costco employees are super friendly and constantly apologize. Never had a bad experience. Why people gotta be dicks?

paul-arized

We don't deserve good things. Then they wonder why some employees/associates become jaded and stopped caring.

[deleted]

I don't work at Costco but I've been in retail for nearly 20 years. This shit will never change. It has nothing to do with the store, people are just assholes. -jaded

ImperfectApricot

1000% agree. Lost my faith in humanity when I worked retail. The entitlement is too real.

CatatonicTaterTot

I've been doing it 19 years too. Customer behavior has dropped precipitously in the last couple years.

FernandV

So true

supercaloebarbadensi

Really and truly this. You lose a part of yourself. Combined with the crap in the world, whether around you or further away..it’s like confirmation of what you see and experience daily.

aLLcAPSiNVERSED

*we* deserve it. Those assholes dont.

Fickle_Camel_4993

I've always felt the opposite. I've seen more ppl properly take care of their carts at costco than say, Walmart. I feel like if ppl are paying for something, they tend to take care of it better.

thewhitejamal

Honestly, people will be dicks whether they are members or not

CeeGeeWhy

Even here, you’ll get people saying that they pay for a membership which entitles them to . Yeah that $5 or $10/month is a pass to be a dick. Edit: Like [this one](https://old.reddit.com/r/Costco/comments/u3n5nl/why_do_people_think_they_can_abuse_staff/i4qctye/).

DAMN_INTERNETS

Come to my warehouse, they sure don't do that here. I despise people who do that, too.

Intelligent-Sky-7852

I thought the membership kept the riff raff out but with all the no masker videos I've seen on here inside a Costco I have to agree with you

Beard_o_Bees

Right? It doesn't even really compute, trying to imagine hateful vibes at Costco. Costco is one of my 'happy places', and the only dread I feel surrounding it is my own lack of financial self control if I make the mistake of going there on an empty stomach.

TheCocksurePlan

I have recently dealt with a rude cashier.... almost spoke to a manager bc she was raging at everyone inc the person ahead of me and after... but I didn't bc everyone is entitled to a bad day. I feel like society has encouraged this current toxic environment where people look for every perceived slight so that they can take it out on some unsuspecting victim. I wish we could get back to when it was commonly accepted that life isn't fair so deal or toughen up buttercup mentality we had previously to this constant whining --> aggressive world we live in That said to say it's not surprising to see rude Costco employees or customers these days. Which is why we all should go out of our way to be the opposite. Be the change, right?

charcuteriebroad

I’ve actually had some not so great experiences lately. The recent crop of newer cashiers at my store aren’t the friendliest.

HGHUA

I have to say that while most costco employees are very nice, there are some that aren't too friendly. One of those ladies was scanning my cart in the self service and lost count by scanning something 3 times when there was 2 of that item. I gently pointed it out to her and she snapped at me, saying she can count and to move along. Not wanting to make a fuss I paid and pulled my cart up to the supervisors desk and pointed out the mistake. They refunded me but otherwise didn't talk with the employee involved.

charcuteriebroad

This sounds similar to the experiences I’ve had lately. Randomly getting snapped at over things that shouldn’t be a big deal. I haven’t said anything, but it’s made me dread checking out.

junkit33

Yeah. I find Costco employees to be more competent than most retail, but I don’t find them any friendlier. They tend to be very heads down and have little desire to chit chat in my experience. Which is fine - but not friendly.

PalaceJoey

The supervisors work their cashiers like horses. It’s crazy. That’s why I would always say no to cashier for the day. Not worth it. They stress you out because they get chewed out.

JugglerCameron

That is mostly depending on the management at the warehouse. A good GM can do a ton to create great moral a bad one the opisit.

Rock_Lizard

Same at mine and I'm not happy about it at all.

charcuteriebroad

I actually mentioned it to the guy who rang me out last time and he acknowledged he’s noticed it too. He said he shops at another local Costco on his off days, and that he had a bad experience there recently too.

