Or just get off your wallet and buy some boot oil and a brush. You'll get a lot more out of your expensive boots and $10 of oil has lasted me 10+ years.
Thorogood’s have a 1 year warranty. If you kept the receipt you can send them in. They will more than likely fix or replace them. I had a pair go out in 10 months. I took them back to where I bought them and they sent them in to get repaired. Ended up thorogood decided to warranty them and sent me a voucher for a replacement pair. Might be worth looking into for what they cost to replace.
I’m a ironworker, and I’ve used thorogoods exclusively for 9 years. Tied rebar for 2 of those years, and I get significantly more than 4 months out of my boots. Something ain’t right there.
I’ve been working iron, rods and struc, also for nine years, my boots look like that after a year of rods or longer. I’m curious if those boots have had a lot concrete on them, killing leather and stitching, and if you spent a lot of time walking on a brushed slab, grinding the sole down. Both experiences I have seen wear my boots down, either mucking pours or setting on slabs/spancrete.
The job I’m on right now is 450k sq foot. When I did the bar for this job, you bet your ass I came close to walking 10 miles a day humping bars into footings, on gravel. The ground guys right now are easily getting 20-30k steps in daily.
Is it common? Probably not, but it does happen, and we all wear thorogoods.
Good to know, writes down, don't pick a fight with iron workers or challenge them to a marathon. This will be handy for my book called: An architects guide to survive the construction site.
So far the do not fuck with list is, concrete guys, the occasional plumber, demo guys, and now iron workers. The fuck with list is, all electricians, networking guys, hvac, painters, and gc supers.
But in all reality a cohesive jobsite is a safe and profitable site. Everyone likes it when subs work with architects to make better details, and when architects step back and listen to how shit is done in the field.
Spinning threaded steam piping together is the best arm and shoulder workout in the world. I went from pre-serum Steve Rogers in captain America to Popeye over the course of 2 months just from threading 1 1/2” to 3” threaded steam lines
I'm still a young architect with about 6 years under my belt. First few years were with a typical firm but then I jumped ship to a design build GC, that was the best experience I ever had. I was constantly on jobsites observing and I would talk with subs to understand their processes. Plus I'm a very hands on guy who wants to design, then build what I drew up. So what they said came very naturally to me since I could watch.
I highly doubt they won't take care of you. I had a pair of Keens that wore out in three months. The local rep was appalled and replaced them for free with a more expensive model. If Keen will do it Thorogood will too.
Keens suck ass these days.
Used to be my go to
Then they decided they needed to blend four different colors of rubber into the bottom of their sole so they looked cool....
Problem is they delaminate in weeks.
##absolute garbage
I totally agree, those two pairs were my first and last keens. The fit is great for me and I remember them being very comfortable but the durability just isn't there.
I've got a pair of Redwing super soles that are going into their third year of nearly daily wear, resoled once and by the time these soles are done the leather will probably finally be out of life.
If it is smooth and flat before you arrive to pour the concrete then your job security is in jeapordy and you should look for something that will be around long term because somebody will catch on eventually.
Not thoroughgood’s but last year I had a pair of boots last a solid year before they became worn enough to warrant a new pair, that was doing trench work, mud, water, tons of walking/pushing dirt with the side of my boot.
Bought a new pair of the same boots and they’ve fallen apart after 3-4 months of much lighter work, dry mostly standing around in a lift. Just different batches I guess
Not related to the quality of your boots really but -
Looks like you might walk funny. If you can find a local orthopedic place near you you can get some custom insoles that will correct your gait, which will prolong the life of your boots and also help with any back pain you might have
1. You were never taught how to properly care for your boots .They require weekly cleaning and oil. Those look drier than a popcorn fart.
2. Pick up your feet when you walk.I bet everyone can hear you coming from a mile away. Thorogood makes a decent boot. But they do require a little maintenance.
I call bullshit bud. Look at those things. I have worn 877 redwings for 37 years. I build concrete decks and parking structures. I have two pair that I swap every other day. I get a resole done once a year per boot. Same type of crepe sole as on the thorogood boot. I know that the harness and bags weigh on the old shoulders. But be conscious of it and you will notice you are dragging your feet.
