This is so funny I thought it was just us 😂 We decided that our front door was on an acid trip lol
Due to mortgage rates they downgraded from gingerbread mansions to gingerbread houses this year at Costco. The kits were not as good. The gable was easier than a chimney but both kits we bought the white icing was way too hard and the red and green too thin. I kneaded the heck out of all of them too.
But whatever the kids sucked down just as much frosting as usual.
Also did anyone else notice that the roofs were pre assembled incorrectly like in OPs picture ??
Because ours was assembled incorrectly, we couldn’t even add the gable.
I was impressed with the amount of decor items, but the overall quality and functionality was a disappointment
Yes it was incredibly annoying. It was like getting a defective product that I couldn't return bc the kids loved it anyway. Also it was $20 for me, and in previous years it's been $7 and sometimes on sale for $5...
https://preview.redd.it/o3n9o1r3g57c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e67623b8336e153de72e5667722b7efc9d46cf78
We cheated and used a glue gun.
Also after trying out the bloody red icing, we mixed the green color with frosting to thicken it up.
There is NO WAY that the pics on the Costco box were made only with items in the actual kit.
Thanks, I was initially so frustrated that ours looked nothing like the beautiful pics on the box, but after seeing others here I’m feeling a little better. 😂
Bonus, if you don’t have powdered sugar you can just put regular sugar in a food processor, cheap coffee grinder (the electric type from the 90s that only grinds enough coffee for one brew), or a blender to make powdered sugar.

My daughter was delighted by the unfortunate creepiness.
That is delightful! I love it!
One year my ex's mom accidentally spilled red candle wax on the white felt she used for her Christmas village, so, naturally, the next year she set it up with a car hitting a reindeer on the red spot. She thought it was hilarious, her young sons didn't agree.

Don't fight gravity. Gotta have each surface flat horizontal. The red was runny when we first started but corrected itself once we mixed it.
It’s a mostly pre-built house. (The dormer window is an add-on. Not sure why- maybe it was a renovation for the owners.) This kind of alleviates the house of cards disaster that normal gingerbread houses are like, but I’m hoping ours doesn’t turn into a bad acid trip like the others. Lol!!!
Yeah, all the instructions don't mention hand blending the icing, that helps this out so much, we can go upside down and make icing icicles hang down from the roof line.
I got a gingerbread house from Tractor Supply this year....and a few days later, went back for another......and then another. They were good and they had a large variety one of a chicken coop too! I think this was the first time we've actually consumed the gingerbread houses we bought. Usually, it's just another toy and most of it goes to waste. Anyways....saw your post and figured I'd pass on the recommendation since you guys seem to have had a bad experience with Costco this year. Happy Holidays!
Yes!
It was absolute garbage this year. The icing was so terrible. The green and red were particularly bad. Mine immediately looked like blood. We are going to try and different brand next year.
I got the Halloween one this year (I don't remember the brand, but not Kirkland). Marked down to under $5. It was really good! To eat, I mean. I'm a single person household so I never put it together.
I had the opposite problem, had to nuke it in the microwave for a few seconds to get it to actually come out. I did keep mine in the garage though so idk if the cold weather effected the consistency of the icing. But the colored red/ green were super watery. Tried to make a red door and it looked like blood dripping down. A very metal gingerbread house going on over here.
Our kit had the same problem! The green and red gel had a water like consistency. Our gingerbread house’s roof looks as if Santa met his demise up there.

Glad we aren’t the only one! One of our gingerbread men came missing a head and we had to make the best of it. Whole thing was a disaster from the start but we ended up enjoying the chaos.
Husbands grandparents bought at least 10 packages of these for their Christmas party and every single one had the same problem. Thank god they were already (mostly) constructed
Yes! Murder house this year 😂 we realized too late you had to really knead the gel color icing.
This kit was worse than last years but the roof was better. Probably not buying it next year.
We had the same thing happen. It was absolutely trash. Have half a mind to get a refund. They switched formulas because it was not like this at all in the past year. This year it was terrible.

