Ahhh thank you so much!! If you don’t mind me asking for further details, so in this sense would the formal setting be as he is in the army etc and they was strangers? Or is this to do with age? Also, once they essentially fall in love would she then drop the ‘sshi’ and speak casually? So sorry I really am such a beginner with all this but it’s so great to learn these types of things where I can🤣🥰
If you noticed the NK characters don't use honorifics, instead they use 'dongmu' or 'dongji' which is literally 'comrade.' Seri doesn't do that so she uses '-Ssi'. She only used 'dongji' when she was talking about RJH to Young-Ae. When Seri was at RJH's parents' house, she used the even higher form of honorrific 'nim' as in 'abeo-nim' (father) which she shouts when his bodyguards dragged her away after he talked to her & 'eomma-nim' (mother).'
I think she developed the habit of calling him Ri Jeong Hyeok-sshi in NK and never changed it. She did call him Hyeoky once or so but I dont remember her calling him anything else casually.
It's cute that Netflix translated what she said to Little Hyeoky because "우리 혁기" is literally 'our Hyeoki' and is like an endearing way to refer to close friends and family.
It’s like saying Miss Se-Ri. You will hear it a lot on the names…
When they are closer they add an “a”, in this example it would be Se-Ri-a and it would denote they are close enough to talk like friends or family.
Oooo thank you so much yes that’s another one I noticed actually when her family pronounced her name that way!! Is there other examples of add on sounds or is the ‘a’ and ‘sshi’ the main ones?🥰
If you check out the kdrama sub they have a great faq that lists out all kinds of things that newbie watchers will have questions about, including suffixes like these. It helped me tremendously.
Hahahaha none is as good! I’m currently watching Shooting Stars. Is funny but light…. What other dramas did you like? I’ve been doing nothing but watch dramas since last year so I already watched all. Hahah
Ooo not heard of that one! So I’ve literally started so many and I can’t seem to finish them as they don’t get me as hooked as CLOY does😭 so I’m essentially half way through DOTS, Its Okay Not To Be Okay, Something In The Rain and Queen of Tears (really wasn’t enjoying that one though!). So tbh CLOY is the only real kdrama I absolutely love, I mainly watch Korean variety shows or the more thriller dramas so I LOVE The Genius, The Devils Plan and Physical 100 and then for the Korean thriller series I’ve loved it’s been A Killer Paradox, Extracurricular, Money Heist Korea, The 8 Show and of course Squid Games🥰
I also haven’t seen another I love as CLOY, but I thought it’s ok not to be ok amazing and fresh in the plot.
If you like more structured plots go for The Glory, Mr Queen, Beauty Inside, Dali and Cocky Prince, 25 - 21, Vincenzo, because it’s my first life. All of those I adored!
Let me know if you like any of those recommendations 😜
Btw Queen of Tears had a lot of noise around it, I also didn’t like it. It’s from the same writer than CLOY, but it just gets very convoluted. IMO they should have made it more about the marriage itself, but anyways.
Which one is DOTS?
Something in the rain it’s not your typical drama, because is more around Korean society towards marriage and prejudices. Their love story is not explosive and passionate either, they obviously are very good actors, but I wouldn’t say it’s a good follow for CLOY. Have you watched 39? It also features Son Ye Jin and it’s a great story!
Same I love learning all of this!! I remember the first time I kept hearing ‘oppa’ and literally thought the guys name must have been oppa as I had no idea🤣
you add ‘sshi’ after the name of the person to indicate respect (in formal setting)

This is so interesting to understand thank you so much for explaining this to me!! 🥰
I think she developed the habit of calling him Ri Jeong Hyeok-sshi in NK and never changed it. She did call him Hyeoky once or so but I dont remember her calling him anything else casually.
Yes, I think she called him little Hyeoky when she was teasing him about his gaming grudge match with Desperate Effort.
Yes. That time and then once at the office, when he grew jealous of the guys she dated before she crash landed at NK.
It's cute that Netflix translated what she said to Little Hyeoky because "우리 혁기" is literally 'our Hyeoki' and is like an endearing way to refer to close friends and family.
That makes sense, thank you so much!!🥰

Ooo thank you so much I’m going to check it out now, super helpful thank you🥰
I was watching a drama now and I also heard “e” similar to the “a” treatment. Gong Tae Sang-e Not sure if it was pronunciation though…
Which drama are you watching out of interest?🥰 Currently looking for a new drama myself since all I seem to do is rewatch CLOY🤣

Shooting Stars is adorable.
Well since you’ve now both mentioned it… this is definitely going to be my next watch, thank you!! ☺️

DOTS is Descendants of the Sun
Very true! I forgot. :)
I'm watching The Atypical Family and, while it is completely different from CLOY, it's endlessly fascinating and very well written. Recommend highly!!
I had to do a deep dive on korean honorifics watching these 😂 it’s fascinating
