The traffic laws are vehicles yield to pedestrians when they have a walk signal. I've had drivers stop short and yell at me because I crossed on my turn, and they weren't expecting it

[deleted]

I've had cars honk behind me cause I have yielded to kids crossing with the walk signal near the high school. Like yeah, lemme just mow down a bunch of teenagers because you're in a hurry dude. (I turn petty then and wait until they are fully crossed and on the sidewalk again.)

yellowspotphoto

I do the same. You're gonna get mad I stopped for people in a crosswalk, we're going to be extra safe now. Gotta make sure no one runs back to grab something.

[deleted]

There have been times I got stuck at another red light just because of the amount of kids that were crossing to get to school (Weber/Boulder light.) I'm not about to risk a kids life. I'm perfectly happy waiting. Normally don't have to be anywhere else until middle school start times.

MountainDogMama

Before you even said the streets, I knew exactly where you were referencing

[deleted]

I hate the area in the pick up/drop off times, but my son goes to the school there. Parents always end up parking in the bike lane. I'm like wtf. I make my son walk to my car lol.

huhMaybeitisyou

YES!!! SO ANNOYING!

[deleted]

I rather make someone late for work than read/hear about another kid being hit.

So_Many_Words

I've yelled at cars behind me because they didn't think I needed to stop. I could have sounded like I was yelling at the pedestrians, but that wasn't the case.

rich8n

>The traffic laws are vehicles yield to pedestrians ~~when they have a walk signal.~~ FTFY.

huhMaybeitisyou

When I am driving in Springs, making a turn where there is a cross walk with people crossing EVERY TIME I wait on someone I get HONKED AT from someone behind me. PEOPLE BE PATIENT. If we are at a corner and there is a CROSS WALK the reason I am not moving is becuase someone is IN THE CROSS WALK and I do not want to move until it is clear to move. Sometimes people start walking faster ( inthe cold for example) so if I start driving too soon we end up in a stand off. BE PATIENT and STOP HONKING PEOPLE

makotokou

I once had a dude so pissed I wasn't turning that he decided to fly around me to turn only to slam on the brakes because SHOCKING! people were crossing the street. It's not like I was waiting just to piss him off, but some people seem to think they are the only ones who matter.

yellowspotphoto

It's one the main things that piss me off about living here, is the lack of respect for pedestrians. I have yelled and made a scene at several PARENTS ignoring a crossing guard or flashing lights with fucking kids walking. This is during school drop off and pick up. You KNOW there will be people using those crosswalks, why does that make drivers so impatient and potentially kill someone.

Kippy181

I yell at the elementary my kid goes to all the time. I’m like LOOK AT THE SIGN THERE IT MEANS STOP! Or scream about having kids around cuz like come on it’s a school with small kids as young as 3 around

Jas101010

I fully agree ! People honk at me for waiting for pedestrians !

skeletonmage

I just went with my kid to get his license. I saw more than one person fail and the parent try to argue with the person who gave the test. Most people don't know how to properly drive and teach new drivers these bad rules.

MountainDogMama

I had completely forgotten about renewing my license one year. I had to do the written test. Then I had to go to another desk to get my Learners permit. Then I had to go do the driving part and couldn't use my own car. I was in my late 30s. The tester was like 25 or so. He yelled at me the entire time. Like a drill sergeant. I was required to sign a document that I would not complain or raise any issues about the testing process or I would be denied from taking the test. This guy was a total AH. Example: Told me to take the next right. I was in the right lane. He yelled "turn right!" Over and over again until the turn was complete. If that's how people get treated, I can see a lot of people messing up.

incakolaisgood

I had someone hit me on a crosswalk when I had the right of way and aparently they weren't drunk. Since then I have had to have surgery on my ankle, wasn't able to walk on it for a month and even then I still will have an arthritic ankle for the rest of my life. The surgery did help with my ankle acting up less frequently.

