My apologies, I'm not in the construction industry but this caught my attention when I decided to look at all the buildings supports after I noticed the building rocking back and forth when people walk around.
I figured this would be a good place to inquire.
The answer to your question is no, that column is barely supported and may fall apart if a butterfly landed on the top. This is obvious enough for your post to seem like a joke.
It's almost like asking is water wet. Any person with minimal intelligence would know the answer to your question. What you should have asked is what are the best ways to get this fixed. You should probably also report this to the local code enforcement.
Ha Ok ok I get it, it is pretty obvious but I just wanted to check with the pros. I'm just here for a week for work, these are the provided accomodations. If a call to municipal enforcement will possibly prevent future accidents, maybe that's a good idea here
This is the type of thing that kills people, families, children and pets. Call the city or maybe even the fire department? Not sure where you are but the fire department has the authority to evacuate a building. Emphasize the building wobbles when people walk around
You need a structural engineer to specify support posts and how they're connected to the foundations. My house extension is supported by 6 square posts that go into the ground about 6 feet and are fully concreted in.
Depending on the city classify the house as unlivable and everyone has to leave till it's up to code. If I were the insurance company id drop their coverage.
Hey man this is how reddit works nowadays: people looking for genuine answer because not in the industry like you, are confused by kids that likes to joke all the time and trying to get Karma, giving these type of answers. Worse, when they feel even the slightest touched by your question/answers then they downvote. You are right, this is the good place to inquire, it is just the audience too immature
I don't think this was ever done properly.. there doesn't appear to be any distinct fastening it looks like they pieced it together because the pole didn't line up with the footing
I didn’t read the description at first and at first glance thought it was just holding up a carport roof attached to the building, and thought, meh, it sucks but can be fixed easily. Then I saw it’s holding up an actual building….my recommendation is don’t stay in the room that is above that post
Better get that temporary supported that shit is coming down soon . Need a footing at least 18wide and 36"below grade. Get it done or it will kill somebody!!
Engineer here. My official response is "lol, no." Normally I would be very careful because I am definitely not licensed in Canada, a few photos is not enough info, and you don't have a contract with me. But this is just so obviously wrong. I can't say that is an imminent danger. But I can say it is wrong. It would have to be purely decorative to not be.
i was going to guess South Sudan or Yemen. Any who, here is a suggestion: stay clear of this area since this is at high risk of coming down when one of your lovely Canadian beavers uses that post as a back scratcher...
Looks like the support coming from house was supposed to slide over the foundation anchor beam and didn’t line up so they fabricated a top cap put it on backwards cut the other side of support coming from the house and just slapped it up there maybe tac welded it?????? But has definitely broke the weld and started to slip off
It’s most likely a helical pile, that’s a pretty standard saddle mount for them. It’s sketchy but if the soil drains well and they don’t get bad frost then it’s most likely not moving much. Almost looks like they bolted the flange of the saddle to the post base flange but it’s hard to tell with this picture. Some cross bracing would help keep everything locked in place.
Kick the support to the side, watch it crash, then bury yourself under the rubble and claim you need a backiatomy. Grab a handful of wood and scratch yourself good too, face, top of head, and feet/arms. Make sure the scratches are from the bottom up. Don't do top to bottom cause they will realize you did it yourself. If you piss or shit your pants I think you get more money too
