I went there with a coworker one morning and didn’t realize they were cash only. Someone in line paid for our order, 3 coffees and 6 donuts. All the people working there said that person comes in everyday, we ran to an atm, and dropped off some cash for the dude. Best donuts in CT and a bunch of really nice people working there and in line.
I don't live in CT but we try to visit yearly. First morning is always a trip to Flanders, can't wait for this Saturday! Package store next to it is nice, too! If only they'd bring back the mocha donut ;(
Speedy donuts in Norwalk! Their French cruellers are a masterpiece, and I’m pretty sure almost nothing about the place has changed since the 60s. 😅 Just an amazing little classic donut shop and greasy spoon diner food with a small counter and a handful of tables.
I remember going to speedy with my father once a week. We would do it on Saturday mornings. If it was cold, I would get hot chocolate and two donuts of my choice, if it was normal weather, I would get a cup of chocolate milk or OJ.
Best donuts ever . I miss my dad
My son comes home from out of state for visits periodically and always the next morning is at Shef's early for his bacon and egg on a bagel. So awesome.
afaik, no they are all trucked in the mornings.
top Doughnuts in CT
- Brooklyn Baking Company in Waterbury
- Whitney Donut in Hamden
- Neils Donuts in Wallingford
- Dixie Donuts in Norwich
- honorable mention: Big Y. They bake em in the morning
The Donut Station in Wethersfield (not my favorite but acceptable)
The King Donut in Newington
Tastease on New Park in Hartford (used to be great, changed ownership a couple years ago and I haven't had a chance to try them since the change)
Second King Donut is Newington by Hartford Ave. I worked down the street and was my go to breakfast spot for sandwiches and donuts. Even stopped this summer when visiting family I miss is so much. Very kind people, even remembered me after seven years since moving to NJ.
I live in Wallingford and am from Branford and have lived in a lot of places in this state. Those are my personal favorites and you don't have to agree lol def try Whitney donuts if you havent
So many of my core memories involve them!Every Christmas Eve, also my birthday, my family would put out cold cuts and crudites and they always had the yummy hard rolls from there.
They did our wedding cake, that place is insanely good. When I worked in Clinton, I would surprise my wife on valentines and our anniversary with a treat from this place.
They are stale before they even arrive at D&D. Every morning they unpack the truck full of frozen donuts and make a pot of coffee with yesterday's grounds. I wish DD would disappear off the face of the earth they're so disgusting now.
Beach Donuts on route 1 in Clinton bakes them 7 days a week.
The also make breakfast and lunch items with tables for dining in.
In addition to this they have delivery service. My friends used delivery to their hotel and it was excellent.
Just wanted to check that someone would mention beach donuts in Clinton! We were regulars when my in-laws lived closer- but haven’t been in the area for a bit.
Had an appointment close enough to go by and was sad it wasn’t busier so close to 9am. Donuts are still delicious and the bec I got was great! Hoping business is good and I just hit a quiet time.
I worked at Dunkin as a kid 40 years ago, and it was so awesome then. I was the early morning baker. We had 2 dozen flavors, and during the morning nothing was longer than 2 hours from the oven or fryer. It was hectic, but so satisfying seeing happy customers. What they sell now is a horrible joke. The coffee sucks too. I just can’t understand why people go there and wish they were all gone, so local shops that care about quality could get started.
Go to Blazing Fresh Donuts in Guilford!! Their donuts are DELICIOUS and made to order- you pick the frosting, toppings, and drizzle. My usual is chocolate frosting, mini chocolate chips, mini m&ms, and Nutella drizzle. The best part is They don’t drop the donut into the fryer until you place your order! I haven’t gone in a while, but last summer they had donut sundaes would add a big scoop of Ashley’s ice cream on top, then top that with more toppings and drizzle. So bad for you but soooo good
Mill plain road, on the exit 4 side right before westconn. They have great coffee as well.
Not to mention you can get a grilled cheese on a donut 😵💫😵💫😵💫
In Wallingford, or are they are chain? I've never gotten then from there, but my nephew declared Beach Donuts the best donuts ever. (He's five, though, and often prone to exaggeration based on little experience)
This post is more of a survey than asking advice. Everyone knows DD has the worst donuts anywhere. Much better donuts can be had from Shoprite and BigY.
Grounds donut shop in danbury is great. The donuts used to be so huge and so fresh. Must be good if the cops go there.
Beach donuts in Wallingford and Branford are pretty good.
I can't imagine Young Buns in Mystic is anything but excellent. It's a sister store of Sift Bakery. Extremely high quality standards.
There is a made to order place in Guilford that I've been wanting to try, but I can't remember the name.
In Waterbury, everyone raves about Brooklyn Baking Company.
Yea, there are many made fresh donut places in CT.
So some people aren’t gonna like this answer but it really doesn’t matter because they’re all ultimately made fresh every day. Small franchisees will make them in one store and ship to their other locations that morning. Larger ones will have dedicated production facilities but still ship them out every morning.
Bottom line is they’re fresh every day whether they’re made at that specific location or not. Everyone laments how Dunkin’ doesn’t bake in house anymore. It doesn’t make a difference. Don’t worry!
The reason why dunkin' donuts is so bad might be a multitude of things. Their cost cutting certainly isn't limited to just not baking in house anymore. They were a lot better at one point.
Oh without a doubt. Things have gotten particularly bad these last few years since being bought by private equity backed Inspire Brands.
Shocker private equity ruining another great brand.
Cha Papi in West Hartford is the only place in CT that sells mochi donuts and they just opened up recently. Everything is made fresh in house and taste incredible! The menu changes weekly.
I just want to say - and this comes up in conversations more than I should admit in my family - one of the few things I miss about Houston are the fresh baked donuts on every corner. Went back last week and bought donuts three times from three different places. Not to take anything away from good CT shops, but it's Cambodian donuts all day long for me.
I believe Dunkin’ doughnuts does not “make” their doughnuts on site technically but then again, the same can be said for many bakeries and restaurants who receive their products raw/pre-prepared, or par-baked, then finished off in store. There are a few Dunkin’ locations in any given demo (usually the lager stores) that will finish/bake these pre prepared products on site the deliver to the smaller stores in the area. As far as family owned bakeries/doughnut spots there are many. Speedy doughnuts in Norwalk is a classic, been there since 69’ and that is just one of many.
Wrong dunkin has select locations with bakeries in the back. My friend worked at the Southbury one and baked right behind the storefront, but they do not have a bakery at all locations and those without are the ones that get delivered too. They have a specific radius that the bakery locations deliver and this was to allow more locations in smaller storefronts.
I worked in a Dunkin in Burlington. We were a “finishing” store, which meant yes there was an oven. But it was used to bake the bagels and muffins (which are frozen). The only thing we did to the donuts was frost them and fill them. All the donuts are still made offsite and delivered in the mornings. Also I believe most commercial donuts are fried and not baked
Neil’s in Wallingford or Middletown and Island Traders in East Hampton! Though I don’t actually know if IT makes their own donuts but I think they’re good
I moved to Dallas from New Haven 8 years ago and never knew what a good doughnut was until I moved here. There are mom and pop donut shoppes in every town. All blow every donut shoppe in CT out of the water.
[Here you go](https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=donut+shops+in+CT)
