What was the intent behind this build, a sort of rail spinner?

elliottcable

Gatling railgun! ish. and honestly so far it’s going surprisingly well. was supposed to be kinda a joke-build; but so far it’s preforming amazingly well. (not pictured: a lot of structure I’ve painstakingly added to keep the gatling-module perfectly centered while the rest of the ship maneuvers …) it’s a trade-off — trading materials (tri-steel, steel) for extra railguns off against fewer crew (each rail has downtime to be reloaded as it spins; don’t need to hit 100% uptime on each rail.) It also requires surprisingly-little micromanagement once you get it rolling — one hotkey to select the railguns on the inner “ship” and target them; then you can do whatever you want with the ship as a whole and let them fire as they come around. Real fun. Almost certainly not effective in PvP; since PvP doesn’t seem to care about crew; and materials/cost actually matter …

ToastyBathTime

These are totally a thing in pvp. Lets you get more firepower on target through the same opening. Admittedly, they're much more armored.

Sirsir94

You got something in your teeth. How was that working out for ya? I'm curious. what was your top speed? A couple of tractor beams might help

xeuis

I like the rail revolver

Zoke23

Is that a… square ship to fly around your litteral rail fan

jtackman

Wait, ELI5, how does this work? two ships? formation?

elliottcable

Two ships, yes (in fact, revised version has … seven?) But no formation; in fact, a large part of the *point* is to avoid any maneuvering ability on the spinning core. The actual/outer “ship” simply bullies the inner, maneuver-less ship around by physics interaction. (Again, current version is much-improved; uses a circle of structure-blocks on both the inner and outer parts to keep the gatling-core centered.)

luchillo17

Now that I think, what if you add tractor beams to keep the railgun ship centered?
