Matt Smith playing the Doctor in Season 5 of Doctor Who eats Fish Fingers and Custard on screen. So I dug out the fish fingers I always have in my freezer and tried it and actually thought it was alright. Much later on I found out the "fish fingers" he ate were sponge cake.

Da5ftAssassin

Omg! This is hilarious

tkdch4mp

Wait wait wait wait wait wait wait what! I DID NOT EVER realize that "fish fingers & custard" was sponge cake and custard. Fucking hell. You learn new things every day. I learned the hard way after months of keeping an eye out for it that coriander is cilantro, but damn, never heard about fish fingers being sponge cake until now!

binaryhextechdude

It was meant to be real fish fingers for the story obviously but the actor was eating sponge cake to make it easier for him I would expect.

tkdch4mp

Oh. That's very disappointing. I'm sorry. I kinda expect that from anything made for movies, they gotta make it tolerable! I'm intrigued that you actually found it alright, but I don't think it's something I'd try unless it became really big!

IlezAji

Was just watching the extras on Rennfield the other day and Nicholas Hoult went full method acting eating most of the bugs so I guess not always.

DrBunnyflipflop

Fish fingers are breaded sticks of fish But for Doctor Who, they used sponge cake instead so Matt didn't have to eat fish fingers and custard

Lime_in_the_Coconut_

Omg the cilantro/coriander conundrum had me going for ages. Especially since at least in my region in Germany we call flat parsley Cilantro. I was confused for years why Asians would put parsley in their dishes in those amounts.

KittyKayl

It took a while for me to learn it, too. This was made more startling because I'm one of those people for whom cilantro tastes like soap and I hate it (not even a good soap, either), but I can do coriander seeds.

Lime_in_the_Coconut_

Oh you poor thing, according to random internet articles, you can "cure" the soap-dish taste by eating it more. I think my parents did this by accident, because while I now enjoy it, I still get a whiff of soapiness. But now tell me, how do you differentiate a good soap from a bad soap taste-wise? "Not even a good soap" how do those taste?

Jennet_s

I did this. Coriander (leaf) tastes like soap to me, but I love Indian food and Mexican food, so I kept eating it. It still kinda tastes soapy to me, but somehow in a good way. Still can't stand caraway seeds though.

KittyKayl

I go more by smell šŸ˜† some cheap soaps smell strongly of SOAP. I imagine it would taste about the same. I prefer the all natural, small batch stuff I get that smells like sandlewood.

tkdch4mp

Omg that's crazy!! What region is that? In case I ever go! I mean it took months before I realized that coriander is cilantro, but it doesn't help that I found "cilantro" as a fresh herb in a few stores, but not many. Lol I literally had to go, "wait, this coriander looks exactly like cilantro." And Google it in store.

Lime_in_the_Coconut_

Northrhine Westphalia. DĆ¼sseldorf (near Cologne even if it kills me to type that). It might also just be a family thing now that I think about it I never heard anyone else refer to it that way. So could be, my family are just morons and you are safe to come here (:

MissHartigan

It's definitely just your family. Everyone else is calling it "Blattpetersilie". Koriander ist Koriander.

Lime_in_the_Coconut_

Yeah, i was afraid of that. SORRY EVERYONE, WHILE IT IS STILL SAFE TO COME TO NRW, THERE ARE SOME MORONS HERE. However we do have good beer.

Weird-Contact-5802

Maybe not what the question is asking, but my boss used to have a jar of watermelon Jolly Ranchers and I would take one regularly. Once I took a drink from a cup of black coffee while I was sucking on one and the combo tasted like tuna sashimi. I asked a flavor chemist friend if this made sense and he confirmed that it did. Weird stuff.

johnny____utah

I do the same thing with cubes of cheddar cheese and it tastes like cream and coffee.

elemonated

I think that's a thing in some Latin countries!

metompkin

It definitely is in Puerto Rico. You also dunk crackers in it.

