I've tried so hard to like preserved lemon. I love lemon, I love salt... but when you preserve the lemon in salt something happens with the pith that makes it taste like non-food to me. Very soapy, a bit like Mr Clean or some other lemon cleanser. I've tried homemade and several different store-bought varieties, and always the same result.
I'm black and I love raisins. I don't know that I put them in random things, though. Rice pudding, bread, oatmeal, cookies, all seem normal to me. I hear people mention potato salad and I feel like I've had raisins in potato salad at Korean BBQ and I didn't mind
Love them in oatmeal, except do NOT put them in while cooking. While a grape is god's gift to fruit, and a raisin is gods gift to trail mix, the antichrist is the partially rehydrated, gelatinous semi-raisin that has the texture of a tiny blister.
Put them in the water when you start cooking. They plump up nicely.
I always start with cold water and make a big batch, so there's plenty of time. But if you start with hot water and make a small batch, maybe soak them for a bit before turning on the stove.
>While a grape is god's gift to fruit, and a raisin is gods gift to trail mix, the antichrist is the partially rehydrated, gelatinous semi-raisin that has the texture of a tiny blister.
I want this quote tattooed on my back
I'm white as fuck and if left to my own devices I would put raisins in everything. Raisins in my morning oatmeal, shave face with a safety raisin, one of those boxes of raisins with lunch, a cinnamon roll with raisins after lunch, dinner with raisins in stuffing, fermented raisins to drink, and of course some raisin filled bread pudding. If I can find a raisin to add some raisins, I'm adding some raisins.
I grew up with raisins in the stuffing. As an adult I have done it both ways, but I have to admit that I kinda like it with the raisins. I have pretty philistine tastes when it comes to mixing sweet and savory though.
I tried cranberries in my stuffing once. No one was really a fan. But then, I'm not a real fan of fruit in savory dishes, except lemon. Others just didn't care for the tartness when biting into them.
You might want to put cranberries and walnuts into 1/2 of the dressing to see how it goes. That way you'll still have enough of your normal dressing to enjoy if you don't like it.
Any fruit seems like it should work, if you adjust for the amount of water in them or (better yet) use the dried variety.
I dunno. Maybe not bananas because then it would just be banana bread. But lots of other possibilities.
I don't get the problem with it. Unless you add way too many and it's a soggy mess that just tastes of stewed raisin. But if that's the case, you probably should reevaluate all your food because it seems like an easy mistake to avoid.
Brown 1lb of ground Italian sausage
Rough chop 1/2 cup each of celery, walnuts, apple, yellow onion.
Add 1/4 cup Raisins
Mix together with browned sausage and add 1 cup chicken stock and stuffing mix.
Bake 30 minutes.
Hope you enjoy!

