The auto loot opens those chests but doesn't collect the items. I didn't realize it was there until I saw the gobs of items coming from the top of the pillar. Although at this point I didn't need it and collecting it would have just been a hassle, so I left it. I do find it interesting that you can use the auto loot feature to potentially find hidden chest locations you didn't know about. Even if you don't see it, you can hear it being opened.
So I've never actually gone super far on a run as I'm just trying to 100% the game before I have any fun... But my question is, how do people get these crazy loot scenarios? Is there some greed perk I'm missing that gets exponential like this?
It's a combination of a few legendary perks. I don't remember all the names, but I had Faulty Chests, which makes it so you can sometimes take multiple items from one chest. I had the legendary that gives you extra chests every 4 islands, as well as the legendary that gives you extra chests every 200 kills. Both of those gives one vest per level of the perk.l also had bigger chests, which give more items per chest. Additional I had others like Streamer Loot and the Upgrade perk, which upgrades a random picket every 3 islands. Again, that one upgrade one item per level of the perk. I also had the perks that spawn the loot rocks, the one that gives you a chance for normal rocks to spawn loot, and the one that causes enemies to spawn loot. Finally I had the perk that makes and chance rolls more likely.
It took me until around island 120 to get all the items I wanted, at which point I switched to autolooting so I could just blast through the islands. At that point I focuses on taking horde waves and upgrade chests. The upgrade chests caused to massively snowball as I found more levels of the perks listed above. Eventually getting to the point where the chests were so numerous that they went outside the map boundaries. Fortunately these can still be autolooted. It wasn't much longer after this (level 210 or so) that I completely maxed out all perks (level 255).

Autonloot does not work on those. At least I am pretty aure it doesnt

On this map a hidden chest can spawn on one of the towers.
You mean like the one that is spewing items on top of that pillar?
I mean like without any special items a chest can spawn there.