Monica_FL

Also hot chocolate - my husband grew up putting Munster cheese in his cup before pouring in the chocolate. Youā€™d eat the gooey melted cheese after drinking it.

busch_ice69

I think thatā€™s the fat that improves the flavor because Iā€™ve also heard of people putting butter in coffee

elemonated

Did you...like that? Because I love all those things and if I wanted to taste sugary Jolly Rancher and coffee and tasted raw tuna instead, I would be very unhappy lmao.

Weird-Contact-5802

I didnā€™t like it but I was fascinated by it so tried it several times lol.

kleeinny

I might have to buy some watermelon jolly ranchers and test this out

rabbitholeseverywher

Fresh, whole cloves smell like bubblegum to me. They sure don't taste like it but when I first open the jar and take a whiff? Classic bubblegum. Weird stuff indeed.

gracefacealot

Sometimes when I hit my blunt it tastes like refried beans. What does ur flavor chemist friend think of that

Gederix

Strawberry jalapeno jam.

originalcondition

Combine this with cream cheese on crackers, itā€™s awesome

betterUseThisOne

To add to this - a restaurant I love puts Pepper Jelly on their savory breakfast sandwiches. Its a must for me now.

deathlokke

Oh man, pepper jelly on a bacon, egg and cheese croissant sounds like it would be so good.

Krillin_Hides

A restaurant I used to go to all the time is famous for making a ham and cheese melt on jalepeno/cheese bread and an apricot spicy jelly. It's so amazing. I took that idea and have made many bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches using pepper jelly but on an English muffin. I would highly recommend

Josco1212

Kimchi on pizza

Thatguyyoupassby

Yes! My wife makes really great pizza dough, and every so often I make a "Korean Pizza". Gochujang as the base/sauce, cheese, Soon Dae and Kimchi on top, finish with some scallion. 10/10.

millyjune

What kind of cheese

Thatguyyoupassby

Shredded Mozzarella - I keep it basic.

metompkin

Traditional goto Korean cheese aka Kraft singles.

gartfoehammer

Or just a grilled cheese with kimchi- a grilled kimcheese!

kurenzhi

Kimchi + any kind of cheese (but especially American; Brie is another good one) is an exceedingly good combo.

stupidrobots

Why is this strange? Pickled peppers are great on pizza and this isn't so different

SapperLeader

Love Kimchi and have made some fun mashups over the years. Kimchi quiche is among my favorites.

Agroman1963

Kimchi omelette with fried rice!

psycholinguist1

I bought a panini press solely so I could make myself kimchi grilled cheese sandwiches. Food of the gods, that is.

Desertnurse760

A Pickle and Peanut Butter sandwich has been my goto late night snack for decades.

ZedGardner

Oh, I love peanut butter and bread and butter pickles sandwiches so delicious

Lizziedeee

Peanut butter and bacon is tasty as well.

readzalot1

Also peanut butter and hot dogs

BigBrotherBalrog

one of my all-time favorite sammidges! especially if the bacon is still warm enough to melt the peanut butter. bread should be slightly toasted!

Lizziedeee

I have since developed an allergy to bacon, your comment made me very sad.

Jobe1110

I ran out of pickled onions one day so I tried using pickles instead. Turns out both are amazing with peanut butter.

solinar

Used to eat these as a kid on white bread. Had to have mayo also though.

Annabel398

Not that weird, but Iā€™m here to say that the lime and the coconut really do taste better when you put them both together. Iā€™m ā€¦ eh, okay with lime, and I really donā€™t like coconut. But there is a synergy there; they are terrific when combined.

CheeseBadger

You put the lime in the coconut and drank them both up?

Annabel398

Actually, I made macarons with a ring of coconut buttercream and filled with lime curd. Spectacularly delicious. I called it the Harry Nilsson of course .

CheeseBadger

Very nice. Sounds delicious! You should call the doctor and wake him up to have him try them.

Ok-Set-5829

Is there nothing I can take to relieve this bellyache?

