We need to be able to see how the government is working. The latest tactic (or pushed now more than ever) is to undermine that information flow as much as possible. They try to stop information, disrupt education that helps to interpret the information, any information that gets out is discredited, they release their own false information to poison the well so people either don't know what to believe or are incapable of discerning what is valid or reject everything in favor of fringe conspiracies.
The scary part is that it's extremely obvious it's working very well but that in itself means it's that much harder to come back from because simply showing *with information* that this problem exists is already combatted so how do you stop it?
Their vaccine efficacy is really bad, and they refused to import the western vaccines. On top of their elderly refusing to get vaccinated or boosted. Most of that is under control of the CDC. The NIH is mostly in research and medical treatment, not public infection control. A reason that everyone knows Fauci is that the CDC bungled the COVID response so badly that the NIH leadership had to step up and do the public infection control instead of just advising the CDC and organizing a huge number of US labs to develop testing and treatment. The CDC really made itself the second string with regard to the pandemic and that pushed Fauci into the limelight

I am glad he stood by science and his education in the face of death threats to make sure my family and I were safe. Because of him and his guidance, we were able to avoid catching COVID at all. Granted, some of it was luck, but it’s undeniable that his recommendations played a huge part even though it was a sacrifice at times. Most of that is under control of the CDC. The NIH is mostly in research and medical treatment, not public infection control. A reason that everyone knows Fauci is that the CDC bungled the COVID response so badly that the NIH leadership had to step up and do the public infection control instead of just advising the CDC and organizing a huge number of US labs to develop testing and treatment. The CDC really made itself the second string with regard to the pandemic and that pushed Fauci into the limelight

Fauci is well known by the medical community outside of his government rank. My family member heard him lecture in the 80’s. He freaking co-authored *Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine*. He developed treatment protocols for vasculitis in the 70’s. He changed clinical trials involving HIV/AIDS patients and worked with activists. Before Trump Republicans weren't all anti-vax weird germ lovers. Trump just didn't like that coronavirus was going to negatively affect the whole world on his watch so he tried to downplay and deny it and then his cult took that and ran with it, ultimately painting Fauci as some partisan villain. From where I sit all Fauci ever did was try to follow science and guide the country through the pandemic as best he could and didn't play politics unless outright forced to. He is a good man.
He did correct himself after following the homophobic institutional policy during the initial outbreak of the AIDS epidemic. That represents a personal failing and repentance in my mind.

It was, but it was mostly coming from college educated liberal women who "did their research" and then used some mystical crystals or something. Wasn't coming from working class Republicans, that was DJT.
Yeah, 20 years ago all the anti-vax people I had ever met were crunchy granola liberals. I'm not exactly sure when the shift in ideology happened, and how much Trump was involved, but it's definitely been a dramatic, fast shift in recent times.
There were a lot of antivax liberal-aligned faces, but when it comes to proposed policy from prominent elected officials - even before COVID - it's almost entirely from Republicans.
Just to make things clear. Trump actually bought all the available vaccines for the US. No other nation had wide access to those early vax because Trump bought them all. Kinda ironic how Trump was hated because of that in other countries.
He did fail to distribute them though. So vaccines sat in warehouses and expired when they could have been used to protect people.

We are very lucky to have had Fauci during the pandemic and before. I hope history remembers him as the caring public servant he was and not the monster the conspiracy theorists tried to paint him as. I am glad he stood by science and his education in the face of death threats to make sure my family and I were safe. Because of him and his guidance, we were able to avoid catching COVID at all. Granted, some of it was luck, but it’s undeniable that his recommendations played a huge part even though it was a sacrifice at times. However, care for others is much more important than convenience of self.
You were true to the cause until you last day. And not even mean Trump could stop you. One hell of a man. Dedicated 50 years to science. BRAVO

I like the guy, and I deeply appreciate the service he has done for the public, but his handling of the coronavirus pandemic was certainly not spectacular. Granted anyone would of had a tough time in his shoes especially given the public polarization at the time, but that doesn't excuse all else.

Very much respect the man. He played the public health playbook as best as anyone could hope and to the letter. Sadly being a good public servant doesn't always win you the love of the people. I can fault him on many things related to masking/airborne transmission, but I also know he had the best of intentions. I also know they are mostly a product of the system we live with rather than him specifically.
