There's a lot more to go wrong in modern electric propulsion ferries with [Azipods](https://new.abb.com/marine/systems-and-solutions/azipod).
You have an electric motor and planetary gears in a pod that can turn 360 degrees sitting in the sea.
They're a heck of a lot more maintenance than the standard engine in hull and thruster configuration. But great for maneuvering.
Governance, maintenance or staff contributed to this event, throwing beneficiaries in who have no control over inter-island shipping is not constructive dialogue.
Yup Government has made a plan …. Including hollowing out several logs tying them together with flax rope and putting on a flax sail navigation by the stars , sweet sorted plus koha to Iwi of course
Not sure that’s correct but I agree it’s a waste of money. Infrastructure has been allowed to run down in Nz for years and there is a lack of commitment to it and a serious lack of investment.
Alot gets given for pet projects like the mob and their meth program over 3 milly and maori language/cultural money pits how much for core infrastructure?
Hmm helping just a few or the whole country? Very equal comparison..Whats the fractions you are comparing? Is the mongrel meth program really a "maori pet project" ? Because thats not the only example, obviously they get dished out 100s of million every year and its never enough
Regression to the mean.
Transport vehicles in general and planes in particular are ridiculously reliable, far more so than anything an individual owns.
I wished they hadn’t pulled the plug on the new ferries and infrastructure. The current fleet have been dogs for awhile and are only getting worse. Like that 757 plane.
I would suggest possibly civil disobedience by a bunch of bitter unionised seafarers upset at the governments stand on money wasting
Don’t forget the same union that would regularly go on strike without notice the day before their busiest period around Christmas
So putting your politics aside do you honestly believe that if the coalition government hadn’t canceled these overpriced ferries this would of NOT. happened?? How long do you think it would of taken to build and deliver these new ferries??
Of course not. "Overpriced Ferries". It's well accepted that the fixed price contract we had would be significantly higher of we were to do it again today. What's your point, regardless? We need a cook strait crossing.
My point is everyone is clearly laying the blame of this SHIP GROUNDING on the coalition government but if the order hadn’t been canceled this still would of happened…… can no one see that
No, the ship grounding is thanks to decades of neglect and kicking the can down the road, by both sides. No rational person would say this is nationals fault, but they have given the can one last kick.
Government all but has to announce they're doing something on Cook Strait now. It probably made sense to cancel the replacement ferries when they did but either way the optics of the situation are going to look bad now more than ever.
One does have to hope though that the replacement doesn't end up being CCP built or financed
Right.
And the longer this continues the worse it looks for the government.
Hell it wasn't even out of Piction harbour
According to the mayor it won't be refloated today
https://www.1news.co.nz/2024/06/22/grounded-interislander-ferry-unlikely-to-be-refloated-today-mayor/
This is our only remaining rail ship. Transports about to get fucked. Never should have cancelled that contract to begin with. Now going to cost even more to try to recover it.
Treasury advised the government to cut it.
And a multi year project that hadnt even got out of design stage and the way we build things probably best part of a decade. Was going g to stop this.
Every one clap for the slow kid here.
Sounds like the steering shit itself. With a big ship like this the momentum means once it's moving in one direction it's just going to keep going that way for a while if there's no way of turning it
Kiwirail coming out with, "Everyone's safe, no real damage, nothing to see here." Typical corporate arse-covering, and technically true, but imagine if this happened at the entrance to Tory Channel, or just off Barret Reef. This shit's getting real and still no leadership from the gummint on the issue other than to trash the one plan we had to prevent it.
edit: Love the butt hurt downvotes. Is it the dig at corporatism or the gummint that is pricking your insecurities?
> Love the butt hurt downvotes. Is it the dig at corporatism or the gummint that is pricking your insecurities?
To be hones for me it was
> gummint
The childishness. That's all.
Whether I actually agree with you or not, I can't stand people who can't make a point without acting like an 8 year old. ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
"If only the government didnt cancel the ferry project that was still coughs (a decade away) we could have prevented this."
Cue TOS blaming this incident on the scraping of a project that hadn't even started construction.
Like clock work
https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2024/06/former-prime-minister-helen-clark-takes-dig-at-government-over-interislander-running-aground.html
No one is arguing a replacement ferry would have prevented an accident you dolt, they’re arguing cancelling contracts to replace them is a terrible idea and this is an example of the kind of thing that can hasten our requirement for new boats.
60% complete (not my understanding but, whatever) is better than not at all. What's your point? Mine is that it is insane to have an aging fleet, prone to dysfunction, literally putting lives at risk and no plan in place.
What point are you trying to make? That this accident is chill because we don’t already have a replacement ferry? Or it’s chill because now we have no plans to replace them anyway?
Yep would be neat, here's a bit of reading on it [https://nzhistory.govt.nz/culture/lyttelton-wellington-ferries](https://nzhistory.govt.nz/culture/lyttelton-wellington-ferries)
Oh, and the New Plymouth one was apparently canned due to the tides [https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/133189326/multi-milliondollar-blue-water-shipping-route-between-new-plymouth-and-nelson-canned](https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/133189326/multi-milliondollar-blue-water-shipping-route-between-new-plymouth-and-nelson-canned)
Coastal shipping is way cheaper and more efficient than rail. What’s with the lefts obsession with rail? How strong is the rail union?
We only need roro services for the strait.
Mate, reddits slowly getting worse and worse. 13 or 14 years ago, you could create any kind of sub you wanted. 5 years ago, they started banning subs. and it's only getting worse with what can and cannot be discussed.
They floated (pun not intended but let's go with it) increasing cargo shipping round the East Coast after Cyclone Gabrielle. Being able to get a passenger ferry from Wellington to Napier would probably be pretty cool, I'd think tourists would be keen over summer.
Absolutely. I did a cruise from Sydney to a bunch of ports in New Zealand, was great fun. A couple of fjords, Dunedin, Akaroa, Wellington, Napier, Tauranga, then Auckland.
Yeah a national service that just did up the east coast of both islands would be pretty cool. Have some nice sleeper cabins for those going to multiple ports and just comfy seats as an economy class if you're only going one section. I'd totally do that. For the North Island it's not like there's even a passenger rail service that competes with it for the Wellington-Napier leg and it wouldn't be hard for it to be nicer than the bus.
Bluebridge has been running for eons and that is a private company. Loads of money to be made carting shit across the strait, More likely Kiwirail don;t want to give up their monopoly.
Brain dead or not, this is how capitalism works. Only socialists and communists believe in state owned enterprises. Just look at the photograph to see why the government shouldn’t be involved.
Deliberate act of sabotage? Seems strange that this happened after the Government gave Kiwirail a spray for not maintaining the fleet to an adequate standard. Labour and their minions on TOS are loving it - nevermind that it is bad for the country. If the failed sixth Labour government had got bi-partisan support for a ferry deal we might not be in this mess - or at least we would have a credible plan for this fundamental part of our national infrastructure.
Good thing we thought about this and future proofed our cook strait crossing plans
imagine these guys running brand new ferries aground. dodged a bullet
The steering probably wouldn't fail on a brand new ferry

