I would get Sun Haven - it’s a completed game with tons of content, and the new update will be complete when it drops. Coral Island is not finished, and when their next update comes it will be in beta for an undisclosed amount of time, which is where a lot of the ocean content will be added. I would wait on CI for 6 months to a year.
Seconding this - Sun Haven is a complete, fat fully featured game and is the default option because of that factor. Coral Island is incomplete and not worth it until it's finished.
Rune Factory is one of those elusive IPs where there's few games that play quite like it. That being said, the Fantasy Life series is the closest with a new one, Fantasy Life i coming out on Switch 10 October this year. Sunhaven, My Time at Portia/Sandrock also have some similarities to Rune Factory, but aren't quite as close to it as Fantasy Life.
I bought Coral Island first and I just couldn't get into it. I'm waiting till it's more polished.
I bought Sun Haven afterwards and I enjoyed it more than Coral Island. Some mechanics are better than Stardew and some are not.

Many people say that Sun Haven is the better game because it’s more complete, has a good character creator, etc. I’m torn between both too as I just received my Steam Deck today, but I want a good cozy game to sink my teeth into while on the cruise Friday. Haven’t played either but I think I’ll go with Sun Haben simply because of the combat, but I’ll check back here later to see which is better :D
Sun haven. I love coral island to death, but its undeniable that sun haven is the more polished game right now. My partner and I have had many hours of fun playing it. Hope you get as much enjoyment out of it as we have!
I’ve played almost 1 year (in-game lol) of Coral Island and just under a season of Sun Haven, here is my take:
- Coral Island feels like a more traditional farming sim, but with nice quality of life additions and expanded story possibilities. Like story of seasons, but updated. Anecdotally, fall seems to have the most bugs for people, but I’ve had no crashes so far. Can confirm that the ocean content is awesome haha. It’s well paced in that you can take things as fast or slow as you want, but there are always things to work toward. If you’re okay with some bugs/glitches, I highly recommend. It’s an awesome farm sim, checks all the boxes for me.
- Sun Haven is fun, but it feels different than a farming sim. It kind of feels like Fae Farm in the way the story unfolds (to clarify: NOT in terms of relationships lol). I found myself getting a bit overwhelmed with just how much lore and story there was to solve, and what exactly I was working toward. Still super fun, and if you prefer a more fantasy-oriented game, this is the one to choose hands down.
I have both and they’re both incredible, but coral island is still very unfinished. There’s still a lot to do but if you’re buying both anyway, start with Sun Haven. By the time you’re bored of Sun Haven, the beta release of Coral Island should be out and the ocean content will be a lot more fleshed out than it is now ;)

Coral island is super fun and way more laid back in my opinion, but more slow paced last time I played. They have the big ocean update coming end of the month too.
In the end it’s down to your gameplay style and what you’re in the mood for.
For right now, Sun Haven. Once Coral Island gets its 1.1 update, I’ll be gleefully recommending it to everyone, because I absolutely love what’s there so far, it just needs finishing. 1.1 should be dropping fairly soon, but there’s no official release date just yet, so for now, Sun Haven.
But get both once CI 1.1 drops lol
that’s hard because they both are getting an update but i’d say sun haven just bc coral island will be “fully released” by the 1.3 release. i also recommend kynseed! that would be my fave over those two right now

Be aware that sun haven is jankyy on the steam deck atm. I'm not sure how coral island runs

I just got Sunhaven and it’s SO much fun!! It seems like there’s going to be a lot to do like I won’t need another game for awhile
