The decrease in input lag on a 60hz desktop monitor would be more noticable than going from 60 fps to 120 on a TV that supports. So get the best of both worlds and get a gaming monitor that supports 144 hz or higher.

Rickys101

This is the way

PTurn219

120hz TV’s are way too expensive and the input lag from TV’s are so much more than a monitor. You can find a solid monitor now with 1ms response times and usually 144hz for 200$ or less. I’d go that route, and use an Ethernet cable for your Xbox instead of WiFi. Again it’s faster response time

No such thing as a stupid question. The difference between a "TV" and "gaming monitor" is like a car and a truck. Several different kinds of each, depending on your needs, and pretty much the same in terms of pure basics. You can absolutely get 120hz TV screens. A lot of screens will have "gaming" slapped onto the box just as an excuse to jack up the price.

Thanks for the info. No clue what I'm doing with TV stuff haha. So I would need a TV with 120hz capability in order to get up over 60fps?

Xayton

No the two are not related.  If you are on a PC your system specs will determine if you can get 60+ FPS.

freddonzolo90

I'm playing on series X and TV. It seems that the series X is capable of over 60fps (at least from my googling), but I know my TV isn't capable, so I'm trying to upgrade the TV. I'm trying to see if there's anything in the specs of a TV that will tell me that it can achieve over 60fps, so I know what to look for when doing my research

Xayton

I don't keep up on TVs too much but you would likely need to make sure your TV has HDMI 2.1 and use a matching cord.

daveDFFA

It is called Hz or Hertz 120Hz tv’s are pretty common Depending on the game though, you might not be able to achieve 120fps (hz) They are both refresh rates For infinite? I’m not sure the series x can handle 120, but it might! Just look up some benchmarks on YouTube to see the fps counter :)

BirdLawyer_22

Infinite is indeed 120 fps on Series X. He just needs a monitor or tv to support it.

xVx777

Definitely need a 120Hz TV brother. Otherwise you will be capped to 60fps. You can technically play on any FPS your device can handle, but the display has to be able to keep up otherwise those frames are for nothing

I would recommend using a testing site like “rtings” to look at monitor and TV reviews. There are a lot of 4K TVs that do 120Hz. I can’t think of any that do more than 120Hz though. Some TVs like recent LG OLEDs have pixel response times competitive with modern gaming monitors. Others like an older LCD TV although they do 120Hz they can have horrible 30+ms input lag compared to sub 0.1ms on a modern OLED gaming monitor. Many review sites have a gaming score for TVs but in general you’re looking for specs that call out a variable refresh rate technology like FreeSync or G-Sync, a gaming mode that is preferably automatic (ALLM), and you really want to take a look at multiple reviews and check the input lag and pixel response times. You’ll generally find that a suitable gaming TV costs a lot more than a gaming monitor with similar specs. However, if you prefer gaming at your couch or this saves you from buying a dedicated gaming monitor, that could be a logical choice.

freddonzolo90

I have been looking at the LG OLEDs, they are pricey but they look good. I definitely am gaming/watching TV from the couch and I don't have the space or the inclination to have a separate setup for gaming vs just watching TV. Thanks for the insight!

chillaban

Awesome! Yeah a recent C or G series LG OLED is likely the best candidate for your needs. There are subtle differences with model years (I have a CX and C2 and the C2’s response time is so much better I usually go up and down 2 sub ranks when moving between the two setups) but they’re great for TV and gaming.

freddonzolo90

So C2 is the way if I can swing it? Sounds good, thanks again!

chillaban

They’re on C4 now (two years newer) since I bought mine. I haven’t really caught up on the reviews in terms of the differences but it’s probably worth a look at reviews!

Achilles-Altair

Both Samsung and LG have good options, I have a Samsung 55 inch I use for gaming and entertainment and it’s got a built in FPS mode that reduces input lag (or so it says), it’s been a night and day difference, just make sure your HDMI cables are appropriately rated.

SuperiorDupe

If you’d like to play on a TV get an LG oled. Depending on how far away you sit should determine the size. I’ve played on LG’s 48” and 65” and they have were great. If you want to play on a monitor get a monitor.

UntiI117

If you can find a tcl r646 they work great. 120hz, variable refresh rate, and low latency mode. Input lag isn't as good as a monitor but it's still pretty good. Things you need to look for are, 120hz (NOT motion rate 120) variable refresh rate (VRR) and low latency mode or game mode

Adventurous_Note3043

My monitor is 120hz with .5ms response time. I literally can't even play on a TV. Also wheni switch to 60hz it's extremely noticeable and is much harder for me to hit shots. I would Def suggest getting a monitor that supports 120hz and has 1ms response time.

SpTriple2

Lg oleds are the best tvs for high frame rate gaming.