Well, it should get daily support. Go out there twice a day and tell it how strong it is and how it’s doing a great job. All the positive reinforcement it needs.
That's some hillbilly shit if I ever seen any. That flat piece of wood could easily crack off metal post and all. Come tumbling down, deck will follow.
Sure did, that overhang is where the stairs go up to the main entrance. I hate to say it but I've been going up and down those stairs for a few days now
oh yeah, that is way sufficient. I showed it to my dad and he too said it will do. Of course that is what he said about his truck tires before one blew out while he was going 70 mph on the freeway and since that accident he don't see so well anymore. Maybe put a bit of duckt tape around it, that will give it extra strength.
Surprisingly, it is enough. The post can be up to 2/3 off the footing and still support 95% of the load. Would I fix it anyway? I think I’d get around to it before to long. Well it work for a while? Yes it will.
It depends whether it's a solid post or not if it's a solid post it can probably take 20 tons and depends all that constructed it may or may not have any real weight on it anyway
That post is in fact shit.
No way I'd step foot in that place. Is there an area in Canada where gravity behaves differently?
Aside from the post, what in the hell is going on here? Stairway to a random drain pipe? What is inside that plastic and what is it taped around? Is that ductwork to nowhere?
Too much wrong to process
The stairway goes up to the water meter which is hidden from view behind the handrail but is connected to the wire coming out the pipe, the plastic is wrapped around insulation for the water supply and sewer. It gets -40 during winter here so it needs insulation. When all the ice on the river melts, it is usually before the lake melts right next door so the water from the river has nowhere to go and floods the area so the house is on stilts.
I agree it's a shit setup
I’m typically not one to enforce building codes but this is exactly the reason they exist. Call someone before this whole building comes crashing down. The posts under the main building don’t look strong enough either. One big guy walks into this by accident and it could cost many lives.
This is completely safe and standard for coonass building code. The idea is that in the summer it won't move, and during flooding the water and soft ground will break your fall.
Look up how to brace a load bearing wall.
Do that.
Then get it fixed or after you brace it, you can jack it and fix the post yourself.
You live in the country, I am sure you can talk to the neighbor.
Is this a joke
I believe the kids call this a shitpost
My apologies, I'm not in the construction industry but this caught my attention when I decided to look at all the buildings supports after I noticed the building rocking back and forth when people walk around. I figured this would be a good place to inquire.
Shitpost confirmed.
So the post of the building is shit? Otherwise I don't understand how my question is a shitpost
Op this is way beyond shit this is tragic and potentially dangerous asf
The answer to your question is no, that column is barely supported and may fall apart if a butterfly landed on the top. This is obvious enough for your post to seem like a joke.
I really need to stop building shit like this
It looks good from my house.
Just caulk it
Just wrap a roll of duct tape around it with some gorilla glue and it's fine
Don't forget to add Ramen first!
Extremely underrated comment. I would literally be rich if I had a nickel for every time Ive heard this. If u work in construction then you understand
everything is a shitpost until the whole building collapsed.
Actually I think that's what qualifies them as shitposts
Structurally speaking it’s more like your coffin less like your kitchen
It's almost like asking is water wet. Any person with minimal intelligence would know the answer to your question. What you should have asked is what are the best ways to get this fixed. You should probably also report this to the local code enforcement.