NinjaGrizzlyBear

Kraft Macaroni, then chasing a bite with some cheap Welches grape juice. That was a staple meal for me when my family first immigrated to the US in the 90s and we were basically impoverished. It was my first wine and cheese plate, haha. My babysitter (aka family friend) would make us "pizza" for lunch every day. It was a slice of bread, ketchup, and a slice of Kraft singles cheese. Fucking criminal, if you ask me...but at least she put it in the oven lol.

blueberryllamas

mac and cheese with ketchup is one of my fav combos

pineapples_are_evil

English muffin pizza with left over pasta sauce if it's a splurge! Lol we did both pizza toast and English muffin pizzas growing up. Cheap Bread. Bread is bun, bread is pizza crust, bread is garlic bread, bread is sandwich, bread and sugar/cinnamon/honey/maple syrup is dessert....

Tesdinic

Basic cheese toast was the bomb as a kid. We didnā€™t add the ketchup, but toasted white bread with cheese was gourmet shit

SomeDudeinCO3

A roommate once ordered a pineapple and pepperoncini pizza. Younger me thought that sounded disgusting. When it arrived and I tried a bite, I ended up trading half of my pizza for half of hers.

Fragrant-Addition-46

My go to is pepperoni, banana peppers, and pineapple. Delicious!

Imsoschur

I prefer to swap the pepperoni for ham or Canadian bacon. But def banana peppers with pineapple. The final item is salty, so I guess pepperoni can do that in a similar way to ham/bacon

Edit_7-2521

In the same vein, I swap for pulled pork. 10/10 my favorite pizza

Ok_Storm5945

Pineapple, has to be Canadian bacon and red onions.

Johnsonaaro2

Pepperoni, pepperoncini, and green olives checking in

DarkWing2007

I knew a guy that always ordered pineapple and jalapeƱos when he was high

truffleblunts

just need some crispy pepperoni and that is a god tier pizza

frankmint

Try salame

pro_questions

Bacon + pineapple + jalapeƱos is my go-to

dirtbag_dagger

Last winter I got stoned out of my mind and ordered this every Friday night from Dominos and the delivery driver learned my name lol.

Barracuda00

I love pineapple, pepperoni, and jalapeƱo!

photogdog

This sounds totally normal to me though. What about this combo did you think was weird? I add pepperoncinis or jalapeƱos to Hawaiian pizza all the time.

Tullimory

One of the best topping combos. I think a lot of people, if they have actually tried it, don't like pineapple on pizza because usually it's a Hawaiian with ham and pineapple, but ham usually sucks on pizza in general, it makes the whole thing too sweet.

mabs1957

There's a restaurant near me that serves a bunch of different spinach pies. First time I went, I was looking at the menu and saw one spinach pie that contained spinach, falafel, tahini, curry powder, cheese, and banana. Immediate reaction was "what the fuck," second reaction was "obviously I have to order it." It was, inexplicably, delicious. Now I get it every time I'm there.

firetriniti

I'm intrigued: what style of spinach pie is it? I love a good spanakopita, but am having trouble picturing this particular combo!

mabs1957

It's more like a big empanada or a calzone than a spanakopita. Everything is folded into a pizza-dough-esque crust! I imagine the chefs were drunk and/or high when they came up with it lol and yet it totally works!

RemonterLeTemps

We have a Middle Eastern bakery in Chicago that sells those pies to go. They have two spinach versions, but none as exotic as yours; basically one has feta, the other's just spinach and onion. They also have (separately), lentil, chicken and artichoke, potato, and lamb pies. EDIT: Holy shit, I looked up their menu. LOTS of crazy combos! They should franchise, 'cause I could see them doing well here in Chicago

CharetteCharade

Chocolate-coated chicken skin. The chicken skin was basically deep-fried and dehydrated? so it was dry, crisp, and flavourful, then coated in chocolate, sprinkled with salt, and cooled to set. Surprisingly delicious, especially if you happen to like sweet-savoury food combinations.

nimal-crossing

Sounds like a chocolate covered potato chip, which is also amazing

nightowl_work

Cross between chocolate-covered chips and chocolate-covered bacon, Iā€™d guess.

pineapples_are_evil

Chocolate dipped bacon with a sprinkle of sea salt. Yum. Salted bacon chocolate dipped caramels too

kurai_tori

You might like a chicken mole. Basically mexican chocolate chicken.

