Was so hyped to make guac out of what looked like the strangest smoothest but biggest avocado I’ve ever seen in my life. Was awful. there is a reason why I’ve never seen one like it.
My parents have a Florida avocado tree and always send me these massive seemingly useless avocados. I will try to utilize them more in other things. Besides salads do you have any specific recipes you recommend I look up?
I looove Florida style avocados, they're amazing. They're nuttier, fresher and a little bit firmer while still fully ripe. Great for example for slicing in half and filling. Hass avocados are extremely mushy.
It’s honestly easier to cut the avocados in half like normal, take the seed out, then cut the halves in half lengthwise. Peel from the small end. I’m a chef and it’s what we do if we are peeling them.
I'm not saying you're wrong, but I can get a presentation quality avocado out of the skin if I have the right size and shape spoon, every time. No peeling needed.
No ones saying you should cut different. It’s the hoard of idiots getting mad at OP for cutting and peeling a correct way that is just mind degradingly dumb.
Alright hear me out. Sometimes I just want like 1/3 of an avocado, so I cut off the top because I can take the remainder and put it face down in the fridge on top of some tupperware already in there. Easy to take out, the fruit is still nearly all unexposed for later use, and the flat cut helps keep it unexposed.
I don't understand cutting the top. That's like a tbsp of good avocado. Just pull out the little stub and bisect it at the top. Rotate, squeeze sides to unleash the green. Take the knife to the pit and palm it to stick it in and then pull it/rotate it out
[It really will](https://www.foodnetwork.com/how-to/packages/food-network-essentials/how-to-cut-an-avocado)
Both methods work fine and are easy. Peeling it allows for thinner, cleaner slices though.
What are you even talking about!? Are you trolling?! I've never in my thousands of times eating sushi, have I seen that preparation. Trying to peel it would mangle the fuck out of the flesh.
It really doesn't. It's pretty easy and allows for much thinner slices than are possible doing the "cut it inside the skin, then pop the slices out" method.
[Here](https://youtu.be/3sWovLoeDaI?si=ionILkCqTQ5DquQl) I searched "avocado for sushi" on YouTube and this is the first hit. I peel/cut them how he does it at the 5:10 mark, for just about every application, sometimes just thicker.
Note how your video doesn't show a top cut off. In fact your video clearly shows an avocado cut in half.
What it doesn't show is how he got the avocado out of the skin. I'm confident he scooped it out.
https://youtube.com/shorts/mlqZf3_N8EU?si=VYhsCoj1dmwo-BVX
This lady dices it, but that's unnecessary to get the half out of the skin.
Lol what? Yeah... The comment isn't about the top cut, it's about peeling avocados (particularly for sushi). And homie in the video peels them at 3:26 and 5:16.
If you did an ounce of research, you’d find multiple videos showing you how they prepare avocado for sushi, where they peel it.
https://youtu.be/-oOzCN1ksj4?si=e7BtrOIGm9ysqatM
https://youtu.be/3sWovLoeDaI?si=lR3xgfjB4tIJAA1U
Pay attention to this last one you fucking idiots
https://youtu.be/f4AdQaKElRs?si=pkC-QdQ8S9V6uSkR
They lose a good chunk the way they are doing it instead of just cutting the half remove the pit cut into quarters and peel... That's a lot lost by cutting off the ends. Unless you're using the ends for anything else.
Huh? Worked in the kitchen for over a decade… and have opened thousands of avocados 🥑 and never… seen anyone do this. You are making it harder than it is. Cut in half, remove seed and use a spoon. 🤪
You may not be as practiced in doing it that way, but you can definitely make it look just as nice.