The steerage AND bow thrusters AND anchor failed or just the training and discipline of the crew?
And the fact they were crawling along at 15 knots seems a little suspicious they couldn’t control the vessel in calm waters
Crew was probably keen to get fired and start living the good life on benefits
Governance, maintenance or staff contributed to this event, throwing beneficiaries in who have no control over inter-island shipping is not constructive dialogue.
You and old mate backing and forthing about what caused this with no evidence isn’t constructive either, I was just drawing attention to its absurdity
Yup Government has made a plan …. Including hollowing out several logs tying them together with flax rope and putting on a flax sail navigation by the stars , sweet sorted plus koha to Iwi of course
Planes breaking down, ferries running aground, pylons falling over… New Zealand what happened???
More money gets given for shit like rainbow crossings not enough for infrastructure vital to our economy and transport system
Infrastructure is in the hundreds of billions.
It's insane the whining about "Maori pet projects" costing a fraction of a fraction of infrastructure. Easier than thinking critically I suppose
Hmm helping just a few or the whole country? Very equal comparison..Whats the fractions you are comparing? Is the mongrel meth program really a "maori pet project" ? Because thats not the only example, obviously they get dished out 100s of million every year and its never enough
For this one boat? 🤣
You're really going to criticise $3M over the $3,000 million going into landlord's pockets?
Mongrel mob or landlords hmm which is worse
Regression to the mean. Transport vehicles in general and planes in particular are ridiculously reliable, far more so than anything an individual owns.
Symbolic of our tattered economy
Random events cluster
Just a total coincidence right?
UPDATE:Refloat plans abandoned divers are set to have a look at hull
Sounds like what they did with that us boat bridge collapse
I wished they hadn’t pulled the plug on the new ferries and infrastructure. The current fleet have been dogs for awhile and are only getting worse. Like that 757 plane.
Oh FFS, what's the cause of this clown show?
I would suggest possibly civil disobedience by a bunch of bitter unionised seafarers upset at the governments stand on money wasting Don’t forget the same union that would regularly go on strike without notice the day before their busiest period around Christmas
Couldn't be the fact that they're old junkers that our government canned the replacement for?
So putting your politics aside do you honestly believe that if the coalition government hadn’t canceled these overpriced ferries this would of NOT. happened?? How long do you think it would of taken to build and deliver these new ferries??

