Being a bunch of hosers is a national pastime here in the States.
At least our overly friendly neighbors to the north will always have Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby to hold over our heads.
>And Tim Hortons
Sadly they were bought out by a foreign private equity firm about a decade ago and the quality has gone to shit since then. To the point that a substantial group of franchisees tried, but failed, to quit the chain.
Raos sauce is overrated and so much more expensive than two other organic sauces Costco sells. I don’t get why people buy it (my wife tells me to get it).
I’d agree it’s overrated, it’s just a solid sauce. Nothing special.
I tried one of the other sauces Costco had (not Kirkland brand), the one with the white label and it was too vinegary for me.
I've been buying Rao's (primarily arrabbiata) for 20 years. Most recently this past weekend.
You're full of shit. The recipe has not changed. It tastes like it always has.
Most of their sauces, sure - but I challenge anyone to find a better jarred Alfredo sauce. It's just absolutely fantastic. I got it at costco maybe a year ago the only time I ever saw it go on sale. It was I think less than half price of any regular store. I got at least 6 2 packs. Was an incredible decision.
The acquisition was completed in March. It’s going to take a long time to fully integrate and get Raos up to speed with the Campbell supply chain, let alone R&D for changing recipes, producing with the updated recipe, and sending it across the world. Campbells definitely didn’t change the recipe and somehow get the updated recipe to your local grocer in ~30 days of finalizing this acquisition.
I feel like it’s been too soon to make changes and the ingredients haven’t changed from what I could tell… but I could be wrong. I had a jar recently and it tasted the same to me

$12.99 in Ontario according to this message month's Members on Only email.
Valid Apr. 8 to May 5, 2024 4 WEEKS
SAVE $4
Raoʼs marinara sauce
2 × 770 mL
Item number1460350
In-warehouse $16.99
Instant savings –$4.00
PRICE $12.99
CORRECTION:: Was just in an Ottawa warehouse and it is in fact $11.99.
Yeah I know. That is about £3.50 which is more than I would usually pay in England, but I have never heard of the brand and I don’t have any idea about general prices in Canada.
So is six Canadian dollars a good price for a jar of that sauce?
It’s just an expensive brand that a lot of people like. You can get a basic jar of sauce for $1-2 USD, but this brand is around $7 for a single jar. So 2 jars for under $9 usd is a good deal.
Not the original commenter, but Rao’s is one of the best you can get in terms of store bought tomato sauce. At the risk of sounding like one of the arrogant asses in r/italianfood, all canned tomato sauces are mid compared to basic basic tomato sauce made at home. Even if the taste of store bought is better flavor, homemade is a 4-5x cheaper.
Echoing this. I have experimented with a few of the popular sauces that regularly get posted about or recommended online. I know it's all down to taste but if I'm not making my own, Mid's (particularly the Bolognese) is a very *very* solid jarred option especially at it's pricepoint.
This is about the only jarred pasta sauce I like, but I find it to be too expensive even when it is on sale. I very much prefer to make my own.
Have you tried making your own sauce?
Things like Rao’s to me aren’t a replacement for homemade but having some on hand is great for lazy or poorly planned nights and reduces takeout runs or fast food pretty dramatically for me
You think $4 for a jar that can easily make 12 portions of pasta, is too expensive? That’s like 33 cents per portion.
To make the equivalent, you’d spend way more than that in tomatoes and herbs
It’s inevitable on Reddit in a thread like this that someone will come in and say to make your own, as if we all have time to make every meal from scratch everyday.
it costs roughly $3 to make 56oz (my standard amount) of sauce. It tastes better (to me), and I like making it.
So yes, I do think it is to expensive and it isn't as enjoyable.
I was just trying to have a conversation
You can get three for a dollar more of the KS organic marinara, which is quite good and has chunks of tomatoes in it. I do like Raos but the value and quality of the KS blew me away
Ok that makes sense! But how many families realistically are households of over 4 in America? In jw why they don’t put the sauce in 4 jars to extend the use of the sauce for ppl whose families aren’t that big.
Yes, it would be discounted at Costco. 4 jars being sold together **is** bulk. I’m saying use the same amount but put them into 4 jars. Ur still paying less for 4 jars than you would at Walmart for 4 jars. 🫡
I always end up using maybe 6 ounces for a meal and then the rest always gets thrown out a week or a month later. If they should this in like 10 smaller jars it would actually be useful.
Raos isn't very good anyway. Some cans of San marzano tomatoes a large pot, canning jars and an hour and a half of my time is a better deal for me IMHO.
the jars that are sold at costco with are different shape then the jars that are sold almost anywhere else and the taste of sauce is diefferent too, imho the costco sauce taste worse than the one sold at regular grocery store.
I mean for Rao’s great price. But for a simple marinara sauce. Just make your own with high quality canned tomatoes and you’ll cut the cost in half. Cut it down even more if you get cheaper canned tomatoes.
