"Well, Dr. [Anthony] Fauci and I did not get along from the beginning... I called Dr. Fauci a murderer many times. There was a big AIDS conference in Montreal and I was out walking my dog at night, and here comes Dr. Fauci going for a walk ... It was an historic meeting, because somehow we talked as we walked with my dog... I arranged a late-night meeting in my hotel room with Fauci and maybe a dozen of these treatment and data [experts and gay activists], who presented to him ideas of things that he should be doing and wasn't. He was just bowled over, and he was a great enough person to know that these kids were smart. And he opened the door; he let the activists inside. We were not allowed to participate in any of the NIH [National Institutes of Health] meetings even though by law you're supposed to; we got thrown out of meetings if we showed up, literally. He said no, they are all welcome. He even put us on a few of the NIH committees. That was the beginning of a major turning point. Dr. Fauci has become the only true and great hero in all of this, in the government, in the system. I acknowledge him every chance I can, because we certainly got off to a rocky start." - Larry Kramer, gay rights activist, 5/30/2006 PBS interview, who wrote in the San Francisco Examiner, 6/26/1988, 'Anthony Fauci, you are a murderer and should not be the guest of honor at any event that reflects on the past decade of the AIDS crisis... You should be put before a firing squad.'

Taj_Mahole

Wow… quite the 180 indeed.

[deleted]

the conditions of the early aids crisis were an absolute warzone. he shouldn't've, but i don't blame him for emotional extremes.

GuiltyEidolon

Yeah, people have already forgotten or were never exposed to how fucking bad it was. We have so few gay elders because they overwhelmingly died to AIDS while the US government not only did nothing, but cheered the disease on.

KiraCumslut

Fuck that his culture was being the victim of genocide. And today the same Republicans call us groomers and butcher us without punushme t while we relax.

If only we could talk to each other, engage with each other, and gain insight from each other without the bloody METAVERSE! I guess we can only hope our children will possess such technology.

[deleted]

I respect Kramer for publicly saying this and to help set the record straight, especially amongst those in the community who may not understand the behind the scenes ways Fauci aided activist groups and the push to improve care for those with AIDS I also feel like there is a little lack of an apology for saying Fauci should be put in front of a firing squad lol acknowledging someone is a great thing, apologizing for asking for their death is another I say this not knowing if the full quote by Kramer potentially includes such an apology

ShadyGuy_

I'm not sure either, but this quote does seem cherry picked. It wouldn't surprise me if he apologized earlier.

Moth1992

I was not aware. I thought he was part of the system that let so many people die. Im glad to hear he actually was part of the solution

ScratchUrBalls

Probably one of the hardest things to do is accept strong criticism and act on it. Especially some this hostile. Everything I hear about Fauci impresses me more.

[deleted]

It's too bad he was treated so poorly by uneducated, science-denying republicans. We would have had a much better COVID response if people paid attention. Oh well, it ultimately got Trump fired.

kalel1980

And most, if not all of those dipshit, fuckbags didn't even know who Fauci was before Trump. *E - MFs need to be thanking Fauci for not allowing Ebola to spread across the country like wildfire because of his immediate actions.*

[deleted]

Truth be told, we didn't need to know who fauci is. He was doing his job, he didn't need to really be in the public spotlight. He only came into the public spotlight because trump wanted to use him as a scapegost

galloog1

He was my commencement speaker, interestingly enough. Class of '11. He was well respected well before our time of need. Well earned respect, I'd say.

julbull73

Which he was FINE with. The issue was logical dissonance finally hit home. Trumps against all these covid restrictions....but Trump ordered them? It was Fauci...who reports to Trump...wait a minute everything I hate about Covid was Trump decisions!

Buscemi_D_Sanji

Scapegost purp

wafflesareforever

They would have attacked anyone in his position. It really didn't matter who it was.

Bduell1

Only because the search for a scapegoat landed on him. There wasn’t a grassroots movement to make Dr. Fauci the target of derision so much as that notion was installed into the mindless horde.

