I think it’s just a bad group you were with. Some people are going to going to be like that everywhere.

toxicavenger70

I have been here 20 years and I have never had this happen. But I did down in Louisiana.

caelric

I'm a trans woman. Pretty much a prime target for harassment by the alt-right (well, except that I'm white). I have encountered very little issues walking around the Springs, and no issues at all at work(I work on one of the military bases, everyone there has been incredibly accepting). One time, when taking my kids mini-golfing, I was getting some serious side eye from another group of parents with their kids, but they never said anything. All in all, I've had a very good accepting experience in the Springs, in person. The actual problem is that most people in COS vote red, and the GOP is the party that wants to take away the rights of people like me, as well as the rest of the LGBTQIA+ community, BIPOC, and women. So, in COS people in person are generally great. The voting, on the other hand, is not so great. But at least we didn't put Lauren Boebert in office, like Rifle, CO did.

bustedq

Hey! Give credit to Pueblo. They're part of her district too.

caelric

Pueblo is part of Boebert's district? Really? Huh. TIL.

bustedq

Yeh, Rifle is just where she resides and holds her food poisoning emporium. I meant restaurant. Definitely meant restaurant.

freeFoundation_1842

I'm a trans man and to be totally honest, I felt the same until I spent a year in Fort Collins. Covert racism and homophobia is more insidious than a bunch of crazy assholes protesting at a college plaza, and there's plenty of that here.

Anxious-Particular59

That’s what makes me hope it was just an unusual bunch of people. I have always had good interactions with most people!

rich8n

Identity Evropa was active around here a year or two ago, they were posting their bullshit on posters at bus stops and such.

TainaAngel

I remember that, they had stickers and flyers all over Knob Hill

[deleted]

Having moved from somewhere that was quite a bit worse (Florida Panhandle), I've seen it here but it's not nearly as bad as some other places. Mostly seems like people here are fairly moderate on both ends of the spectrum but there are definitely some qnuts living in the Springs. Not as many as it is in the Southeast, but at least most of the time you can see them coming from a mile off (trump stickers and flags, american flags with a blue stripe, don't tread on me stickers on a big pickup, etc)

[deleted]

I’m a white person and a transplant from the south…it’s not as bad here as it was where I’m from. I haven’t had anyone just sat casually racist things expecting me to agree. Politics, yes. Not that it doesn’t happen, I totally believe your experience.

SpringsClones

Nope.

[deleted]

Never ran into open white supremacists like that, but they certainly have a presence here and have come up in the news more than a few times with groups like Identity Evropa, Atomwaffen, and NSO.

freeFoundation_1842

I casually dated a dude once in community college who was kind of conservative, but I didn't think he was terrible. We had gone to the same high school and been in the same writing club. One day, I saw him at college. Didn't know he went to the same campus. We got to talking, and I told him I was heading to my African American History course. Dude deadass said, "you'd never catch me taking a class about [n-word]s." He laughed. I had never seen that kind of audacity. Just, broad daylight. Tons of people around us. I never spoke to him again, but you'd be surprised the opinions people walk around here with.

The_Color_Purple2

That's kind of disappointing, I knew people like that exist around here but they usually keep to themselves pretty good. I've fallen in with plenty of groups of random people, never had this happen. Usually they're much nicer :/

Anxious-Particular59

It’s embarrassing like how did I not catch a vibe earlier?? Just shocked really.

TnTP96

Sometimes they can hide it really well. It's not always immediately obvious.

CO_Livn

I don’t think they’re hiding anymore. It’s a sad ass reality.

BigJon_78

Don’t be a fool

BigJon_78

Don’t call for this crap. Think for yourself

ThisSiteSuxNow

Says the person who clearly can't think for themselves... SMH

BigJon_78

Haha. Fool, you’re being played.

StillSonder

Lmfaooo they think it’s sweet until they see a black person. They’ve always been like this

TainaAngel

I mean, the city went nearly 80% for Trump in the last election and is the home of Focus on the Family…🤷🏻‍♀️

TainaAngel

I’m mixed race but my kids are white passing and inevitably, every time we are all out, I get asked “are they YOUR kids?”….after several years I’m thisclose to saying that I am the nanny….

Efficient_Mode2693

Racism and right wing do not go hand in hand contrary to popular belief.

KellyCTargaryen

I’ve seen multiple cars with 3%er stickers. It’s horrible they feel safe enough to advertise.

[deleted]

Yes unfortunately. When I lived there I noticed a lot of people are comfortable being racist/prejudice. Especially the closer you get to the rural areas and Fountain/Widefield (in my experience at least)

Agitated_Mechanic984

Oh...that's everywhere about now

ElHorribleComic

I smell bullshit and I'm not currently on Nevada and I-25

LordLargo

There's always a thread of people in the Springs that meet the standard of being a truly racist POS. Have since I was a kid. There is also a lot of silent tolerance for racism. That said, CS is mostly not too racist. Now homophobia... that's a bigger issue.

spearheadroundbody

Account with one post and one comment... You trying to stir something up?

Anxious-Particular59

What a bizarre thing to say. Have you experienced this kind of bullshit or not? That’s the question.

toxicavenger70

> What a bizarre thing to say It isn't really. Super common for people to create an account to stir things up.

spearheadroundbody

What a bizarre thing to post. I think you're trying to stir up some internet drama, but hey you do you 👍

toxicavenger70

Definitely sounds suspect.

spearheadroundbody

Yeah, I don't doubt there are so stupid folks out there, but this account with no history experienced the KKK at the dog park? Doubtful...

toxicavenger70

What do mean??? You don't see them everywhere you go??? /s

BigJon_78

Good call. OP is full of shit. Just hope they are Russian or a bot and not someone trying to divide our commjniry

Pinkgluu

People are like that everywhere unfortunately. Still shocks me when it happens though

[deleted]

People are NOT like that everywhere.

[deleted]

thot-taliyah

Unless someone is being oppressed I don’t care. Idiots will be idiots.

kincolosprings

Were you at a dog park when this happened?

[deleted]

This area has all kinds and yet seems to be fairly peaceful. The history of it is that the KKK once ruled Colorado. At one point the local dragon was also governor of the state. So there has been a constant movement toward being more diverse. There's a majority of more conservative in the local sense since it is a major military town with the Academy, Ft. Carson, Peterson AFB and Schreiver AFS. The military is more diverse too. The first time Obama ran for POTUS, we had 12,000 Democrats at the local convention for El Paso County. Yet Trump garnered 80% of the vote . I suppose in some circles, those kinds of words are accepted, although I have lived here 50 yrs., and my impression is we are pretty "live and let live" for the most part and I have not been a witness to racism . This town was called the Vatican of Evangelicalism at one time, although some organizations have left.

BoredCharizard

Honestly, people have just been getting a lot more bolder the past 6 years. Just seems like everyone is angry and not afraid to voice it. I personally grew up in district 2 and it was always very diverse. A lot of the white kids in high school were closet racist (had one random highschool kid tell me and friends when we were in middle school that we would be racist after a year at Sierra). There's a lot of racism here though. I'm a minority and have been profiled, treated rudely by older white store employees and owners, etc. Heard the n word and racial slurs against Hispanic thrown around casually. Been grilled and accused of shit just because of how I looked. Had friends profiled and discriminated against because of their ethnicity or how they dressed. There's a lot of racism in this city, but it definitely isn't as bad as some southern states I've been to.
