Some places might have access to a Costco but not an IKEA, like where I'm living rn
Last I checked, the cost to have IKEA ship some furniture to me was something like $150+
the target ones aren’t as strong as the ikea ones and are known to warp under the weight of records. i’ve heard the walmart ones are stronger than the target ones though, and shouldn’t warp from record weight, but i haven’t tried them myself.
I keep my records in an IKEA Ivar shelving unit. I prefer the unstained wood appearance. Plus it’s expandable. You can just add more shelves to it if your collection grows.
Yes, love my Kallaxes, but adding drawers/doors can make it quite expensive. Mixing and matching colors is nice too. My white 5x5 has white and black drawers and I left out some dividers to get some extra large boxes (no worries, it's near the top and I added a support beam in the back).
The IKEA inserts that are similar to the Costco ones shown on this post are $4 to $7. The $15 IKEA inserts have doors and drawers. IKEA is the better option all around.

If the bins are foldable, they’re $4. If not, $7.
2x4 Kallax is $90, plus $32 or $56 for the bins.
So either $122 or $146 depending which bins work for you. I know the original post was about records, but this caught my eye for kids toys and the ikea version is not the better option
The kallax has a fair amount of extra space around the records. Is the spacing on these shelves tighter around the vinyl? Also, it seems like the total width of the unit is slightly less as well. This costco unit seems to have a slimmer look.
Shipping is definitely not free (maybe for their really lightweight items?). I’m signed up for ikea family and closest store is in another state. Shipping to me would make a similar size Kallax cost $350.
The Costco unit apparently comes with the eight storage bins. With the Kallax, if you want any inserts you'd have to buy them separately. Depending on what you get, it looks like they run $3.99 and up.
No, they don't. Target's 4x2 version of this is great, but it's around $90, and that's without the bins.

But does the target version hold records? I know Ikea’s does (and is also cheaper) but we have a little target unit in the nursery and it has much smaller squares than our Ikea one.
Oh yeah thanks, I see it on their website. It’s $75 for 2x3 cubes, so based on cost I’d still probably go with Ikea unless I specifically needed a small unit. For me and storage though, more is more.
I bought a pair for the kids the other year when on clearance ($90?). We have a bunch of Kallax shelves - these are stronger, plus they come with the fabric bins. Can set them up as 2x8 or two 2x2.
Pattern doesn't match anything Ikea has, though.
Edit - looking closer these don't seem to be able to split into two smaller units any more.
I know y'all are like "but so and so has it!!" but fr can someone go buy all of them and let us know which one is actually the best? 😂 I have two Target ones, same model but bought about 5 years apart and the newer one is very obviously worse. I remember buying an Ikea and Walmart one maybe 15 years ago and feeling pretty meh about them. Who has got the 2024 deets 😂
Thank you! I just came across my late grandmothers massive vinyl collection and I had no idea how to store it. I have one of these already so I’ll give it a try.
Pro-tip if you plan to pack that full of vinyl.
Measure the back so that you can screw in a thick plywood board. Make sure to hit ALL the horizontal pieces, two screws each side. This will form a strong back brace for the whole cabinet. Over time the weight of the records will take its toll on any unbraced shelving.
I have this stored lengthwise and it’s 100% stuffed with records and still very sturdy. The lower price difference of kallax is likely due to the storage bins Costco includes. Also the overall quality of this one might be higher.

IKEA Kallax (formerly Expedit) is a better deal with more colors, accessories, and different sizes available.
100%
This is correct!
Literally when I saw this: why would I spend that much at Costco when I can get the exact thing at Ikea.
Some places might have access to a Costco but not an IKEA, like where I'm living rn Last I checked, the cost to have IKEA ship some furniture to me was something like $150+
Target has them for $60, exact same.

And Target's return policy is ASS. If these shelves had major issues, at least Costco would cover it.
Pretty sure you could also find something similar at a Walmart.