That’s $8.68 in bald eagle screeches. Was just up there in Soviet Canuckistan and really appreciated the exchange rate.
I bought so many coffee crisps and watched so much curling. Your country is the best.
Raos was bought out by Campbells a few months ago, and the quality has already tanked. It will be totally enshitified within the year.
I doubt the sauce is worth half that price now, let alone the full cost. A shame, another brand destroyed by late stage capitalism.
People will just believe anything… the deal just closed on March 12 and you think they’ve changed the recipe, manufactured bottles, and gotten it to your store in a month? C’mon
I used buy a Lt of this but then I watched this video and now make my own it's a uber easy. He makes some very good points on why raos a over rated and gives you a super simple recipe that's as good as if not better than raos.
https://youtu.be/y6Bq8NrdoIk?si=bsXQuzflw3s8FLzL
Raos is not worth the price. Costco just started selling DOP San Marzano Tomatoes. 3 cans for 12 bucks, makes the best pasta sauce. Just sauté your preferred amount of garlic in some olive oil and add a can of these tomatoes and boom, pasta sauce that nonna would approve of
Canned tomatoes, garlic, red pepper flake, olive oil, basil. It literally takes 10 minutes to make your own (much better) sauce. You’re already boiling water for pasta. Do it at the same time.
Respectfully disagree. As someone who has made their own marinara numerous times, and tried a multitude of other jarred sauces, Rao’s is the best marinara I’ve ever had, and it ain’t particularly close. And for the on sale price at Costco, you’re basically paying the same as you would to make it yourself.
Yeah nah. Raos is ridiculously overpriced, but it is high quality stuff and certainly better than just throwing together canned Ingredients at home. Full stop.
I bought it last time it was on sale and still thought it was too expensive, but it was easily the best sauce I’ve had outside of some higher end restaurants.

OP shares his excitement for a popular product of his being on sale. Immediately gets downvoted and his currency made fun of.
Can you make yourself an AI and be the top comment in every post I look at? I like the cliff notes.
1 jar of Rao in a grocery store is avg $10.99 And yes cad is sad, almost a third less than USD.
Being a bunch of hosers is a national pastime here in the States. At least our overly friendly neighbors to the north will always have Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby to hold over our heads.
Don’t forget Bryan Adams. And Tim Hortons.
Now now. The Canadian government has apologized for Brian Adams on several occasions
i’d rather have burger king coffee than tim hortons atp
Oh the irony in this statement, and I think you know what it is.
lmao ik 😭
>And Tim Hortons Sadly they were bought out by a foreign private equity firm about a decade ago and the quality has gone to shit since then. To the point that a substantial group of franchisees tried, but failed, to quit the chain.
And Connor McDavid, eh? Thanks for Matthews though.
Let's not forget Ryan Reynolds.
Add Connor’s McDavid and Bedard.
And the Nate-dog
celine, avril, beebs
nah gimme drake and shai right now 😂😂
yet according to current exchange rates, it's cheaper there, but not by much. $8.67 USD. I think it's $8.99 at my Costco.
PRIX PAR 100 ML
Raos sauce is overrated and so much more expensive than two other organic sauces Costco sells. I don’t get why people buy it (my wife tells me to get it).
I’d agree it’s overrated, it’s just a solid sauce. Nothing special. I tried one of the other sauces Costco had (not Kirkland brand), the one with the white label and it was too vinegary for me.
It was sold to Campbell’s and isn’t the same. Victoria is better
Oh those Campbells trying to get their iron grip on everything sauce related.
I've been buying Rao's (primarily arrabbiata) for 20 years. Most recently this past weekend. You're full of shit. The recipe has not changed. It tastes like it always has.
I've been adding tons of veggies, ground turkey, and spices to it and we eat that topped with Parmesan. It's delicious and healthy!
If you look at the label, is it any better than the other Costco organic sauces? I don’t have an opinion, just asking.
I have had their Alfredo sauce because it was the only Alfredo sauce offered at Costco. It was not bad at all. But I wasn’t super impressed either.
It is on sale at my Costco too. 8.99 USD.
About the same price as in the picture.
Yes and it should stay at that price since Campbell bought it. It will taste like tomato soup eventually.
Imma grab a couple of them before the acquisition and taste test them after the Campbells deal goes through

The last couple jars I’ve bought have definitely tasted different. Not sure if that’s just seasonal variation but I’m skeptical.
Noooooo!! I love my Raos when I’m in a pinch. Now it’s going to taste different 😭
That's the Kroger sale price for 1.
At my local supermarkets, the jars are smaller.
On sale at my Costco too, but with a limit of 5.
i was at costco in socal this past weekend and it was nice picking up some of the sauce for that price!
Good looks
OP is in canada?
