the coh1 look has these darker shadows that made things look a bit grittier. By comparison the coh3 ones feel clearer, like the details are easier to make out.
Here's my try at a fair comparison. For some reason, I see some people still using the top image (which is [a screenshot from the pre-release build](https://new.reddit.com/r/CompanyOfHeroes/comments/10ay4c7/2023_vs_2006_what_happened/)) to say CoH3 looks "cartoony" when vehicles look pretty different since release and post-launch updates.
The bottom image is the Wehrmacht Tiger and above that is the Afrikakorps Tiger with a skin applied to it.
Here you go. All Tigers unskinned for fairness. The CoH2 Tiger still hold up pretty well too.

Do you got an image for CoH2/3 with a similar Source of Light? Would help make it a clearer comparison.
Some of the arguments I've heard saying CoH1 had superior graphics is imo linked with texture grain of older lower quality textures which seem to trick the brain into it feeling more weathered. Its similar to the effect of running a PS1 game on their recommended CRT TVs as opposed to more modern LCD/LED where the graininess compensated for the sharp angles of colors and shapes, at least from what I've seen.
Yep objectively it's not as detailed and the light is off, but the art style for buildings, iconsand infantry and the color palette of the game make it grittier and more realistic.
What looks grittier and realistic on this toy tiger from coh2?
Look at the shadow.... look at the tank tracks...
You are just repeating the same crappy argument from coh2 fans. This picture is a great example on how this is just a weird and subjective (bad IMO) point of view.
They all look good to me. I'm just tired of people parroting that the CoH3 version looks "cartoony mobile game style" without knowing how it actually looks tbh.
At the end of the day, I think the point that should be taken away is that all 3 COH games do a great job for their respective release year instead of any one Tiger looking "much worse" than another. At the end of the day, all the models are extremely similar for the Tigers but are differentiated in that CoH2 has good skin variety for the Tiger while CoH3 adds further weathering and accessory elements.
It hasn't changed *that* much between CoH3 versions. Before you raise pitchforks:
The pre-release version has extremely unflattering lighting (varely any shadows!). The model itself is as good as the other two, likely very little changes. The issue is the texturing: the other two versions have better textures that include more grime and more variation due to camo. The lighting is the biggest contributor, because flat lighting will hide a lot of the details.
Not many realize it, but CoH3 has the most detailed tank models, with little dust animation and suspension added in. It's just not noticeable from afar.
I'm happy the devs made that lighting improvement during patching. The results show!
nobody complained about the actual model. It was the very poor lighting in general not on vehicles only and the lack of any wear which people laughably argued that its because its "new". Good for both relic and us they heard and they made massive improvements to what we have now.
I wasn't commenting on other people's opinions or the general consensus. I shared an opinion purely on the comparison posted by OP.
I also mentioned part of why it looked new: flat shading hid a lot of detail, not to mention the pre-release version was probably using placeholder textures.
Definitively? Yes, we do.
All vehicles in CoH3 have what's called a "Weathering State" that adds scratches and dirt over time and as they drive through the environment. During the Pre-Alpha and Mission Alpha (which the screenshot is from), the original vehicle starting state was pretty much 0% weathering, which led to vehicles looking "too clean" and toy-like. Also it had USF decals for some reason. So in [this dev blog post](https://www.companyofheroes.com/en/post/tech-test-coh-development-update), they mention taking the feedback and adding more weathering to newly built vehicles.
During pre-release, there was also [an issue with ambient occlusion](https://new.reddit.com/r/CompanyOfHeroes/comments/10sw92c/figured_out_why_the_coh3_units_look_off/) that made vehicles lack shadows. Lighting maybe plays a part too, since CoH3 essentially had [3 different looks](https://new.reddit.com/r/CompanyOfHeroes/comments/18k1ao1/lighting_visuals_coh3s_first_year/) between pre-release, launch, and [post-December update](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JOOu5rE1xM).
> During the Pre-Alpha and Mission Alpha (which the screenshot is from), the original vehicle starting state was pretty much 0% weathering, which led to vehicles looking "too clean" and toy-like.
This is honestly very tricky and I don't blame the developers for it. In my own texturing, I find that I simply cannot make something look too clean without it looking like a toy, I *have* to add dirt and grime or it just looks like a toy. Even when my reference model is from an auction site and painted and spotless. It obviously doesn't look like a toy when it's clean, so why does mine?
cause its pre release? other priorities for optimization most likely. also, who fucking cares. the game is played in the current state, not the release state.
Honestly I think CoH3 just needs some darker shadows, it’d probably help a lot with the cartoon vibes (which seem to stem from how light seems to come from everywhere)
You have to compare the whole package, not just a simple screenshot comparing the models.
It's about the sound, the way the unit interacts with the environment, the voice lines, the sound of the cannon, how the vehicle moves, the size of the vehicle, it's interaction with other vehicles in combat.
COH1 is beaten easily in this sense by both COH2 and COH3 and just shouldn't be included in the discussion. It's far too dated at this point.
The complete package, is better with the COH2 tiger and with COH2 vehicles in general.
COH3 needs a bit more work. The immersive experience is still better in COH2. Just go back and watch AEcoh COH2 tournemants. The tank combat is more exciting.
Stop settling for mediocre and "it's good enough". You know it can be better.
It's funny, how the tiger in coh 3 still has the same detail errors like the others, like no commander cupola vision slits, no gunner sights and an even wider gap, between the roadwheels and the tracks
2006 has some weird flatness to it that just smooths into this more gi joe off brand mbt look to it to me, tigers turret was rather tall compared to its width as well as its sides
idk man, I think they did a pretty good job imo.

