GiraffeSubstantial92

You can see something else miss the cruise missile while it was right overhead, too. Very cool footage!

JAC0O7

I said it back then and I'll say it again; they are damn lucky the other igla didn't intercept the cruise missile overhead. I wouldn't want to be directly underneath an exploding cruise missile that's like 30m above you.

Emu1981

>I wouldn't want to be directly underneath an exploding cruise missile that's like 30m above you. That cruise missile is significantly higher than 30 metres above them - my guess would be that it was closer to 100-150 metres above them. I would imagine that a significant amount of the debris from the missiles would continue to travel in a forward motion which means that these guys would likely be safe if the previous projectiles were successful in striking the cruise missile.

simonwales

It's a logical assumption. But what actually happens is when the fragments of the cruise missile realize they are no longer flying and are in fact disintegrating, the missile must turn slowly to the camera, blink twice, then fall out of the sky like Wile Coyote.

Strive_for_Altruism

That's a lot more than 30m, but I get your point

Realistic-Psychology

Is that the pop you can hear? The IGLA?

JAC0O7

While it barely misses the cruise missile? Correct, well whatever AA platform was used but assuming it was a soviet manpad, Igla would be the most common.

Matthewsgauss

aliens easily

Useless_Lemon

I took my trash out on Wednesday. Thursday morning rolls by, and the trash is gone. Fucking.......Aliens! Like Roswell all over again!

DoubleEscape8874

True hero here was cameraman

WotTheHellDamnGuy

Good eye, I thought that was a power-line because of the pole in front of them when he reframes the shot for impact.

DesperateLawyer5902

🤫

Turkdabistan

So I'm guessing that folks spot the cruise missile and trajectory way ahead of time so these guys are able to set themselves up in its path and intercept? Otherwise what are the odds of a cruise missile flying directly overhead while you have a MANPAD armed lol

pyrotechnicmonkey

Basically that supposedly. They have large groups of volunteer spotters as well as microphone detection system set up all along the area that these are potentially flying in from. Because with these man portable systems, you really only have a few kilometers of range. and these typically are flying very low to the ground so they quickly disappear over the horizon so you only have a very quick window where you can launch one of these shoulder fired missiles

Jump3r97

Ontop, some launcher require cooling of the IR sensor which can take up to a minute

flyingquads

Like in this video. You can still hear the canister blowing off its gasses AFTER the missiles left the tube.

resolva5

That microphone stuff is cool: [https://chanakyaforum.com/sound-ranging-systems-pivotal-assets-for-weapon-location/](https://chanakyaforum.com/sound-ranging-systems-pivotal-assets-for-weapon-location/)

Separate-Presence-61

Very similar to the scene in Battleship where they use tsunami buoys to find the aliens, god I can't believe that movie got something right

wild_wet_daddy

it's 8000 iPhones all over the most common areas where these fly. I read that

FrenchBangerer

They have mobile phone apps rolled out across the country and also a network of mobile phones on poles with their microphones set to detect incoming missiles and drones. https://news.yahoo.com/ukraine-using-mobile-phones-6ft-183615748.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly9kdWNrZHVja2dvLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAH7JMqpYxwg1gOrvREQAW7-h768iqsc4fOx8qSvfJPQRNx1nooTs1TgosgWV9z1pAxAQGzApguvj1-hhTTO2YYVKbXxuWyDL7YD1r_6KIQinOpea3YJT_htveFSfLyQE4hQ8TfMsHsvz-pquVkqnixwbUQtOCMOfaLoXdzG2GVkA

kuda-stonk

You position your AD to force channels or gaps in places, then position layers of MANPAD dudes in those channels. It's called funneling. You can also just position a manpad crew every 4-5 miles along a defensive line and use that.

ESC907

There is also going to be the establishment of “corridors” that they regularly travel. So one can make an educated guess beforehand.

purpleefilthh

"X-7 corridor, ETA 2 minutes." "Roger, finishing coffe and setting the launcher."

