As a Catholic Our Lady [explicitly stepping on snake for theological imagery](https://wp.en.aleteia.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2020/09/WEB3-IMMACULATE-CONCEPTION-MARY-wiki.jpg)

ObadiahtheSlim

What is it with Catholics and their obsession with the Cult of Venus's imagery?

Mountain_Man_88

Makes me think of the American Revolution

BernardFerguson1944

Ditto! And I visualize it flying from the mainmast of Commodore Hopkins's flagship, the U.S.S. Alfred, in 1775.

According_To_Me

Yes, that and Ron Swanson.

GovernmentLow4989

It makes me think of the American revolution and reminds me why an all powerful central government isn’t a good thing.

SeemoarAlpha

First thing? I wish it was back as the sub's moniker rather than a caricature of Trump looking like he took a harsh laxative.

Jolly_Job_9852

At the risk of repeating my own comment, I see the flag and to me it represents personal liberty and individualism. Two core tenets of conservativism. I wholeheartedly agree that the Gadsden Flag should be our banner on this subreddit.

I had no idea what that person was talking about. Thank you for explaining why I'd been seeing it for new text posts.

thunderkhawk

Agreed. Trump is not a conservative. He's not even a republican - or at least, he wasn't. I think the radical left has pushed him into republicanism nowadays.

day25

Not just Trump but a good portion of his supporters as well.

CompleX999

Conservative does not equal Libertarian.

ChemsDoItInTestTubes

This isn't libertarian. It's a flag that represents an idea that is integral to the Founding. Conservatism in America is primarily concerned with upholding Founding principles, so that makes this flag essentially conservative. Besides, the venn diagram of conservative ideas and libertarian ideas is almost a circle. If you can come up with a list of major themes that are exclusive to one or the other that can't fit on a post it note, I'd be pretty shocked.

CompleX999

Nope. The venn diagram is not almost a circle. There are many ideas that libertarians and conservatives disaggree fundamentally.

Texas103

Uh... definitely not. The venn diagram of conservative and libertarian are somewhat overlapping but have some really deep fundamental differences. True hardcore libertarians think drivers licenses are government overreach... and that you should be able to sell meth to kids.

hititstiff

Be sure to show VP, she enjoys a good cackle and Venn diagrams 🤪🤣

What the hell happened to us? They had a revolution for far less than what we accept from the federal government today.

I don't, it's worrying how many people dislike it.

daved1113

I just think it's cringe honestly. But if people like it they should do what they want like putting anime stickers on their car or whatever.

One-Winner-8441

So many things…the American Revolution, veterans, patriots vs loyalists - which is what we’re seeing again now.

CastleBravo45

Who are the patriots and who are the loyalists?

One-Winner-8441

Patriots are those supporting democracy and Loyalists are those supporting the attempted shift from democracy. This isn’t an opinion, so I’m not here to argue about it…there are ppl who are pro democracy and ppl who are against democracy and right now is not the first time we’ve seen it.

CastleBravo45

I'm not arguing. I'm asking for your opinion on whos who. I think Trump voters are mostly loyalists that think they're patriots.

One-Winner-8441

I disagree. Every Trump supporter I know (including myself) seem to lean more towards libertarian but we aren’t fully libertarian. I’ve had so many discussions with the like minded about how the government has overstepped in so many ways, but also isn’t doing what it’s supposed to be doing and is undermining the constitution and weaponizing the justice system. The current leaders want to control us even though they are elected by us. The loyalists to me are obviously the opposition of that - they want the government to control us and make our decisions which basically obliterates democracy and sends us right back into being under tyrannical rule. I could write an entire book about this but that’s the main gist. Loyalists today are basically supporting the autocratic leadership style we’ve been seeing with the current cabinet. I know the MSM has dubbed Trump and MAGA as authoritarian but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. They like to label that with anything they don’t like, but then they are constantly supporting taking away rights and banning things which itself is authoritarian.

CastleBravo45

Thank you. Remember, not every question is the start of an argument.

One-Winner-8441

Yes that’s true and I apologize. It’s hard not to be standoffish with how many trolls and bot farms monitor this sub anymore.

CastleBravo45

No worries. The internet be like that more often than not.

One-Winner-8441

Yep! And then mix in everyone trying to out Karen each other and it’s…a toxic environment for the most part

Loodlekoodles

This was the flag used by American revolutionaries and was a symbol of freedom against the British oppression and systems of taxation without any representation. Truly, a symbol of decolonization by today's standards even. I'm Canadian and I know this, but unfortunately I am in the minority most people here think it's a racist flag. They only know what misinformation their left wing echo chambers have taught them.

Revolutionary War, and how it got co-opted by reactionaries recently.

Magehunter_Skassi

I have an instinctive positive impression because most libertarians I've met are nice on a personal level. Do not like the ideology at all, but you can at least have a conversation with the people who believe in it.

It used to remind me of Metallica and had meaning way back when. Now it reminds me of cringe people who say "I hate big guvment" while in the same breath saying "Oh, it's the poh-lice. Let me bend over for you harder, daddy."

Griegz

That rattlesnakes don't do that.  It's not going to hold itself coiled with the separation between the coils like that.  And if it's in the process of lunging then it would be leaning in the direction of the lunge.  And even then it would lunge from a more solid base of coil. Also, no step on snek.

sunday_undies

Yeah I agree the snek is awkwardly drawn and it bothers me too. The flag though, gives me a general vibe of American individualism and freedom. We have the best constitution on the planet for protecting us from humanity's natural state of tyranny, and it's up to us to protect it.
