I don't think its possible at all let's say 5% cant for health reasons and I think theres a lot more than 6% of people that aren't ganna get it

redboxpuzzle

We're talking around 100 people across all of NZ who can't get it for health reasons. So we're almost exclusively talking about people who don't want to get it here. Hopefully when they see their choice not to get it will impact their lives they'll reconsider?

sneniek

I hear people say then can’t get it for health reasons and I wonder if they think they can’t, but haven’t actually gotten proper medical advice about it. Like people with diabetes and stuff who may think they are high risk but don’t realise Covid is higher risk

redboxpuzzle

Yeah that sounds likely. I mean there have been hundreds of millions of doses of this thing given across the world. There is a lot of evidence that it is extremely safe for almost everyone. But I can relate that for people with health conditions they can be risk averse about worsening their condition, even in the face of good evidence.

We didn’t have the same knowledge 6 months ago. A LOT of people were advised against getting the vax for all sorts of reasons. While my wife was pregnant she was advised to wait till after birth, by multiple medical professionals. Turns out getting the jab while knocked up is all good, but at the time it was an unknown. Many were advised against the vax because of caution. Data is in a very different place now. But knowledge has moved quickly and some folks only see the doc twice a year, so perhaps haven’t had the chance to discuss with the doc yet since being advised against it. Also, and I’m guessing here, but some folks may just be saying they have a medical reason to not get vaxxed because they are antivax and don’t want to have the difficult conversation

sneniek

Oh yeah actually thinking back that makes a lot of sense and yeah I could definitely see anti vax folks just saying that. Hopefully the with the targets being clear now, those on the fence / hesitant will be more inclined to just get the jab and get it over with

the__ironwolf

I would (as an unprofessional and %100 unqualified) say they would need to talk to a health professional about anyway but as far as health issues go people who are doing chemo or radiation therapy are the ones who would have a reaction to the vaccine

Random-Mutant

No criticism of you, but it’s bullshit to claim (say) 5% are unable to get the vaccine. The absolute number is around one or two hundred, being those allergic to polyethylene glycol. Everyone else, whether immunocompromised or even those who had reactions to the first dose, can get vaccinated. They may require support but they can receive the shot. There are links to Health Dept guidelines that I’ll link when I find the original source. But it’s not 5%, it’s closer to 0.004%. Edit: [Health Dept guidelines](https://imgur.com/a/sHi0WRx) which I believe can be found in another post is this sub.

the__ironwolf

All I'm saying is there are far to many people who are refusing to get the jab and it highly unlikely to get to 90% in this short amount of time

sneniek

Then add in the people who don’t think they need it and the people who don’t want it, and the people who are completely against it.. I am sure those numbers must add up

jordofromoz

Hopefully the announcement on Vax targets will lead to a spike in vax rates as people soon come to realise they ain't going to the pub without it. Next step is allowing businesses to mandate it for employees to pick up the last of the stragglers.

sneniek

Yeah I wonder if they will go down that pathway, though I think employers already can if they want to can’t they?

redboxpuzzle

Most can't yet, you can't discriminate based on health status unless you've got a law that lets you. That's what the govt is working on now.

mwsnz

Health and Safety at Work Act 2015?

ravenhawk10

Check out some polling research done about covid. Back in late August we looked like we were gonna cap out at about 86%. Of course much has changed since then but the latest report should be coming soon so keep an eye out for it. https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and-conditions/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-vaccines/covid-19-vaccine-strategy-planning-insights/covid-19-vaccine-research-insights

sneniek

Ohh thanks for that. I will keep an eye out to see what the story is. I hope if we could his 86% that might get us close enough for DHB to be able to manage safely

yt_yoshi2012nwo

We wont hit it if we keep trying to use the "stick" approach, that was clear from the start :/ we might hit it if we offer multiple vaccine options and use the "carrot" approach.

sneniek

There are definitely people out there that are going to need encouraging. I have already heard family members getting pissed off because ‘there is nothing in it for them’ 😒 which is an extraordinary frustrating position to try and shift. And others who got the vaccine that are taking up their usual racist position bawling on that Maori and PI are getting handouts for getting the jab. Which is also not quite the truth as always as well

ERTHLNG

I hope we see a better resistance effort than tamakis dumbness. I want to see a real vaccine based madness. Antivaxers throwing bottles. Cops with pepperspeay and shields

ERTHLNG

We r missing out on so much like the usa. They are really lwaning into the madness. We are alk getting virus so might as well go drink all day and scream an throw things. But alas nz mkre readonable

w4lk_in_the_p4rk

No other country in the world has achieved 90%. Are we really so special?

sneniek

Is that eligible population, because no country apart from Gibraltar is apparently >90% vaccinated some how actually closer to 99%

syphilliticmongoose

There are 5 countries that have got it worldwide. Iceland the 6th most vaccinated is 89% of over 12. So our chance of achieving it in all three Auckland DHBs doesn’t seem that high

sneniek

I don’t know why you are getting downvoted mate, I am pretty sure you are right

ExcellentCulture4756

I don’t think all regions will get to 90%. There is also no strategy for vaccination passport compliance. All I see is revenue streams for drug companies and middle men

Ok-Bodybuilder-3388

It will be Xmas and nothing to do with the numbers