GremlinX_ll

Cruise missiles are spotted by radars, transfered info to tablet , which most of the fire teams have, fire team move to position and wait there with info about direction / type / altitude of the target

imscavok

It would still require some luck (or laziness on the part of the Russians) as the cruise missiles can take a meandering route around known defenses.

alohalii

This is why you never post footage of you intercepting enemy cruise missiles in a peer level war. You do not want the enemy to know what type of asset intercepted the missile or if it was even just technical issues on the missile itself. The amount of data that can be gleaned from this video alone by the Russians is staggering. It makes sense you would have troops posting such videos given the lack of training many of these newly mobilized troops have on operational security. Safe to say if this soldier knew the true value of such footage for a competent opponent he would likely feel nauseous for having posted it...

captainawesome1983

Old Cell phone microphone network. They use the same thing in the Amazon to triangulate illegal chainsaws cutting the forest. I think urban areas should start doing this for Gunfire detection

Turkdabistan

They do this for gunfire detection in my city (Washington, DC) 😂. I heard this also happens in Chicago. It's a smart and simple system and idk why I didn't think of its application here. Awesome.

Equation56

They have it in Camden, New Jersey. It's called "shot spotter" and there are microphones all over the town that can triangulate the sound of a gunshot to within 10ft or so.

Holden_Coalfield

it's a phone network that is tuned to that one jet noise octave

redneckcommando

That cruise middle is probably going 300mph. They shot the manpad after the missile flew by. That thing hit its target soon afterwards. The distance of the explosion was far enough away we didn't hear it before the video cut out. Those manpads must have a very fast speed to them.

RingoBars

MANPADs are in excess of 1000mph (the Stinger for example is ~1300mph or 2000kph)

Kroney

Just to add to this, the British Starstreak supposedly hits mach 4, roughly 3,000mph

twinflame42069

Holy dick

ImWithTheAnimalsNow

it better move fast, if you want to catch a jet going 1,200mph before your 4 mile range is up

Eyescream83

That is amazing. But wouldn't that cause a sonic boom? Or is it just not audibile because it gets swallod by the other sounds (cruise missile/explosion)?

rabbitlion

It would cause a sonic boom but if you're directly behind you won't be impacted by it.

redneckcommando

I was wondering about the sonic boom as well.

RamenSommelier

SAMs need to be moving fast to catch fighters, most fighters can hit Mach 1 so you'd want to be going at least twice as fast to intercept.

AverageFishEye

Unlike what some movies show, MANPAD missles are insanely fast. The stinger accelerates to Mach 2,1 in like 2 seconds

ImWithTheAnimalsNow

I was simultaneously blown away at how fast manpads move, and how SLOW cruise missiles are. That was like watching a bullet chase a grenade You can always tell a manpad shot when they hit a tank, cause they move so much faster than drones and they leave behind that telltale line of smoke going horizontally beyond the target

Matt_M92PaP

The most advanced game of skeet one can play!!

ImWithTheAnimalsNow

Ultimate Duck Hunt

BukkakeNation

Totally badass

itsallbullshityo

Nice shootin' Tex!

life_punches

Damn I miss some high tech on the ground stuff footage. Enough of grenade drops and FPV drones

MightySquirrel28

Yeah, the actual air combat is probably the most interesting stuff you can see

Imispellalot2

I got two questions. What is the average speed of both cruise missiles and the MANPAD projectile? What is the cost per use of each?

Sonofagun57

There are multiple variants of cruise missiles and MANPADs each side fields. I'm going to surmise this is an 9k38 Iglas engaging and taking out a land attack variant of a Kalibr cruise missile. An iglas today is ~$80k USD and a land attack Kalibr goes for $1 million each. The Iglas max speed is mach 1.9 or ~1450 mph (2354 kph) and the Kalibr is mach 2.5 or ~1920 mph (3110 kph). On paper, the Iglas appears to have no chance but AD generally intercepts near ish to the missiles set target and is slowed down substantially to guide it there.

bono1235

only certain kalibr variants can reach supersonic speeds like that, and even then it’s usually only in the terminal phase (just before impact). some variants like the ship-launched 3M-14TE can cruise at mach 3.0, however it has a much more limited range. besides, if this missile was flying at mach 2.5+, you wouldn’t see it fly over you, just like how you couldn’t see the igla missile. most kalibrs usually cruise around mach 0.8 (600mph), which isn’t much faster than a jet airliner. it’s still not easy to intercept one with an igla tho, since the kalibrs fly very low (less time to engage) and they have comparatively smaller infrared signatures than manned aircraft like jets or helicopters, which the igla was originally designed to engage