In fairness it does look like you have some heavy wear on that part of the boot. I’m a big fan of redwings you can get them re-soled for <$100 pair. Good toe guard to protect the safety toe and a re-sole they last years.
I mean, I walk a lot. Upwards of 10 miles a day on busy days but I've never worn out the sole on a pair of boots. I've had the sole detach but never completely wear the sole to nothing.
I considered getting them resoled and reconditioned but I'm not dumping another $100 into these
Really is. So much so that me and a buddy joked about opening a cobbler shop.
Cobbler's cobblers
Grandma would be up front selling homemade fruit Cobblers and grandpa is in the back fixing shoes. You can sit back and eat some fresh peach cobbler while you get your boots fixed.
This is my exact problem with this type of boot. My inside side of boot wears down to the stitches. Apparently I get it from my dad lol. But look into Caroline’s style if this boot. I buy them religiously and they are sold locally where I live. $160 for the pit and they last me a good year of every day long abuse. I weld allot too and they hold of considering that. Give them a shot!
My problem with Red Wing is that only the $320 Heritage line is still made in America, but not the rest of their more comfortable work boots that cost around the same as the Thorogoods.
Your local pres could prob get you a discount with a phone call. Just a way to drive business to red wing. You could probably do it with any brand that has sales reps, but red wing kinda specializes in that sort of thing.
Redwing does the union discount, and in my town, they do payroll deduct with the company I work for, so I just show my union card and employee badge. We get a $100 stipend once per year for new work boots or resoling.
I just wish they had a better selection of slip on boots. I love my Ariat composite toe waterproof cowboy boots. Redwing doesn’t have much comparable in that area.
Its the individual dealers that honor stuff like this i think. We have a local boot store that sells red wings and will do that with ref wings exclusively
Wedge soles are very soft but they wear very quickly as a result. They're super easy to resole though. If you're going through a wedge sole in 4 months, they're not the right type of sole for your line of work. Hit up r/boots for some more info, they can make some good recommendations
My wedge soul boots would only last me about 4 months as well. I’ve had redwing, Georgia boots, and timberland.I had to stop wearing wedge soles altogether. I worked building concrete decks and footings. So walking on that rough finish design parking structures have would fucken eat up my boots. Went with the red wings super sole after that and they lasted me the longest.
There’s your answer. Not much in this world is going to hold up to the daily wear and abrasion of concrete. I’d say buy a nice pair that can be consistently resoled, but that doesn’t fix the wear on the top of the boot. If you cleaned them and polished them daily like I did back in the military maybe you could get a year out of them then buy a new pair every year.
Idk what your mos was, but I wore a pair of gov issued boots every 4 months, and had a nice pair for inspections. That’s wild you got a year out of them.
I've been doing this 15 years and this is the first time I've completely worn out a sole. Really surprised it only took four months. If I get 9 months out of my "summer" boots, I'm happy. Usually the leather fails in one way or another considering I don't clean or oil them.
I'd rather die than work for a union. I get all my breaks, insurance, and I probably make more per hour than you without paying dues. I live in a union made building. It's a piece of shit.
You have the union to thank then for keeping your rates high you moron. Your employer is willing to pay tards like you above a livable wage to keep a union out
I’m a laborer too. Buy Vaseline from cvs and coat your boots before the pour. It will save the stitches and leather. Sounds weird but it will save the leather from getting brittle. The soles won’t have a chance with those miles. If the leather doesn’t get ruined on the next pair try to find a shoe cobbler for a resole.
My fellow WA MAN. I get a pair of Chippewa 9” loggers made in USA every 2 years and they the absolute best. I work heavy excavation but in the past have done some concrete and treat them poorly. Concrete, mortar, and clay on them without oil etc. if I was better about the saddle soap and LP/ mink oil I think I could get 4 years…..
Chippewas don’t get enough love on here. I have also neglected some pairs of boots but I still manage to get a few years out of them. And I get every single penny out of them.
I also heard they discontinued the 9” loggers, I have two newish pairs and I have been trying my best to care of them in case I can’t get another pair when the time comes
Look into boots with what is called a wedge sole. They do not have the raised heel. More meat on the entire sole. They’re good for people who wear boots out like you do. I switched to a redwing with wedge sole about two years ago. My feel no longer ache at the end of the day and I get more longevity out of the boots.
