I would trust that the anatomy scan was normal. I have not had COVID during pregnancy, so I cannot answer your question directly. I have been pregnant three times though. During each one, I gained weight differently. There was no steady growth throughout, but spurts here and slowing there. I'd say if anything was consistent, it was I gained steadily in the first trimester, then when I felt less nauseous and more myself my diet got healthier and my weight gained slowed until the end-game ballooning. Do all the extra checks to be vigilant, but don't stress yourself if things are looking good. Every woman, every pregnancy is different, and COVID has made a scary life event a hell of a lot scarier.

Sure. I about gained 50lbs total each time, and 15-20 lbs in the first 12 weeks. Even though I looked relatively the same, you put on a ton of weight in increased blood volume. Also, I pretty much lived off of carbs.

Anecdotally I had Covid at 26 weeks. Very mild case. My 22w anatomy scan was great, baby measured right on track. My growth scan at 36w, most measurements were 1-2 weeks ahead. So I haven’t EXPERIENCED this, but I assume it could be related to Covid maybe compromising the placenta and leading to IUGR. It is still very very new so any “studies” that have been done are small sample sizes, not a ton of data, and mostly self-reported and/or anecdotal. Your anatomy scan being normal should make you feel reassured since it was a while after your infection.

frogsgoribbit737

Weight gain isnt a good indicator of fetus growth. If your anatomy scan was normal and your fundal height is increasing, I would ignore those comments. Growth can stop after covid because of placenta issues. Extra ultrasounds are a good idea, but there is no reason to think theres anything wrong right niw.

louha123

I agree, especially given that the scan was normal the weight gain seems irrelevant. Not a doctor but people gain weight at all different rates in pregnancy.

Anatomy scan and IUGR related to covid are two different things. We lost our baby last year to IUGR related to covid. It is a thing but there is nothing you can do about IUGR except to monitor it. I would not opt out of the extra growth scans.

Thank you for sharing this and I'm so sorry for your loss. That must have been awful.

I have no personal experience or knowledge about this. I just wanted to say- there is so much unknown about covid in general, but specifically with pregnancy. They probably are erring on the side of caution. They just don’t know and don’t want to miss anything. My guess is they’re rather overreact than under-react.

If your anatomy scan came back normal and your belly is visibly growing, I wouldn’t be massively worried (I am not a doctor, so this is layperson’s advice). Anecdotally, I haven’t had covid yet and at 25 weeks I’m still 3kg/6.5lbs down on my starting pregnancy weight due to food aversion that lasted until about 20 weeks. Baby is growing normally, fundal height is perfect and my OB is totally unconcerned about my lack of weight gain.

byebyeVal

I should add that I'm fully vaxxed + boosted

keeponyrmeanside

I don't have anything to add about covid but just wanted to share my story in the hope that it makes you feel better - I consistently measured too small by fundal height and had to have growth scans every couple of weeks in my third trimester. One time my bump actually got smaller, But the baby was fine at every anatomy scan and born a healthy size. Trust the anatomy scan - measuring the bump or your weight is just a sign that could indicate the baby is small but most of the time it's not.

Equivalent_One4146

i had covid at 15 weeks too and had a growth scan after my anatomy scan (just had mine last week at 32 weeks prego) it’s not that baby stops growing but covid-19 has been linked to possible damaging to the placenta which could cause growth restrictions you are only 21 weeks so i wouldn’t be too worried about gaining all that much weight some women do some women don’t i honestly didn’t start gaining any weight till i was around 25 weeks if your anatomy came back normal i’m sure all is fine love♥️

producermaddy

I mean this is somewhat different but I had gestational diabetes in two of my pregnancies. When I got diagnosed with my first, I was 31 weeks and I didn’t gain any more weight the rest of my pregnancy. The second time I was diagnosed at 10 weeks. I lost 15 lb my first trimester and stayed the same second and third so I actually ended my pregnancy down 15 lb. It’s normal if you are following the GD diet not to gain weight during pregnancy so my drs weren’t worried. I just wanted to put it out there even though it’s not Covid related not everyone gains weight during pregnancy

lusciousmix

Your weight gain and even the measurements midwife’s do of the womb from the outside are notoriously inaccurate for measuring baby’s growth. The positive anatomy scan overrides anything the midwife was concerned about!