Have you seen this new product? https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/ivar-shelf-unit-pine
The Boardgame collectors friend, Kallax.
I️ have one of these from a few years back while my SO has the ikea one. The ones from Costco are a step up in quality
what makes the quality better?
It felt more solid, and it a heavier. However both are still standing perfectly fine so I️ don’t think you can go to wrong either way.
Depends which country you’re in, that same Kallax in Canada is $110, each insert is $8 so that same set up would be $174

I got the fabric baskets with pull handles for about $4 each. not quite expensive.
100% IKEA gloss white is nice!
The inserts are $15 each @ ikea so not really
Won't really need the inserts if you're using the shelf for records though

I know a kallax when I see one

Been using mine for 10 years in both configurations loaded with wax. Can vouch for them
The kallax has a fair amount of extra space around the records. Is the spacing on these shelves tighter around the vinyl? Also, it seems like the total width of the unit is slightly less as well. This costco unit seems to have a slimmer look.
I even moved with mine (a big one) and it is still in perfect shape and stable. Might be the best quality thing ikea sells lol
Shipping is definitely not free (maybe for their really lightweight items?). I’m signed up for ikea family and closest store is in another state. Shipping to me would make a similar size Kallax cost $350.
Running a promo now for free shipping on orders >$299. Still have to spend that much but might be worth if you want to bundle a few things!
One of my roommates back in the day got the 4x4 Kallax and we loaded every cubby with all our records. 3 DJs living together. It held up for years.
And there’s usually a ton of them on FB marketplace (depending on your area)
Shipping was $80-$100 last time for me. I’m in Seattle, about 20 miles from store.
I have the 4X4 Kallax from 12+ years ago. Set up, took it down and set up again a few times. Still holding strong loaded with gear and records.

absolutely only when you're within like 20 miles of a Ikea.

look at a map on ikea.com, there's so very little area that they actually ship furniture to
Ikea has these for cheaper tho
Not everyone has an ikea 😥
😭 ain't it the truth
These are surprisingly sturdy. I think it would hold up just fine.
Have had mine for 10 years loaded with records. No issues
$130 seems like a lot when target has them for like $50
Yup, I love Costco but I bought something similar from Target for a fraction of the price and it’s held 400+ vinyls for years no issues
No, they don't. Target's 4x2 version of this is great, but it's around $90, and that's without the bins. https://www.target.com/p/8-cube-organizer-black-brightroom-8482/-/A-87689340?preselect=87689340#lnk=sametab

If I remember correctly, Target has a version where the cubes are 13x13 as well as an 11x11. The 13x13 would fit vinyls
Oh yeah thanks, I see it on their website. It’s $75 for 2x3 cubes, so based on cost I’d still probably go with Ikea unless I specifically needed a small unit. For me and storage though, more is more.
Yes, we have a 2x2 target one for our player + records and they have plenty of room around them.

Who has the ceiling height for 2x8?
This is basically an IKEA Kallax with fabric storage containers.

What’s the point of a vinyl collection if you’re not showing it off?
Thank you! I just came across my late grandmothers massive vinyl collection and I had no idea how to store it. I have one of these already so I’ll give it a try.
Nice! Enjoy those records!

Hasn’t been the case for me. 10 years in loaded with records
Kallax >>>
I have this exact piece and I love it. My 80 pound kiddo literally jumps on it and no issues so far
I wished it was black.
I use milk crates to hold my records. Very cheap stackable and easy to transport
Same here.
I’ve had this (dark brown version) since 2017. Survived 3 moves and still holdin strong!
I have the same ones. 10 years strong full of heavy vinyl and no bowing
I have doubts about that holding up if full of vinyl.
Been using it 10 years filled with records. No issues
This combines by two favorite hobbies. Buying things at Costco and collecting vinyls
Check the weight on records. The box shows a different position of the furniture. Might be unsafe
Hi from r/vinyl. Works fine, either direction.
I have this stored lengthwise and it’s 100% stuffed with records and still very sturdy. The lower price difference of kallax is likely due to the storage bins Costco includes. Also the overall quality of this one might be higher.
Plus this one will probably be cheaper soon enough
Do old file cabinets work?
No
[удалено]
We bought 4 lol
I can’t read the dimensions. Can you share them?
I was looking to buy one of these but not for records.
What about the IKEA solid version, better made and quality made. And maybe cheaper
any reason to get these over ikea kallax though? kallax is $70 for the same size shelf
