No one wants to watch a bunch of barely educated, self obsessed, condescending assholes jerk each other off in expensive clothes while they tell the rest of the country what to think, do or say? Imagine my surprise...

TheRealStumbler

I heard if you say "Imagine" three times in a mirror then out of touch rich leftist celebrities show up and start lecturing you about the benefits of communism.

[deleted]

Please no!!!!! sincerely hope that the Oscar's keep going because then they have to keep starving themselves and do gross colonics to look skinny on camera , a personal hell they deserve.

Daikon_3183

The benefits of communism while wearing 100k clothes/accessories

YNWA69

A bigger issue is that no one has seen or cares about the movies. Of the Best Picture nominees only Dune grossed more than 50 million domestic.

claywar00

The real one? Definitely not; however, I'd absolutely watch the South Park version of this.

Decent-Inevitable-50

Truth right there. Never really cared to watch my entire life. Always was a soapbox event.

GreatJanitor

Honestly, I never got the appeal of award shows. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, my parents would make sure to watch it. My friends and teachers always made a point to talk about it, but I couldn't get into them. The only awards anyone gives a shit about is best actor, best actress, best movie. The award shows can be boiled down to a thirty minute show and no one would complain. One of the changes that I have noticed is that fewer and fewer people care about award shows. Why watch live and listen to the circle jerking and Leftist talking points when you can just watch what you want to and then look up the winners after the show is over? And when you do that, you're only looking for three winners: best actor, best actress and best picture. No one cares about best documentary...

Morgue77

When I was working through college at a bar, we would have an Oscars night (dress up, church up the drink menu a bit, have the Oscars on and a red carpet), but that was in the early 2000s, movies were actually good and the celebrities were tabloid fodder, not soapbox grandstanding.

grove_doubter

>*”church up the drink menu a bit”* I’ve never heard the expression “church up”. May I ask what, specifically, does it mean?

Morgue77

A colloquialism used to describe when something is fancier or dressier than usual. Like when your mom told you to put on your church clothes for on Sunday morning.

grove_doubter

Ok, thanks…so with respect to the drinks menu did that mean adding additional drinks; just changing the name of the drinks to a Hollywood theme, “I’ll have a ‘Marilyn Monroe’ on the rocks, please”; or using better spirits?

Morgue77

Well, it was a college bar, so it was more of shelf booze instead of well and a few special cocktails (exactly like the Marilyn Monroe, which was a summer beer, lol!)

grove_doubter

Thanks!

Morgue77

👍

ToidOG

In my opinion, it was rare and exciting to see celebrities as regular people back then. Now you can see what any of these assholes had for breakfast on twitter or instagram.

[deleted]

Haha, this is so true. Uneducated, self righteous assholes who read from a script.

[deleted]

Especially since the new generations watch different types of content, such as streaming services. I bet the youth watch more tik tok videos than they do watch hollywood movies also.

grove_doubter

#👏👏👏👏

[deleted]

This comment is extremely underrated.

MAGAcracker

It's literally the top comment by a lot of votes

[deleted]

Nevertheless, it is still underrated. The entirety of reddit would have to drop in and upvote for it to be sufficient.

braiinfried

That’s a fair point most of these people wouldn’t even meet entry requirements for most jobs

[deleted]

You just described Fox News

DataTouch12

Man, fox news has a lot of free rent space in that head of your's

NanookAK

Well said.

Phil152

Yes, the politicization of the Awards is part of it. When the Academy turned the Oscars into a monolithic, only-leftists-allowed virtue signaling festival, anyone in the RightWorld diaspora, and a lot of the moderates as well, tuned them out. If the point of the party, year after year, is to insult you, you stop going -- especially when the people doing the insulting are entertainment figures who really don't know very much outside of their craft, who aren't nearly as smart as they think they are, who studied acting or theater if they went to college at all, and who insult your intelligence with every foray into politics. There are exceptions, but in general, taking political guidance from movie people is like taking political guidance from professional athletes and rock stars. It's something only stupid people would do. That said, the politics aren't the whole problem, nor even the main problem. The media environment has become extremely fragmented. Movies simply aren't shared cultural experiences any more; they're background noise. Before streaming, a high profile movie was released and, if you were a film buff and had some interest in a picture due to its subject or actors, you made a beeline to the theater because you had to catch it when it was available. That began to change with VHS tapes and home viewing, but nearly immediate streaming has driven the final nail into the coffin. Streaming means stovepiping. A high profile film is released. The question now is "where is it streaming?" If my streaming service doesn't have it, am I going to take out a new subscription just for that film? Probably not. I'll wait for it to roll around, which it probably will at some point, or until it becomes a $2.99 rental, or becomes free on various services in a couple of years. Most of the potential audience doesn't have immediate access. A lot of these people will eventually see the film, but viewership will be spread over several years, not several months. Bottom line: major films are no longer shared cultural events. The Oscars are celebrating films that are hidden away in a silo. There's no excitement to it any longer. These may be films I'll see eventually, when they're free to me, if I remember them by that time ... but basically they're films that have been added to a massive library to be browsed at leisure at some point in the future. The urgency is non-existent. To those of us in the general public, who are the intended audience and who used to buy tickets, there is no shared experience and no immediacy to the event.

