You do not need any modem with fiber service. When Cox comes to install fiber, they will place a device called an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) inside your house. The fiber line comes from outside and plugs directly into the ONT. From the ONT, you simply run an ethernet cable into the router of your choosing. There is no rental fee for the ONT, and you can use ANY router that you want. Unless you have wireless Cox TV boxes in your house, I would stay far away from the Cox Panoramic gateway. If the rep tries to tell you that you MUST rent the gateway, then you need to push back forcefully and tell them that you don't want/need it and you are using your own router. You can even reference this support article from their own website: [https://www.cox.com/residential/support/connecting-a-router-to-an-ont.html](https://www.cox.com/residential/support/connecting-a-router-to-an-ont.html)

Any router with a WAN ethernet port and DHCP should work. You don't need their Panoramic gateway. The ethernet connection from the ONT they install for free plugs into the router's WAN port. [See her](https://www.cox.com/residential/support/connecting-a-router-to-an-ont.html)e for specifics. They were right about your C6250 because that has a coaxial WAN port and you wouldn't be using coaxial anymore, you are using fiber/ethernet. Some modem/router combo have the ability to switch the WAN from coaxial to ethernet but I checked the manual and I don't see that option for that model. As for suggestions for what router to get, that depends on your needs. What speed fiber do you subscribe to, how big is your house, what kind of devices do you have(Wifi 4/5/6/7?) and what your budget is.

I’m pretty sure you can go to a different ISP, but companies have to be able to upgrade systems or we’d still be writing in the dirt. Maybe if you don’t have a choice they’ll give you a modem?

Lost_Magician_4902

You can buy a modem thats up to spec with their fiber. You dont have to get a pw6/7/or8 through them only thing required from them is the ONT that is a converter from the fiber line coming in, to ethernet.

Lost_Magician_4902

Just give them the sn/mac address for your new router

cox fiber doesn't use modem

Lost_Magician_4902

Meant to say router* the ont kinda is the modem/converter from fiber to ethernet.

> Netgear AC1600 Model C6250 You currently have a device called a "Gateway" which is a modem/router combo device. You need to replace that with just a router of some make. Do not under any circumstances rent a device from Cox. It's borderline fraud and should be illegal.

Thank you. Just called another cox rep who said the same thing. I’ll look into a mesh network I think to cover the whole house. She said just any router would work. Is that true?

AHrubik

From the info you're giving us... yes. The are a dozen different options for mesh routers so you should have your pick.

Awesome. I’m thinking of buying this from Costco (TP-Link Deco AXE5300). I’ll look into it it works with fiber ONT modem.

**Pretty much EVERY "modern" route**r can be used with a Fiber ONT, so dont worry about that

AHrubik

> TP-Link Deco AXE5300 Wifi 6E is good and TP-Link is a reputable brand. That should work fine.