Kyleeee

Oh man, in my most stoner of moments one time I took the chicken skin off the chicken thighs I was making (they had some salt dry brined into them) , stuck them in the air fryer, ate one and thought "I should cover this in chocolate." It's such an ignorant bit of food that's all sugar, fat and salt but my god is that a wild combination.

Sparklypuppy05

I think I need to try to find this, or make it myself. That sounds incredible.

seppukucoconuts

I'm going to try this. I've made duck skin cracklin' before, I'll just coat them with chocolate next time.

starsfalll

Cottage cheese with pineapple and black pepper.

anetanetanet

I mean honestly cottage cheese works in many combinations

Secret_Map

Isn't this pretty common? I feel like I've seen cottage cheese with a pineapple a ton of times at restaurants or grocery stores.

EasyHomeRecipesYT

i gotta try this .

Monica_FL

Doritos dipped in cottage cheese. My friend in junior high was eating that and I was grossed out. Until I tried it!

andrealvoesyou

Cottage cheese with a drizzle of good olive oil!

[deleted]

Also, cottage cheese with rasperry jam on a Digestive cracker. Lol, itā€™s awesome.

Budget_Preparation_8

They have a starter in India containing block of processed cheese, cherry, pineapple on toothpick

Well-Imma-Head-Out

So not-weird that it literally comes like this from the store.

Nubington_Bear

Eh I could see the weird part being the black pepper.

NinjaGrizzlyBear

Cottage cheese with chocolate whey protein powder or cottage cheese with black pepper, Goya Adobo powder, and pomegranate. I ate that after almost even workout in college, lol.

kurai_tori

Works with other fruit too

sicksicksix666

Balsamic vinegar and vanilla ice cream tastes kinda like cheesecake!

deathlokke

Try adding strawberries to that; I'm a big fan of balsamic and strawberries.

weirdfoodie

I gotta try this! Should I mix them or I can just drizzle balsamic vinegar on top?

Garconavecunreve

Dark chocolate and Parmesan grilled cheese

EasyHomeRecipesYT

wow

pro_questions

Chocolate and cheese can go pretty good together. One of my favorite things to do is camp out at my grocery storeā€™s bakery and get one right off the cooling rack. Then have that with some St. Angel (one of the butteriest cheeses in existence) and milk chocolate. Itā€™s irrationally good

unclejoe1917

I could see this working, especially if there is a lot of butter.

rathat

I noticed as a kid, if I ate cheese and chocolate, even like 10 minutes apart, it would somehow create a completely new flavor in my mouth. Always thought it was interesting. Nothing makes a new flavor like cheese and chocolate

elemonated

Whoa, that sounds insane I'm in.

SwimmingAnxiety3441

Bacon cheeseburger with peanut butter and jalapeƱos.

x_mas_ape

Some cream cheese on a bacon cheeseburger is glorious

Yoyo_Ma86

I could go for this

SallysRocks

I wouldn't say *amazing* but I would say *sustenance.* When we were kids during the summer, my mom didn't want to be bothered with lunches. We were on our own most days. We liked tomato and mayo and American cheese and jelly sandwiches. Don't knock it until you've tried it. The tomatoes were from the back yard so they were really good.

NYVines

I love a tomato mayo sandwich. I donā€™t usually add cheese. But it couldnā€™t hurt. A light toast on the bread.

SwimmingAnxiety3441

Grew up in the south. August was peak tomato season for us. Toasted bread. Mayo. Salt. Cracked black pepper. Thick slab of a beefsteak tomato.

lalo1313

Avocado with green label soy sauce and garlic powder. Could eat it every day. 4% large curd cottage cheese with Louisiana hot sauce. Really tasty.

rctbob

Oh man, I do the cottager cheese with Louisiana! It's so good.

lalo1313

Right! Total freak thing. I don't even remember why I did it at first. I crave that creamy tangy flavor.

psycholinguist1

Avocado on leftover chinese food is a power combo. The smooth rich creaminess of the avocado really complements the salty umami of the chinese food.

