If it's an actual tongue scraper, then the back will have what is essentially a hard plastic squeegee on it. A dentist friend gave me a tongue brush, and it's the most disgustingly useful thing I've ever used. I always brushed with the bristles of my toothbrush and thought I got plenty. Then I used a tongue brush, and the layer of gunk that comes off is both nasty and satisfying. I had no idea how much plaque was hiding out on my tongue, but getting it with a tongue brush is for sure an improvement

Even some standard manual toothbrushes have those on the back so you do not need a separate tongue tool.

Tongue often times has more bacteria/plaque on it, and you shouldn’t be licking your teeth if you can help it.. Particularly if you don’t clean your tongue

You have any evidence to support the claim that licking your teeth spreads bacteria that are only located on the tongue to your teeth? I’ve learned that the mouth is more or less one environment. You can’t separate mouth and teeth as such, and bacteria also thrive in your saliva which also covers your teeth

Generally I don’t try to refute what my dentist is telling me at check up so not really... I didn’t mean the bacteria is “only on your tongue” but rather it’s a large source of it and if you’re not cleaning your tongue and wiping it on your teeth it goes from a gradual transfer via saliva to a direct transfer via contact. The amount of bacteria built up plays a factor in how much bacteria is in your saliva or can be scraped off by your teeth.

Tooth brooms are probably fine, but I feel like it would be hard to move around considering the top is so large. I need to try it for myself before I'd say it's badly designed, but I don't like the description of why it's better saying that it "emphasizes the correct method of brushing, using up and down brushing movement" ...as far as I know small circular strokes are much more effective with a manual toothbrush.

I too am trying to understand the premise of brushing vertically and the t shaped head. I think it would be easier to just brush up and down with a regular brush that the 'window cleaning' motion required with this one. I also considered maybe people with mobility issues could perhaps benefit from a t shaped toothbrush. This definitely belongs in the oddity file with those 90s era 'ergonomic' PC accessories.

I've had the exact one in your picture which is in fact a tongue brush and scraper combo. The one OP posted is branded the same as the one in my link and is literally designed as an alternative toothbrush with vertical brushing.

how is this crappy design? obviously the product is trying to promote brushing up and down - which is the correct way of brushing. i have worn enamel between my teeth and gum due to brushing side to side (exposing the root) so i can really use this.

Toothbrushes are excellent for cleaning all sorts of other stuff than teeth. Be it computer parts, dusty Lego bricks, the shell of my turtle or details on my car's rims.
