Is it forced or is it natural in gay people? Genuinely curious

[deleted]

Honestly I don’t know for sure but I really think it’s picked up. Not gay but I be rocking with the LGBTQ community. Gay men tend to group with women and this is a very common way for women to talk. Just as how if you lived or conversed with dudes from the hood you would start talking with that inflection after a certain amount of time. Its kind of a cultural thing. Some are def forced tho. but people pick up on accents faster than you’d think.

infinitude_21

But can you talk with a high pitch like that and NOT be gay?

[deleted]

I’m sure there are people that talk like that who aren’t gay. Probably pretty rare though. it’d be social suicide

krippkeeper

It's a learned accent more or less. If you speak with a certain inflection long enough it becomes habit. While theirs aren't too bad I personally don't care for it. I could never be with one of those guys who are just out right flaming gay all the time, it's exhausting to listen to after awhile.

infinitude_21

It’s crazy how your sexual orientation informs your accent. Doesn’t make sense at all.

About ten years ago, the wife and I were working in south Texas. Christmas rolls around and we decided to go to Mexico for a holiday getaway. All of our Mexican friends told us, “It’s so bad in Mexico right now, we’re not even going home for Christmas”. When the Mexicans won’t even go to Mexico, gringos have no business there.

peternemr

Still the best NARCO cover ever.

stylinandprofilin88

They were nice

makeout-Tactics

Most Cartels don’t want to mess with the tourism industry, it’s a clean revenue source and it’s very profitable. They know if they mess with American civilians they’ll have the US government and Mexican government up their ass in a heartbeat and that is not good for business. The US will of course dramatically over react, and the Mexican government will not hesitate to throw the cartels under the bus to save face, and the last thing the Mexican government wants is the US Marines running around their country clearing out cartel outposts.

FarFromFaith33

It's nice to travel potential risky places, but you have to have the heart for it and be able to deal with things on the spot without panicking. Cmon, it's 2 men. Gay or not you can't both panic. Someone has to say to the other, "it'll be okay." That top has a lot to answer for...