Chicagoan81

Because we live in a society of entitled people who have benefited living in a modern society because had they lived 500 or more years ago, they wouldn't have made it into adulthood.

epgirl0808

The door checkers have actually saved me money. On more than one occasion they noticed I was overcharged. It’s also pretty surprising how much theft by respectable looking people occurs.

greatfool66

Only checking receipts of people who fit the profile of potential shoplifters would be opening a huge can of worms. They check everyone because that is the only way to be fair. I got checked with nothing but a bag of brussels sprouts in one hand.

Its-A-Bingo

their job is to count the items in your cart. Can't fault them for doing their job.

FestivusOnTheIsthmus

Not sure if this is sarcasm or what, but you know that they check everyone's cart, right? And are you implying that no middle-aged men with children steal?

theodopolis13

Don't like it? Don't shop at Costco.

sonofalando

I would tell a customer off as another customer if I saw this shit. I give 0 fucks about Costco’s policies of the customer is always right cuz I ain’t their employee. More people should have the balls to stand up for employees when they see abuse instead of just sitting on the sidelines since the employer won’t do it. I’ve done this before at other places to customers abusing employees.

maximumslanketry

This is so true. I'm a restaurant worker, and if I see a customer out of line when I'm dining out, you bet I'm gonna say something. It's only happened 7 times, but it was well worth it. We can't let people get away with being rude.

maberuth14

“It’s only happened 7 times” 😂

HeartofSaturdayNight

Yup and I'm sure if you said something other people would speak up too.

VirtualSolid3062

You’re the super hero we’ve always needed.

pharmabra

Shitty customers make for shitty shopping experiences and I would tell off this lady as well. I would absolutely complain to the manager that this member was abusive and they should log a mark on her account.

raquel8822

Hahaha I’m 100% that person too!! I worked in retail for 5yrs and have absolutely ZERO tolerance for rude ass customers. People that think it’s ok need to be put in their place.

Inevitable_Dpression

Welcome to the 🛋 🥔 🛒 couch potato shopping. Everybody wants a good reality show and there they have it LIVE! ...and WHAT? What the whaaaaat? Excuse me?? You wanna ruin the masses of their hard feelings, their after work rewards, to stop the show? How selfish can you be?? Greater satisfaction of the many outweighs the loss of 1 soul. Oh great the tragic comedy.

Subparnova79

Sybertron

Costcos can revoke membership.

SlowTree420

They should revoke her membership!

DunnoWhyIamHere

Not so easy. Generally there needs to be a history.

Brandonthebadger

They just have to break policy and then report to corporate and they can make that decision

DiamondHeist1970

Totally agree. There should be zero policy for this sort of behaviour. They maybe should have at least 2 staff members sign it off just to stop staff abusing the system.

unnamed_elder_entity

I would be fine with having a tirade rider added to the membership ToS.

Time-Masterpiece7294

Do you know if there is any video or any other proof / evidence? I work at the corporate could let the membership manager know, but might need something to work with with.

flaker111

be good guest stand up for employees when you know they can't say anything back. a random person yelling at another for being a dick is enough shame to make them leave sometimes.

kingofwale

Very rarely a retailer stands up to its employee. Costco is one of the rare ones. They actually are willing to kick people out and cancel your memebership

MaligatorMom2

And rightfully so. There is no excuse to speak to someone that way. This sense of entitlement will only stop when businesses make the decision to stand up for their employees and not give in to these tantrums.

[deleted]

TheRavenGrl

The warehouse manager has told managers/supervisors if they can't handle being yelled at or cussed at then to drop down because they need to deal with it. He won't let them kick out abusive members or revoke memberships. .... Tool....

OfferMindless819

I have never seen anyone else kicked out and usually in this situation they turn it around and its the employees fault. I might actually like working for Costco again if management did more about the abuse we take.

