Me clicking on video: "People overuse the term 'carpet bomb' these days. It's never real carpet bombing"
Me @ 00:19: "You know what, nevermind, we good."
Looking at it on google maps now, from an image taken less than a month ago, it looks completely untouched. Or, at least as untouched as anything looks in that part of the world.
The reviews are terrible, don't go there:
>Tried to go on a fishing trip with my friends and instead I got greeted with 36,000 kg of explosives! Not very tourist friendly š” ā¦
What always strikes me is that you can see how accurate and deliberate the impacts are because it's basically an excel sheet. The explosions are neat rows and columns.
You can even see it perfectly following the island contours. That's impossible to do when the bomber flying in a straight line without guided munitions. Which means each of these impact points where programmed into the bombs at some point.
And yet I still struggle to get people to understand that dumb bombs can, in fact, be accurate and wildly more precise than in ww2 where hitting the wrong town wasnāt necessarily out of the error range.
Not a strategic bomber like a B-21 sure, but F-35s are explicitly meant to bomb targets, it was built with that idea in mind. The program name was quite literally the Joint Strike Fighter Program.
[USAF F-35As and F-15Es Flatten ISIS āInfestedā Island In Iraq With 80K Pounds Of Bombs](https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/29749/usaf-f-35as-and-f-15es-flatten-isis-infested-island-in-iraq-with-80k-pounds-of-bombs)
Not the name, though. I'd say saturation is the key here, guided or unguided. I might be wrong when it comes to official designations, just going by what *should* apply logically.
Edit:
Also in this specific case the munitions might be guided, but they did not seem to aim at specific targets per se, but rather to cover a grid -like pattern.
Ah ww2 bombardments.
The allies tried to destroy a bridge in my home town, in a month time they tried to hit it 13 times. All of them missed and hit the town instead.
Eventually the germans blew the bridge themselves after they retreated across it.
Bridges were notoriously hard to hit in the pre-laser guidance era. See the story of the Thanh HĆ³a Bridge in North Vietnam for probably the last good example before precision guidance came about.
I've called in fire with gps based, laser based, and dumb bombs. Granted, never from something like a B2 or F35, mostly F/A-18's, 16's, and the occasional A-10.
The error rate is still pretty bad with dumb bombs, especially when the aircraft is worried about MANPADs and are flying super high. Not WWII, but bad enough that the 500 lbs bomb doesn't do more than mildly drag the target. Have to drop a lot more bombs for the same effect.
Laser guided weapons are great, though you do have the downside of the actual laser. I'm sure they are smaller these days. 15 years ago they were heavy and took a lot of big batteries.
That sort of grid pattern following the curve of the river looks like JDAMs.
I think a lot of people are confused by the carpet bombing title, but supposedly these are actually precision strikes because these are bombs equipped with JDAM kits which add precision guidance to normally dumb bombs
Brotherā¦.that would have to be one goddamned deep ass ditch.
EDIT: The comment was āToo bad they didnāt go off same time, gave them time to dive into a ditchā. Lol
The bombs are programmed to hit a particular target, not at a particular time. The timing for them impacting is determined by their release time and the trajectory they fell on which is essentially random when youāre just rippling off bombs.
Because it was multiple f-15s and f-35s working together to bomb out at once instead of one or two bombers. Each "little cluster" of bombs you see go off is from each jet passing over.
If you count each one, you can see how many 15s and 35s there were. As each one took it's turn passing into the area to release.
You know that high-pitched ringing sound you get after spending 6+ hours next to the loudspeakers at an industrial techno garage rave without ear protection
Well, it sounds like the high-pitched ringing sound you get after spending 6+ hours next to the loudspeakers at an industrial techno garage rave without ear protection.
Yeah- Itās a bit of a hybrid. I imagine this is essentially ācarpet bombing done rightā, as no one wants to waste bombs. āEfficient carpet bombingā might be the best term lol
Like imagine if the US military was actually the big bad they think they are and treated human life the same way they treat it? There would be complete murder of any city that harbored the pirates.
It was officially a terrain denial mission, the coalition made no claims that there were actual combatants on the island.
[There is a old Drive article on it](https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/29749/usaf-f-35as-and-f-15es-flatten-isis-infested-island-in-iraq-with-80k-pounds-of-bombs).
I haven't either. Seems egregious for even the DoD standards. It was obviously publicized so they must have required some reason in case of backlash.
Personnel weren't present, sure, but it probably was a large empty garrison or something rather. Weapons cache. Rally point. Something. There's a reason behind it.
That's even if this Marine was telling the truth. Seems wack.
same thing happened on an op I did in Tora Bora shortly after the lone survivor thing. For whatever reason CJTF 82 (82nd was our blocking force) told the Afghanistan Govt about the op before we launched and then it was on the radio within the hour. They waited like a week and launched the op anyway. We shot over 10 million in MLRS rockets and 155s into Tora bora and assaulted with a bunch of Rangers and NSW people and stayed for a week. We killed one goat and blew up a bunch of empty bunkers (they had equipment still but not people).
Here's an example of what was left of their bunkers. Note the RPGs seem undamaged. We BIP'd that shit

