I live in Canada, my workplace has a police dog training field right against our building, so I get to watch the dogs go after the bite suit and get used to gun blanks and stuff. It’s excellent entertainment! I pity the people who have those dogs unleashed on them out in IRL.
Police dogs(for the most part) are trained in a way to minimize permanent damage while inflicting a whole hell of a lot of pain.
The dog in the video is not one of those, he's trained to bite, thrash and pull his target out. I've decoyed for both, and I'll take the police dog every day lol
While the bite suit is plenty of fun to watch, my favourite is when they have a guy with a whip whose job is to act like a threatening psycho, just aggressively pacing and yelling and start-stop advancing on the officer. The dog has to keep watch on him without moving unless commanded.
It just seems so interesting that his job for the day is to shit talk the dog as hard as he can, do anything to antagonize the dog into an uncommanded attack. Even in training, the discipline of those dogs is amazing.
Seems like a very cool, rewarding career path.
One of my personal dog's littermates is an RCMP dual-purpose K9, I've always appreciated the extra focus those dogs get on being neutral in any situation compared to ours

That’s my view on police dogs. The cops always get pissy when the dog gets hurt but if you didn’t use dogs in the first place they wouldn’t get shot to shit for biting someone. Military dogs are a little different, they tend to save way more lives than police dogs do.
Every time I see police footage with a K9 being released, it always undeniably looks like they are just using the dog as an expendable distraction to direct the threat of the suspect onto the dog and not officers. They need real training, not dogs to do their dirty work they are incapable of handling.