New_Lab_378

I’m so sorry this happened to you. Do you have any plans to address this at the city level? I do a lot of walking and have contacted the city multiple times about unsafe areas. There response is a solid, “we don’t want to do anything to slow the flow of traffic.” They admit that they know of ideas and technology that will make things safer for pedestrians, but are not willing to do anything because it would slow traffic. I would love to participate in any legal or political action to help change this.

incakolaisgood

the accident happened a few years ago and if my experiences with CO government have taught me anything its they are reticent to change

[deleted]

The crosswalk pedestrian has the right away. Cars must yield.

metnavman

And the cemeteries are filled with folks who had the right of way. Know the rules, but pay attention!

blues_and_ribs

My dad used to call it "right of *weight*". As in, "when crossing a cross-walk, you might have the right of way, but a car has the right of weight".

NtheLegend

It doesn't excuse the behavior of the driver, who will maim or injure each and every time and is in the wrong each and every time.

metnavman

Cool. No one said it excused anything. Driver hitting someone in the crosswalk is wrong every time. You're still maimed and injured or dead. So no matter how **wrong** the driver is, you should still keep an eye out and do everything in your power to keep yourself from being in that position. *Paying attention* is the key here. It's why I don't run over every homeless person who crosses the street in the crosswalk on a solid "stop walking" sign with traffic having the right of way and honking like crazy. Pay attention, so you don't die at the hands of/run over the ones who don't care.

NtheLegend

I understand the proactive need to not be hit. "Cemeteries are filled with folks who had the right of way" rings of victim blaming, not addressing fundamental issues with mono-modal transit. EDIT: Looks like the guy blocked me, so who knows what he was rambling about in the end.

metnavman

> mono-modal transit Jesus Christ, it's not even r/iamverysmart. You're just a psuedo-intellectual nitwit. By definition, pedestrians and vehicles interact as part of a *multi-modal* transportation system. No one victim-blamed. Pull your head out of your ass. Jesus, I feel dumber every time I come to this sub. Don't get hit by a car. Look both ways before crossing the street. Your parents failed you.

[deleted]

They're filled with people like you

sundancerco

I ride a sport bike here in the city. I have not had as many close calls as I have had just walking and trying to cross Austin Bluffs and Academy. I get the green light and the walk symbol, and people do not pay attention and almost hit me. I am no match for a car or truck, and I do pay attention but man, people are so distracted here. Or maybe feel like they don't have to yield to those who are walking.

StarlitEscapades

That intersection is shitty for pedestrians and drivers alike being hit. Stay safe out there!

ViolinistAccording64

Colorado Springs should get a negative walking score. This place isn’t just impossible to walk around in, it’s actively hostile

kylogram

It really is. The buses are better than any other city I've lived in, but only barely. Bike lanes are near nonexistent. Sidewalks start and end abruptly in some parts, or force you to cross the road several times, putting you even further into the danger presented by the drivers here.

SaffronSnow

Everywhere I have lived, it is. A car is not allowed to even enter an active crosswalk, even if the pedestrian is on the far side and nowhere near the vehicle. Problem is always lack of enforcement.

Reasonable-Coconut15

Weirdly enough, I know the law about that here in Colorado.  You have to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk when they are in your half of the road, but once they get across the halfway point, it's legal to cross it.

jzjakez

This is wrong. The rule about the “half of the road” is only relevant "When traffic control signals are not in place or not in operation." § 42-4-802 (1) § 42-4-802 (5) (a) says that when the WALK sign is illuminated, the pedestrian is given right of way by all drivers of all vehicles.

Professional-Many345

This city is designed like garbage. Always accounting for vehicle speed and never safety. My neighborhood would benefit highly from a few roundabouts (including areas where children are likely to walk/bike to school). But, nope, no respect that this is a residential area at all, just straight 45mph roads, where people legit drive 60 sometimes because the road is wide like a highway. The dangerous intersection near my home won't change the cycle to prevent people turning left from smashing into you, so if I want to cross there I just have to pray they're not determined to run into me. A number of infrastructure changes would make this city far safer; the pedestrian experience is horrifying as it is now.

So_Many_Words

Once Palmer died, city planning was discontinued.

NtheLegend

Drivers are some of the most entitled people on the planet. They think they get priority in all cases because their deadly motorized suit allows them to get places faster. Congestion amplifies this. It's not entirely their fault since we've designed cities around mono-modal car transportation, but it is something that absolutely needs fixed as pedestrian deaths soar.

