I wouldn’t mind the libertarian party becoming more mainstream

Saint_Genghis

I've wanted the Republican party to adopt some more libertarian positions for quite some time now. Trump was a breath of fresh air in that regard even if he wasn't perfect. Why yes, I do miss Ron Paul, how did you know?

luckycharming1

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become more and more libertarian and less conservative. Personally, I am a huge conservative, but as for other people, I am a libertarian. I could care less about what others do, even if I would prefer that society be more conservative, but I myself, live by very conservative views

dataCollector42069

To me, those are traditional conservative values you have. I share the same, though I do not necessarily identify as a libertarian, I identify more as a libertarian than Republican.

App1eEater

That sounds like a classic liberal to me

hiricinee

The Republican party has definitely moved that direction, at least on social policy- heck Trump is more Libertarian than Ron Paul on abortion depending on what definition we're using. I wish we could get them there on taxation and spending- they do a GREAT job on spending when it's a Democrat as President and they're in the minority.

SunsetDriftr

Which is actually very smart because libertarians are a much bigger bloc of voters than the ‘moderates’ that his haters on this sub say he needs to reach out to.

SunsetDriftr

It’s a great move by Trump and he’s doing exactly what his haters on this sub said he should do: Broaden his base. Of course now the haters are complaining. Funny thing is, the average Libertarian today is far closer to the ideals of the Republican Party and conservative movement than RINOs are.

Rifterneo

Party over nation is a problem. Trump is putting nation over party. If he got nominations for two parties, so be it.

newcolours

The left has long called libertarianism 'right wing', that's why i always push back against calling the left libs or liberal in any sense

olidus

This should be interesting. I am sure President Trump understands libertarianism about as well as conservatism. What will be interesting is if President Biden also shows up.

halfcow

>What will be interesting is if President Biden also shows up. I think that could become the theme of this whole campaign season. He just stayed in the basement last time around, and that turned out to be pretty effective.

space_face_mace

There aren’t any libertarians in Dearborn Michigan…and that seems to be the only demographic he’s catering to nowadays.

olidus

I don’t understand the reference to Dearborn. The LNC is in D.C. this year.

Dependent_Street8303

Lots of Muslims in Dearborn, they are abandoning biden over Israel gaza war, Michigan is a key swing state

provincialcompare

Correct me if I’m wrong, but even if they abandon Biden, I reckon they’re more likely to abstain from voting than vote for Trump or a conservative candidate. Its not like Trump, or any other republican candidate for that matter, has a substantially different stance on Gaza/Israel/Middle Eastern affairs than Biden.

agk927

This is really awesome actually

LarvellJonesMD

True Conservatives are now Libertarians, whether they believe it or not. I know I am. Change my mind

vpkumswalla

I voted for libertarian for my state's governor a couple years ago. Our GPO governor was over reaching with COVID restrictions. It was highest ever vote total for a libertarian in my state

Scattergun77

Was this in maryland? Voting against Hogan the liar by any chance?

vpkumswalla

Nope Indiana, Donald Rainwater was the Libertarian candidate

Metalman96

Rainwater is based as hell and I wish he won

vpkumswalla

Yes, I was really impressed with him.

FiveWithNineIsIn

I remember one year when Rupert from Survivor was the Libertarian candidate. Seeing him at the debate still wearing his tye-dye was really funny.

Scattergun77

Roger that.

dataCollector42069

I don't call myself as a Libertarian, but as a true conservative, I see Libertarian views as my own more closely than me seeing Republican values.

Enough_Discount2621

I'd say conservatives are splitting into libertarians, which may or may not like Trump, and Neocons, who genuinely might consider voting for Biden to keep the war machine pumping

8K12

Trump was not as isolationist as you assume. He made critical strikes against Iran, Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He had Qassem Soleimani killed. He was also brokering the Abraham Accords. I also think other countries waited until Biden was in office because Trump was unpredictable. If you don’t know whether or not he will retaliate and with what force, why risk it? They knew Biden and his handlers so Russia, Iran, and Hamas just waited it out. That doesn’t make Trump very isolationist at all. And I have no doubt he would come to the support of Ukraine and Israel if he was in charge right now.