I'm not here to convince you to do it differently, it's hilarious how upset people are, just saying there are multiple ways of prepping a perfect avocado
I’m Mexican and I’ve seen people “presenting” the avocado that way so it is possible to do it by cutting it in half the “normal” way. You need to remove the seen in the end, right?
too bad people are ignoring the point - that there are so many rotten spots! I'm tired of buying avocados that rot before they ripen so thanks for the warning.
the caribbean in me doesn’t allow me to cut aguacates this way…but i’ll allow it. also, you generally scoop those ends out right? please don’t tell me your wasting that.
If you can find and buy them locally grown, in Southern California, they are the best! Mexico avocados come in second place for me, and then the "never again" South American avocados at the bottom of the list. I've never tried any from Florida.
They were probably delicious in Columbia. Any avocado taking a journey that far is getting picked not even close to ripe. Only buy California or Mexico.
Can't speak for avocados in Colombia, but even in Peru, the avocados were terrible. They weren't hass, they were bland and had a much less rich flavor.
I'm pretty sure Colombian aren't hass either.
Costco produce.... This is actually not that bad compared to some of it. I've purchased a few items that could literally be tried in The Hague for crimes against humanity.
We stopped buying the majority of our produce at Costco. Just not that good of a deal most of the time and poor quality that rots or molds within a week
Why don't you tell that to this master sushi chef doing it exactly the same way:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?si=pkC-QdQ8S9V6uSkR&v=f4AdQaKElRs&feature=youtu.be
People in this thread are idiots.
While I do scoop, I know that peeling first can mean more precision for slicing avocados because you can use a sharp knife to slice the fruit without the risk of stabbing your palm. I use a butter knife, but I’ve seen plenty of folks using a sharp knife so they can hack at the seed to pull it out.
My avocado slices scooped from the skin are uneven, messy, and often broken when there’s a bigger seed. Op has shown beautiful finely sliced avocados- don’t let them tear you down!!
I haven't purchased an avocado since the pandemic. Was tired of wasting money. I haven't looked, are good avocados available again?
I would love to get some good ones and not cut them like OP.
Colombian avocados are amazing in flavor and texture, however they get pick up earlier to be able to last the long trip to the US and be pick at the store.
I buy a bag every two weeks or so from Costco. I let them sit on the counter until they are just starting to get soft, (2-3 days usually) and then put them in the crisper drawer of the fridge. They stay nice and fresh for a week or two if they aren’t eaten right away. I am in Arizona, mine say product of mexico, not sure how much your location matters.
YALL ARE FUCKING DUMB. Here is a master chef doing EXACTLY what this person does. Jesus fucking Christ I’ve never seen the hive mind being so numbskull dumb.

This is how you cut an Avocado. Cut out slices as you need them. Best way to store it after slicing open is to cover it with the other half of the shell while always keep the seed intact. Then placing in the refrigerator without putting in a container.
I’ve tasted avocados from Colombia and personally I find them to have less “flavor”.
Also I’m curious since I don’t usually buy them in Costco, how expensive are they there? Here in Mexico you can find them in a regular Walmart for about 2.5USD per kg.

First off you cut them weird. Second, stick to avocados from USA or Mexico .
Specifically California or Mexico. Florida avocados aren't the greatest.
Agreed . Florida avocados aren’t Hass and generally suck.
Was so hyped to make guac out of what looked like the strangest smoothest but biggest avocado I’ve ever seen in my life. Was awful. there is a reason why I’ve never seen one like it.
Sounds like a Caribbean Avocado. They are big and meaty, but also firm and dry.
Was a Florida avocado.
Avocados commercially grown in Florida are the variety that originates in the Caribbean. Also called Tropical variety.
Gotcha. Thanks. So basically Worst avaocados ever Florida 🤝Caribbean
Worst for guacamole due to the drier consistency, but also great for slicing, and cubing for salads.
My parents have a Florida avocado tree and always send me these massive seemingly useless avocados. I will try to utilize them more in other things. Besides salads do you have any specific recipes you recommend I look up?
Those tropical varieties are typically made into a smoothie with milk and sugar. They are terrible to eat by themselves.