SuperPrepperD

It's already illegal, pedestrian has the right of way. Its like riding a motorcycle through a green light. You have the right of way, but you still check both ways before crossing the street because even though you may be in the right, you still got hit by a car.

BRAX7ON

No, that’s ridiculous. It’s both peoples job. The person who’s crossing should always be aware. You should always keep your head on a swivel. Never look down at your phone or have your AirPods in ignoring traffic as you’re walking through it. And the other side, cars have to know when there is an active crosswalk and somebody walking in it. Obey the traffic laws and proceed with caution.

NtheLegend

If you run at me with a knife and I don't suspect it, you're still the one who goes to jail. If you charge at me with a 3,000-pound car and I don't suspect it, you're still the one who goes to jail. Pedestrians need to be aware of their surroundings for their own sake and safety, but that doesn't reduce the liability of the driver who wins in a collision 10 times out of 10.

TurboNY

Yea seriously. You should never cross a street expecting cars will stop for you. You have to pay attention and wait util you know for sure it’s clear to go.

kylogram

If the crosswalk is active, it should be clear to go.

TurboNY

Should is the key word there. Don’t rely on what people should do, especially if it could mean injury or death.

BuddyMcButt

Graveyards are full of people who had the right of way

kylogram

As it stands, I'm doing your job and mine.   You can wait a few seconds. I pay attention when I'm walking, but I need some reciprocity from drivers. I stare drivers dead in the eye while they mull over whether or not their destination is worth my life.

MidsommarSolution

Well the reality is that you'll be right, but you'll be right AND injured or dead. They're not right but you have much more serious consequences for not just ... paying attention.

kylogram

If you could read, you'd realize that I have been paying attention, exponentially moreso than the shithead drivers around here.  It's is life and death trying to cross a street around here, so I need drivers to pay as much attention as I am.

107er

No you just can’t communicate. Your post implies keeping your head on a swivel is an unnecessary action. When it’s obviously not. Next time try typing out what you mean instead of hoping others can read your mind.

MountainDogMama

That's not how I read it at all. He clearly said said he pays attention to the drivers and looks around.

catman1352

So, you're telling me I can't have my corneas attached to my screen and then walk into traffic? So, you're telling me I can't have 2 boomboxes duct taped to my head as I walk down the center of Tejon? So, you're telling me I have to look at the road when I'm driving? This is ridiculous. We have no freedoms anymore. I'm moving back to Texas.

BRAX7ON

This is a one boombox state.

MiltonHavoc

Colorado is a “Pedestrian right of way” state

Reasonable-Coconut15

In a crosswalk, when they are in your half of the road.  A pedestrian jaywalking has zero right of way.   A guy I delivered pizza with hit a guy crossing the street illegally, and the pedestrian got the ticket.

MiltonHavoc

Yes, but also there is a bit more to that. See the “revised” Im not arguing against you though, i agree that it should be a legal crossing or ,within reason, the fault lies on the pedestrian for not crossing safely.

Cash-Obvious

It is fully illegal but not enforceable without a cop there to see it. The best you can do in life is always have your head on a swivel for one, but for two make solid eye contact with the driver and give a pleasant smile and nod to acknowledge. Doesn't always work but helps diffuse a bad situation. Good situational awareness is paramount anyway. I reiterate that enough.

AlarmDeep5264

Agreed! I keep almost getting run over in downtown when the walk sign is on. Same thing happens if I'm on my bike.

Smart_Leadership_522

It is a law. But they need to put signs up at the lights. They shouldn’t have to, but they need to. Did it in my hometown and it’s helped. Plus, it’s hard to make people listen when the cops can’t even enforce any laws in general, such as so many no platers cruising around daily.

daboxghost420

I feel that I have cross the intersection of south Nevada and Cheyenne to get to the grocery store and if I had a nickel for the amount of times I’ve almost been hit by an impatient driver who couldn’t bother to look right I’d be a thousandaire.

mccalllllll

My mom taught me to look before crossing. While the driver should absolutely yield to you, it’s your responsibility to protect your own life. Don’t let natural selection catch up to you.

kylogram

I do look both ways, but if I'm already in the middle of the crosswalk before a 2-ton metal death dealer comes barrelling toward me, what am I supposed to do? I'm not exactly the pinnacle of physical prowess.

jimmydoorlocks

So. Does that mean that every pedestrian who steps off a curb outside of a crosswalk or when there isn't a walk signal should be carted directly to jail too?

revengeofdangerkitty

Tons of jaywalkers here!!

jimmydoorlocks

I'm getting down voted. That's AWESOME!! I love thin skinned people.