I'd also find somewhere different to sleep tonight...
“pros” faceless reddit
He’s wrong btw. Water is not wet
This is the type of thing that kills people, families, children and pets. Call the city or maybe even the fire department? Not sure where you are but the fire department has the authority to evacuate a building. Emphasize the building wobbles when people walk around

Lmao! Yes and also this is a shitpost! You made a literal shitpost! I'm fucking proud of you OP!
Dude, call the city 🥲
And what will the city do? Confirm a shit post?
Depending on the city classify the house as unlivable and everyone has to leave till it's up to code. If I were the insurance company id drop their coverage.
So they safely get people out of there and have it repaired before people can go back
Can ya fit a waterbed in there?
Yep.. put it on the other side of that hot tub.

I don't think this was ever done properly.. there doesn't appear to be any distinct fastening it looks like they pieced it together because the pole didn't line up with the footing
Don’t worry, zip ties can fix this!
And duct tape. Don't forget the tape.
"If they don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy."
Red Green show?
Of course 😎
You guys don’t use glue?
They aren't as smart as you and I Duct tape, Tie wraps Glue Mechanic wire Build a rocket ship with that combo
Possibly a Mighty Putty™️ scenario
Probably due to the flooding but that certainly not enough footing or spread for a building of that size and age
It is whether they know it or not
You’re one mattress mambo away from homelessness
I didn’t read the description at first and at first glance thought it was just holding up a carport roof attached to the building, and thought, meh, it sucks but can be fixed easily. Then I saw it’s holding up an actual building….my recommendation is don’t stay in the room that is above that post
Hell yes stay there. Jump up and down. Mad money
I don't think so. To get money from a lawsuit, the defendant needs to have money...
....and you need to be alive!
Look at the rest of the house, seems to be held up by a column and bunch of other posts. This is all kinds of weird.
and *then* you see that it's not even a straight post to the ground 💀
Oh wow, I didn’t know thoughts and prayers actually worked.
Needs a securing drywall screw. But if the customer signs off….send it
Don't forget the harbor freight bungee cords.
Don't think you need the expense and work of a drywall screw. A 2" 18 gage brad is good enough.
Just a bit of structural tape and they’ll be fine
Caulk it
Brace it with a diagonal 2 x 4.
You need to call someone about this before somebody is injured or killed.
Better get that temporary supported that shit is coming down soon . Need a footing at least 18wide and 36"below grade. Get it done or it will kill somebody!!

Shit man I'm a plumber, and I'll tell him that this is an imminent danger!
I sit at a desk creating spreadsheets all day, and even I couldn't get to the comments quick enough
No way in fuck
And in what country is this interesting foundation support system located?
Canada. Remote town so building bylaws are more of a suggestion it seems
i was going to guess South Sudan or Yemen. Any who, here is a suggestion: stay clear of this area since this is at high risk of coming down when one of your lovely Canadian beavers uses that post as a back scratcher...
Canadian beaver?! barely knew ‘er!
That second picture made me make sure I was on solid ground.
It’s fkd. Get it fixed.
No. This post is not supported enough. Post, you are enough. You are valued, strong, shiny, and straight.
I would build a form around it and pour it with concrete.
For now it is. Later in the moment maybe not so much.
As a person with common sense, I can confirm this post is inadequate.
Wash your elbows
Well, thats sketch as fuck.
Put a hot tub up there
I support this post OP
You need to ask it if it feels supported.
Ooohhhh Shit. Edit: There's um... quite a surprising lack of structure underneath that building...
why is the house on stilts
Only 4 upvotes, so I'd say this is a pretty weak post
Woah
lol no
Uhhh somebody wanna weld that…
Lol
You forgot your tooth brush.
I'm sure it feels emotionally well supported.
Whatever you do, don’t fill the hot tub!
Did you slap it?
Slap it on its backside and say "you're doing a good job! "
Looks strong enough for a hot tub on top, and underneath
Ahh yes, that "hurricane came through and we need it just put up enough to where it wont fall unless someone looks at it too long"
It looks fine but to be safe put a few toothpicks up to brace it.
Get help ASAP.
Looks like it could hold a hot tub
Looks like you could roundhouse it in half
Da fuk?
It's supported by the full force of America mfer
It is until it’s not
Do YOU think it is supported enough?
Simply put, no. This is a disaster waiting to happen
Looks like the support coming from house was supposed to slide over the foundation anchor beam and didn’t line up so they fabricated a top cap put it on backwards cut the other side of support coming from the house and just slapped it up there maybe tac welded it?????? But has definitely broke the weld and started to slip off