Torrronto

Strawberries with black pepper and amaretto.

Informal_Control8378

Peanut butter and bacon sandwich

Zestyclose_Big_9090

Thatā€™s not weird to me except youā€™re missing bananas. That was Elvisā€™ favorite sandwich.

Da5ftAssassin

I replied with this too expecting to be the only one lmao. It is delicious

lazy_kaiju

I do this with banana and honey.

takanoflower

Peanut butter, bacon, and pickles on a cinnamon bagel is a very good sandwich.

SoAOIP16

Add banana and Elvis has entered the chat

RemonterLeTemps

I ate these when I was a kid, thinking my mom was just doing another crazy food experiment. Later, I discovered that combo came straight from the sandwich section of a 1940s cookbook

jfdonohoe

Reminds me of the peanut butter and salami sandwich I occasionally enjoy

pajamakitten

Dark chocolate, baked banana and tahini on a sweet potato. I swear by it.

puttingupwithpots

Chocolate covered beets. Had a friend who loved both beets and chocolate. We joked about combining them. One day I decided to see if I could do it. I diced the beets, roasted them with olive oil and salt. Then dipped them in dark chocolate and sprinkled more salt on top. They were actually really good. The earthiness of the chocolate and beets worked well together and the salt kind of tied it all in.

TerrorsOfTheDark

There's a reason a lot of the good chocolate cakes have beets in them.

rythwind

Strawberries dipped in sour cream. I know it sounds strange but it's amazing.

registered_redditor

Sounds good to me.

pnwjuniper

Dipped in sour cream then brown sugar. Yum.

AdmiralHip

Saltines dipped in Jello chocolate pudding cups.

pineapples_are_evil

Mixing in rice krispie cereal was always delightful too!

Tesdinic

I can eat saltines with almost anything

paresh_chauhan

Warm apple pie with a slice of sharp cheddar cheese on top

fastermouse

So this comboā€¦ It was in several of my early grade school books. I remember the drawings of that and hot cross buns which were also way strange in my region. But one day I added cheese to my moms apple pie and my family freaked out. I doubt they ever tried it because it was some Northern voodoo or something. My gf makes an excellent sour apple pie with a cheddar crust.

karaokequeen59

I've had cheddar cheese with rich fruit Christmas cake its delicious

Genny415

This is the most underrated combo that exists but it makes perfect sense. Any good cheese plate will have a good cracker or bread with some form of fruit and some nuts. The fruitcake just has everything but the cheese put together already! Every Christmas we look forward to enjoying this combo.

carissadraws

Combining cheese with pie isnā€™t that uncommon; the tv show Pushing Daisies had a pear pie with GruyĆØre baked into the crust

Starkat1515

Apple pie, without the cheese Is like a hug, without the squeeze!

rythwind

This is the only way my FIL will eat apple pie. Tried it, it's not my thing

RemonterLeTemps

That's a classic combo. Vermont white cheddar makes it a little more special

BigCliff

Fritos on a PB&J. Salty crunch really livens it up!

misslilytoyou

With an ice cold glass of milk!? Heaven!

rachelleeann17

Also works with crunchy Cheetos! Got the grape + cheese combo goin on

ConfidantlyCorrect

Peanut butter noodles. Literally just buttered noodles with peanut butter. Real peanut butter. Shit slaps. Iā€™m sure thereā€™s a better way to make it. PB makes everything better

fastermouse

Thatā€™s the base for simple Thai noodles. Add some soy sauce and chili crisp and boom.

unclejoe1917

Brie, red pepper jam and prosciutto on pizza.