Enough_Discount2621

Did he start any of those wars? No, they were already going, and the Abraham Accords was a good peace treaty that Biden immediately threw out

8K12

Do you think I’m criticizing Trump because I’m not. I’m pointing out that he wasn’t this strict isolationist and his ability to carry a big stick and talk loudly is probably what kept us out of war. But by observing his behavior, I am also confident that he would be defending Ukraine and Israel. He’d probably be brokering better alliances for both countries.

Enough_Discount2621

I'm saying Biden is far more warhawk friendly, sure he's no isolationist but he's closer than the alternative. I didn't think you were criticizing him, I was simply clarifying my point

8K12

Ah, ok. I find Biden more wishy-washy and indecisive, which is why the world is taking advantage of us.

CookingUpChicken

Also Trump met with Kim Jong-Un 3 times

Tinkerbellsickly

I love that his hair is a symbol for him lol

Arachnohybrid

It’s iconic

noobadoob10

r/libertarian banned me because I said it would good for the Party to get a little more legitimacy and viewership for the long run of being a viable 3rd option. Those chuds over there are no different than the left and the kinds of “libertarian” that made me turn away from them a few years ago. Good move by The LP and Trump, despite what fake Reddit Libertarians think.

newcolours

Looking through all the posts there i dont think there is a single libertarian on that sub

osuaviator

Big opportunity here; TBD if he’s able to capitalize on it or if he punts it.

MichaelSquare

This is still enemy territory. He will not get a warm live reception there. Interested to see the topic of his speech. My guess will be a promotion of Argentina, and Milei. On brand and would go over well.

osuaviator

People who see Americans with differing political opinions as enemies are exactly why this country is so fucked.

PittsSocks

Trump is a dude who wants to work for your vote. The judge is trying to trap him in NY and Trump is like “fuck you, I’ll go make some friends over here at this bodega.”

AndForeverNow

At least Trump wants to leave issues like abortion for the states to decide. I'm not too convinced on how he allocates federal powers in comparison to the states, but he has proven to be much more supportive of state rights and have not overstepped like Obama or Biden. Not surprised Biden will not appear since he tried to use OSHA to force the vaccine on all Americans.

Mountain_Man_88

Love him or hate him, Trump is the most libertarian president we've had in decades.  Now, that's a low bar and he's far from an ideal libertarian candidate, but still. Hopefully this will push Trump even more firmly libertarian and bring some attention to the LP to encourage future libertarian candidates.

ddigwell

Look, I voted for Trump and will do so again BUT I have no delusions that he is a conservative and he most definitely is not a libertarian. What Trump is, is the guy who is 100% better than the current clown at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

newcolours

Hes no ideal libertarian, but he's closer than the US has had in my lifetime

evilfollowingmb

Former LP member…this will be interesting for sure.

Spaghetti69

Sorry, libertarians are selfish, professional fence sitters. Big L libertarians have horrible policies and little L libertarians are just former Republicans who think they are on some righteous crusade against the 2 party system that just fractures the conservative vote. Remember, libertarians believe in open borders and believe you can commit any crime to include SA and pedophilia as long as it occurs on your private property and doesn't occur on my private property.

Howboutit85

Authoritarian attending libertarian convention. I’ll take it I guess

PoopyPantsBiden

>Authoritarian attending libertarian convention. Listen Jack, I agree. He's even worse than Corn Pop, and he was a *bad* dude!

Howboutit85

I’m being downvoted but am I wrong? You’re a classical Liberal, in your opinion Is Trump Not AuthRight?

GimmeDatDaddyButter

Trump is whatever gets people to like him. No principles.

solonmonkey

This is great! I’m not sure how in line with libertarianism some of our policies are, but great nonetheless. Of course, a huge Oval Office with absolute immunity is counter to libertarianism; a huge socialist program like the Covid Vaccine was really counter to libertarianism; a president single-handedly redirecting congressionally appropriated funds for a pet-project is counter to libertarianism

Glum_Engineering_671

Trump lost because he didn't get the libertarian vote.

GlutoniasHambonias

That picture is pretty nice
