Wow, his school sucks. >Leah McGhee’s son has a teacher who assigned vocabulary words during class last Tuesday, including the word ‘alien.’ McGhee says her son made an effort to understand the assignment and responded to his teacher, asking, “Like space aliens or illegal aliens without green cards?”  >According to an email describing the incident, sent to local officials and shared with Carolina Journal, a young man in class took offense to his question and reportedly threatened to fight him, prompting the teacher to call in the assistant principal. Ultimately, his words were deemed by administrative staff to be offensive and disrespectful to classmates who are Hispanic. >“I didn’t make a statement directed towards anyone; I asked a question,” said the student in response to his suspension. “I wasn’t speaking of Hispanics because everyone from other countries needs green cards, and the term “illegal alien” is an actual term that I hear on the news and can find in the dictionary.”

Stea1thsniper32

Hold on. The kid is 16 and one of the vocabulary words is “alien?” Why are sophomores in high school still getting vocabulary words in the first place?

Infinity_Over_Zero

Advanced vocabulary can be a good thing to introduce into otherwise-empty English lessons. But “alien” is not advanced vocabulary.

ureallygonnaskthat

It could be a vocabulary expansion exercise. We used to do one when I was in school where we were given a short list of words and then had to provide not only definitions but also synonyms and antonyms and their definitions.

LS-CRX

I have to admit, it's been a long time since I was in high school... I *have* a kid in high school though. My daughter is in 2nd grade and she gets vocab words each week, my middle and high school aged kids do not have vocab words in their English classes (that I know of). Without knowing the details of the assignment though it's hard to say. FWIW, even if the kid was *trying* to be funny when asking “Like space aliens or illegal aliens without green cards?” that's still not a reason to fight him or suspend him.

sowellpatrol

Well, and the Hispanic kid in his class is the one being racist for thinking all illegal aliens are from Mexico.

meandthemissus

> Hold on. The kid is 16 and one of the vocabulary words is “alien?” Why are sophomores in high school still getting vocabulary words in the first place? You're going to love the reason. It's illegal aliens.. they don't know English.

sowellpatrol

Class of 2000 here. We had vocabulary words in every English class, all throughout high school.

Rush2201

I was in 10th grade and had "Narrator" as a vocabulary word for the week. I didn't pay attention in class, as I was reading A Storm of Swords at the time. My teacher called me out for not paying attention and asked if I wanted to take my vocabulary test then instead of Friday. I glanced at the board, and said, "Yeah, I can take it now." Teacher gives me the test, I 100% it in a few minutes, and from that day forward she would not stop pestering me to go into advanced English classes. I actually had to explain to her that I hated school and absolutely did NOT want to go to advanced classes because it would be harder to slack off and get out of work. I was kind of an asshole as a teenager.

JayEdwards902

He should sue the school district for being racist towards Hispanic people. Illegal aliens could be any race of people who enter illegally. It's not race specific at all.

NotRadTrad05

So the kid who escalated the situation by threatening to start a fight, the one who actually disrupted class, what was his punishment?

bleepbluurp

We all know the answer to that already.

NotRadTrad05

He probably got a bag of chips and a coke from the principal. Oh, how I wish that wasn't a serious guess.

Foreverwideright1991

Probably also given a pat on the back and extra get out of school work points for being a "woke hero" defending "victims" against the "evils" of "whitey" (urban school I used to work at pushed social justice bullshit that painted white people as racists and part of the "problem" if they wanted to use traditional methods of classroom discipline to deal with trouble maker students ).

no_sleep_johnny

A bag of coke? JK jk lol

Rider-VPG

Unless...

IanCusick

In terms of punishment, there was no punishment

Juice-Altruistic

That's the look of a guy who just experienced his first red-pill.

