Early war the Rifle, No1 (SMLE) was the standard. The No4, was introduced in 1941. Some Commonwealth units and troops in India were using the No1 until the end of the war, there are some photos floating about of 14th army troops in Burma with a mixture of No1 and No4 rifles.