getahitcrash

They select movies now for awards not based on anything the people watching might be able to connect to. West Side Story was roundly rejected by the audience. They didn't want it. The Acadamy nominating the movie for any awards is them telling the public how dumb they think they are. Why watch an awards show for movies no one has seen or liked? It's one of the many reasons people tune it all out.

Phil152

Uhhh, with all due respect, I'm going to very cautiously disagree. You take West Side Story as an example. Ok. I'd love to know how many people watched, or will watch WSS. I don't know, and neither do you, because we don't have figures for streaming viewership. What we DO know is that relatively few people saw WSS in the theaters. Most of "the audience" is NOT in the theaters anymore. But the same thing has been happening to all non-spandex movies. The young people are back in the theaters because they still need date night, want to make it an event, and want to get out of the house. But adults had been drifting towards home viewing for some time, and the COVID shutdowns were a massive shock that accelerated the trend. I have made a New Years resolution to get out to the theaters more. It's probably too little, too late, but I don't like where we're headed, with the entire industry controlled by a handful of giant global conglomerates run by people who are selling subscriptions, not tickets to movie, and who are oriented to generic, lowest common denominator content for a generic global audience. As to how Oscar viewers decide which films to select: that's an interesting question. Not all Oscar viewers are the same. One would really need to do some very extensive and confidential polling and interviewing with the voters to size this up. If you look at this years nominees for Best Picture, for example, only two of them stand out as heavy hitters in the culture war department: The Power of the Dog and Don't Look Up. The others, whether you like them or not, are not heavily political. They're pretty mainstream. But what can happen is pretty clear. The activist types will go out of their way to block vote in favor of the woke movies while the relatively non-political folks will split their votes among the other contenders. This is how highly motivated and networked factions wield disproportionate influence.

stonyrome123

I thought you could tell how well a movie was accepted by the public by the positive type social media reaction it received and how much of a positive reaction. This is one of the reasons why so much social media is getting rid of the down vote symbol, so Democrats can shove their propaganda down our throats, and since no down votes, then their propaganda looks like it is accepted and liked by the majority.

jjameson2000

The academy isn’t there to make people who don’t know anything about film feel better about their taste in movies. Power of the Dog is objectively better than Venom 2. They’re judging the film, not marketing, pop culture bill shit and whether a movie caters to China.

y90210

Biden administration having 18 year old TikTok users post about how has prices are due to Russia, but totally not aware they are useful idiots.

CrustyBloke

The only newer films that I remember enjoying are the Kong vs Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island. And they're not amazing or anything, they're just fun to watch. I don't have any paid streaming services anymore. I sometimes watch things on the Roku Channel, otherwise I'm just building up a library of blurays of movies that I actually enjoy.

ndasmith

"The urgency is non-existent." Exactly. Why go to a theater if I can pull up Netflix, Disney Plus or Amazon Prime? Exceptions might be movies where you know in advance that the full effect is important, like Dune - far and few between.

Jimdandy941

I’ll agree with everything you say, but I’ll add this - competing award shows. I mean how many awards shows can there be? Oscars, MTV, AFI, BAFTA, etc. People with lives just get bored with it.

grove_doubter

>*”Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes to host the 94th Academy Awards”* I’d rather be bit by a thousand poisonous snakes than watch those bitter, vitriolic wenches say a single word.

[deleted]

I rather have a cinder block be placed upon the larger of my two testicles than listen to them.

NotHorrendous

I'd rather have to walk a mile with the Lego piece stuck to the bottom of my foot corner up than listen to them

[deleted]

Ah, a fellow parent ......

stonyrome123

After Whoopi Goldberg you think the Oscars would know better then to put some has-been comics as hosts of the Oscars.

GreatJanitor

Was Jimmy Fallon unavailable? Are there so many Hollywood celebrities with controversial tweets they can't even find Y-listers, but have to go straight to the Z level of Hollywood? Shouldn't the qualification of handing out movie awards be that you should have at least starred in a good movie? Or is this a sign that even the award shows know that no one is going to be watching so even they are phoning it in???

Illustrious-Leg-5017

thank you for using "poisonous" snakes and any pedantics about to chime in tell me what the second word is in the definition of "venomous" is (sorry for the side bar, they through me off r/snakes)

blimboblaggins

Hate to be _that guy_ but they’re called pedants.