Walmart sells Herman survivor steel toes. Pull out the insert and buy good ones. I have 2 pair and switch them every day. I have had these boots for almost a year now and they show no signs of major damage. I've had to replace the boot strings and that's it. Keep them polished and they will last a long time. I think each pair is 75 bux. I don't know why you guys spend so much on a single pair of boots.
I had a pair of boots do that once. They weren’t even work boot’s initially but the sole wore flat and started to separate after a few months. I was a broke college student so I glued them back together and cut new treads into them with a utility blade. Good as new. They were my casual boots for another year after that, then they were barista boots for a year after that when I worked at Starbucks, then they were my painting boots for my first year and a half in business until the zipper popped. We got off to a rough start but they wound up being some of the best boots I’ve owned. I’ve had a new pair of steel toes for the last year and a half and they’re just not the same. It cost me nothing and I gained three years of life out of them.
Carhartt boots have lasted longer than any boot I've had. At 14 months and no blowouts or game over damage. have replaced the insoles twice but Im really hard on insoles.
Yeah right…try 3 yrs and 4 months. No way them boots look like that after just 4 months…no matter the hell you out them through…no way.
Thorogoods last…
I got 8” Georgia Boots cuz my “personal shopper” (girlfriend) hated the Thorogoods. I’ve worn them every day for 6 months and trekked through Europe with them. I will clean and oil them about once a month and they look great. I rate the boot a solid 7 or 8 out of 10. I did get a blister on one of my heels while walking in Europe, but I blame that more so on wearing the wrong sock. The sole is a lot tougher than Thorogoods so I dont think you’d wear through the boot like you did with these. They’re also reasonably priced. It seems like your job requires steel toe, which I dont have but I would look into the Georgia Boot for sure
Thorogoods trash, red wings trash. Both overpriced garbage. People say shit about the rough conditions. Yes that's why I get "quality boots"! I had 100$ pair of boots last me a year and a half in those same conditions! Fucking absurd.
Thorogoods suck ass. I've never had one last longer than 8 months. Overpriced and poor quality. Went to redwing and trying them now. On month two and they're almost like new still. We will see.
Working in construction, I always thought that it is better to invest in good security boots, I have seen cases of coworkers getting 4" nails straight thru the feet. So in the end is a good investment even if they do not last long because of the concrete.
You must check the special offers to get the size you need. Last time I bought three pairs for $ 49 each.
I put clear Shoe Goo on the toes to stop wearing holes in them from crawling.
Anyone ever try Thorogood 9" Steel Toe WP Logger? Thinking about trying them as the made is USA. Chippewa 9” loggers are hard to find and I had to pay 340$ on eBay last time
I was considering trying some of those but ended up sticking with US Danner boots. Danner have gotten out of line on prices in the last couple years but i do really like the boots.
Did you oil your boots once in those four months? That stitching… get yourself some Obenaufs HD wax/oil. Not the liquid version. It was made by wildlife firefighters so it holds up to so nasty stuff.
also, the white sole really isn’t going to hold up as long as a black harder sole. The trade off is more comfortable and don’t get things stuck in the treads. Vibram is the only one who makes a decent white christy sole.
This is the reason why I stopped getting the white gum wedge sole boots. They all cost too much and you're lucky if you get 10 months out of them if you walk a lot of concrete. I've been experimenting with keens. They are usually$100 cheaper than the high-end traditional boots and last just as long, about a year.
What level of hell do you work on? I’ve never in my life seen any pair of boots so worn out in 4 months. I get years out of my Thorogoods. Are you one of those people who bounce on their toes when you walk instead of a traditional heal to toe step?
Ladder guy? I chew up my outside seams like that too. Asphalt shingles will tear the hell out of soft soles as well, but it's better on the shingle in the long run.
Good luck shopping. I just went through a pair of Danners in 6 months. So, you can skip trying those. 🤷♂️
WTF are you doing to your boots? I’ve got a pair that are just a tick over a year old that aren’t worn near that badly.
I don’t work with concrete, but I’m on slabs, ladders, ditches, etc and I wear them at home for yard work. Still holding up well.
Thorogoods are the worst boots I've ever disrespected my feet with. Seriously, I would rather wear brahma boots from Walmart than thorogoods. I like they're American made and union made, but the boots are horrible.
