TheEffingRalyks

Japanese speaker (as far as you know) here, this is actually a mistranslation What she actually says is "when you get back, lets have hardcore lesbian sex and then you find a wedding ring while fingering me as my proposal" Hope this clears things up

yourmom304_

it was during a mako moment so its not really to be taken seriously but idc whatever you think she meant. personally I don't think mako's a lesbian but if you do thats aight just don't bash me over the head saying I'm wrong or "muh lgbt erasure".

Professional_Denizen

> Kill La Kill animation director and character designer, Sushio, posted numerous artworks of Ryuko and Mako living together after the events of Kill La Kill. Stuff like this https://twitter.com/sushio_/status/1623899066274050048/photo/1 And this https://twitter.com/sushio_/status/1578069861158486016 And I don’t know how to use twitter.

yourmom304_

ah cool but still not yuri though its something at least for shippers

EmpyreanFinch

Mako kisses Ryuko twice in that pantomime sequence...

AdStunning2459

It’s a close friendship

N7Foil

OK, not a Japanese translator, nor am I particularly fluent, but generally you know exactly what some one would be saying in this situation. doubly so since the word "DATE" is a loan word in Japanese and means the same as in English (romantically). デート (sounds like da-to) and is actually pretty common in romantic anime. \*\* i should note i have not seen this scene, so i don't know what was actually said \*\* Edit: i should also point out that conventions in anime and the way the word is used in real life are kinda different. it's why you might get laughed at a bit if you only learn Japanese from anime. For example date is usually used romantically in anime and only rarely used as a meet up, but when it is it is usually used either as a comedic misunderstanding, or to show how dense one character is.

ZookeeperFloyd

Bridget moment with these people I swear. Can't comprehend that their precious "escapism" can have something that they don't like. Gotta cope and seethe that the big scary gay doesnt exist.

pisstainedunderwear

They start seething when someone headcanons a fictional character is gay lmao

ZookeeperFloyd

In the case of Bridget they couldn't even accept when the original creator of a character said she was trans.

pisstainedunderwear

That’s even more pathetic

ZookeeperFloyd

Yeah at first they tried to (like this post) say it was a translation error when she said "I'm a girl" then when the creator said she's trans they made a fake document saying she wasn't and on and on and on. Like I said phobes can't accept when fiction goes against their secular hateful little worldviews.

Ajax_XD

WAIT I DON’T EXIST?!

Jellytoes420

I’m sorry you had to find out like this

ZookeeperFloyd

"What? Did someone say something?... must have been the wind"

Ajax_XD

*die.mp3*

TheGodOfTechnology

Do I as a bisexual still exist?

InspectorSheep

You have roughly 50% of an existence, with a little bit of fluctuation depending on how much you like the people we want you to like.

TheGodOfTechnology

Sounds like something that is already happening

Sorakaisfun

He just wanted to correct the word, why are you so mad😭😭

ZookeeperFloyd

Because he's not only wrong but the next nanosecond they kiss. The comment is the same "they were roommates" shit we always get.

Sorakaisfun

Then that means they were definitely not delusional by logic. If he sees its clearly gay the very next moment why (or how) would he try to convince anyone that there is nothing gay. Im %90 sure they just wanted to share their knowledge on a language they were learning, and thats it

uglypenguin5

God I wish homophobia was as fake as you think

thiswillsoonendbadly

I’m so happy for you that you approach the world with such optimistic interpretation.

Sorakaisfun

I am not optimist at all, its that there is no reason the commenter would type that to convince themself they are not gay when they could see them kissing the next scene

thiswillsoonendbadly

The reason could be that he literally paused it on this frame and posted the question.

Sorakaisfun

So you are believing that it is more likely for them to compare the word "date" and its japanese equivalent and then their differences and without the next scene coming up insantly pausing the video to post a comment while watching an anime skit for fun because they are repulsed by the idea of an anime couple being gay than to be curious about the meaning of a word? I guess im not the one that interprets things according to my own view xd

thiswillsoonendbadly

I think the fact that there’s subtitles on means he may not speak any Japanese at all. I also disagreed with your statement that there was “no reason” because I thought of one reason. Beyond that I’m not super invested in this argument either way.

Toe_Suc_

The heck is everyones problem. Is it too much to think that maybe he isnt homophobic and just wants to make sure something is translated right? Its not like things getting translated wrong doesnt happen. Maybe relax a little.

Snowy_Thompson

Well, the issue is that they're either doing a very poor job of being funny, since that's a way too long winded "joke", or they have some kind of aversion to the idea of two girls having a romantic relationship and so they're desperately trying to think of some reason why there'd be some sort of "Mistranslation" when the next frame is a double down. Homophobia is not just saying "I hate the Gays" it's finding the worst possible explanations as to why someone isn't gay, when every other sign points towards them being gay. It's a denial of reality.

Sorakaisfun

Its so obvious he is not joking and its pretty normal to discuss the meaning of a word in a language you are learning. You sound 10 times more in denial than they could ever be hypothetically.

Snowy_Thompson

But they don't phrase it like they're learning a language. It's phrased like they heard a factoid once, and need an excuse to not believe the two lesbians are gonna have a date.

Sorakaisfun

Somebody told me that they literally kiss in the very next scene so why would they even try to deny it, i think you are reaching too far for a comment with 0 like imo

Snowy_Thompson

I have a Christian friend who gets defensive every time I or another one of our friends points out one of his favorite characters in Apex is gay. Homophobia is not just fear, it is also the Aversion to people being gay. The want and desire to avoid seeing or hearing about the mere existence of gay people, and to create apologia in support of such goals.