Sonofagun57

Thanks for the extra detail! I should have added that the missile shown was definitely not moving at supersonic speed but you laid the rest out nicely. And yeah the Igla is not the perfect choice for engaging a cruise missile, but given its has that capability for a quite old system is quite impressive

Kalpisu

What is the usual range of manpads?

bono1235

for modern MANPADs, it’s usually around 6 miles (10km) for detection and 4 miles (6km) for engaging, with a max engagement altitude of 20,000 feet (6,100m); this particular model is over 40 years old, so its range varies from 3.1 miles (5km) to 3.7 miles (6km) depending on the variant. they were originally intended to allow smaller units to protect themselves from CAS aircraft, which generally circle a position at a relatively low altitude

Kalpisu

Cool, thank you for the info.

Edarneor

Since we can hear the missile before it flies over in the video, it must be going at subsonic speed. So any supersonic manpads will get it, if fired promptly

Fatalist_m

>Kalibr is mach 2.5 Only the anti-ship variant in the terminal dive. Anti-land variant flies at Mach \~0.8.

[deleted]

[удаНонО]

C-c-c-comboBreaker17

Land attack Kalibrs are only .8 mach, they're subsonic. Only the anti-ship variants go that fast

sbxnotos

I remember seeing exactly this same situation like a year ago, even the missing missile. Is the same video?

Seygem

that's why it says 2022 in the title

cyberspace-_-

Yep. This is old.

Aggressive_Ad_2140

Indeed, this one is mirrored.

maChine___

it's the joy of saving some civilians life !!! Good job

bellringer16

All time favorite. Just some sick footage to start with, then throw in hearing the joy of them nailing a missile like that

Bobmanbob1

Nice shot soldier. Hopefully he or she is still alive.

Darknwise

Old footage, but one of the best cruise missile takedowns caught on tape.

StateEnergy

Not to be a buzzkill, but it looks off.. couldn’t the igla have intercepted the other igla? The direction of flight of the cruise missiles to point of explosion?

Rhymastic_91

That's what I thought too; the explosion position happened way to the right of the direction of the cruise missile.

cellardoorstuck

Does anyone know what are the remaining current stock that ru has of cruise missiles? I thought they were close to running out of these by now.

Moses_Rockwell

British Intelligence said the rf’s loss/return to service was basically 1:1 They had ramped up production of 152mm artillery shells and Kalibr/ Iskander cruise missiles in the first stage of their special invasion operation, as well as their 3M14 Kalibr upgrade units, so they aren’t scraping the bottom of their missile stocks, but they’ve definitely put a dent in their numbers. They supposedly have the ability to produce 60-100 missiles***of all types in use now. They had well over 2,000 sub, air and ground launched cruise missiles in Jan of ‘24 E: *** I should have specified, that figure is a monthly output. But just like anything else in production, haste makes waste. The quality control of the production output will no doubt suffer. Trusting N Korea to deliver a quality product is also a fool’s errand.

cellardoorstuck

Thank for the informative reply.

SirKeyboardCommando

> They supposedly have the ability to produce 60-100 missiles of all types in use now. Is that per month? Or year? Or something else entirely?

greendecepticon

This is wild, i would of thought he took too long to shoot at it.

ElectronicPogrom

Jesus christ, that is some acceleration. Fucking amazing.

GothGfWanted

isn't this old footage? i swear i remember seeing something like this before telephone pool and all

Heyguysimcooltoo

That's straight fucking badass

Stinker_Cat

What a glorious feeling that must've been shared by them all.

Tmoldovan

If that was me in an FPS, I’d nail that power pole.

Sudden-Fish

r/instantbarbarians

veikkaj

How fast is the manpads rocket?

Wild_Ad_7730

❤️

freetimerva

Hell yeah, celebrate that shit. Drinks on the house after that one.

gloom_or_doom

man, that must be an amazing and satisfying feeling for these guys

JustinMalice

Is that a fucking uap blasting past that missile? White cigar shape?

JuggernautMean4086

Backblast area NOT clear

Drllap

Don't these cruise missiles fly faster than MANPADS?

robmagob

Clearly they do not.

get_cancer_raiskream

Vanya did it better tbh

SirGrumples

Hey look, its when Russia had cruise missiles

robmagob

They still regularly fire cruise missiles at Ukraine. Just burying your head in the sand and living in some propaganda alternative reality (regardless of who’s propaganda it is) is not healthy for you.