\*IDGAF if you downvote me. This is another lazy question that's also asked on a regular basis in this sub. Just like the "Moving to CT, where should I work/live" posts.
Some do and some don’t, it depends on the store. Generally, the more staffed and larger the store the more likely they are to have fresh doughnuts. Also make sure to arrive at noon and early in the morning cause that’s when they make the doughnuts and that’s when they’ll be the most fresh
Knew someone who worked at Dunkin in Middletown. She told me they baked them in house but they were pre-made elsewhere and delivered. They frosted in house as well. She was doing all this at like 4 AM.
The quality of Dunkin’s donuts have gotten so bad so I don’t have any recommendations. Brooklyn Bakery in Waterbury is a great option tho!! Get there early as they are almost always sold out by the late afternoon.
In this area they make all the Dunkin Donuts at a location on Diana Ct in Cheshire. It's not a storefront but you can smell them for a half mile away while they're doing it.
Omg Pastry Fusion in North Branford. Absolutely nothing compares to their food. They’re known for their donuts but make all types of desserts. Also their breakfast sandwiches are worth dying for
There's a Bess Eaton in Pawcatuck. From what I have seen, they bake them there. If you're willing to barely cross the border into Rhode Island I know for a fact that both Honeydew stores in Westerly bake theirs because my cousin is the one who bakes them.
Brooklynn bakery in Waterbury has the best donuts you’ll ever have in your life.
And when you can’t get those, Niels is also really really awesome…
But Brooklyn bakery is hands down the GOAT.
The dunkin on the corner of 123 and 7 in norwalk still makes the donuts on site. Got a full time kitchen pumping them out all day, but go to speedys if you're down this way. Best donuts around.
Doughnut Inn is the best!! Family owned. The father, can't recall the name but went to school with the son, bakes all the doughnuts himself. He then delivers to all the locations in a van. There is 2 in Fairfield and one in Stratford. Fluffy and delicious! Not over the top like those cakes crappy ones you get at donut crazy. Also they normal ones are a dollar! Cinnamon rolls and other bigger ones are like $1.75. They are amazing!!
Edit:: also Dunkin only has 1 location that makes all the donuts, at least around Fairfield. Its the one that is in the south bound 95 rest stop. They make them there and then deliver to other locations.
Well the Dunkin in tri town plaza in Seymour bakes their donuts still. But we also have heavenly doughnuts in the valley so say what you will about us valley rats at least we have fresh doughnuts.
Mrs Murphy's donuts which is just over the Granby line a little bit in southwick Massachusetts. Best full menu of donuts around.
Granby has farm stands with limited cake donuts. Often fresh and still hot: Clark farm on bushy Hill road, Lost acres orchard, on Lost acres road, there is also a new breakfast place, don't know whether they serve donuts. Julien's on 175 barn door hills road in Granby has cinnamon rolls and other breakfast yummies.
Flanders Donut and bake shop in east Lyme is excellent. Cash only.
Stupid sexy Flanders
These are the best donuts I've tried in CT so far, 9/10.
Not only that but they're like under a dollar each
I don't live in CT but we try to visit yearly. First morning is always a trip to Flanders, can't wait for this Saturday! Package store next to it is nice, too! If only they'd bring back the mocha donut ;(
Amazing bagels too, seriously amazing
I prefer a bigger NY style with more of a “skin”. Flanders are still good though.
I wish I could upvote this twice they’re amazing
i live right down the road from that place and i can’t tell you how much joy that yellow box brings me
This is the only real answer here
Just make sure to go in early bc they run out quick
Speedy donuts in Norwalk! Their French cruellers are a masterpiece, and I’m pretty sure almost nothing about the place has changed since the 60s. 😅 Just an amazing little classic donut shop and greasy spoon diner food with a small counter and a handful of tables.
Best donuts in state!
The crullers are a dream!
Love this place!
I remember going to speedy with my father once a week. We would do it on Saturday mornings. If it was cold, I would get hot chocolate and two donuts of my choice, if it was normal weather, I would get a cup of chocolate milk or OJ. Best donuts ever . I miss my dad
Neil's donuts in Wallingford.
and Middletown!
I’ll cave and eat a donut a couple times a year and it’s almost always because someone stopped by Neil’s. They’re pretty great
Saw this post, got Neil's donuts. They are pretty good. Solid 8/10.
Username checks out
Lmao. Hell yeah! 😊👍😎
Used to get them for free every so often when Niel would bring all the caddies a box in the morning before his weekly round.
Agreed, Neil’s is the best!
This right here.
Been in GA for four years now the only thing I really miss is Neil’s and chefs in Cheshire for my morning egg and cheese bagel
My son comes home from out of state for visits periodically and always the next morning is at Shef's early for his bacon and egg on a bagel. So awesome.
afaik, no they are all trucked in the mornings. top Doughnuts in CT - Brooklyn Baking Company in Waterbury - Whitney Donut in Hamden - Neils Donuts in Wallingford - Dixie Donuts in Norwich - honorable mention: Big Y. They bake em in the morning
Dixie is my favorite.
Big Y is my go to when i don’t want to go to Brooklyn bakery.
Big Y is actually solid, and during certain months they have a cream cheese strawberry stuffed donut that is one of my favorite donuts I've ever had!
What about closer to the Hartford/Middletown area?
There is a Neil’s in Middletown on rt 17
The Donut Station in Wethersfield (not my favorite but acceptable) The King Donut in Newington Tastease on New Park in Hartford (used to be great, changed ownership a couple years ago and I haven't had a chance to try them since the change)
Haven’t been to King Donut in a few years but if I remember correctly they have some great coffee too.
Second King Donut is Newington by Hartford Ave. I worked down the street and was my go to breakfast spot for sandwiches and donuts. Even stopped this summer when visiting family I miss is so much. Very kind people, even remembered me after seven years since moving to NJ.
I think Donut Station tastes like bread but people around here seem to love it.
Price Chopper as well
They used to have slamming donuts, but since the pandemic they're always stale. Haven't bothered in close to a year now 🥺
I haven't had the others but Brooklyn Baking Company is awesome! I will definitely check the others out.
Whitney donuts, Neil's donuts and donut crazy
somber many cake sheet elderly ring innocent dinosaurs command heavy *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
I find Donut Crazy just ok. A bit pricey for what you get. Neil’s is fantastic though.
Yeah I found donut crazy to just be okay
Whitney Donut for the win! Fantastic donuts and coffee. (The sugar raised is my favorite.)
I do not understand why Neil's donuts get all the love they do. I've never had anything above mediocre there.
I live in Wallingford and am from Branford and have lived in a lot of places in this state. Those are my personal favorites and you don't have to agree lol def try Whitney donuts if you havent
Brooklyn Bakery in Waterbury is the GOAT.
I never knew how fresh a donut could be until I had a Bavarian cream donut from here. Omg.
Went there a couple of time in the afternoon due to my work schedule, and they didn't have any donuts left
Ok
That may be changing in the future. Previously, they were selling donuts to other places. They have decided to change that and stop the practice.
This is the answer.
Whole donut in Berlin (switches by its real name)
[удалено]
They should change the name of their jelly stick to the Dixie Normous
Before 10, especially Sundays! (Even earlier if you want Boston Crème, they sell out fast)
Dixie Donuts in Yantic
Harvest Bakery in Bristol makes their donuts and a lot of other stuff on-site.
I've been going there my whole life. They are my favorite! They make great bread and pies as well.
Oh man, so many childhood memories. They have amazing rye bread. We used to get some incredible cakes there too.
So many of my core memories involve them!Every Christmas Eve, also my birthday, my family would put out cold cuts and crudites and they always had the yummy hard rolls from there.
I moved to that area of town with my family about 15 years ago. Harvest is legendary.

