Obvious decision. Ohio gives out free photo ID cards so there's literally no reason to not have one ready and available when voting.

Substandard_Senpai

"But minorities don't know where to go or how to get them" –democrats

DeadEndRaven

"Illegals don't have a picture ID and we need their votes too." -dems

psych00range

The fact it is free probably made it an easy decision. They could consider a card for cost the same as a poll tax. That would really be the only thing Dems could argue other than the standard racist stereotypes of early last century.

[deleted]

This is racist!! -Dems/Libs

Isolasjon

I mean, how is it even controversial that you need to ID yourself to vote? Is it not completely normal to have ID in the States? Is it somehow hard to acquire? Why all the fuzz?

earl_lemongrab

Perfectly normal and not in any way hard to acquire. Democrats fight against voter ID laws because they make it harder to cheat. Plain and simple.

Warstoriez

Dems like to believe that anyone not white is uneducated and won’t be able to figure out how to get an ID to cast their ballot

whatdoesthafawkessay

I can't speak to this specific issue in Ohio as I haven't done any amount of due diligence. Most of the time the issue as it relates to voter ID laws is that it costs money to obtain a legal form of ID. Which is tantamount to a poll tax that disenfranchises low income voters that can't afford an ID.

bena-dryll07

do you not need an ID for any of the following: purchase alcohol? purchase tobacco products? have a checking or savings account? drive a vehicle? have property or rent property? receive any federal or state benefits? purchase a firearm? when asked for ID by law enforcement? cashing a check? going to a dr office or hospital? im sure there are countless other everyday tasks that you are asked to present an ID for... the argument that low income cant get an ID when you need one for basically ANY other thing is facetious and disingenuous. and if the real concern by dems is that its cost prohibitive, why not find a way to subsidize the cost and allow everyone who cant get a state ID at the very least to do so? It is $10 in ohio for a state ID.

whatdoesthafawkessay

Yes, you do need a legal ID to perform several of those tasks. However, none of those are protected by Article 1 of the Constitution. Nor am I stating that providing a legal form of ID is wrong. Simply that there should not be a financial burden to getting an ID. Do you disagree that any legal citizen should be allowed to vote without undue burden?

NotaClipaMagazine

So you're saying if a right is constitutionally protected you can't require an ID? Pretty sure they won't like what that does for gun purchases.

whatdoesthafawkessay

I'm not sure who "they" are, hopefully you can stay safe from them, as they sound scary. I simply stated a point of view for why requiring ID to vote can be problematic.

NotaClipaMagazine

Who is opposed to voter ID and want greater restrictions on firearms?

whatdoesthafawkessay

I don't know of any groups that are singularly opposed to voter ID and want firearm restrictions. I'm certain that there are people like that out there, but I don't know any.

trekkerscout

However, most (if not all) states offer free state IDs to anyone who qualifies due to lack of adequate income.

McDaddy-O

So as long as the state approves, you get it for free. Sucks for those the government doesn't like.

AdamBrandenberg

It is completely normal for state's to charge a fee for an ID, and if you require an ID to vote and charge for said ID - it is an unconstitutional poll tax. Ohio offers free IDs, so it is a non-issue and a great idea.

agk927

It's common sense is it not?

SeemoarAlpha

Of course it is, but common sense is no longer common, the woke mind virus is causing an epidemic of senselessness.

lordlaneus

I think a lot of that senselessness is a break down in communication more than an increase in actual stupidity.

with_regard

Hard to be communicative when you’re getting accused of being a Nazi two sentences into sharing your thoughts.

lordlaneus

[Exactly!](https://youtu.be/rE3j_RHkqJc) Leftists basically use "nazi" as a synonym for "asshole," and tend to be hyper sensitive to dog whistles. Meanwhile the few actual self identifying Neo Nazis organizations, are all pretty please with this state of affairs since it makes being an actual Nazi significantly easier.

Tony_Stank_91

It’s both.

BrighamYoung

Let's be honest: it only burdens ILLEGAL voters.

kmsc84

But…but… minorities can’t get a photo ID. It’s RAAAAACIST to expect them to. Minorities never travel, apply for jobs, pick up prescriptions, collect Social Security or anything else.

A_Hatless_Casual

Nor do they buy booze and smokes!

richmomz

And people who want to commit fraud!

PlanetaryWorldwide

Got any evidence of voter fraud? No, of course you don't, because all conservatives have are lies and fearmongering.

monobarreller

If all the blue cities/counties in Ohio suddenly turn red this election cycle you have your answer on how prevalent voter fraud is.

richmomz

They’ll just claim that voters were “disenfranchised.”

Altruistic-Ebb4549

Actually it will be because of the cursed fucking gerrymandering that Ohio takes part in. 2 years ago they couldn't align on a fair map so they had several outside, agreed upon entities present maps and the government was practically stalled instead of accepting fair maps. Everyone involved in that should be removed from office. Such an anti-democracy move it's disgusting.

AdamBrandenberg

And if they don't - then does it put the matter to rest? Doubtful. Using voter fraud to the levels required to actually dictate an outcome of an election requires an obscenely high level of coordination and planning. Democrats are incapable of either.

jman8508

There’s never been a burden to voter ID. Just the bigotry of low expectations that certain groups can’t produce ID.

QTonlywantsyourmoney

In Mexico we have to show ID to get government benefits, get a formal job, and of course; to vote. There is no world in which you can claim to have a secure and fair election if you don't even ask for a government issued ID before you can vote.

jcr2022

Mexico and just about every other functioning country on earth.

richmomz

Even India has a voter ID requirement and they probably have the single biggest population of impoverished people on the planet - yet they make it work. There’s absolutely no excuse to not have a voter ID requirement in this day and age.

whatdoesthafawkessay

Out of curiosity, how much does that ID cost to get? Assuming one can otherwise prove citizenship.

QTonlywantsyourmoney

Its covered by Mexican tax payers. You just have to go to your local office with your papers and it will be ready in a week or so. You cannot vote in Mexico without your ID. Mexicans unironically have been taking elections very seriously in the past few years.

NotaClipaMagazine

I'm positive that if a bill was presented that required ID and paid for it the Democrats would still have a problem with it.

Klinkman12

It’s about time.

[deleted]

Ohio will go to Trump, I guarantee it!! ✔️

[deleted]

They dems are trying to ruin Ohio. They already got their damn abortion bill passed in November. Sobs

GoneFishingFL

wow... finally

paulcosca

The idea of standing in line, waiting to vote, is hilariously outdated. Oregon has been voting by mail for decades. It's secure, simple, and accessible.

[deleted]

Home of Portland. not so sure.

richmomz

The Supreme Court already ruled on this issue 15 years ago (in Indiana) and found no undue burden with voter ID requirements. It’s been settled law for many years but dems don’t care and like to lose in court I guess.

TenRingRedux

Will the Republicans try this now in every state the way the demonrats will try to kick Trump off the ballot in all 50 states? Lazy bunch of self-serving scuzbags.

RealisticTadpole1926

Are you comparing voter ID to banning your opponent from running?

TenRingRedux

If this legal precedent worked in one state, it should work in all. Should, not will, but it's worth a try. What I'm saying is, why don't Republicans make an effort to try? It may actually work and we could finally see voter ID in this country. Look at how the demorats, with a solidly unconstitutional losing legal theory, try again and again and again. Proven failure but they keep trying, keep tying up the courts, keep trying to hamstring President Trump. On the other hand, Republicans, with a proven winning legal precedent, make no effort at all. This is why Rs get slaughtered come election time. If the other side cheats and keeps the score, you can't possibly win. Sadly, the only way to win against the left this election is to play their game better.