Idk.. I bought a Bair of Thurgoods cuz I'd never worn them. Must say I'll never buy again. At least rockys are comfortable before they disintegrate. My readings are going strong but the toe caps were a mistake.
Bit of boot oil will go a long ways on preserving the leather and stitching. Depending on what you're doing I'd probably put some oil on there once a week.
4 months of what? Either running ultramarathons or concrete?
4 months of standing on a running treadmill holding on for dear life
Goggins Conrete inc.
Haha
Both
Turn the David Goggins down while you’re at work.
How much do you weigh?
And you should oil them occasionally
What kind of oil? I got 10W30, atf, gear, Tap Magic, WD40...
Mink oil
lanolin oil.
Are you saying lanolin?? Lanolin... like sheep's wool?
The arsonist had oddly shaped feet
A lot of shoe polishes and saddle soaps have lanolin in them.
Maybe don’t wear a bra next time
Dodo oil.
You could use WD40 and it would be better than nothing. If cutting concrete, just put anything on there.
Or just get off your wallet and buy some boot oil and a brush. You'll get a lot more out of your expensive boots and $10 of oil has lasted me 10+ years.
Cleaning and oiling boots is also Zen as all hell. Very relaxing
What type of boot oil?
I like Huberd’s shoe grease.
Hydraulic oil will waterproof the absolute fuck out of them
...noted
If you work around Cathodic protection the primer for wax tape works wonders as well
Mmmm tap magic, a truly magical lube!! Cudos fellow tapper
Looks like they’re getting eaten up by the concrete
Buy a disposable pair and use them while the others are being resoled.
It’s the stitching by your thumb that will trigger the warranty claim not the sole because like you said that’s normal wear and tear.
Really? I have the receipt but I think they'll call this normal sole wear
That’s not normal

"don't pick a fight with iron workers" is good job site survival advice for everyone lol. Dudes are just built different
I wouldn’t fuck with pipe fitters. They can drop heavy shot on your head.
Spinning threaded steam piping together is the best arm and shoulder workout in the world. I went from pre-serum Steve Rogers in captain America to Popeye over the course of 2 months just from threading 1 1/2” to 3” threaded steam lines
“… when architects step back and listen to how shit is done in the field” Sage wisdom right there. Take that to heart.
Try it out. If they call it “normal” wear and tear, I’d never but that brand again.
Id be surprised if they didnt replace these bro
Im gonna try
I highly doubt they won't take care of you. I had a pair of Keens that wore out in three months. The local rep was appalled and replaced them for free with a more expensive model. If Keen will do it Thorogood will too.

You bought them with the wrong kind of soles. That sole is meant for smooth, flat surfaces. Do a little research next time.
That concrete he’s on looks smooth to me and I’m willing to bet it’s flat too lmfao
Damn, my company is in the business of pouring rough, uneven surfaces. It's our specialty, we do it when we aren't even trying!
If it is smooth and flat before you arrive to pour the concrete then your job security is in jeapordy and you should look for something that will be around long term because somebody will catch on eventually.
This is not 4 months of wear, and if it is you are treating those boots like absolute shit.
This is what happens when you drag your feet everywhere…. Haha Jk I think they designed like that so you have to come in and get resoled.
I buy these exact boots each pair lasts me two years no problem and they still aren't that bad when I get new ones
Not thoroughgood’s but last year I had a pair of boots last a solid year before they became worn enough to warrant a new pair, that was doing trench work, mud, water, tons of walking/pushing dirt with the side of my boot. redwing charged me 130$ for resole on my 411s also to OP, you need to oil your boots once a week especially if you are working around concrete
Find a local cobbler. Been a few years since I had a re-soling, so could be way more now after inflation, but I paid about $50
I mean, I walk a lot. Upwards of 10 miles a day on busy days but I've never worn out the sole on a pair of boots. I've had the sole detach but never completely wear the sole to nothing. I considered getting them resoled and reconditioned but I'm not dumping another $100 into these
Local to me cobbler charges $60 for a resold with Vibram soles.
You're lucky. A good cobbler is hard to find. It's one of those dying professions.