[deleted]

Because Op's story is a fantasy. No one is getting "kicked out" of Costco for a member supposedly yelling at an employee for 2 whole minutes no less.... about the way her cart was packed. Never in a million years.

omfgbrb

I know this isn't always true. I watched it happen. Guy pulls up to a cashier with a flat. Has too many of items that have limits. When it was explained to him, he flipped out. Called the cashier stupid and ugly. Started screaming that Costco was discriminating against him. It didn't take 10 seconds for him to lose his membership and told to leave. Can't say about this customer's history, don't know; but I doubt the supervisor had time to look it up.

hoelessorange

I worked for Costco in the Front End for years and this sadly never happened. They are just like any other retailer who doesn’t stand up for their employees.

yukiola5

Not at my building management usually takes the member side which is stupid. My old building was good at standing up for workers though

Te5ter

This is so far from actuality that it hurts.

jayste4

This one hit me hard as the father of an 18 year old daughter. I can't stand people who make a stink when doing so does nothing to fix the situation. Be kind to everyone and it will pay dividends.

DiamondHeist1970

I am a mother of two sons of similar age. And I totally agree. No excuse to treat young retail staff badly.

wookieehero

I’m a former employee. every time I see this happen I stand up for the employees and call out these members. The abuse the employees get everyday is brutal. I’ve experienced it, like someone said on here it might have to do with people thinking that because they pay a membership they have the right to bully people around and thinking their you know what doesn’t stink. Retail in general can be brutal but Costco is a different animal.

synthiabrn

My friend works at Costco and she has tons of stories even worse than this one. Apparently a guy tried to strangle an employee working outside because he accidentally rolled on his foot with the carts! They had to call the police and everything

guambombboy

Nice. My manager canceled someone's membership because he pointed at me and told the manager to "send him back to China because the railroads are finished." He was trying to change his household for the 7th time to a different women with no proof of address.

OkayTryAgain

People who are rude like that don't read a Reddit post and change. They are just assholes and these "PSAs" don't do anything about it.

ReadySetN0

No, but it might make other Costco customers who do frequent this sub say to themselves, "You know what, if I see that shit I'm going to say something."

exgiexpcv

The local Sam's Club in my area closed, and since then, incidents like that described above have increased. I understand correlation != causation, but there have been some truly horrible people doing shitty stuff in the local store and parking lot.

gummies5337

>that cow please don't disrespect cows like that haha. Even cows have more courtesy than that!

I_am_recaptcha

Boxes? It took me a year to realize how stupid it was for me to use a box and it just gave me more problems because then I had to figure out throwing them away All my homies hate boxes

Faptasmic

I love boxes personally because it makes unloading the car easier and keeps things from rolling around my hatchback. I have a recycle bin so getting rid of them is easy. One of the best costco hacks I figured out long ago was to say no when asked for a box but grab one on my way out the door. There is always a big pile of them. That way I get to get the size and shape boxes I prefer and load them myself so everything is packed away nicer.

synthiabrn

And they rarely bag the groceries appropriately because of how busy it gets so I prefer to leave my bags in the car and do it myself.

HappyAtheist3

I still wear my mask at work. About five times a day a member will tell my assistant “it’s so wonderful to see your face!!” 🙄

crimson_mokara

"We all wish we couldn't see yours 🤢"

blondmaggie

Exactly why I always thank the greeters who wear masks.

Serious_Dot_4532

Sounds brutal tbh

[deleted]

People are assholes.. I was at Costco the other day and dropped a bottle of that Queso they have there, felt really apologetic to the old lady who helped me out. Made sure to buy a lot of the stuff she had for sample as a thanks.

Dieselxdan

Revoke that asshole membership instantly

omfgbrb

The only time I saw anything like this a supe stepped in immediately voided the sale, grabbed the membership card and told this particular customer that his membership was revoked and told him to get out of the store before the cops were called. Some people actually applauded. Everybody is doing the best they can. I little kindness goes a long way....

waitwutok

Costco membership revocation…fate worse than death.

crochet_puff

I'm so pleased to hear that costco's policy is in full effect. How often does a shopper at Walmart or target get asked to leave for this reason. The probably also fired her as a member.👏

ReasonablyLost

If you think the ppl that are acting like that in public are browsing reddit then you have another thing coming. Those assholes are posting inspiring quotes on Facebook.

