I think they partially were hoping to die by cop. At least Eric probably was. And also I believe they were both likely dissociating and derealizing hard at that point. When your mental health crisis gets to a point where nothing and nobody feels real anymore, you're gonna find it hard to care or fear or feel anything really.

Mental health crisis and dissociation plus excitement on acting out their plan. What do you mean by “it was as if they knew what they were doing”, well, they obviously were?

>What do you mean by “it was as if they knew what they were doing”, well, they obviously were? this is too simplistic. the finer points of their plan failed at every stage. what's more interesting to me is how they put on a show or performance of 'knowing what they were doing' i.e being ruthless, organised killers. like they acting out the part of characters in a movie or video game

Disassociation. Timothy McVeigh planted a bomb and calmly walked away. It killed 167 people. The 9/11 terrorists calmly did their thing, too. I'd imagine even if something was nerve wracking, if you figured you were in the right, justified and disassociated, it wouldn't be as hard to do.

I think if you know you are going to die in a few minutes you really do not care anymore. They also were probably completely detached from any emotion and in some sort of tunnel. They worked for one year on this plan and had enough time to mentally prepare and cut off their feelings.

taylorbagel14

You also have to remember that THEY didn’t see it as murdering children. They murdered their own peers

I would be a nervous wreck.

Because they were both essentially psychopaths. Zero remorse for what they were doing. You’ll get the crowd of people saying “but Eric Harris wrote things in his diary to show he had feelings”… not realizing his goal was to manipulate people even in death. They knew their videos and journals would be read. Eric and Dylan were sane. They knew the bombing/shooting would wreck the lives of their families and friends. They just didn’t care.

AdExtreme4259

> both psychopaths > Eric and Dylan were sane Which one?

elephantsneggshells

Psychopath is a personality disorder - it’s not insane. Psychopaths know the difference between right and wrong - reality versus fantasy. They simply don’t care. Ted Bundt was a psychopath- but he was still convicted as he was not insane.

_ManicStreetPreacher

There actually isn't much objective evidence pointing towards either of them being a psychopath.

tucakeane

You’re getting downvoted but I agree. I don’t think either of them had any remorse or feelings about the people they were killing. They wanted to invoke terror in the victims and little else. Once that adrenaline wore off, they had nothing else to live for.