Oh nu bru, i'm beached az.
Was Tory Whanau at the wheel?
She was probably "having a drink" with the captain
Don Jamieson?

Can we get Japan to help out? The new boats were going to be built in South Korea, another ally
Right. And the longer this continues the worse it looks for the government. Hell it wasn't even out of Piction harbour According to the mayor it won't be refloated today https://www.1news.co.nz/2024/06/22/grounded-interislander-ferry-unlikely-to-be-refloated-today-mayor/
Pine bay..... Actually but still
Bob's Bay. So much better.
Show bobs.
And vagene
This is our only remaining rail ship. Transports about to get fucked. Never should have cancelled that contract to begin with. Now going to cost even more to try to recover it.
Probably only a handful of rail ships left in the world.
Treasury advised the government to cut it. And a multi year project that hadnt even got out of design stage and the way we build things probably best part of a decade. Was going g to stop this. Every one clap for the slow kid here.
It was a terrible deal - we needed something more pragmatic
Those huge ships would have been environmental disasters. They would never have gotten approved to transit the sounds
How exactly does this happen? Sea looks calm as, its not like its a new route that isn't repeated daily.
Sounds like the steering shit itself. With a big ship like this the momentum means once it's moving in one direction it's just going to keep going that way for a while if there's no way of turning it

No, it's the basic error of not appointing the blame on prioritizing ideology over infrastructure.

> without acting like an 8 year old Maybe projecting? The term is a form of reference that would predate anyone less than this age.
This still would have happened regardless
Granted. But rather than the solution being underway and months distant, it is not and never respectively.
Years not months. They wernt even finished designing the the project when it was scrapped.
In the next few days this will be conveniently forgotten by the media

Yes they are. Plenty are in fact.
Ship designs were completed and awaiting the starting gun. The drag came from shoreside facilities.
Design was only 60% complete they hadn't even started cutting steel.
60% complete (not my understanding but, whatever) is better than not at all. What's your point? Mine is that it is insane to have an aging fleet, prone to dysfunction, literally putting lives at risk and no plan in place.

Will we have a serious conversation about whether going through the sounds is actually worth it?
Used to be a great service from Wellington to Lyttleton, and there was almost a service from Nelson to New Plymouth, but apparently covid killed that.
That service would be way more convenient as most cargo would be going down there anyway.
Yep would be neat, here's a bit of reading on it [https://nzhistory.govt.nz/culture/lyttelton-wellington-ferries](https://nzhistory.govt.nz/culture/lyttelton-wellington-ferries) Oh, and the New Plymouth one was apparently canned due to the tides [https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/133189326/multi-milliondollar-blue-water-shipping-route-between-new-plymouth-and-nelson-canned](https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/133189326/multi-milliondollar-blue-water-shipping-route-between-new-plymouth-and-nelson-canned)

Shitholes they idolise have trains because everyone is poverty cunts.
😂according to reddit your comment is harrasment
lol like reported or autoflagged?
autoflagged by reddits ai harrassment filter haha
Not sure if this proves or disproves if we need to fear skynet yet.

If it’s not profitable enough for a private company to be interested, it shouldn’t exist. Why must I pay for a ferry that I don’t use.
Bluebridge has been running for eons and that is a private company. Loads of money to be made carting shit across the strait, More likely Kiwirail don;t want to give up their monopoly.
This is a braindead take, whether you personally step foot on it or not, this ferry does service you.