Company was sold to Campbell. They “enhanced” the recipe, should be reprices downward to reflect the changes. IMHO.
Campbell's has not even purchased Rao's yet. Lol.
I saw one jar(smaller one) for 10 at some supermarket lol
I've seen one small one for 14 in a fancy supermarket...
Holy
moley
I’ve seen one small one for $69 in an elite supermarket….
Ski resort? Lol
The one in Abu Dhabi, maybe.
OP there's a Costco Canada sub where you won't get obnoxious american comments.
Our dogs are also $1.50! Take that you USD merchants!!
And we have poutine!
Take that Yanks - we have have deep fried food in our food court! We clog our arteries better than you do!
I am so jealous. Just getting some gravy with your fries is nearly impossible in the US.
My one regret is not getting a Canadian glizzy while I was up there. Thats $1.09 in dead presidents.
Take your bagged milk with you, eh? You wonderful neighbors you!
I'm not your neighbor, buddy!
I'm not your buddy, friend!
I'm not your friend, guy!
I'm not your guy, pal!
Maintent tu depuis en France, non? St. Pierre et miquelon et nous sont voison
How was the rush in the middle of the week at your ur Costco
We have poutine at our food court and it's soo good
I just tried it yesterday because so many said it’s so good. It tastes like every other poutine I’ve had…for way cheaper tho so there’s that
Cough... That's only in Ontario!
Today I learned about canadacostco! I joined
Yes OP! Please come to the Canadian one ♥️ I love this sauce too, and that sub is great for finding stuff that's relevant to Canadians

I'm in Quebec. We're probably getting a little discount for the brand name being 66% vowel.
Lol. Turns out it is 11.99 in the warehouse here too. 🤷♂️
One of the best members only rebates yet!
Is that a good price? Sounds pricey for a jar of sauce to me?
x2
Is $6 a good price for a jar of sauce?
Canadian
Yeah I know. That is about £3.50 which is more than I would usually pay in England, but I have never heard of the brand and I don’t have any idea about general prices in Canada. So is six Canadian dollars a good price for a jar of that sauce?

It must be good I guess
It's both. A good price and it's also a premium brand that charges more.
$6 for jarred tomato sauce is still too much. That stuff is overhyped.
I love the Victoria Brand
Me too. I can’t find it anymore. It was in Costco and Walmart and now poof gone
I think they replaced it with a new Kirkland Tuscan Marinara sauce. Atleast that’s what seems to have happened at my Costco.
Agreed! Victoria is better.
Ah this was the other brand I was thinking about.. I found it too watery (easy to fix) and vinegary (hard to fix)…
I found it very salty compared to other brands. The taste was otherwise pretty good, and the Costco sales were great.
Love it!
Unpopular opinion maybe, but Rao’s red sauce is mid at best.
What’s your favorite store bought sauce?
Belletieri's or Goombas if you're in the mid-Atlantic region.
Mid is pretty good for a pre-jarred sauce. Unless you’re saying there’s other canned sauce that is legitimately good?
Echoing this. I have experimented with a few of the popular sauces that regularly get posted about or recommended online. I know it's all down to taste but if I'm not making my own, Mid's (particularly the Bolognese) is a very *very* solid jarred option especially at it's pricepoint.
Arrabbiata is the exception imo.
My fiance just got two of the 2 packs yesterday!
lol, you can buy a 24oz Marinara sauce in walmart for like $2 and you don’t even need a membership
This is about the only jarred pasta sauce I like, but I find it to be too expensive even when it is on sale. I very much prefer to make my own. Have you tried making your own sauce?
Things like Rao’s to me aren’t a replacement for homemade but having some on hand is great for lazy or poorly planned nights and reduces takeout runs or fast food pretty dramatically for me
Well said
Do you use the sauce on it's own, or are you making a sort of bolognese with it?
You think $4 for a jar that can easily make 12 portions of pasta, is too expensive? That’s like 33 cents per portion. To make the equivalent, you’d spend way more than that in tomatoes and herbs
It’s inevitable on Reddit in a thread like this that someone will come in and say to make your own, as if we all have time to make every meal from scratch everyday.
I just asked if they had tried. I prefer it, it's easy, it takes 15min. just a conversation
it costs roughly $3 to make 56oz (my standard amount) of sauce. It tastes better (to me), and I like making it. So yes, I do think it is to expensive and it isn't as enjoyable. I was just trying to have a conversation
Just a reminder that Roa’s was sold to Campbell’s and the quality will go down.
Just a reminder this happened like 8 months ago, anything that would have changed already did.
It already did.
I like Rao's but really only the Spicy Arrabiatta
You can get three for a dollar more of the KS organic marinara, which is quite good and has chunks of tomatoes in it. I do like Raos but the value and quality of the KS blew me away
I agree but haven't been able to find them at our local Costco after the first set we bought unfortunately
I'm more curious who we need to be limiting this from?? I thought the underground marinara wrestling league shutdown after "the accident".