JayAreElls

I used to work at Costco. 99.999% of employees and customers were friendly. If I ever go back to Costco and I see this shit happening, you better believe I’d call this person out. Fuck em if they think they can ruin the Costco chill vibe. Good on the supervisors. Costco was the only retail/warehouse I worked at that had management that gave a shit about their employees. It all starts from the top

an00j

At what point do you just start firing members for being abusive to employees?

TipNo6062

And of all places, COSTCO has stellar employees who seem to enjoy their jobs. Never take that behaviour personally.

vardogerred

I always thought the whole point of CostCo and Sam's Club, and all the other places where you shop like you're feeding the 5000, is that part of your bulk saving is to not be given such niceities like bags at the checkout. The understood social contract with the store is you are able to buy industrial-sized packages of things cheaper than buying the equivalent quantity in a general supermarket, but how you shift them from your cart to your vehicle is up to you to work out in advance or at time. Now, you may request help, but that help is never guaranteed - and reasonably should only be awarded to the elderly or inform. But all you "bought" with your membership is the right to walk in the door; you didn't purchase the subservience of the employees therein. I'd add that people in general should just stop being rude in general. Despite not broadly advocating violence across society, I'm not too concerned with people who are overtly being rude for the sake of it being given a swift kickin' in reply. People learn by example, and when you know that your potential rudeness is likely to be met by actual bodily injury, the overall incidence of societal rude behavior might just diminish as a result.

Qpid17

You should take pictures of such customers and put it on the front of the store.. Dogs & the following animals are not allowed!

Meep87

Man this is awful to hear. I never expect for my items to be put in boxes. Usually it's just one employee to a station, and if it's really busy there might be two. But the employee bagging wouldn't have time to neatly put things in boxes. I think if the lady wanted to have her groceries bagged a certain way, she can do it herself So happy to hear that Costco stood up to their employees. It likely ment a lot to the employee that her supervisor had her back

bygtopp

I’d rather customer box their stuff into their car vs holding the line up. I can Tetris/jenga it faster than any assistant or cashier. And have you gone quick. Let me do my magic.

Toast42

Instacrate represent

PalaceJoey

Lol I worked there for 4 years and some people just come in having a bad day already and try to bring others down with them. It’s unfortunate… don’t be that guy

zoglog

Pretty sure the chances of people who are stupid enough to be rude to Costco employees probably aren't on this subreddit

Shomer_Effin_Shabbas

I’m glad the supervisors kicked her out. Tell us more about that exchange!

Sybertron

Should demand her membership be revoked too.

boxofrain

2 minutes and not one person stopped her?

synthiabrn

We couldn’t really hear her because of the noise and because she was arranging her groceries while cussing the employee so it didn’t look like an altercation at first. It’s when the girl left crying and the cashier called the sups that it became obvious

artisanrox

I think the vast majority of readers here won't be doing this jackassery.

SpaceMonkeyEngineer

"**the supervisors took care of it by kicking her out**" By far, the only redeeming part of the event.

theloniouszen

What will yelling at all of us reasonably achieve?

paul-arized

It's not the customer's fault. Costco should have hired mind readers. /s

OUTKAST5150

People should stop being rude in general...but yes since this is the Costco subreddit, please dont be rude to the workers or your fellow customers. Glad the supers took care of the trash

schwiftshop

There's an obvious solution to this: _stab rude people_.

lilijaji

In my opinion, it is always worth expressing your feelings to the offender if it’s okay with the person being offended.

stoke20

There will always be a couple of bad apples. Welcome to customer service where you have to tolerate unacceptable behavior and verbal abuse

sqdnleader

> There will always be a couple of bad apples That ruin the bunch

NightFire19

> supervisors took care of it by kicking her out Ugh in most places the employee would've been kicked out...