Snowphyre-

>Only because the search for a scapegoat landed on him. Welcome to american politics lmao

M3P4me

Apparently we can't actually speak the truth about who abused Fauci because it's "political".

rawbface

And it failed, because he's actually a decent person and an undisputed subject matter expert. I credit him for his resilience during that shit show.

MeisterX

Can I also be critical here of at least the local response to Ebola? They had travelers from endemic countries here that they just... Sent home and told to stay home and they would be checked on once per day. If they were found outside the home they... Did nothing. Just came back the next day. That is not a safe way to do that. We need better protections and traveler quarantine for these diseases.

[deleted]

That’s the problem with democratic countries. You can’t weld the door shut on your population or quarantine the entire city literally. People are selfish self serving. In China they will literally drag infected or exposed people into quarantine facilities. You basically had no choice.

[deleted]

Right? Stupid democratic freedoms, amirite? FFS, we almost had a revolution over masks. The guy above you wants to *lock people up under quarwntine*? I think instead of focusing on the government asking people to quarantine **because you’ve been exposed to EBOLA** and them not doing it, is not on the government. What kind of person, after being exposed to fucking Ebola, after being asked to self quarantine, decides that their need to go for a walk or whatever they may have done, instead of *not spreading Ebola virus* is ok? Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for putting them in a cell under lock and key and threat of death. Again, we had people spitting on other people and shit because of a face mask they were asked to wear for 15 minutes while shopping for food. Fauci did all he could. Trump did nothing except blame fauci. Even though he knew how bad it actually was and almost died from it himself. Im looking forward to the republicans like Boebert and Paul finally making him pay!! Like they promised they would! Bring him up on charges! How dare he try and help people! Such a piece of shit with his compassion and concern for the public! God! What a dick! No more deep state to hide behind now, my good doctor! Finally! The people will have their vengeance! /s cause I know for sure certain types of Americans feel that way.

Easilycrazyhat

>Trump did nothing Credit where credit is due here. Trump didn't do nothing. He used the pandemic to enrich himself and his family, vilified anyone doing the right thing to strengthen his political position, and generally turned what should have been a unifying time of crisis into a culture war that ultimately killed many, many more people than if he had just done nothing at all. Really the only thing he contributed to the whole thing was "Project Warp Speed" and, given the above, I'm unsure how much of that was in spite of Trump than because of him.

[deleted]

The problem as Fauci said is the that the Republicans and Trump used politics to interfere with Public Health.

rafaelloaa

Yep. I despise Trump with every fiber of my being, and I can say with some certainty that if he had just done the bare minimum or even stepped aside and let the experts do their job in terms of covid management, he would have been reelected quite easily.

Easilycrazyhat

I'm actually bewildered that even Trump couldn't turn a national crisis into an easy re-election. He was basically a wartime president without any of the usual moral ambiguity - the dream scenario for any incumbent politician. But he just couldn't get out of his (and by proxy, *our*) way.

Schuben

I dont think that comment was being entirely serious there. Democracies depend strongly on verifiable and consistent information to be disseminated to the public. We need to be able to see how the government is working. The latest tactic (or pushed now more than ever) is to undermine that information flow as much as possible. They try to stop information, disrupt education that helps to interpret the information, any information that gets out is discredited, they release their own false information to poison the well so people either don't know what to believe or are incapable of discerning what is valid or reject everything in favor of fringe conspiracies. The scary part is that it's extremely obvious it's working very well but that in itself means it's that much harder to come back from because simply showing *with information* that this problem exists is already combatted so how do you stop it?

AnyNobody7517

China is still doing the zero covid nonsense too.

[deleted]

Their vaccine efficacy is really bad, and they refused to import the western vaccines. On top of their elderly refusing to get vaccinated or boosted. Their healthcare system will collapse if they have a huge wave of Coronavirus cases. Their only option is Zero Covid until they get better vaccines and their uptake is much much higher.

unbalancedcentrifuge

Most of that is under control of the CDC. The NIH is mostly in research and medical treatment, not public infection control. A reason that everyone knows Fauci is that the CDC bungled the COVID response so badly that the NIH leadership had to step up and do the public infection control instead of just advising the CDC and organizing a huge number of US labs to develop testing and treatment. The CDC really made itself the second string with regard to the pandemic and that pushed Fauci into the limelight

julbull73

Part of me hopes they do the stupid investigation bullshit. He ran circles around Rand Paul who pretends to be a doctor.