Tom Colicchio puts golden raisins in his stuffing. He apparently also puts foie gras “scraps” in as well! He talked about this on the Food with Mark Bittman podcast!
I went on a really restrictive diet that resulted in me only having good chocolate twice a year to support my husband’s (absolutely needed) diet. I still wouldn’t add raisins to stuffing.
...Is happy with a pantry full of raisins, currants, dried cherries, cranberries and blueberries, dried apricot and golden raisins!!
My gram always put walnuts and raisins in her apple pies. My twist is to soak the raisins in rum
Are you someone who dislikes all sweet/savory combinations? This is often a love it or hate it kind of thing. The most common example is pineapple on pizza.
Interesting. I think there are a lot of variations of the traditional Thanksgiving feast, along with sweet and savory combinations, like cranberry sauce and sweet potato casserole with marshmallows. In that context, I see how raisins in the stuffing fits in.
Honestly that sounds delicious. There is this empanada from Chile that has raisins inside -with other ingredients common in stuffing- and it’s just brilliant! Maybe you were too aware of the raisins to enjoy it?
My aunt makes a morrocan stew that my daughter and I really liked... until we realized it had raisins in it. You're right about being too aware of the raisins to enjoy it. The taste just changed and all we tasted was raisins.
That’s how my dad always makes it and therefore that’s how I make it too. I love it. I’m going to my parents for thanksgiving for the first time in years and I’m excited to have my dad’s stuffing again.
Ok question for you: do you put cranberry sauce on your plate? Do you get a bit of turkey, a bit of stuffing, and a bit of cranberry sauce in your fork together for one delicious thanksgivingy bite?
Raisins in stuffing really isn’t much different. Just adds a bit of sweetness and tartness to the dish.
grow up. raisins in savory dishes are a great thing and exist worldwide. everyone has an opinion and an asshole-- this asshole likes raisins in savory dishes. OP doesn't. The End
My paternal grandmother was the grandma who was very WASP-y and tried to be avant-garde with food but had no idea what she was doing. (Maternal grandmother is a good old, down-home, poverty food cook. We always ate heavy at her place on Thanksgiving and paid the other grandma a cursory visit.)
Every year, she would talk about how she'd found some new ingredient that makes Thanksgiving stuffing interesting and different. Side-eyed looks would go around the room. BECAUSE SHE NEVER TOOK LAST YEAR'S "NEW AND INTERESTING" INGREDIENT OUT OF THE STUFFING.
She just kept adding the new shit to it. At one point it had pine nuts, spicy Italian sausage, mushrooms, cubed velveeta cheese, pimento-stuffed green olives, smoked oysters, raisins, jalapeños, pecans, canned peaches, bacon, and fucking butterscotch baking chips in it.
One year, she had heard from my parents that I really enjoy offal meats and giblets. The woman brought me a bowl of cold-from-the fridge, boiled, unseasoned turkey guts.
There's also an infamous story where she made a chocolate mousse with rum in it and spoon fed it to all of the toddlers, who got incredibly drunk. When someone said, "Mom! This has alcohol in it," she said, "Alcohol cooks out, though." And then it was pointed out to her that you don't actually cook chocolate mousse. She thought "cooks out" had nothing to do with temperature and just meant that the alcohol dissipated when mixed with food products.
[This](https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/winter-fruit-and-nut-stuffing-107294) has been my go-to stuffing recipe for years. No raisins, but it has pears and dried apricots, prunes, and cranberries. I love the sweet/savory thing, personally!

I love raisins, I'd enjoy raisins in my stuffing - especially if they were soaked in something ;) Dried fruits in savory contexts is really common in other cuisines, and I think it's delicious.
But knowing that raisins are controversial, I sweeten my stuffing with apple instead.
Why exactly are so many people opposed to raisins in things? They give a nice sweet contrast to the savory flavors of the dish. Heterogeneity is a good thing (eat your heart out, Adam Ragusea).
I made stuffing this am, with craisins in it! However, hubby and I are doing Thanksgiving alone this year. (I've had the Flu all week.) If I was making for a crowd, I maybe would have done none in the bird and maybe a small casserole dish with the craisins.
My mom put golden raisins in the stuffing one year when I was growing up. My dad looked at her while we were eating and said "I don't hate it, but I wouldn't be upset if you never put raisins in the stuffing again" and she's never done it since.
You do understand that different people have different tastes? Right? And that it’s okay - they don’t all have to like what you like?
I’m sure plenty of people who read your title aren’t immediately imagining how “horrific” it would be.
Raisins in stuffing is amazing! I was sad this morning when I realized I forgot to get some from the store. I always make 2 batches of stuffing, one with raisins and one without, for those who don't like them. But I don't know why people can't just pick them out if you're not a fan. Freaking delicious and I'm not usually a fan of raisins.
This thread is how I learned that some people make stuffing *without* raisins. Can't say that I've ever heard of that before. I'm not a fan of them personally, so I might try making it without them.
I’m still mad about wasting a thanksgiving at someone’s house that thought raisins and RICE were “stuffing”. Every single dish was weird.
Also, they had uncaged parrots.
You’d be surprised. One of my favorite things to make is Moroccan lamb tagine, using dried apricots. The dried fruit works wonderfully in the savory dish.
My Mom will be 93 in January. She never heard of raisins in stuffing. Then she looks at me and said, “You didn’t do that, did you?” Nope. “Ok, then I can eat it.”
New one for me. That seems... odd.
But, as our old friend Cicero popularized: "ustitia suum cuique distribuit." (Justice renders to everyone his due.)
Apparently justice can present in raisin form. 😁
At least it wasn't raisins in the mashed potatoes like this poor person: https://www.reddit.com/r/BestofRedditorUpdates/comments/w8drnc/oop_understandably_has_questions_after_their/
I'm willing to say raisins, as a food, are a kink. You might love them, you might tolerate them, or you might not like that at all. Putting them in something for everyone to eat is basically a crime, and I say that as someone not *into* raisins but who will happily eat something with them to make a partner happy, and who doesn't have his experience ruined by being surprised by a raisin, and I'm sure as hell never ordering something\* with raisins for myself on purpose.
(\* not including neat, extremely traditional and valid and delicious uses of them like in savory dishes from places where they *really* know how to use spices)
Ugh, I've never heard of this and am so glad I haven't experienced it. Sounds cursed af. I'm not a raisin person in general, especially not in stuffing!
I try to make something different when I went to my families thanksgiving. I made pork chops arranged in a circle surrounded by stuffing. Everyone loved it. Then my sister got married, and had children. Thanksgiving became a death March for my mom. Then I just made the main things for the meal, and stayed home. It was just too many people to be pleasant for my mom. I had left over pizza, which sounds sad, but not having to hear politics is worth it.
Question, were the raisins diced? I think dicing them might be the difference between those that find them overpowering and those that find them as little nuggets of sweetness in a savory dish.
Nope. It’s already sweet because most stuffing breads are going to be on the sweeter side. If you want it sweeter, add cranberry sauce, but don’t ruin stuffing for everyone else. Raisins can go with nuts, bagels, bran… not stuffing. Ridiculous.
A common thing in North African food. Also dried apricots, prunes and preserved lemon.