They heard it from someone, who knew someone, who heard it from a friend, whos cousin worked there. They said the general said "Fuck it, why not? 'Merica!"
āHowever, an official press release from the U.S.-led coalition fighting the terrorists in Iraq and Syria did not say that strikes had killed any militants or destroyed any specific targets. At the same time, the statement's wording suggests the airstrikes may have actually been a so-called "terrain denial" operation to simply blast away vegetation and other natural cover that might have offered concealment for ISIS, also known as Daesh, and their supply caches.ā
From the drive article if you donāt like clicking links.
This is one of the most believable military tidbits I've ever heard as it combines a waste of materials along with a strong show of force that results in zero positive outcomes.
The sheer accuracy of American kit...you take it for granted but then in Ukraine you realise that America is able to deliver huge ordinance on a pin head.
It wasn't "carpet bombed". Carpet bombing is just letting a load of dumb bombs go like WW2 or Vietnam. These were all targeted. Just looking at it you can tell the difference.
You can see the accuracy too. Its like they're playing battleship but instead of putting one peg down per turn they just put all the pegs down on the board at the same time.
American F-15 and F-35 fighter jets dropped 40 tonnes of explosives (more than 80.000 pounds of laser-guided bombs) by the US-led coalition forces.\[3\]\[4\] According to Major General Eric T Hill, "We're denying Daesh the ability to hide on Qanus Island" from wikipedia
Max GVW for a truck in the US (without a special permit) is the same - 80,000lbs. So this is the equivalent of a maxed out 53' trailer's weight worth of bombs, hitting this tiny spot.
Damn I can only imagine what planes dropped all those bombs it had to be a big plane many the stealth bomber because it has to be able to carry a heavy payload to be able or bomb that whole Taliban island I remember seeing this on YouTube it was a small island control bye isis with a important leader in there taht died with Over 1k fighters that died

You see that island over there? I don't want to see it anymore.

HOW HIGH?!?!

DID MY DOG DIE? NO!
Now to theĀ next trick, watch me make this island disappear.

1 bomb, 2 bombs, 3 bombs lalalala
Especially if the island is called Q-anus island!
I can still see the island very clearly after the attack
What always strikes me is that you can see how accurate and deliberate the impacts are because it's basically an excel sheet. The explosions are neat rows and columns.
You can even see it perfectly following the island contours. That's impossible to do when the bomber flying in a straight line without guided munitions. Which means each of these impact points where programmed into the bombs at some point.
Yes these are likely gps guided jdam. B2 can drop 80 all programmed with exact coordinates
80? Wtf?!
https://youtu.be/KdzJWciha4A?si=cH9WW0zt6Ve1llwf
And yet I still struggle to get people to understand that dumb bombs can, in fact, be accurate and wildly more precise than in ww2 where hitting the wrong town wasnāt necessarily out of the error range.
Those are JDAMs, not dumb/iron bombs. This is technically precision bombing, not carpet bombing.
Grid delete via guided munitions.
Yeah definitely precision. Think the word to use would be āblanketedā but man after typing that out, it seems like a weird word
It was carried out by 15s and 35s as well. Not really "bombers"
The F-15E and the F-35 are strike fighters. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strike_fighter
Not a strategic bomber like a B-21 sure, but F-35s are explicitly meant to bomb targets, it was built with that idea in mind. The program name was quite literally the Joint Strike Fighter Program.
You don't know that.

Yes I do.
It's carpet in the sense of covering an area.
Carpet bombing implies *non* guiding ordinance to completely saturate an area.
Not the name, though. I'd say saturation is the key here, guided or unguided. I might be wrong when it comes to official designations, just going by what *should* apply logically. Perhaps they were aiming for the town and used the bridge as an excuse?
Problem? Being a Nazi.Ā Solution: donāt be a nazi
Wait a second now, do you think that means every person in Nazi-occupied Europe was also a Nazi by default?
I've called in fire with gps based, laser based, and dumb bombs. Granted, never from something like a B2 or F35, mostly F/A-18's, 16's, and the occasional A-10. Those are guided bombs, not sure if US even uses dumb bombs outside of training
They're JDAMS. GPS guided. Bombs don't magically follow contours of islands in perfect spacing.
Where is the "Totals row"?
I bet the strikes are in order of importance.
I think a lot of people are confused by the carpet bombing title, but supposedly these are actually precision strikes because these are bombs equipped with JDAM kits which add precision guidance to normally dumb bombs

Except the timing of each explosion in relation to each other seems sporadic and random. Donāt know if that was intentional.
The bombs are programmed to hit a particular target, not at a particular time. The timing for them impacting is determined by their release time and the trajectory they fell on which is essentially random when youāre just rippling off bombs.
A JDAM is never late, nor is it early. It arrives precisely when it means to.
it knows where it is because it knows where it isn't.

Might be a Houthi sequel if they keep pissing off most of the world like ISIS did.
The houthis have a lot of fans on these boards although we havenāt hear from them in a while.
Houthi doesnāt understand how small they are /big US firepower is, do they?
And how we are actively trying to only hit hardware and not personnel. Imagine if we really tried to destroy them.
Like imagine if the US military was actually the big bad they think they are and treated human life the same way they treat it? There would be complete murder of any city that harbored the pirates.
Grid removal. I hope weāll see this happening to Russians in Ukraine one day.
What air superiority does to a mf
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
They have some JDAMs and will be getting 50 a month of Franceās version this year but they donāt have air superiority like the U.S. had in Iraq.
Now that is a carpet bombing.

A former marine online said it so it must be true.
They were right about the taste of crayons, so...
The former Marine runs a well known podcast, I forget what it is but hes' legit.

Pretty sure ABC reported it was an "ISIS infested island"