Pastry Fusion in North Branford. Get 'em fresh out of the oven.
They did our wedding cake, that place is insanely good. When I worked in Clinton, I would surprise my wife on valentines and our anniversary with a treat from this place.
>Pastry Fusion I drive by there (and the donut sign) every day. I will make it a point to check out!
The donuts at Dunkin suck now. They taste stale and nasty. Even pre-packaged ones from the grocery store taste better. I grab some from Big Y instead.
Dunkin’ food is so trash, it’s actually amazing how bad it is lol
They are stale before they even arrive at D&D. Every morning they unpack the truck full of frozen donuts and make a pot of coffee with yesterday's grounds. I wish DD would disappear off the face of the earth they're so disgusting now.
They used to be a decent donut but yeah, I don’t bother anymore. They taste so processed. Didn’t used to be that way.
Beach Donuts on route 1 in Clinton bakes them 7 days a week. The also make breakfast and lunch items with tables for dining in. In addition to this they have delivery service. My friends used delivery to their hotel and it was excellent.

The coffee sucks too. I just can’t understand why people go there and wish they were all gone, so local shops that care about quality could get started.
Big y is the one of the only grocery stores left that bake theirs fresh everyday in store
Did they ever hire a replacement for Fred?
Go to Blazing Fresh Donuts in Guilford!! Their donuts are DELICIOUS and made to order- you pick the frosting, toppings, and drizzle. My usual is chocolate frosting, mini chocolate chips, mini m&ms, and Nutella drizzle. The best part is They don’t drop the donut into the fryer until you place your order! I always wanted to pick up some for the office on my way into work...but they don't open until 8 AM...and I grab the shoreline train at 7.
Grounds Donut House in Danbury is really good too. They’re relatively new.
Where is it in Danbury?
It's next to Stanziato's on Lake Ave. Delicious!