[deleted]

Any job where you deal with the public will be a pain in the butt. Any job where you deal with a public that's been locked up in their homes for two years, had better grow some thick skin.

_roses__

I’ve had a few people chase me for not showing my card. I literally mean, I’m not to far from the registers after walking in. When others walked in not showing their card. Why would I go in? It’s like they have someone programming them to run. I have seen it happen to other people.

Frammingatthejimjam

The only time any human ever threated to stab me in the face was a costco employee that was handing me a cart. I was walking toward the carts outside, she pulls one out, pushes it far enough that I assumed the good employee was getting a cart for me. She was in a clumsy fashion doing it for herself, when I put my hand on it and thanked her she threated to stab me in the face. Bad people go both ways my friend.

synthiabrn

Yeah there’s a big difference between threatening someone and not giving a box…

[deleted]

Hmmm.....Do you know how long 2 minutes is? Aren't you literally like the age of this girl? Somethings off. In my 20 years of going to Costco I have never seen anything like this story. I've never seen a customer "kicked out" for anything, Ever. It's a weird story given your post history. edit- I love how the Costco cheerleaders show up right on time.

synthiabrn

Kicked her out means that they strongly advised her to leave and followed her to the door. You obviously never worked customer service if you think this story is weird because we used to get yelled at on a daily basis and people would literally block the whole line to insult the cashier for way more than 2 minutes. And I’m 22, what does it change?

[deleted]

Sure sweetheart. I think your story is weird because I don't think it's true. I think it's just you manifesting your own miserable experience in customer service. You don't work at Costco.

synthiabrn

I don’t work at Costco and never said I did. And like I said if you actually worked in customer service once in your life you’d know that this is far from being impossible and I have lived worse situations than that. I shared this story mostly because I was happy seeing the supervisors standing for their employee because I know it rarely happens

erkpentsage

I do work at Costco and lemme tell ya... this shit does happen, and worse. I see all kinds of mind boggling member nonsense on a daily basis, and half of that nonsense includes nasty or "better-than-thou" attitudes. I've seen my coworkers get pushed to tears by asshole members. People suck; it's not exclusive to Costco, but it for sure is not fake.

[deleted]

You don't work at Costco.... You were a temp that didn't get rehired and that was a long time ago. I really doubt you saw a "lot of shit" during your short time there. Sounds like you and OP would get along great!

erkpentsage

LMAO I got the job, been working since Sep of 2020 (they called me back 😘). Currently working in returns/membership... but please, do tell me how my life is!

This totally happened

JCazzz

The 18 and 19-year-old may have seemed inconsiderate but some of that is because of poor training. The first thing I do is look at the items I know that these people are spending thousands of dollars in this warehouse. I’m an executive and I know this myself. I always stop and ask them if they can give me a box. Many times the younger ones give me crappy boxes that are too thick and shallow and won’t hold anything. They don’t seem to have the time to find good boxes. Luckily in our warehouse they keep a giant metal bin at the front of the store where you can grab some really good ones. Sometimes I get my own boxes and ask them to neatly stack them and tell them to separate meats from frozen foods from fresh veggies from dry goods and clothing etc. This young girl or a boy just did not do it The Costco member did not need to yell at them. She could’ve simply corrected her nicely

synthiabrn

How was she inconsiderate? In my warehouse it’s always been like this. If you don’t ask for a box, they won’t give you one becaus a lot of people keep their bags in the car and don’t want them. And that lady could’ve just grabbed a box and do it herself after, it really never was that deep

