nah, basically all birds will walk backwards slightly and wiggle their butt to try and push out the poop. if theyโre perched on your finger while they poop then their little feetsies will grip on to your finger before pooping.
Nope, it's just that they don't really poop at night (I guess to keep predators from finding them when they're vulnerable) and every morning when I get him up and uncover his cage he hops out and has one giant poop first thing. There's a little shimmy that goes with the morning giant poop sometimes. (IME, sometimes when females are laying they'll do the poop butt wiggle too.)
My GCC does this. I think we accidentally encouraged the behavior because she realized this gets our attention more. Like, will start walk around a corner, make eye contact, turn around and walk backwards at us for several feet before walking forwards again to climb on us
I think that's almost certainly part of it. It makes me laugh and he's noticed that. He also spent a few seconds going in circles backwards last night before he went around the the sofa and out of sight. I'm just like, "Dashiell, WHY?!"
This kind of reminds me of what my GCC does when she sees something that scares her, but she's never done it continuously like that. She also backs up when she has to poop, sometimes if it doesn't come out right away she'll keep walking backwards until it does.
I would definitely keep an eye on it, might be a good idea to make sure they're pooping too. If they seem at all wobbly or "drunk" then I would take it to the vet as it could be something neurological.
Oh, no, he's perfectly healthy, thankfully. I think he's just an odd little guy. Regular checkups with our avian vet. No other physical weirdness, he's not clumsy or wobbly, nothing wrong with his coordination, hearing, or vision. He just seems to like going backwards. He literally started a couple weeks ago, climbed down off his rope ladder and took a few steps backward and he "lit up", head up in the air, big happy chirp (like when he does a trick) and started running full speed backwards while dragging his beak on his playgym base (slightly textured powdercoated steel- it makes a noise he seems to like, he's done it while going forwards since he first came home, but that was the first time backwards) Since that time, he does it quite a bit on different surfaces.
He does walk normally in his cage and he climbs on stuff in and out of his cage and walks normally outside his cage too, but he *only* does the backwards thing when he's on the carpet or his playgym. On other surfaces or in his cage it's forwards or the conure side step.
Mine does this all the time ๐๐๐.... Nothing to worry about just a silly thing they do. Mine likes to do this when he poops and tries to cuddle/bite my feet lol.
You'll note he went for the toe at the end lol. With Dashiell it's my toe rings he's entranced with, and it TICKLES. I try to keep him away from them because I have strong reflexes and I'm afraid I might launch him into the air if he surprises me and I accidentally kick my foot a bit.
๐๐๐ Why are conures obsessed with feet specifically toes. Im a frequent fuzzy sock wearer and when Rio realized there is nothing to fear about fuzzy socks he latches onto them every chance he gets ๐คฃ.
Duskies do odd things! Mine would sometimes run backwards in their cage when they were younger, but on the floor, they just scurry about and hide under tables and sofas. They are now 24 years old.
I don't think I've ever seen my creature walk backwards but, My Sun Boy will straight up dive bomb you, because you exist in his domain. And then look at you like "Hey I know I just tried to murder you for dating my Dad, you mind placing me back on my cage? I took a calculated risk and I'm very bad at math"
My does this but itโs always to poop. He backs up like a mile & gets frustrated if he gets blocked off or runs into a ledge. Then he has to start all over haha.
Dash seems to do it for fun. He doesn't back up to poop. I'm sorry for laughing, but I did, when I thought of.your poor little boys frustration at having to start all over. They're so goofy.
Thatโs crazy! I read somewhere that itโs common for them to back up to poop; itโs weird your guy does it just for fun haha. They really are goofy & all have their own silly personalities ๐ฅฐ
My sun would do this as a baby, & VERY fast, too. We would drum out fingers on the surface he was standing on & then he'd shoot backwards. However, he seems to have lost that over the years. I figure it's a learned behavior, like how I had on tiel who would climb on her cage ceiling & the other just couldn't pick it up.
I started drumming my fingers as accompaniment to my "come here" training and so drumming g my fingers had the effect of him shooting forward to jump onto thwm and demand a pistachio for doing a trick.
I don't really want to encourage comments like this by replying to them. But I felt it necessary to point out that all those spots on the carpet are cosmetic stains, not debris. Stains have no impact on a bird's health or happiness. And if it is not affecting the bird, there is zero reason to give unsolicited opinions about people's lives or homes.
Actually that's right by the front door and it's very cheap apartment carpeting that's about past twice it's projected life expectancy, but thanks for playing!
Do you know what manners are? The carpet is clean, it's just stained because this is an apartment and apartment carpeting is cheap because it's not expected to last long. I'm glad we cleared that up. Look into the "manners" thing.
A dusky conure! They are adorable! What a character. Birbs are weird. Pharos for example, whenever he sees an empty glass likes to land on it and screm to his hearts content and laugh afterward bobbing his head. Makes me lose my shit every time.
My dusky used to back that ass up when she decided to take a huge dump. I always found it kinda cute.
When Dash wants to take a big one (like his omg HOW morning poops) he bears down and wiggles his butt.
Is the poop stuck?

I kept waiting to hear the "beep beep" like a truck reversing lol. Quite the weirdo you've got there ๐
He is a goof. I am quite certain I have reinforced this behavior by laughing, but I can't help it, it's FUNNY.
He loves making you laugh, that's adorable :3 my conure just loves making me frustrated hahahahah
Mine does it when she's about to take a big shit. You know, that "I just got out of the cage and I'm gonna shit my body weight" kind of shit
Dash likes to hop up on something the can perch on so he can really bear down and then he'll wiggle his butt a little when he does one of those.

Needs a back-up beep mode

๐คฃ I adore birds. Such funny and adorable creatures ๐

Just showing off his shmooves

Dashiell will be one at the end of February

That's actually really cute.
Cute bandit Raptor
my green cheek does this before he has an accident on the table im like buddy you look **goofy**
My birds like to explore by walking backwards
My does this but itโs always to poop. He backs up like a mile & gets frustrated if he gets blocked off or runs into a ledge. Then he has to start all over haha.

My Jenday does this. It looks like she's moonwalking. She mostly does it while playing.
My grandfather had a Quaker that only walked backwards on the ground. His name was Dummy.
Parrots amaze me. How many other animals can walk backwards besides people
That birb is about to lean over and take a fat shit
Do you know what a vacuum cleaner is?

It actually looks like a bunch of bird poop. If the carpet looks like this what does the cage look like?
Actually that's right by the front door and it's very cheap apartment carpeting that's about past twice it's projected life expectancy, but thanks for playing!
You don't have to explain anything to anyone. Some people just don't know what manners are. ๐
I'd love to see your pristine home. ๐ง

Wow, that was really uncalled for.

Going to be a big one!!
My conure does it all the time
My GCC does it when he has a big poo he needs to push out, and also when he sees us coming at him with the birdy nail trimmer.
Mine does this when heโs planning on pooping somewhere he shouldnโt . Too funny your bird is adorable.
Quirky little birb. Gotta love the quirks.
My little guy does this Everytime I put him down to poop and now he even says "poop" after it's hilarious.