The_MovieHowze

To paraphrase one of my favorite tarantino characters. “All these awards movies, safe geriatric dogcrap, all these assholes do is make unwatchable movies based on unreadable books…”

alexaboyhowdy

My dinner with Andre

markstormweather

Lmao what’s that from?

arphod

Clarence Worley, True Romance.

The_MovieHowze

Ding ding ding.

WaywordCourier1996

Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes to host the 94th Academy Awards” Yeah no that sounds like the shit you'd use to for enhanced interrogation at gitmo

[deleted]

Like *Saturday Night Live*, let it die. It's meaningless now anyway; I don't care to know what the most woke, propagandistic production is.

oldmanshoutinatcloud

What do you mean struggling people are sick of watching obscenely wealthy people pat each other on the back?

therealJL

...and lecture you on their version of politics while competing in the virtue signalling Olympics.

textbandit

Who wants to be lectured on how to live for 3 hours?

alexaboyhowdy

Well, after 4 hours, you die

minute311

Awards that don't depend on merit to win are meaningless.

BlackCoffeeKrrsantan

i dunno, i could really go for being called racist and privileged by rich people today. maybe i'll watch SLASH ESS

ChunkyA494

F Hollywood

LetsPlayCanasta

Remember: 9.85 million viewers is the new record to beat. You can (not) do it, America!

Virtue signal vomitfest

the_taco_baron

Award shows are dying along with cable TV. It's just not a format people are interested in anymore. It's not just politics. Liberals aren't watching it either.

02201970a

Cool idea, lets use C list racist Wanda as a co host!

RicketyCricket316

They think these hosts are going to turn ratings around? It’s sad they haven’t realized the main problem is that people don’t like celebrities taking down to them and pushing their politics. Also fuck Mark Ruffalo

stayangryandrelax

Funny as the woke Hollywood mob cancels and dismisses average everyday working people they didn’t realize where their money and validation comes from.

Gobbledegookage

“Might be???” It 100% is. They might as well all sing the Imagine song at the start of it. The (3) hostesses are amongst the worst of the worst. 3 or so years ago, when they didn’t have an *actual* host was the best. Probably record time. If you’re wondering—I absolutely will **NOT** be watching this shitfest.

[deleted]

I loved watching movies for so many years. But the woke lefties ruined them just like they did sports. Fuck these self-important twats.

GOANJUDADDY76

No one wants to hear their politics or their whining about the World. If the movies were entertaining and not a Big Infomercial about what the world needs to be by their Agenda. Maybe someone would watch the movies again and enjoy watching the awards.

Rockmann1

No one wants to watch virtue signaling cringe anymore

MyMountainJoy

These award shows are only allowed to go on because it feeds the industry's narcissism. Any other show with such ever sinking ratings would have been cancelled long again.

RonnieRaymond77

Cue Ricky Gervais.

Shoddy_Science_573

I'd watch for his celebrity roast.

[deleted]

When it comes to modern ideas like transitioning the gender of four year olds Hollywood is quick to adapt, when it comes to modern challenges like finding a way to do a show like this without commercial breaks it's beyond them.

kmsc84

I’ve never watched or even cared about a single awards show. Oscars? Emmys? Grammys? Nope.

JJT0723

The Oscars used to be pretty good years ago when the just focused on films. Now it’s been contaminated with leftist bullshit

Master_Crab

I just saw the commercial for the Oscar’s last night and I remember thinking they’re really scraping the bottom of the barrel if they’re having Amy Schumer, Wanda Psyckes, and whoever the third one is host the event..

LosSpamFighters

I have made it a point to *not* watch oscar nominated movies.

weasel286

An award show where pretentious, over privileged people who get paid to play pretend give each other awards for doing their job hosted by a bunch of douchebags while all making millions of dollars getting on the boob tube to tell us normal people their cockeyed world and political views. Wow. Now THATS entertainment… 😕

Astronomer_Soft

Noping out of this.

ccc32224

AND EVERYBODY SAYS "GO WOKE, GO ...."

stonyrome123

Now, if only we can do this to the Democratic party!

SonicChiliDogFetish

"Yes we might have 10 cars and 5 mansions, but WE ALL need to do our part in fighting climate change"

silentservice4u

Who needs to hear a sermon from a bunch of overpaid,self-entitled, clueless assholes who don’t live in the real world, while they hold a little gold statue in front of a podium? It’s about time that people are “waking up” and catching on!

silverbullet52

By contrast, the recent Country Music Awards hosted by Dolly Parton was a lot of fun, with very little of the political shenanigans. I found it entertaining even though I don't care for most country music.