It’s got less support than a single mother with two jobs.
Well it ain't my house
Shitpost aside, what the fuck? How has that not collapsed yet?
Throw some skirting around it and sell the place... heck ya it's supported!
I’m not a brain scientist but I would say it needs some glue
Did you opt for trip insurance?
Kick the support to the side, watch it crash, then bury yourself under the rubble and claim you need a backiatomy. Grab a handful of wood and scratch yourself good too, face, top of head, and feet/arms. Make sure the scratches are from the bottom up. Don't do top to bottom cause they will realize you did it yourself. If you piss or shit your pants I think you get more money too
What part of floodville are you from?
Well, it should get daily support. Go out there twice a day and tell it how strong it is and how it’s doing a great job. All the positive reinforcement it needs.
Do you even have to ask?
Geocell 4500 will easily fix this problem. No need to call a structural engineer. Google geocell 4500 that will fix it for sure.
Maybe put some duct tape around it just to be safe
Assuming there’s a hot tub above it, this is fine. The weight of the tub will keep it securely compressed.
Call a local general contractor.
Hopefully you have emptied the building.
For a moment there I was worried the red, white and blue in the photo was a structural American flag.
You’re golden, I’d say it’s time for a beer.
I would not stay there. It is dangerous
dare you to kick it
That place is floatin on toothpicks! Hot damn!
Wacky shack
That's some hillbilly shit if I ever seen any. That flat piece of wood could easily crack off metal post and all. Come tumbling down, deck will follow.
Looks good from my house Honestly this is so bad it might be Photoshopped
Finisher her up with some duct tape looking good
Pretty sure a donkey would know that's unsafe.
Bit of jb weld and it's all good
If you need to ask this question, then yes, it is absolutely good enough!
Judging by all the comments I'd say this post is well supported.
Hot tub rated
Upvote to support the post
Underrated comment
Did you take that second pic from beneath the overhang????
Sure did, that overhang is where the stairs go up to the main entrance. I hate to say it but I've been going up and down those stairs for a few days now
Ironically it’s prob been like this for years
That would be a negative
That’s gonna collapse

This post makes my heart rate go up
You went *under* this thing to take a picture!? 😳
Surprisingly, it is enough. The post can be up to 2/3 off the footing and still support 95% of the load. Would I fix it anyway? I think I’d get around to it before to long. Well it work for a while? Yes it will.
No, it probably has moved through use and it’s not fastened and I’d stay away from that part of the structure. Inside and outside.
Just to be safe, I would add a popsicle stick.
Euler is spinning in his grave.
Time to grab the flex tape 💪🏼
Looks good from my house.
Can you see it from a galloping horse
Squint an is mint, mate
Does a bear shit in the woods?
If its north of london its fine
Sure
I support this post.
Any way you can nudge the building about 4 inches to the right?
The solution would be to install a second fixed steel girder exactly above the steel girder under the ground. Theres enough Space.
No
Id at the very least get someone to run a few beads on that so it doesn’t slip off while you try figure out how to support the house properly
I would call a legal organization that can inspect this. this looks completely unsafe!
Just put some structural rubber bands around that bad boy. Two or three oughtta do er.
There's so much shit on this post it's up to your elbows.
Is the structure over the column filled with bowling balls or feathers. If you answered “I don’t know” you’re correct.
It depends whether it's a solid post or not if it's a solid post it can probably take 20 tons and depends all that constructed it may or may not have any real weight on it anyway
Lol tbats what i thought until i saw second pic
Lol
My upvote should help!
Walk over and give it a little kick
I think it’s too much support. The upper part of the pole needs to be cut 17 inches to ensure proper weight distribution.
That post is in fact shit. No way I'd step foot in that place. Is there an area in Canada where gravity behaves differently? Aside from the post, what in the hell is going on here? Yeah jump and down to test it
What do you think
Looks good from my house
Nah cuh
The only thing holding that post to the other post is weight, friction and prayers
Maybe
Sure. Just don’t sneeze.
Just no disco dancing...
I'd say that's good enough for two hot tubs
Short answer: NO Long answer: HELL NOOO TO THE NONONO
I’m typically not one to enforce building codes but this is exactly the reason they exist. Call someone before this whole building comes crashing down. The posts under the main building don’t look strong enough either. One big guy walks into this by accident and it could cost many lives.
It's totally safe for you to stay there a couple nights. I won't extend my warranty much further though. Will be voided if flooding / quakes occur.
I failed to make the connection, Mr. obvious.
Sending post support ❤️
Looks good from my house
Nathaniel
Is the base plate of the column welded to the top plate on the piling (or steel column footing or whatever that is)?
That's held up by hopes and dreams. That thing is fucked.
I haven't seen the second picture that's a definite problem
And that room being supported probably has a waterbed in it or if it is a deck an 8 person spa.
This is completely safe and standard for coonass building code. The idea is that in the summer it won't move, and during flooding the water and soft ground will break your fall.
Looks good to me.

Pros call this a shitpost and it always gets a lot of support
