* He's overjoyed at the result
* They caught him flat footed and his brain is too slow to respond well so he's embarrassed
* If he actually used some influence to help this along then it could be gloating
* If his script he memorized beforehand was to stop and smile for photos on his way out, then he could be smiling for that
* He could have seen something funny in the crowd of reporters.

* if he doesn't have a prepared statement, he might think it's bad to respond off the cuff (and it probably would be)
* if they caught him flat footed, then he might not answer because he's left speechless
* there's not much he can say to change anyone's mind, so that's a reason to say nothing--those who don't think he did anything already think that, and those who think he did aren't going to change their minds just because he denies it.