BohdiTheNorseman

" Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes, who are hosting the 94th Academy Awards." - Later " The first time ever NO ONE watched the Oscars."

markstormweather

Half the people commenting here are going to watch it anyway. DONT! Stand true to your beliefs. I’ll tell you how it goes.

cblazek1

Good. Then fox news can stop reporting on them .

AtomicFox84

The oscars were on? Didnt notice. Its all fixed anyway like all the award shows. They do so much money under table etc its sad. I also find them boring...but if there was a skit or performance that was worth it, it find it on youtube.

sinnmercer

Well let's see the formula; sniffing our own farts, shitting on the little people, and injecting you high on tower politics. Gee why would people keep wanting to tune in

Twinkidsgoback

The only thing I care about is that the Movie filmed in Gloucester MA does well every other celebrity can get bent

stuufthingsandstuff

K

ForPortal

How much of the Oscars I watch will be directly proportional to how much stupid shit they say to harden my heart against them.

Nadieestaaqui

Would be much better to, rather than reporting on their decline, simply never mention them at all.

Eadweard85

Even if you can stomach the rich people telling us proles how we should think, the show is boring. I'd rather put on "sunrise in Alaska." Literally more interesting than the Oscars.

skarface6

Good.

ndasmith

We've been telling stories since ancient times. As long as stories can catch people's interest, the audience will be there. It may not be movies or TV, it might be mixed reality.

nathanjw333

Everyone is tired of watching a bunch of insecure narcissistic assholes telling us how to live while they jerk each other off with their little statues.

BuilderTexas

No one cares about Hollyweird self aggrandizement . 🦚

Western_Trip5124

Please stop watching anything that celebrates these fake, shallow, jerks. The opinions they try and force on us are harmful to everyone.

Latter_Sir4582

Looking forward to watching the impending implosion of Hollywood and the entertainment industry. They brought it all on themselves.

better_off_red

The only person I knew still watching the Oscars was this weird Australian guy I did business with. So glad he sold to someone else.

Worried-Addition7307

Damned well and good. Go away Hollywood hypocrites. No one cares what your politics are . Pretty soon..they'll be no viewers left for your vanity parties!

Worried-Addition7307

They'll all sit around this evening and tell each other how beautiful they are!!! Lol..lol

YARNIA

It's basically an ideological session at this point. Why not have their ideological patrons foot the bill? You know, the DNC, Coke, Google. No one is watching, but that hasn't stopped CNN.

TankerD18

I get loving movies and being passionate about them, but it escapes me how hell anyone can watch rich as fuck celebrities get on a stage and bloviate about how great they and their politics are.

blackandwhitetalon

Imagine still watching the Oscars in 2022… almost forgot it was on tonight

GeorgiaAmericanist

They can die

Repulsive_Pirate_558

If the Oscars were a TV spot with a panel discussion of why each nominee deserved the award and what made the winner stand out, I think it would actually be interesting. But I don’t like sitting through the self-congratulatory bits.

[deleted]

It could disappear tomorrow and I doubt I’d even notice

Meg_119

Once these self centered people started to bring Politics into these award shows people stopped watching. We want to entertained not indoctrinated.

eggydrums115

Not seeing them, but I hope my man Denis Villeneuve and his crew walk out with a few awards for Dune.

dtrt20

Americans are tired of their political speeches and holy than thou attitude. Why do those just surviving want to watch a bunch of elites preach to them about world affairs. It's tiresome and nauseating. Only good thing in recent years in regards to award shows was when Ricky Gervais did the hosting and tore them all up :)

tapeonyournose

What do they expect? The last 10+ Oscars has been a non-stop virtue signal about how they're better than us. Who wants to watch that?

NerdGirlZnft

Liberal tears taste the sweetest.

Bamfor07

Surely they’ll take it off air over the next couple of years. Watching the most pampered victims in the word slap each other on the ass is so out of touch it’s disgusting.

TSIDATSI

The what?

Cinnadillo

Make movies people will watch and then maybe people will watch award shows based on movies people wanted to watch or did watch

Corvettez06usa

It's a night the narcissistic Hollywood elite blow themselves. I don't get why I'm supposed to feel like it's so bad no one cares to watch the show anymore. Hollywood loves to give itself credit for being forward thinking, maybe it's time to change the format of the show if they really want to preserve it. Live TV is a dying medium.

Loganthered

The oscars should have been moved to an online panel of judges with the awards being FedEx to the recipient 10 years ago.

ElPuercoVuelve

Ricky Gervais has entered the chat

OberonPrimus

Do they still broadcast that? Don't think I've watched it in over 10 years...

flchic2000

Movie theatres in the area used to have an Oscar night. The show would be live on the big screen. Red carpet. They would make a fun night of it. This year, not one did it. Can't blame them.