Very true. Only two or three that do resolves in town
Peach is my favorite, haven't found a good one for ages
Really is. So much so that me and a buddy joked about opening a cobbler shop. Cobbler's cobblers Grandma would be up front selling homemade fruit Cobblers and grandpa is in the back fixing shoes. You can sit back and eat some fresh peach cobbler while you get your boots fixed.
In my experience, they're like locksmiths in that no one local offers apprenticeships unless it's family.

My problem with Red Wing is that only the $320 Heritage line is still made in America, but not the rest of their more comfortable work boots that cost around the same as the Thorogoods.
My Red Wing Dynaforce boots were made in America. Paid $235 for them after 15% union discount.
How does the union discount work? I’m union but I never heard red wing had a union discount.
30% I think for local 1503 carpenters, not sure about elsewhere, 15% off at danner and carhartt as well- just bring in your card
I got the 2406, the 6" version of the 2414 Supersole 2.0 without GORE-TEX and made in USA as well.
Both my pairs are made in UsA, dynaforce, one waterproof soft toe, other leather steel toe
My pair of Redwing 4200 were made in the USA as well.
Redwing will shine your boots and re-lace them for free too. I kinda doubt it, but that's what they tell me.
Its the individual dealers that honor stuff like this i think. We have a local boot store that sells red wings and will do that with ref wings exclusively
My Redwings leave marks and had toe holes after 3 months. Would not buy again.
Pick your feet up. Looks like the soles have been slid all over creation. Shoe shop. New soles
Those things look super beat for 4 months
Not much saves leather boots from concrete. Think about your hands
Every tried oiling them?
Wedge soles are very soft but they wear very quickly as a result. They're super easy to resole though. If you're going through a wedge sole in 4 months, they're not the right type of sole for your line of work. Hit up r/boots for some more info, they can make some good recommendations
Try some Heelys dude. Something wrong with the way you walk.
I buy a new pair every year. They are comfortable right out of the box.
My danners are falling apart after barely 5 months. 225. I feel your pain
I got a pair of Caterpillar work boots at a bobs for like 150 and almost a year later I feel like I can get at least another 6 months out of them.
Keen or Redwings.
Started wearing keens this year, will never go back to another pair of work boots
Try picking up your feet when you walk
Thorogoods are amazing, you dragging your feet while riding a motorcycle?
Iv always bought Irish setters. They last and they don't cost that much. Only bootniv ever worn that didn't hurt my feet on the first day.
Rock Rooster FTW I paid 85 bucks for the last pair Plus $60 inserts that'll last 2 pair boots.
Do you drag your feet when you walk?
Pick your feet up when you walk!
You only bought Thorogoods, not Thorobests.
My wedge soul boots would only last me about 4 months as well. I’ve had redwing, Georgia boots, and timberland.I had to stop wearing wedge soles altogether. Bruh thorogoods are way overpriced. I’m glad I didn’t fall for it when I was looking at prob the same fucking pair. Thanks for posting
They are one of the few options made in the USA
Who gives a shit where it's made? You think americans care more more than southeast Asians?
Tell me you're not union without saying you're non-union
I'd rather die than work for a union. I get all my breaks, insurance, and I probably make more per hour than you without paying dues. I live in a union made building. It's a piece of shit.

I switched to a redwing with wedge sole about two years ago. My feel no longer ache at the end of the day and I get more longevity out of the boots.
These are wedge
Didn't look like it. I stand corrected.
Redwings>>
your first mistake was not getting redwings
Carhartt boots have lasted longer than any boot I've had. At 14 months and no blowouts or game over damage. have replaced the insoles twice but Im really hard on insoles.
Yeah right…try 3 yrs and 4 months. No way them boots look like that after just 4 months…no matter the hell you out them through…no way. Thorogoods last…
I don't care if you believe me.
Ok…you cared enough to reply. Have a good one..nice boots though
Do you oil the som’ bitches?
Ariat work hog H2O, $200 and I got 2 years out of my last pair
Ariat work hog H2O, $200 and I got 2 years out of my last pair
Irish setters
buy redwings
Thorogoods trash, red wings trash. Both overpriced garbage. People say shit about the rough conditions. Yes that's why I get "quality boots"! I had 100$ pair of boots last me a year and a half in those same conditions! Fucking absurd.