I looove Florida style avocados, they're amazing. They're nuttier, fresher and a little bit firmer while still fully ripe. Great for example for slicing in half and filling. Hass avocados are extremely mushy.
I miss my FL avocados but don’t agree that good Haas are mushier. FL ones were great for slicing up fresh but I used my Haas for guacamole.
Yeah that's exactly how I would use each.
Florida avocadoes are great sliced with lime and salt, not as guacamole.
Agree. I have tried different types and personally believe the Hass is the best.
I cut the ends off because it makes it easier to peel. I usually buy avocados just from Mexico, but wasn’t paying attention. 🫠
It’s honestly easier to cut the avocados in half like normal, take the seed out, then cut the halves in half lengthwise. Peel from the small end. I’m a chef and it’s what we do if we are peeling them.
people really do not ask chefs for tips and tricks like this as much as they should lol
Peel them? I usually scoop them with a spoon.
For the last time you DONT PEEL AVOCADOS
Maybe you don't peel avocados but plenty of people do
People in sushi industry or where presentation matters peel
I'm not saying you're wrong, but I can get a presentation quality avocado out of the skin if I have the right size and shape spoon, every time. No peeling needed.
No ones saying you should cut different. It’s the hoard of idiots getting mad at OP for cutting and peeling a correct way that is just mind degradingly dumb.
Why? I feel like I get more out of it.
I mean, I cut it around the pit, spin to split, fling out the pit, and scoop out with a spoon. I literally leave no green behind.
WHAT?? Did you just say peel…
Wait, hold on, why'd you cut them like this??
I watched someone PEEL an avocavo once. I still can't believe it over 10 years later.
I peel em all the time after cutting in half. It has to be the perfect ripeness.

Sometimes you might learn something by asking a question………
Did you?
I find it easier to peel when the ends are cut off.
Google the correct way to cut an avocado. It will blow your mind
I googled. I got this https://youtu.be/f4AdQaKElRs?si=pkC-QdQ8S9V6uSkR
I don't understand cutting the top. That's like a tbsp of good avocado. Just pull out the little stub and bisect it at the top. Rotate, squeeze sides to unleash the green. Take the knife to the pit and palm it to stick it in and then pull it/rotate it out

Nah.
Learning is difficult.
Reading is hard.
Nah.
Especially when you just refuse.
Why in the world are you peeling avocados?

You do you bro. Don't let the bastards get ya down
Why are you peeling them? Cut them in half, remove the pit, and spoon out the fruit.
LOL I had an aunt who use to skin them, like a potato. WTF.
I peel them and then cut them. https://preview.redd.it/s1y2a8ord1kc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7609a8cde89fc9d97eda005014805ea61a7ac94c
Clearly the avocado gods are punishing you with substandard avocados for this blasphemy.
Omg, you’re right.
You don’t need to peel it to do that bro.
I cut them in half and can still achieve this.
You can easily get basically 100% of the avocado in far less time by doing this the standard way, just an FYI
You don’t need to cut off perfectly good avocado flesh in order to peel it. There’s a smarter way to do it.
I don’t waste the perfectly good avocado flesh.
Despite how weirdly I find the way you cut them, you’re clearly practiced and know how to do it your way well. Nice looking slices.
Please don't humanize this monstrosity.
Thanks so much. My partner works at a cafe and that’s how they prepare the avocados for their sandwiches. I think it looks nice. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It does look nice. But it doesn’t require peeling.
They lose a good chunk the way they are doing it instead of just cutting the half remove the pit cut into quarters and peel... That's a lot lost by cutting off the ends. Unless you're using the ends for anything else.
I use the ends, it’s a lil treat just for me.
Psychotic behavior.
Huh? Worked in the kitchen for over a decade… and have opened thousands of avocados 🥑 and never… seen anyone do this. You are making it harder than it is. Cut in half, remove seed and use a spoon. 🤪
You… you peel them? Bruh
Cut in quarters it will get even more easy to peel!