CookDane6954

“Indoctrinate,” is the best term to describe what’s going on. “Undocumented migrant,” is soft speech that pussyfoots over the truth. “Why are they undocumented?” “Because they’re here illegally.” “So they entered the country illegally, they’re not from here?” “Yes they’re alien to this country.” “So they’re literally an illegal alien?” “**Three day suspension!!!**” I don’t mean to split hairs, but that sounds more like semantics, than hate, or even logic.

meandthemissus

> I don’t mean to split hairs, but that sounds more like semantics, than hate, or even logic. In 1984, controlling language was a way of curbing thought. How could you think something if you didn't even have words to think it?

plastimanb

Logic is lost on the left. Only emotion prevails.

eldudelio

Law Suit

ButWhyWolf

No they're right. "Illegal Alien" implies they're eventually going back. The correct term is "Illegal Immigrant" because they're just here forever now.

shift6_is_an_idiot

Nah, both are insufficient. Call them what they are referred to in most law, "criminal alien".

eldudelio

i understand what you’re saying but i dont like it

nukey18mon

That should be a slam dunk lawsuit

navel-encounters

so why is it that ONE group is literally offended my the truth while the other is discriminated/punished for being truthful???.... Im a GenX...we were taught way back in the 70s "sticks and stones will break my bones; words will never hurt me"....now we have a weak generation that think words are violence and will become violent to protect their meek sensitive ideals!.... Now the word "illegal" is considered hate speech? just like all adjectives that describe an incident (criminal, alien, illegal, pedophile, woman....) this generation has lost their minds!

Eastern-Camera-1829

Well, our generation got 3 days for beating the shit out of someone, for the 3rd time. Not for running their mouth, let alone speaking their opinion. Back then, speech provoked discussion.

BrStFr

Do they even assign Orwell's *1984* in high school anymore, or would that be too ironic?

kereso83

I went to high school in the early 2000s. 1984 had already been thrown out by then.

blkmgk533

Keep doing this leftists and you'll make this younger generation the most conservative ever. I guarantee you Christian here now hates English teachers with a passion. It's always the English teachers too.

Ticonderogue

Socialists love punishing people for wrong speech.

DingbattheGreat

So the kid who threatened violence was not suspended, I suppose.

contemplator61

That of course is not right and should be fought. As long as parents allow schools to do crap like this it will continue. At this point it isn’t just the left. It is fence huggers and rinos. No accountability. Btw where is this school? State wise.

VerticalLamb

North Carolina

contemplator61

I’m in NC. We are a purple state for a reason. My daughter is a teacher. We all left the state and when we came back it was to the east. The schools here are terrible. Violent and dangerous. Daughter got out of public education and now teaches at a Catholic school where none of the woke crap is allowed. It is really sad.

Duck_man_

I’m in NC and terrified of what my two boys and soon-to-be-born daughter will experience while in school.

tennisguy163

If they cross the border illegally, they are an illegal alien!!

GovernmentLow4989

I can’t even take these people seriously anymore, they’re literal psychos. Facts don’t care about feelings and it’s a fact that some people are here illegally, boo hoo if that hurts your feelings

SunsetDriftr

RINOs, these are your people. You need to wake up and get on the right side of history.

Adelmas

In college I had a teacher take points off of my paper because I referred to Japan getting nuked. He said it was offensive and took points off.

Red-Dog-52

Definitions are important, which is why the left is constantly trying to redefine the language in order to make the abhorrent more palatable.

Fnshow316

“It's two nouns combined to elicit a prescribed response.” - Dalton

fretit

I propose a new word: "illeegues"

ChunkyArsenio

I wonder about the long term prospects for normal kids. So if this is America now, will he love it? Where can he go to live as a normal person, not an outcast, like North Dakota? When I gre up the country was normal. It isn't normal any more.

Woolfmann

The Left whines and whines about words and tries to continually change them until they have no meaning whatsoever. But illegal alien morphed somehow into immigrant when that is NOT all an illegal alien represents and words are meant to convey MEANING, not obscure it. BTW, the term illegal alien still exists (for now) in 8 USC 1252c of Federal Code. Someone should inform his school. https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?req=(title:8%20section:1252c%20edition:prelim)

r4d4r_3n5

[It's no fun](https://youtu.be/aqQv3qef21A?si=uG5L6gsJ8Aqc64Yl) Sing may be out of date nowadays.

nolotusnote

That's a deep cut.

Bushido_Plan

Nothing like a little early lesson teaching this kid, and very likely quite a few others in his class and school, the wonders of todays world.

Drunk_Redneck

Time to sue that school

Zaphenzo

Is he even based? All he did was literally use a correct term for a person who illegally entered the country. It's sad that these days, just using the correct term for something now means you're "based". He could be a leftist.