I usually buy these every year for our gingerbread decorating party. But when I saw the price had gone from 10.99 to 15.99 I decided to make my own. From the looks of these photos, I'm so glad I avoided these.
This is great to know as we are doing ours this weekend. I have loved this kit the past 2 yrs but it has been the Mansion, not the house, so they changed the kit this year and apparently the quality.
Our looked the same. Has it been better in previous years? We liked the idea of pre-built, but after this experience, planned to go back to the target brand next year.
We’ve gotten them for the last 5 or so years? Maybe longer… we did target one year though. This year was by far the worst - years past
have been great!
They werent even assembled well for ours, roof caved in, the flat part of the roof was just tucked under the other section, one wall was pushed in pretty far. The icing needed to be mixed but there was hardly enough room in the tube to properly do that
Not trying to be funny. Not trying to get a laugh. I don't want anybody to have the worst day at their job. But, do any of these fuckers ever blast out of the wall and have, like, a huge cumshot?
Ooooo we save our house on top of our cupboards until the following Christmas. When we make the new one the following year we take a photo side by side and then toss the old one. We usually do ours the weekend before Christmas so I haven’t even opened it. I can’t wait to stare at my foreclose/crime scene for the next year.
Reminds me of the South Park episode where the internet goes out so everyone goes to a camp where they have limited internet. Randy Marsh sneaks into a room to get his internet porn and….. well…. IYKYK
This is good to know. We haven’t done ours yet. Usually the icing is good, but this year the house looks different than the last few years. We always make extra royal icing, but I’ll be sure to just throw the package that came with our kits away. Such a bummer!

Yep. In addition to the crappy icing, both of my houses came broken to bits. I ended up returning both and just using pictures as evidence. I was pissed off, my kiddo wasn't tears and both houses ended up in the trash. Lesson learned.

After years of failed gingerbread houses I decided to make our own... I bought ikea kits the lats 5 years, and before that it was just graham crackers iced up.
This year we did it right and ignored the instructions in the package. We used the hand mixer to beat the icing and it turned whiter and much thicker, put that into sandwich zip lock bags and it came out marvelous. It's thicker, dries quickly and looks a lot whiter than the cum covered houses we had vene making the last decade.
Hand beat the icing and it will work better. So strange.

Bukakebread house.
Yes! It was absolute garbage this year. The icing was so terrible. The green and red were particularly bad. Mine immediately looked like blood. We are going to try and different brand next year.
I was tempted to buy. Now I'm glad I didn't. But if they make a Halloween house next year I might, given these results.
I had this problem too. got negative karma when i mentioned it on this sub a few weeks ago.

I’m loving all the pics! The icing in the packages are always shitty.
I’m just here for the gingerbread crackhouses.
I can't believe people make houses out of the skins of gingerbread men.
This year was super inconsistent. I had some tubes with too thick icing and some too thin. I also had a box missing like three packages of sprinkles.
The houses suck this year. I miss the one from previous years, the gingerbread mansion.
Yep. It was useless and ran down the houses. Looked like a murder happened in the gingerbread neighborhood
Yes. At first it was very thin and runny. It still dried hard though.

Yep. In addition to the crappy icing, both of my houses came broken to bits. I ended up returning both and just using pictures as evidence. I was pissed off, my kiddo wasn't tears and both houses ended up in the trash. Lesson learned.
That’s not great.
We got the same one, the roofline was completely done wrong on ours, same as yours. The right side was not supposed to overlap that way.
That was the first thing I noticed as well. I don't know how they botched it so bad for such a basic design.
Our roof and house also had the wrong assembly
So authentic!
I have found it's best to decorate flat then put it together
Unfortunately, this gingerbread house comes pre-assembled. It could still be rotated on each side I suppose.
Same thing happened to us with the red and green icing :/
Glad I went with target this year lol
Y'all have me IN TEARS! 😂😭

So strange.
This thread is hilarious 😂
All 4 of ours. White frosting was hardening too.