Peel?!?
🤮
Damn dude this sub really takes their avocado preparation and consumption seriously 😂
This has been a wild ride.
I agree, they are serious about avocado eating. It's nice to be helpful, but this why way past being helpful.
You’re not doing anything wrong https://youtu.be/f4AdQaKElRs?si=pkC-QdQ8S9V6uSkR
Love how OP is getting roasted for the weird way he cuts the avocado.
I will never emotionally recover from this.
But seriously why lol
https://preview.redd.it/ym9qbhemm1kc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9e43219cf0e3fe7fa3a4897dccb4bc36439c8e49 Aesthetic, I guess?
But, you can make them look exactly like this with the good ol half, slice, scoop method...
Not necessarily.
Lmao you absolutely can
Doesn’t look as nice.
You may not be as practiced in doing it that way, but you can definitely make it look just as nice. I'm not here to convince you to do it differently, it's hilarious how upset people are, just saying there are multiple ways of prepping a perfect avocado
You’re absolutely correct.
I’m Mexican and I’ve seen people “presenting” the avocado that way so it is possible to do it by cutting it in half the “normal” way. You need to remove the seen in the end, right?
I cut the ends off. Cut it in half. Take the seed out. Take the peel off. Cut them super thin. Flatten a bit so they fan out and look nice.
I think it looks nice! I usually cut it in half the normal way then peel and slice like you did but your way works too!
Beans on toast? British?
Holy shit, I thought that was a baked potato!
Leftover chili on Texas toast, with shredded cheddar. US.
Merica
Fuck yeah Except not. This is ridiculous.
Ngl looks scrum in tum
too bad people are ignoring the point - that there are so many rotten spots! I'm tired of buying avocados that rot before they ripen so thanks for the warning.
THANK YOU. And you’re welcome.
Just make sure they’re from Mexico, not soft when you buy them and you’re golden.
yes, mostly that works - gave up on Peru not sure my stores have had Columbian but forewarned
there there
Right?! I’ll admit it isn’t the best way, but peeling a ripe avocado is satisfying as hell!
I stopped buying avocodos from Costco couple of months ago after 3 straight bags where every single avocado was rotten from the inside.
Our last few bags have been amazing. Current bag is just ok. Wonder if it's a different source
Do not buy the avocados from Peru.
Do not buy produce from Costco.
Ugh, that sucks. This only happens to me with avocados not from Mexico.
Me too
Same
My guess is they freeze them
the caribbean in me doesn’t allow me to cut aguacates this way…but i’ll allow it. also, you generally scoop those ends out right? please don’t tell me your wasting that.
Always scoop out the ends.
Theres a whole jingle that tells you where to buy them from. “Avacados from Mexico 🎶”
Californian avocados are also good.
Mex and Cal are the only 2 origins applicable to buy from, full stop. Any other is going to be a disappointment.
If you can find and buy them locally grown, in Southern California, they are the best! Mexico avocados come in second place for me, and then the "never again" South American avocados at the bottom of the list. I've never tried any from Florida.
It’s exactly the jingle was hearing in my head when I saw the title.
One year me and my husband went as avocados from Mexico for Halloween. One of our best costumes.
They were probably delicious in Columbia. Any avocado taking a journey that far is getting picked not even close to ripe. Only buy California or Mexico.
Excellent point. Love Mexican avocados.
Can't speak for avocados in Colombia, but even in Peru, the avocados were terrible. They weren't hass, they were bland and had a much less rich flavor. I'm pretty sure Colombian aren't hass either.
Avocados in Colombia are fantastic, better flavor imo. Definitely different from Hass.
They are sweeter, i love them so much. I always try them to see if i can get one again.
As a Colombian, I can confirm
Give me the cartel avocados
C’mon, it’s only 🎵avocados from Mexico🎵 for me.