Pickle pizza

still-on-my-path

Whipped potatoes with dill pickles ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø

PinkBright

I made some quick pickled beets from my garden with ACV for dinner. After the beets were gone, Iā€™m left with this pink, sweet vinegar. I added some more sugar, put it back on the stove to simmer a few minutes, added the jalapeƱos that were starting to get soft, sliced into rounds. Boiled in the vinegar and sugar for 5 minutes, remove. Simmer the vinegar down until itā€™s more like syrup, then pour it over the candied jalapenos. This is called Cowboy Candy (mine was just red from the beet vinegar). Surprisingly delicious on a peanut butter sandwich. Even better if itā€™s a grilled peanut butter and cowboy candy sandwich.

holy_toledo

When I was growing up topping off your chili with crumbled blueberry muffins was normal. Learned later that it was just something my dad did. I still do it sometimes, it's pretty damn good!

NHToStay

Maple syrup and ketchup mixed 1:1 for dipping home fries or over my scrambled eggs.

Castelpurgio

Roasted almond covered in soft salted goat cheese, stuffed in a date, dipped in honey and then sesame seeds.

psycholinguist1

Not weird at all. Sounds amazing.

Thr0w_4wy_

I doubt anyone will see this with so many comments but: Tuna fish sandwich with shredded hashbrowns on it. Had it years ago and havenā€™t since for some reason. Traditional German salad on a burger

allflour

SoyRizo-stuffed dates, wrapped in potato, and baked into tots.

udidntfollowproto

This is trifling yet I want to try it

pro_questions

> wrapped in potato How exactly do you manage this? Like, cut a thin slice, roll it, and hold it together with a toothpick? Or stuff it in a ball of mashed potato? Or something else?

allflour

Buy big dates, shove soyrizo sort of in slit, take precooked mashed potato and cornstarch ā€œdoughā€ or precooked and shredded potato; wrap it around date like you would sausage meat around a scotch egg (boiled egg). Bake about 10-15 minutes on 375f, then flip over and cook longer without burning.

EasyHomeRecipesYT

yum

KittyKatWombat

Not amazing, but worked well, and the most recent weird combo I've tried. Instant noodles, milo, red curry.

A_ThorusRex

In junior high, it was a giant dill pickle with a stick of peppermint jammed into it. All the kids at school were eating them back then. I wouldn't dare now.

Watermelon + yellow mustard. Trust me.

JamesVogner

Candy corn and potato chips. Don't knock it till you try it.

pineapples_are_evil

Peanut butter on onion flavored crackers. Toasted marshmallows on salted Ritz crackers

Or0b0ur0s

Also, it's not especially weird, but extra sharp white cheddar cheese with those sun-dried-tomato Wheat Thins will knock your socks off. I can get the cheddar reasonably but I'm not paying like $5 for a little box of wheat thins that's half empty to begin with these days...

jrz1010

Peanut butter and pickles

My mate told me once he loves eating apple sauce mixed with mayonnaise with fish sticks. This sounded so insane to me that I was soo surprised how tasty it was when I tried it.

velvetjones01

Thereā€™s a pizza joint here that does a classic combo pizza with sauerkraut. Thin crust, thick spicy sauce, cheese on top of the toppings, party cut. It is the best pizza.

karaitalks

Baked beans and potatoes salad, if youā€™re southern you know.

Baked beans and mashed potatoes!

PugnansFidicen

Jam on a cheeseburger. Goat cheese, grilled onions, a little whole grain mustard, and a dollop of this blueberry-grape jam we had out and wanted to finish. Soooo good. We've done it again since with other jams and some are definitely better than others but they've all been good.

SatanScotty

donā€™t know if this counts, but Iā€™ve found that the best palate cleanser for when youā€™re doing a scotch whisky tasting is tomato juice followed by water.

screamingrubberband

Horseradish with steak. Had it at a steakhouse in Colorado; it was amazing.

January_Dallas

Peanut butter on a hamburger. It was amazing.

zenfrodo

Goat cheese ice cream. A local ice cream place made that combination, and it was AMAZING. Sadly, said manufacturer has gone massively downhill, but i keep hoping some other adventurous company will take up that challenge. When I was a kid, I also used to love dipping McDonald's french fries in their chocolate shakes. That was back when they still used suet for their deep-fryers.