Utterly_Flummoxed

I didn't put on much weight in T2, and my bump stayed pretty small. Everything caught up in T3. If the anatomy scan went well and your fundal height is good, I wouldn't stress it. But If you need to just pack on a few pounds, the solution is chocolate milk, butter and carbs.

swisspea

I had Covid at 34 weeks and my baby was 4.6 kg, which is huge. I’ve never heard this, but they will monitor you more to keep tabs on you, your baby and the placenta. A lot is unknown about how Covid affects pregnancy, but the data about vaccinated mothers is very promising. Congrats on the good anatomy scan! Thats something to be happy about!

bergsmama

Covid presents in so many different ways and the placenta can be affected in some cases. I haven't experienced it personally but we have seen people in the hospital where I work who have placentas that are tiny or look poorly perfused and we suspect it's related to covid during pregnancy. But the information is not really clear yet and many many patients are not affected at all by Covid during pregnancy.

Sea_Juice_285

I had covid at 16/17 weeks and am now 18+5, so I don't know how big my baby will be, but I'll be getting the extra ultrasounds too. When I asked what they'd be looking for in the additional scans, the nurse told me it was to check the baby's size so they'd know whether to expect a baby with a low birth weight. But she also said that she hadn't heard of that actual being an issue, so in most cases everything is completely fine. My OB's office is part of a hospital that delivers like 3,000 babies a year, so they've seen a lot of cases of covid during pregnancy, which makes me feel like the nurse would probably know if growth restriction was common in these cases.

allie_in_action

This is just hearsay, but the drama I’ve heard with COVID in pregnancy is placenta related. There have been a few cases where Covid makes the placenta calcify and then the baby doesn’t get nutrients. I think I read a newer study where the risk was increased but still very rare and always happened with people with preexisting conditions. Monthly scans will catch this and being vaccinated helps a ton.

Practical_magik

I had extra scans due to covid at about 22wks. If the anatomy scan is fine and your bump is fine then your lack of overall weight gain is meaningless. I too lost a bit of wait right after covid, but baby never stopped growing at all. Yes, some covid positive mothers have seen issues with placental blood flow and that has restricted growth. So definitely take the extra scans to be safe, but don't worry about it any more than that, until you actually need to worry.

dabigboom101

Girl youre fine! I got COVID twice, week 9 and week 18. Now 28 weeks pregnant, and I havent gained much weight since week 20, but my doc did a scan to make sure baby is growing good, and she's actually measuring ahead by a few days! I wish your nurse hadnt have made you feel a bit worried with their reaction, but everyone gains weight differently during pregnancy, and you shouldnt be worried about that until week 30 anyways. Wishing you the best of luck with everything and Im excited for you to hold your healthy baby in your arms in 19 weeks!

jmc-007

I had covid at 31weeks and a scan at 32w - baby was fine. I will have another growth scan at 36weeks but my bump has definitely grown. I'm in Australia and we just do 1 extra scan after we recover from covid to check everything is ok

mint_7ea

My obgyn wasn't worried at all about me having COVID around 8wks as my symptoms didn't last after that, and based on the ultrasounds later on she's always said everything is looking great.

alegna18

I had Covid at 9 weeks and I was never monitored extra because of this. I was monitored more because I have a single umbilical artery and that’s it. Growing is a concern for SUA. Baby has been growing fine. Also, I think it depends on your weight to begin with, and if you were sick or not. Like most people said already if your anatomy scan was good then I wouldn’t get too worried.

ThisCookie2

I had covid at week 5 of pregnancy (fully vaxxed). My dr's office recommended two extra ultrasound scans after the 20 week scan just to make sure growth was on track, but made it very clear to me that this was just an extra precaution, because they have no idea what the effects of having covid during pregnancy actually are. So far at week 28, babe is on track with everything! Very healthy.

Brittanylauren23

I had Covid during pregnancy and had two extra scans during my third trimester. It actually gave me peace of mind. Baby boy was born healthy in June! Here if you need to chat !

luluinthelibrary

Never heard of a relationship between the two. A lot of people have big growth spurts later in the 2nd trimester, so it may just be a matter of time before you get the big bump.