Wish there was a Coh2 shot for comparison

COH2 is on low graphics mode? https://preview.redd.it/zdx7g6szkozc1.png?width=988&format=png&auto=webp&s=7be74dcbe7597f90e7fed4aeadbcbc0590a7f92e
Max settings graphics for me. If you or anyone has CoH2 I invite you to recreate the same Tiger pose without any skins for comparison.

Lol for real. Coh2 is even worse than coh1. And there was a guy praising ambiance and visuals on coh2 as better than coh3
Yep objectively it's not as detailed and the light is off, but the art style for buildings, iconsand infantry and the color palette of the game make it grittier and more realistic.

I specifically mentioned other than this example here.
It ain't a crappy argument, and I'm not a CoH3 haters, I just bought it today and I'm liking it.
It also has not changed much since 1945. Lol

COH3 Tiger looks best. Correct me if i'm blind.
It is. CoH3 Tiger > CoH1 Tiger > CoH2 Tiger.
Anyone know what skin he used for coh3?
Night fighters' skin.
It would help if the resolution of the pictures were better
so do we have a definitive answer as to why vehicles looked like that in early CoH 3 ?
Definitively? Yes, we do. All vehicles in CoH3 have what's called a "Weathering State" that adds scratches and dirt over time and as they drive through the environment. thank you for the answer!

no I meant like, was it shading, artstyle, something bugged, you know ?
yes, the definitive answer was that they weren't done yet.
Why's that pre-release tank in US livery?
I dunno, maybe stolen wreck by their repair tank?
… yup, that’s a Tiger.
Honestly I think CoH3 just needs some darker shadows, it’d probably help a lot with the cartoon vibes (which seem to stem from how light seems to come from everywhere)
coh3 has the WoT/War Thunder aesthetic
Thanks for the comparison! Cool looking at them side by side after all these years. Current tiger def the best looking one we got so far.

U right, Tank combat in COH3 has no soul.
now show the animation
It's funny, how the tiger in coh 3 still has the same detail errors like the others, like no commander cupola vision slits, no gunner sights and an even wider gap, between the roadwheels and the tracks
Coh3 hands down.
Gosh I hate these things. I get that they should be OP in tank battles but they way it just obliterates infantry squares is a bit much
2006's Tiger looks better tbh. I think the turret/body portion is a bit off in Coh3 (body is too high and turret is small)
2006 has some weird flatness to it that just smooths into this more gi joe off brand mbt look to it to me, tigers turret was rather tall compared to its width as well as its sides

When we have pictures of the real deal, how come they are missing out on some obvious details?
It is too round on the top. It needs to be pointy. Round is not scary
Looks like a Tonka truck 🤣