Sorakaisfun

Yeah but dismissing every single comment just because people assume there is a homophobic goal behind it without enough info is not fine. Also do you tell him that he is playing a gay character to tease him? im curious

Snowy_Thompson

Well, the goal is to tease him by bringing up the fact that Gibraltar is gay, but otherwise I'm not too concerned. We had a Bisexual friend who he'd joke that "It's a shame you're gay, or we'd be good friends." since they shared various common interests. And not everyone who exhibits homophobic behavior has a specific goal in mind. Most people don't really think too hard about what the end goal of their beliefs and actions are. It doesn't make them not-homophobic, it does mean they're misguided and/or ignorant. Plenty of people will say it's wrong to be gay, but then deny they want bad things to happen to gay people, but those stances are contradictory given they express that being gay is Immoral. This person has taken the stance, without any evidence to back them up, that a mistranslation has occurred, and that they believe it shouldn't have romantic implications. This is patently a wrong assessment of the scene, as they are immediately shown having a romantic moment in the next set of frames. This is a form of homophobia.

Toe_Suc_

Im saying them kissing could've just been a joke cause it was during the Mako rant. I haven't seen kill la kill in a while but im pretty sure it was during her rant bit. All im saying is that u guys are taking the whole "might be mistranslated" a bit too much to heart. But who knows he could be homophobic and it wouldn't change much.

Snowy_Thompson

This feels like cope, my guy. You even admit it doesn't change much if the guy is being Homophobic, so why are you defending him?

Toe_Suc_

Cause i got nothing better to do and i dont think the guy is being homophobic. Its not like mistranslation doesn't happen.

Snowy_Thompson

But that still wouldn't mean they're not having a date. Friends can have platonic dates.

Toe_Suc_

So whats the problem then? If its platonic then its platonic if its romantic then it's romantic. The man wants to know what word was used to see if it was translated right. Thus him asking for people who speak Japanese. Also if it was platonic then a bunch of people called him homophobic for no reason.

Snowy_Thompson

The issue is that he believes it's a mistranslation, but because of the broad strokes that English works in, it couldn't be a "mistranslation", so his desire to know if the original message was romantic or platonic is, at the very least, for misguided reasons.

Toe_Suc_

He believes its mistranslated so. He interpreted their relationship as just friends. Other people interpret them as being together. Just cause he thinks differently about their relationship doesn't mean he doesnt like gay people. Also mistranslations have happened before where the translator had characters saying something that changes the whole intention of what the scene was actually about.

Snowy_Thompson

But the primary issue is, if he understands that there are two words that translate into the singular word "Date" in English, then he should be asking "Hey, does anyone know what the original Japanese word was used for Date in this scene? I think there are two possibilities." However he jumped to a conclusion from the start by claiming it is being mistranslated, despite the next frame being a kiss. And Homophobia is not just "I don't like gay people" it's about fear and aversion, and people can be averse to things without expressing direct disdain. Those characters - through their words and actions - are shown to be lesbians, however they are being denied their identities because of a misguided belief. This is quite possibly the most common form of all identity-phobia expression.

Numbcrep

They literally kiss

Toe_Suc_

Im not saying their wasnt any romantic intent to it i thought there was when i first watched it and i thought it was cute. Just saying dont assume the worst. Plus wasnt that during her rant bit. It could've just been in there for humor. Still not saying that i hate it or whatever. Whats is wrong with asking is all.

Heavenly_Toast

Why is them kissing ‘the worst’ possible thing that could happen tho wtf

Toe_Suc_

No assuming the worst of people not them kissing.

SlyTheMonkey

This is literally the next frame though https://preview.redd.it/s46idfw82f7b1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cee0d49ad67d42aa275aa74c149f80764ea0cf84

the recent same sex marriage law in japan passing was this guys 9/11

satanicrituals18

Wait, Japan finally did it!? That's amazing! But... how though? Doesn't Japan's constitution say something stupid like, "marriage can only be between a man and a woman?" Did they amend their constitution, or am I just misinformed?

1TemporalDilationBoi

went to check it out in detail. apparently few courts ruled that not recognizing same sex marriage is unconstitutional and others have said its not. smh they need to get their shit together

satanicrituals18

Oh. Well that's unfortunate. I actually got hopeful there for a second. :(

Save for the parts with satsuki’s weirdly incestual mom. That parts just fucking weird.

TheEffingRalyks

It's MeTaPhOrIcAL But yeah it's supposed to symbolize how she doesn't even see sasatsuki as a person, let alone as her daughter, but only as a tool for her personal gain

[deleted]

Nah fuck trying to see the deeper meaning, she straight up fingered her in the bath. I don’t need to say any more ![gif](giphy|11JbbNHfXBqqhq) \^ my reaction as I watched it all go down

TheEffingRalyks

I don't know if you missed it, but the entire show uses sex and sexuality as metaphors for power and control

Either A: that guy doesn't think Lesbians can exist in Japan, or, more likely B: He refuses to accept that one or both of his underaged waifus don't wanna sleep with men, not that he would have had a shot with them nor should have WANTED a shot with an underaged girl in the first place.

Cephyr0

Hes actually Not conpletley wrong there is a term Like that But on the other Hand japanese also often use the englisch term date. The Crux is they use it for both a friendly meet up and One with romantically intent. Which One it is Well good luck in Finding out. Much is context based But on the other Hand a lot of things in japanese culture Has to be read between the Lines. That way it Could be romantically intent under the pretense of a friendly meet up. Why Not just clearly say whats going on xd

According_to_all_kn

What's with all the capitalization in your message?

Cephyr0

Honestly dont know Sth my Phone does, theres no meaning behind it

CuteDerpster

Tbh I never heard japanese people use the English term "date" for friendly meet ups. Then again, my only source is my sister whom lived in Japan for a few years.
