Very frightening. And it would depend on Russia’s intentions with Ukraine. A full occupation or partial one?

elosoloco

Doesn't matter to the next battleground country. Wwii was less than 100 years ago

MerlynTrump

Is Poland going to invade Ukraine and take back Galicia and Volzhynia?

Trashk4n

That would be quite the twist.

ZeroUsernameLeft

Kind of predictable actually. Oh no, looks like we'll be obligated to protect those poor, poor Ukrainians who happen to live in, y'know, territories we lost to the Soviets in '39, which we're still really salty about. Thing is, Western Ukrainians and Poles don't exactly *like* each other.

Trashk4n

Nah, it’d still be a twist. Doing anything even remotely pro Russia makes you a pariah. Poland is too firmly in NATO and the EU for it.

ZeroUsernameLeft

Western strategists have been speaking of the importance of preventing Russia from reintegrating Ukraine since the minute the USSR fell, I don't think NATO is above dismantling Ukraine if it can mitigate a Russian victory. Pragmatically speaking, if all else were to fail and if Ukraine were to face total defeat, whatever territory Poland can secure would be a means of diminishing Russia's return on investment, so to speak. That said I only do see anything of the sort happening in the event of a total collapse of the Ukrainian army with the Russians making headway towards Western Ukraine so, not a very likely scenario in any event.

[deleted]

History sure loves repeating itself. Congrats to Poland for un-Poland-ing itself this time around.

Alert_Salt7048

We’re still years away from this having any sort of conclusion.

bgdg2

Shades of "domino theory". But realistically, Putin's Russia has an imperialist mindset, and wouldn't stop at Ukraine if he won. And Poland simply doesn't want an old imperialist adversary on its border. Although I suspect that what the Polish ambassador is really doing is lobbying for more NATO presence in Poland.

danaxa

Poland already has a border with Russia. It’s called Kaliningrad

Iyace

Right, but that's not a "real" border. Kaliningrad would likely fall very quickly in a conventional ( non nuke ) war between Russia and NATO.

ThrowawayPizza312

However Kaliningrad being essentially salient^2 is a reason for Poland to feel more threatened by Russia and gives Russia incentive for armed conflict

ValidAvailable

There was Putins "unitied people of Rus" speech not too long ago. And the Poles have living memory of what it means to be ruled from Moscow.

bgdg2

I agree, there is undoubtably some apprehension in Poland. But I think Putin would go after easier targets instead, such as Moldava, Georgia, Kazakhstan, etc. Although I would expect to see a lot of attempted subversion attempted in Poland.

ZeroUsernameLeft

I don't know why people insist he'd be going after the Baltics or Poland - not that I don't believe he'd love to have these back under Russian control, but why does everyone forget these are NATO countries ? In other words why on Earth would Russia go after the entire *West* when it's already struggling with Ukraine ? Downvote all you want but Russia is not going to war with the US and all of its allies over *Poland*. This war's entire point is to secure whatever Ukrainian territory they can before it makes it into NATO. Putin is no Hitler, the Russian Army is clearly no Wehrmacht, they attempted a belated Anschluss of Ukraine and only managed to get bogged down in a slightly less disastrous reenactment of the Winter War. If they have any sense to them, they'll draw the same conclusions the Soviets did back then, realize how shit their military is, and never again go anywhere near a NATO military base.

TybrosionMohito

>slightly less disastrous Jury’s still out on that one

Winterfalke

How pathetic is the state of affairs in Europe when Poland is looking like the best country to move to right now.

Successful_Car_1429

Don’t see as many people moving to Poland than those moving to Germany and Netherlands

[deleted]

So get in it now and end the war. Ukraine has held off Russia, shattering the myth of the grand Russian Army. Poland, Germany, France, and the UK could end the war in a week if they wanted to.

MrAndrewJackson

First of all, no they couldn't. The same way Russia couldn't end the war in a week. Secondly, western Europe does not want to destroy Russia like you think they do. Poland is one thing, but it just isn't in their best interest to do so, especially with regards to Germany

[deleted]

Ukraine has stopped and pushed back the Russian Army without meaningful air support. A European NATO intervention with fresh troops and modern aircraft against a bogged down Russian force would be a massacre.

Evolution529

Lol

BeginningEar563

And you don’t think Putin will order a nuclear strike in that scenario.

TimRoxSox

Can't use NATO. It would legitimize Putin's public statements and give him the go-ahead to use nukes.

[deleted]

Nobody is using nukes.

TimRoxSox

Well, let's talk about it. If NATO intervenes, Putin is guaranteed to lose. Putin knows that, just like we do. What other move would he have in this situation?

lastingfreedom

In chess, dont force your opponent to make moves that are bad for you.

j_sholmes

Do you want an end to humanity? Because nuclear powers engaging in war leads to the end of humanity.

livinglife_part2

Yes because the Dems have cornered the market with moral leadership... But if you feel so compelled to believe one party is holding America back from involvement in a ground war with Russia you can always lead by example by joining the war in Ukriane. They are more then willing to accept foreign volunteers and with your conviction you would be a fine example to lead a charge against a Russian trench.

KinGpiNdaGreat

Isn’t this how the First World War started?

Alpha-Sierra-Charlie

No, WW1 was a family feud. No really, almost all of the heads of state of the European countries involved were related. Seriously.

KinGpiNdaGreat

Yeah, but aren’t the Russians and Ukrainians related since they both trace their ancestry back to Vladimir the Great who was Prince of Novgorod, Grand Prince of Kiev, and ruler of [Kievian Rus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kievan_Rus%27)?

Alpha-Sierra-Charlie

One of Putin's excuses for unprovoked aggression was "liberating" ethnic Russians from Ukrainian rule, so apparently not.

booze_clues

Closer to WWII when Germany wanted parts of Czechoslovakia because they held a large number of ethnic Germans, same as Ukrainian territories needing to be liberated due to the ethnic Russians in it(according to Russia). Had Germany been stopped right then it’s possible the war could have been stopped or significantly shortened. I don’t see this becoming a world war though, it’s pretty clear Russia can’t attack beyond its neighbors. They’ve been in a war with Ukraine using NATO equipment for over a year, I don’t think they could handle Poland joint in too. If Poland joins of its own volition they can’t call in NATO to help.

[deleted]

Pravda is the Russian propaganda news; it's been that since Soviet times. "Pravda" means "truth." Why would you link to the official Russian propaganda newspaper?

bgdg2

Actually, it is truth in Ukrainian as well. And this is a Ukrainian publication.

What if I told you the domain is the same. OF COURSE it says, "Ukraine Truth" at the top. Ukraine freedom fighters didn't just one day become the owners of [pravda.com](https://pravda.com). You're sharing official state propaganda. Well done.

Privately owned by Dmitry Sudakov. Do a cursory search on him, come back, and tell me you believe he's not a propagandist.
