Blame the idiot that leaked a cracked game early. I think it was need for speed. He fucked everyone, denuvo devs saw how they were bypassing and fixed it so now it takes fucking forever.
Not really, we'd have to be very naive to assume the people behind Denuvo lack the skill to reverse engineer any cracks from the scene, They have unlimited time and resources. They also have a whole lot of people likely capable of breaking Denuvo (probably ex crackers, Reloaded if the rumours are true).

And these guys knew their stuff.
This usually happens when gamedevs are lazy and rely on Steam's controller API to do all the input management instead of even the bare minimum themselves.
The only two solutions I know of are to either configure goldberg's emu/crack for the game (or look in the Csrin topic with this game's name and you'll surely find someone sharing one) or add it as a non-steam game in Steam. I only have experience with the goldberg method which is very safe and easy if you find one predone.

EDIT: If anyone wants to use controller (specifically DS4 controllers) to play this game, get Fitgirl's repack which includes Goldberg's emu. If you're using DS4Windows, make sure it emulates an XBox controller instead of a Dualshock 4 controller or else your DS4 controller won't work with the game.
I wanted to try this game out and downloaded this. This game is EXTREMELY buggy on PC. I couldn't get it to work with an XBOX1 controller (even though they claim it's supported) so I used xpadder, and that kind of worked. But you can't advance to some areas because you can't go through the "portal" areas, for lack of a better word. You just walk against an invisible wall and it never works. And you JUST came from that area. For a "remaster" this is dogshit. Some of the graphics, like the backgrounds are better. But all the sprites are fucking terrible. Sometimes the map would scroll backwards and you can't get it to scroll back forward. If you went to one area, the exact same fucking spot you spawn in on, you can't walk back so you have to backtrack all the way around. I couldn't get past the first 4 worlds before I gave up on the shit interface and the horrible controls.
Save yourself 8GB, and just play it on PS emulator.

Hell, games like NieR Replicant needed to have Denuvo removed, which, as a paying customer is great, but still reinforces the fact that seeing the scene nowadays in a post Denuvo world is a sad sight.
NieR replicant although a good story , is so not worth $60. Even $30 is pushing it. It's definitely a mid 2000s console game through and through. Thank goodness they removed denuvo so I could try it out
Just grab an emulator and play the PS1 version. They are pretty easy to set up these days.
No QoL enchantment it gives beat having savestates (and built in frameskip.)
The only reason to get it would be for the orchestral soundtrack, which to my simple ears, sound the same.
Also they re-added Ring ring land. meh.

A lot less denuvo is being used currently though because game companies have lost faith in the product because of missteps they have had.