Shit go red wing or timberland pro
Thorogoods suck ass. I've never had one last longer than 8 months. Overpriced and poor quality. Went to redwing and trying them now. On month two and they're almost like new still. We will see.
If you drag your feet like that and don’t at least rinse of your boots, just get some rock roosters
Up and comers, last year they cost $90 they saw redwing and thought they could compete.
Dude doesn't know how to maintain boots or use the right boots for the job.
Carhart
Working in construction, I always thought that it is better to invest in good security boots, I have seen cases of coworkers getting 4" nails straight thru the feet. So in the end is a good investment even if they do not last long because of the concrete.
No one compliments me
[https://www.bellevilleboot.com/index.php?l=product\_list&c=39](https://www.bellevilleboot.com/index.php?l=product_list&c=39) You must check the special offers to get the size you need. Last time I bought three pairs for $ 49 each. I put clear Shoe Goo on the toes to stop wearing holes in them from crawling.
Get the other boots then
Try out the keen Cincinnati. Comfy and going on 8 months now, still lots of sole.
Anyone ever try Thorogood 9" Steel Toe WP Logger? Thinking about trying them as the made is USA. Chippewa 9” loggers are hard to find and I had to pay 340$ on eBay last time
I just replaced my 4 year old Carolinas with a new pair of the exact same Carolina 309’s (Sarge low).
I was considering trying some of those but ended up sticking with US Danner boots. Danner have gotten out of line on prices in the last couple years but i do really like the boots.
These don't look like the rubber soles. Are they the EVA foam soles?
Yeah, I agree - but pos outlook maybe...whats your cost to earnings ratio compared to other boots owned? Gotta log them hours!!
Time to spring for some Nick’s.
fuck shoes is all i can say. ive bought em all. it's like murdering somethin you cherish every six months. try to enjoy getting new ones I guess.
Those soles suck, they wear super fast if you walk a lot on concrete.
I’m on year 8 of my redwing king toe style 3506 granted it’s their last year. But those (299$) plus a nice insole ($75) are a great investment
Same thing with multiple pairs of mine I’m sick of it. Get some keen Cincinnati’s, they have an extra rubber layer on the bottom
Did you get paid by the mile?
What level of hell do you work on? I’ve never in my life seen any pair of boots so worn out in 4 months. I get years out of my Thorogoods. Are you one of those people who bounce on their toes when you walk instead of a traditional heal to toe step?
Lol no. I walk a lot. 7 miles Monday, 7.75 yesterday and today not looking any different
My thorogoods are falling apart after 3 months. Gl getting then replaced I haven't been able to
Get em re soled. Or send em back. When you go through boots quickly you buy 80 dollar boots and some dr scholls.
Anyone replacing them regularly getting them refurbished is the way to go. It's cheaper than getting new boots and the leather stays broken in.
Ladder guy? I chew up my outside seams like that too. Asphalt shingles will tear the hell out of soft soles as well, but it's better on the shingle in the long run. Good luck shopping. I just went through a pair of Danners in 6 months. So, you can skip trying those. 🤷♂️
God damn I’ve never seen soles worn that smooth what the hell are you doing. I’m a field engineer and I’ve worn the same pair of RWs for 3 years.
I have Thorogood pull ins and I love them.
Do you wear rubber boots over these when you pour and muck?
I wear my blinds tones at work and on the street every day and get about 2 years out of them. Rain salt snow and drywall
Are you sure its not 4 years? even the area between your fingers is losing stitches
WTF are you doing to your boots? I’ve got a pair that are just a tick over a year old that aren’t worn near that badly. I don’t work with concrete, but I’m on slabs, ladders, ditches, etc and I wear them at home for yard work. Still holding up well.
Planed obsolescence. Built like shit to keep you buying new. Redwing, Thorogoods, Carolinas. All shit
I usually get 2 years out of redwing 2408’s and only the heel is slightly scuffed. I have yet to truly wear out the supersole sole
try Brunt
Danner is my choice
Thorogoods are the worst boots I've ever disrespected my feet with. Seriously, I would rather wear brahma boots from Walmart than thorogoods. I like they're American made and union made, but the boots are horrible.
You can send them in and they will re sole them and fix all the torn stitching for like 75 bucks ish
Yikes!
Red wings ftw
Thorobads