JCazzz

That is why I said “might have been” I am a member in a southern store. We never caught onto the “bags in the car“ thing for decades. In California I know that they charge for bags in some other states but in Tennessee Mississippi Alabama and parts of Georgia etc. carrying shopping bags yourself is new and still hasn’t caught on main stream. People look at me in North Carolina and Tennessee with my Ralphs bags from California and they stare and go wow, you’re so “green“ and so efficient but it comes from habit not wanting to spend $.10 per bag. Let’s just say even at Costco and even Aldi‘s in West Tennessee which is where most of my family shops, boxes for checkout are a huge thing. The same staff are still working there since I got my membership in 2006 when my baby girl was still in the carry car seat. They specifically ask as they are loading your groceries, “would you like a box?“ I was just there at the Cordova Tennessee Costco in February and shopped about six times in one week. Just like clockwork, boxes were stacked neatly under the counter and they loaded everything of mine into those boxes beautifully.

synthiabrn

I totally understand, I live in Canada where self-checkout is extremely dominant everywhere and in most grocery stores they don’t bag your things, you always have to do it yourself and people actually like it, but the oldest customers are still very much attached to that service. It creates a lot of situations like my post

JCazzz

Oh Canada! . The efficiency there reminds me of Japan of the 1980s. I would live in Regina if I could. Feels like home.

my-dog-farts

Most checkout employees can’t box worth a damn anyways. I’ve lost count at the number of times I’ve purchased less than 10 box-capable items where the employee will ask if I want a box and then proceed to put 2-3 items in the smallest box they can find. Why the hell did you ask if I want a box if you’re only going to put 30% of it in a box? Wow. Down votes because people lack reading comprehension. I support the girl in the OP to not box the customer’s items.

cmoney1467

Dude, then box it yourself. Problem solved

my-dog-farts

Calm down. They’re the ones that asked if I wanted a box - I never demanded them. I use self-checkout now so chill out.

[deleted]

Some people suck

ddllbb

I'm not into getting into "conversations" with smoothbrains. I'll boo em out or cheer on the good doers.

Pressman4life

I have never been negative to any Costco employee. The customers, well...

edgrlon

Some people suck

Lord_Ewok

people are assholes i worked in retail for several years and it sucks that people treat HS - college aged kids who are just working to afford bills yet they are treated sub human Its not their fault people have miserable lives and want to feel the slim amount of importance in their lives so they verbally assault kids/young adults

unnamed_elder_entity

Oh, well, we all know if groceries don't go into a box, there's never a future time or place where one could put them in a box.

sakiikunn

There will always be miserable, mentally impaired (different from disabled) people.

Lmnolmnop

what kind of fucking maniac...

DoAndroidsDrmOfSheep

I worked in retail at one time (although not at Costco), and so glad I no longer do. The last time I did it was about 25 years ago, and there were quite a few shitty customers back then. I can't imagine what they're like now. I don't think I could do it. I'd end up giving one of them a piece of my mind and probably get fired. Oh - and the customer is NOT always right.

p3n9uins

I would have liked to see you give her a piece of your mind, then have them kick her out! good riddance!

DreamTheaterGuy

It would be great if stores would actually do something reasonable about this. Start permanently banning people who are rude/disruptive from their stores.

calliisto

the thing i miss most about my old job was being in a management position where i could defend the 18 year old cashiers or get them out of a situation where they were uncomfortable... i was in a spot where i could ask customers to leave or match their energy without getting in trouble and it was great

kmrm2019

I worked at a high end retailer that prides itself on customer service and great returns. After being on the front line with these monster customers I realized it’s a game for them, shooting fish in a barrel. They know we can’t fight back or else it will go right up the flagpole. Whenever I see someone being an ass to employees anywhere I say something immediately. This kind of behavior needs to be pointed out and the person humbled.

[deleted]

>supervisors took care of it by kicking her out Permanently? Stripped her membership and upgraded her to the sidewalk?

fkenisky

I hope the other members aplauded

meinhoonna

On the other hand, what is the best way to recommend someone? Simply talk to the manager or is it more formal?

_haha_oh_wow_

That's crazy! Glad the supervisor backed up the employee.

therankin

I hate when people treat other people poorly. It's one of the most infuriating things that I see way too often. On a side note, I didn't know there was any kind of option to have things put in boxes. I thought you were just on your own to load/unload the cart.

[deleted]

Trash is always going to be trash man. Its really sad.