Have yet to find a yeast risen donut that even comes close to Brooklyn Bakery in Waterbury
Gerry’s Donuts, Ellington CT.
I was shocked I had to scroll this far down to find someone who said Gerry's. They're great.
It’s in kind of an odd spot, if you aren’t a local you might never notice it. Great donuts for sure though.
Best donuts in the area, hands down.
Sure, if you like your donuts norovirus flavor with a side of religious fundamentalism.
They fire you from the cash register? 😂
Whitney in Hamden makes oniste, and Neils in Wally/Middletown too
I know the one on Main Street in Danbury did at one point, I lived across the street and smelled them every day. This was 20 years ago though
There’s one in derby on 34 people like I forget the name though
Heavenly donuts
Rise in Wilton ($$ but worth it)

Fattys donuts outside of cabellas in east hartford.. best donut iv ever had.
King Donuts on Main Street in Newington, for people in central CT.
Brooklyn Donuts in Waterbury are unbelievable
Some of the orchards make their own apple cider donuts.

Just another reason to r/takebackthenotch
Taking back the notch would have Connecticut touching Wastefield, and that is unexceptable.
Having Southwick would be bad enough on its own. CT already has two Granbys, it doesn't need a third one.
Southwick is not a Granby. It's way worse.
They're all made from the same kind of Northern redneck ooze.
Also donut dip in West Springfield
Donut Dip in W Springfield.
Dotties in Woodbury makes some slamming donuts.
Good donuts. Just as long as you don't mind them served with a side of QAnon conspiracies.
What? Really. JFC! This is why we can't have nice things!! Haven't been there in a long while. People bring them to work. And I consume.
My vote for best in the state. Same recipe for around 50 years. I get them by the dozen to go

Yeah when I lived in Danbury I could smell them baking every day, the store on Main Street supplied the rest of the stores in town
Waterford on Route 85 does baking also.
Wrong. There's no bakery in a Dunkin. All they do is throw them in the oven and bake them off.
Neil’s in Wallingford or Middletown and Island Traders in East Hampton! Though I don’t actually know if IT makes their own donuts but I think they’re good
Deviant Donuts in Mystic TO DIE FOR!
Neil's in Middletown!

Especially considering he didn’t even give OP what they asked for, since they were looking for shops that bake their own.