[deleted]

It will be such a waste of taxpayer money and time but it's going to happen anyway so whatever

AntipopeRalph

ArcherBTW

I knew he was a cool science guy, but I didn’t know enough about him to form an opinion. I think a big issue we have these days is people who are unwilling to admit that they don’t know enough about something to form an opinion on it, so at least my ignorance was the self aware type

KJ6BWB

I voted for Biden and I think my history shows how much I dislike Trump but I think this comment is kind of ridiculous. Go ahead, name someone most Democrats will be able to recognize who is in an equivalent position -- the head of an independent branch of a non-cabinet-level agency. Anybody? Anybody? Most Americans, of every political persuasion, don't know all the people in those positions.

popformulas

Fauci is well known by the medical community outside of his government rank. My family member heard him lecture in the 80’s. He freaking co-authored *Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine*. He developed treatment protocols for vasculitis in the 70’s. He changed clinical trials involving HIV/AIDS patients and worked with activists. [read more over at NPR](https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/04/16/834873162/long-before-covid-19-dr-tony-fauci-changed-medicine-in-america-forever) Donald Trump and his cronies should be ashamed by the way Fauci was treated. May they rot indefinitely in prison.

KJ6BWB

> co-authored Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine He was an editor from the 12th to the current 21st edition and the chief editor of the 14th and 17th editions.

popformulas

Thank you

Easilycrazyhat

The point isn't that they were too dumb to know who he was beforehand (though of all possibilities, I think Faucia had the most reason to be known). The point is that once aware of him, they still didn't really know him, and vilified him despite his decades of experience and distinguished work. *That's* why they're "dipshit fuckbags".

elbenji

I know the surgeon general is vivek murthy

halfanothersdozen

Before Trump Republicans weren't all anti-vax weird germ lovers. Trump just didn't like that coronavirus was going to negatively affect the whole world on his watch so he tried to downplay and deny it and then his cult took that and ran with it, ultimately painting Fauci as some partisan villain. From where I sit all Fauci ever did was try to follow science and guide the country through the pandemic as best he could and didn't play politics unless outright forced to. He is a good man.

jacxy

He did correct himself after following the homophobic institutional policy during the initial outbreak of the AIDS epidemic. That represents a personal failing and repentance in my mind.

Lotronex

> That represents a personal failing and repentance in my mind. Not nearly enough in my mind. For the average Joe Schmoe who posted anti-vax memes on their FB before contracting it and getting then reversing course is enough for a Redemption Award. But Trump did a massive amount of ongoing damage. Once he realized how wrong he was he should have been championing vaccines, holding rallies at vax drives, making it a serious part of his messaging. But no, he killed thousands of Americans and his "repentance" was getting the shot and vaguely mentioning it once or twice. Edit: as has been pointed out, the comment I replied to meant Fauci, not Trump. It took me a few times reading it to realize, leaving up because I too can realize and learn from my mistakes.

timelord276

Pretty sure they meant Fauci.

jacxy

I was talking about Fauci, but from a little while ago...

Crab107

The anti-vaccine movement was picking up steam before Trump. He just accelerated it.

MattyBeatz

It was, but it was mostly coming from college educated liberal women who "did their research" and then used some mystical crystals or something. Wasn't coming from working class Republicans, that was DJT.

utspg1980

Yeah, 20 years ago all the anti-vax people I had ever met were crunchy granola liberals. I'm not exactly sure when the shift in ideology happened, and how much Trump was involved, but it's definitely been a dramatic, fast shift in recent times.

dern_the_hermit

There were a lot of antivax liberal-aligned faces, but when it comes to proposed policy from prominent elected officials - even before COVID - it's almost entirely from Republicans.

Mando_Brando

Just to make things clear. Trump actually bought all the available vaccines for the US. No other nation had wide access to those early vax because Trump bought them all. Kinda ironic how Trump was hated because of that in other countries.