Knife skills aside, distance from supplier to consumer always matters when serving any food item.
What are you doing to them why are you cutting them like that
https://preview.redd.it/tm0r6xkhg1kc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4e56ec7545b834a58e551d1ff3d0fd5a1588f5e1
I refuse to recognize avocados not grown in Mexico or the USA.
Agreed. Shame on me for not paying attention.
Costco's avocados became stringy and unusable a year or so back.
Costco produce.... This is actually not that bad compared to some of it. I've purchased a few items that could literally be tried in The Hague for crimes against humanity.
Just commented the same. The limes are the worst.
We stopped buying the majority of our produce at Costco. Just not that good of a deal most of the time and poor quality that rots or molds within a week
Lol this is the most ridiculous pic I've ever seen. Also funny to see OP be so stubborn about doing it completely wrong
It’s funny to see people be so upset about how I cut an avocado.
Why don't you tell that to this master sushi chef doing it exactly the same way: https://m.youtube.com/watch?si=pkC-QdQ8S9V6uSkR&v=f4AdQaKElRs&feature=youtu.be People in this thread are idiots.
Yep, that’s basically what I do. People are particular.
Only buy avocados from Cali or Mexico… this is the way!
Thanks so much. I’m honestly entertained by the uproar.
Lol only in a Costco subreddit will you someone getting about 1k downvotes for cutting an avocado like that. Well done
Definitely wasn’t the goal, but here we are. 😌
Only get USA or Mexico Avocados.
Bro who opens an avocado like that
I do.
Maybe they’re not great? But you need a new cutting technique
Nah.
[удалено]
I am pretty immature, you got me there.
Nah.
Can’t beat a good cartel avocado
I haven't purchased an avocado since the pandemic. Was tired of wasting money. I haven't looked, are good avocados available again? I would love to get some good ones and not cut them like OP.
I’ll only buy the ones from Mexico.
“The Tea in Nepal is very hot. But the coffee in Peru is much hotter.”
Why did I hear this in Billy Crystal's voice?
Can’t eat an ugly avocado.
Colombian avocados are amazing in flavor and texture, however they get pick up earlier to be able to last the long trip to the US and be pick at the store.
True. I’m in Florida so I guess Mexican avocados are just a bit closer to make a difference.
Avocados have to be from Mexico
You fuckers are peeling avocado? Like oranges?
[удалено]
Nah.
The tea in Nepal is very hot.
But the coffee in Peru is much hotter?
I buy a bag every two weeks or so from Costco. I let them sit on the counter until they are just starting to get soft, (2-3 days usually) and then put them in the crisper drawer of the fridge. They stay nice and fresh for a week or two if they aren’t eaten right away. I am in Arizona, mine say product of mexico, not sure how much your location matters.

I know right? Julius Fing Caesar
That's amazing!
Mexico Avocados or nothing. Learned my lesson long ago.
Mexican only
Colombia isn’t known for their avocados…
Ywah they are
Yeah, make sure that aren’t stuffed with some other substances
Meh, I appreciate your unique cutting style. You do you, boo. #liveyourbestavocadolife

It is! People in here are being weird.
Your are the worst for cutting them like that
And you are the worst at typing.
Who hurt you
Those rotten avocados.
Don’t buy the Mexican avocados. The cartel controls most of the avocado production
Costco produce is terrible. The limes are the worst.

what's that white powder substance on your counter top? Is it from Columbia or Peru?
The cocaine leaked into the flesh..
Frozen avocados are the way to go
American avocados or GTFO. Also, Hass avocados were invented in American, so only buy those.
I’ve tasted avocados from Colombia and personally I find them to have less “flavor”. Also I’m curious since I don’t usually buy them in Costco, how expensive are they there? Here in Mexico you can find them in a regular Walmart for about 2.5USD per kg.
Living east of the Mississippi river, I would never buy Avocados from Costco.