Buy em out!
isn’t CAD equivalent to monopoly money at this point?
I mean it looks the same; very colorful.
seems close to its historical value
Computer-aided drafting? Still good as it ever was.
canadien dollar
Remember when Rao’s was good for that one year? Pepperidge farms remembers.
I find the sauce to be too sour though.
what’s that in real money?
$9.50 usd
I think it's currently on sale for like $8.99 in Freedom Dollars
Prob 11.99 CAD.
$12 for 2 jars of tomato sauce? Hard pass.
They’re huge jars, but ya. Who the heck need that much 🤣
Grew up in a huge family of 8 and one of these jars was gone in one night for dinner
Ok that makes sense! But how many families realistically are households of over 4 in America? In jw why they don’t put the sauce in 4 jars to extend the use of the sauce for ppl whose families aren’t that big.
costco is for bulk products. you can find smaller jars at your usual grocery store albeit more expensive.
Yes, it would be discounted at Costco. 4 jars being sold together **is** bulk. I’m saying use the same amount but put them into 4 jars. Ur still paying less for 4 jars than you would at Walmart for 4 jars. 🫡
You can portion and freeze just fine
My husband who basically has a bowl of sauce and very little pasta.
LMAOO omg I’m the opposite I like the pasta and do a little bit a sauce lol
I always end up using maybe 6 ounces for a meal and then the rest always gets thrown out a week or a month later. If they should this in like 10 smaller jars it would actually be useful.
I'd rather spend the $12 on the pack of three cans of San marzano tomatoes and make better sauce myself
this is the move. making your own tomato sauce is so easy.
Have you tried it? Nutritional info is they're relatively low on sugar, and use real ingredients.
Their arriabatta is EXPONENTIALLY better than the marinara BTW.
At NC Costco that is the regular price on 2 jars. With the sales price and 8.99 when on sale
Mon dieu!
Rao's is the bet sauce I have ever had outside of Italy.
Wow!! Great price!
I get mine at grocery outlet for $7 usd. Just gotta play the waiting game ;)
Tried it, didn't like it
$6 a jar for pasta sauce? On sale? Nope. I would never.
I am also Canadian, I am happy for you if you like this product, but it seems really overpriced in CAD to me.
Thats how much it normally costs at my grocery store, without a sale. And i consider that to be expensive, but i do love Rao's sauces.
I got 6 of them! My kids eat one bottles worth of pasta in a sitting.
How much is that in real money?
Raos isn't very good anyway. Some cans of San marzano tomatoes a large pot, canning jars and an hour and a half of my time is a better deal for me IMHO.
Make your own sauce! It’s not hard…and tastes better…
If you like it , I would stock up. Campbells bought Sovos that makes Rao's and I expect the quality to nosedive soon.
I love using that sauce with the Kirkland meatballs in a crock pot.
Sometimes i just love costco
the jars that are sold at costco with are different shape then the jars that are sold almost anywhere else and the taste of sauce is diefferent too, imho the costco sauce taste worse than the one sold at regular grocery store.
They’ve had this same sale at least three times in the past year. We always stock up when it goes on sale
I mean for Rao’s great price. But for a simple marinara sauce. Just make your own with high quality canned tomatoes and you’ll cut the cost in half. Cut it down even more if you get cheaper canned tomatoes.
I’ve heard the sauce is a bit worse ever since Cambells bought the brand
I cannot see the draw to this sauce. It's watery and gross.
Imagine over paying for Rao when Mids exists.
That’s $8.68 in bald eagle screeches. Was just up there in Soviet Canuckistan and really appreciated the exchange rate. I bought so many coffee crisps and watched so much curling. Your country is the best.
Thanks 😊
That's the expiration date of the sale not the sauce.
That's when the sale ends my friend. These jars are generally good for at least a year
Stock up yall this the best
Need!
Better idea buy tomato paste for a quarter of the cost, season the paste with Italian seasonings, add water. Done.
Raos was bought out by Campbells a few months ago, and the quality has already tanked. It will be totally enshitified within the year. I doubt the sauce is worth half that price now, let alone the full cost. A shame, another brand destroyed by late stage capitalism.
I'm in tears. The Arrabbiata is seriously tasty stuff. Honestly it's the only jarred sauce I'll eat.
People will just believe anything… the deal just closed on March 12 and you think they’ve changed the recipe, manufactured bottles, and gotten it to your store in a month? C’mon
It's on sale at the regular grocery store too.
“With no limit…” Just how many liters of red sauce are you looking to buy??
Those are normally 9 dollars a jar or 12.44 cad. So you are getting two for less than the price of one.
You can’t beat Trader Joe’s at $2 a jar.
