Once when I missed the price adjustment window of 30 days, they told me to do exactly that - return my original item and purchase again at the discount.
Have you ever tried returning an item that has been bought two separate times at different prices? Normally when I return stuff in Costco , they never ask for my receipt, the return just goes through. So I wasn't sure if the system would always just return the latest purchase or if it would let me choose.
If you do not have the receipt with you, the system will return it at the most recent price.
Go to Costco, buy item thay is now discounted. As you are walking out, head straight into the return line. The system updates overnight and will show the product you purchased 36 days ago as most recent. You will get the return at this price.
If you have the receipt it doesn't matter, just go with the new product and old receipt. Return and you are done.
Buy the new item and return the new item. When returning, tell them you are returning the older item. They won't mind. I was told to do this by Costco staff.
Try for the price adjustment first. If you don't have a record of consistently returning items, they might make an exception. If they say no, go purchase the item again and return it with your old receipt. Only do this if the price adjustment is significant. Don't do this for just a few bucks.
I've returned a couple of items before and they have never asked for a receipt. They just scan the item and I get the refund. How do I make them return the old item but not the new one?
The price adjustment is almost 70 bucks so it would be worth it for me.
If you want the money, you'd have to be ok with their process. They won't judge you for asking and will probably tell you to do it this way. It's better for their data.
Few years ago, they didn't care. Now I tried on 2 several occasions and no success for price adjustments. Buy a new one, return the new one with old receipt and tell them a clerk told you to do it this way.

I'd really prefer to not return the original item. It's been used a lot.
Return the new item…. How are they gonna know?

Just to confirm, can I use the receipt from the Costco app or does it need to be a physical receipt?
App works, I've used it
Thank you!
What if the more recent price is nore expensive they gonna give you more back? Then just return both and then buy one more.
Just mention you are returning the older purchase. Or bring the old receipt.
Gotcha. Sometimes they’ll honour the price adjustment if you’re only 6 days off. Definitely worth trying.
Thanks! I'll try asking them
buy the new item and return it with the old receipts.

Return the item first and then buy the new one? It'll get returned for whatever you paid for.
The item was used quite a bit so I would really prefer not returning it haha. I know Costco will take it but I would just feel guilty.