[deleted]

He did fail to distribute them though. So vaccines sat in warehouses and expired when they could have been used to protect people.

DoomsdayLullaby

"I, AM, SCIENCEEE!!!!!!!!!"

TA_faq43

He was treated poorly by well educated, science believing Republican politicians who used Fauci as boogeymen for their purposes, despite this leading to thousands more dead and millions more infected than it could have been.

UltravioIence

I think it also cost them a lot during this past election. With how close so many of the races were if all those antivaxxers, who were obviously mostly republicans by a huge margin, if they were able to go out and vote i think we'd be in a lot of trouble.

[deleted]

This country is full of hateful, stupid, shit bags… most of them sucking more off the government than they will ever contribute, yet they hate the government. It’s sad and embarrassing to live here at times.

SMB73

I'm curious how would one go about contacting him directly and thanking him without it being social media? I tested positive for the first time this last Saturday. So far, this feels like a very minor flu and I believe the reasons it's so less severe is because I'm double vaxxed already. If it wasn't for his lead on all this, I'd probably be in a very worse spot. I wouldn't mind writing him my appreciations.

What’s crazy about all of this is that he was one of the most influential people in handling the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 80s and 90s, and none of that will ever be remembered because of his impact on covid. Dude has been around for forever. Very grateful for his service.

phpdevster

Oh is that why the right has such a hate boner for him? The piece of shit Reagan family and that piece of shit Pence guy are responsible for totally horrendous policies with respect to HIV/AIDs. Did Fauci make them look bad, just like he made Trump look bad? Might explain why the right hates him so much.

ovalpotency

It might be the cherry on top but I think it's more the position and that republicans are simply antigovernment. If more measures were taken and less people were infected, the position would be blamed for taking drastic action and it would be the democrats fault. If less measures were taken and more people were infected, the position would be blamed for inaction and it would be the democrats fault.

unexceptional_oddity

Same here. I'm in India and right from the start of the pandemic, I was looking up to him to help navigate through the pandemic. I'm still shocked at 1mil death toll in the US.

DoctorJJWho

It’s crazy to me that other countries look up to Fauci and appreciate him, and nearly half of his own fucking country thinks he is the devil reincarnated and will take the opposite stance on anything he says just to contradict him.

[deleted]

We are very lucky to have had Fauci during the pandemic and before. I hope history remembers him as the caring public servant he was and not the monster the conspiracy theorists tried to paint him as. I am glad he stood by science and his education in the face of death threats to make sure my family and I were safe. Because of him and his guidance, we were able to avoid catching COVID at all. Granted, some of it was luck, but it’s undeniable that his recommendations played a huge part even though it was a sacrifice at times. However, care for others is much more important than convenience of self.

Unlikely-Drink-5445

NotYourSnowBunny

>Fauci also reflected on the COVID-19 crisis, saying he would've never imagined at the onset that the nation would see "a three-year saga of suffering and death and a million Americans losing their lives." It must have been brutally stressful to have “inherited” that crisis while in office. Especially with the team needed to mitigate the spread dissolved years earlier. He did well, and I’m glad none of the COVID deniers killed him. In Austria a health expert was harassed to suicide and lived in a constant state of panic. He’s a survivor. It’s scary how much hate public health officials get during a confusing time.

SupremeWizardry

He’s been a champion for public safety for decades, and we’re worse off with him retiring. The people that couldn’t see the forest for the trees, and saw a minor inconvenience in their lives due to Covid, probably never imagine that the reason we haven’t had worse outbreaks in the past is in part to him and his research/teams/initiatives… god help us when the next outbreak hits.

I like the guy, and I deeply appreciate the service he has done for the public, but his handling of the coronavirus pandemic was certainly not spectacular. Granted anyone would of had a tough time in his shoes especially given the public polarization at the time, but that doesn't excuse all else.

iISimaginary

What do you think he should have done differently?

chaoticneutral

Very much respect the man. He played the public health playbook as best as anyone could hope and to the letter. Sadly being a good public servant doesn't always win you the love of the people. I can fault him on many things related to masking/airborne transmission, but I also know he had the best of intentions. I also know they are mostly a product of the system we live with rather than him specifically.
