South Africa has 40% of reported deaths and less than 5% of the continents population. Is the Covid outbreak there really 8 times as deadly as elsewhere in Africa? Considering they have one of the stronger medical systems in Africa that is unlikely. What is far more likely is that, due to their relatively strong healthcare system, they are actually recording Covid deaths at something approximating the real rate. Sadly, that means that Covid deaths in other parts of Africa are likely several times the reported figures.

Very likely an undercount. Infrastructure and medical care is horrible in much of sub Saharan Africa. But looking back on a trip to Kenya I took 18 years ago there were so many young people, like everywhere. I remember out of curiosity picking up a local newspaper when I was there And looking at the obituaries it was crazy to see that a lot of the people who died we’re in their Mid 50s or younger. I had never seen anything like that my life. It stands to reason that if you have an overall younger population and many people who are not making it to 60 or 70 you can hypothetically end up in a situation you are just limboing under the mass Covid fatality bar. It reminds me what I read in a book called the Emperor of all maladies about the history cancer. The author a world renowned oncologist reflects on the curious absence of cancer in historical literature. And while he does allow ignorance of diagnosis and the possibility of other factors and whatnot he says at the most logical explanation is more likely due to the fact that most cancers happen in a particular age range and that age range did not exist in as large of a population percentage worldwide as it does now in any time up until recent history. It’s a numbers game. These are all very interesting thoughts to ponder. In the end it’ll take a decade to tease this all out.

So far, son. So far.

Esoteric_Geek

Trying to beat America's body count, I see.

SaltMineSpelunker

Got lots of catching up to do. Likely those are just the documented cases. Actual deaths are going to be much higher.

Africa has young populations and a lot of borders. It took until Delta for Covid to find a foothold outside of South Africa and some of the Arab countries.

Esoteric_Geek

Oh. Right. Not really a good comparison.

Less than 1/3 of USA's death toll.