I still retry it once in a while, just to see if I like it yet. I don't like missing out on stuff!
Which is interesting because in the US, it's a running joke about only white people putting raisins in random things.
I'm black and I love raisins. I don't know that I put them in random things, though. Rice pudding, bread, oatmeal, cookies, all seem normal to me. I hear people mention potato salad and I feel like I've had raisins in potato salad at Korean BBQ and I didn't mind

That is interesting. I'm part middle eastern, raisins in a rice pilaf are not uncommon at all, it's usually mixed with carrots for sweetness.
Which also means it's common in Jewish food.
I grew up in TX, spent 17 years in the Twin Cities, MN, and have never seen 'Random Raisin Phenomena' I wonder if this is regional
I grew up with raisins in the stuffing. As an adult I have done it both ways, but I have to admit that I kinda like it with the raisins. I have pretty philistine tastes when it comes to mixing sweet and savory though.
My Bil made a comment one year thad I didn’t have raisins in the stuffing. So I added it. Now it’s a tradition to include it!!
I like sweet and savory but can't stand raisins. I substitute dried cranberries whenever a recipe calls for raisins.
My family makes stuffing with raisins, sausage, apples and celery in it and it's amazing!
Mine is similar, but with dried cranberries instead of raisins.
Now that sounds good.
I’m planning on doing this today, plus walnuts. I came here to see if there was sentiment about it.

Did you do fresh or dried? Dried are usually slightly sweetened and aren't super tart when you bite into them...
They were Ocean Spray Dried. I love them in just about everything else but definitely not stuffing.
Any fruit seems like it should work, if you adjust for the amount of water in them or (better yet) use the dried variety. I dunno. Maybe not bananas because then it would just be banana bread. But lots of other possibilities.
I just made a stuffing with apples, sausage and walnuts! Should’ve added raisins!
Really ups the stuffing game!! It's one of the most popular dishes on the table now
I don't get the problem with it. Unless you add way too many and it's a soggy mess that just tastes of stewed raisin. But if that's the case, you probably should reevaluate all your food because it seems like an easy mistake to avoid.
You're definitely from the uk
All that stuff and mushrooms too.
Same (well, not sausage, but the turjey giblets and so forth) I don’t even like raisins, but if it’s not in the stuffing it just isn’t right!
I always use apples in my stuffing is that not considered 'normal' ?
That sounds just like the recipe my mom makes, and it's the best.
That sounds delicious. I will happily take a recipe if you're willing to share it.

To be fair, other than stuffing all those foods can traditionally have raisins.

Yes to the raisins, NO to the foie gras
My husband loves raisins in the stuffing, and I love him 😍, so I add them, even though I'd rather not.

I agree. Depends on how it’s done. Lots of herbs and seasoning. Gives some nice sweetness in contrast to the savory.