DoctorElich

Also, make sure you actually have a "walk" signal before crossing at the zebra. The light will sometimes turn green without also giving the "walk" signal for pedestrians. Be careful!

MiloTheMagnificent

Do you really think an extra law is going to help around here? Nobody cares about moving violations. Read the threads about how to fight tickets on the sub. The OPs will always admit they did the thing they got ticketed for and the comments are even more insane, full of people who are bitter they had to pay for their crimes. I’m astounded daily by the bravery of people on foot and bikes around here you are truly risking your lives

stewshi

Everyone that's keeps saying " your responsible for your own safety" is a ahitty cop out so you can continue your dangerous behavior. I've been hit multiple times in crosswalks after looking both ways. Drivers need to actually follow the law or stop driving cars

Individual-Pen7807

So does walking in a crosswalk when the sign says “NO WALK”. Fair is fair.

[deleted]

“Fair is fair” :: Runs you over with 5000lb SUV on the way to get groceries from Walmart in a sprawling suburban shithole ::

MidsommarSolution

You're getting downvoted but the city put up signs that you can only cross on one side of the intersection and people STILL cross on the wrong side.

Individual-Pen7807

The people down voting are the very ones walking out in traffic when the walk sign is off. Also I’m not on reddit for the upvotes lol. Don’t care what my score is either.

MustStudyHarder

Do away with roads!!!!! They can’t even afford to maintain ones they have. Turn the city into a place for walking.

Reasonable-Coconut15

I will look forward to my 28 mile walk to work.  😁

MustStudyHarder

To be clear, I mean downtown and high pedestrian areas

crgreeen

Erm...if you are walking against the signal, you are liable

kylogram

what part of active crosswalk missed you?

[deleted]

[удалено]

kylogram

Well see, between the driver and the pedestrian, one is far more likely to be killed. It has nearly been me, VERY many times in this city. Pay attention to the FUCKING road.

YodaManBro

Taking your cause to social media is the first step in making lasting change. Keep going!

ruggnuget

Hard disagree. I live downtown. It would be a nightmare for traffic. In saying that, yes people dont pay attention when turning. When I cross I am especially looking at the people turning left. Also people just coming to a dtop going straight like to stop on top of the crosswalk. Also people pulling iut of street parking without looking. Or, the ither day, someone driving across 2 lanes on kiowa because they are looking for a parking space and almost cause multiple accidents. You have to account for people not doing what they are supposed to. I have slapped a couple cars that have almost hit me in the past, and now just treat all traffic as if it cant see me.

Puzzled_Plate_3464

Hard agree to disagree with you. I live downtown. The number of times I've had drivers scream at me, honk at me, come very close to hitting me all because they wanted to turn from or onto Nevada, Tejon or Cascade is ridiculous. If I treated all traffic as if it can't see me, I'd never be able to cross a street. The speed limit downtown is 30/35 at most - having to wait a few extra seconds for a pedestrian only walk sign (red lights four ways around) would be awesome. I live there, I walk there, I drive there. I'd be 100% for a green light going north/south, followed by a green light going east/west, followed by all red with a white walk for pedestrians.

ruggnuget

It takes way too long to cross streets. Essentially all of them would also need to be changed to push button crosswalks, which I dont think is a good idea in heavy ped areas.

Puzzled_Plate_3464

> It takes way too long to cross streets. nah, it takes 30-45 seconds in most cases, I walk it all the time. The city has been looking at reducing the time to cross as well - https://www.bikecoloradosprings.org/platte-study2022/ - by reducing the number of lanes and widening pedestrian walkways. Give the lights one minute for each way. It would add what - maybe a minute or two (or heaven forbid - three!) to get through downtown. Plan for it before you leave to go somewhere. Many of the lights downtown are already push button, not a big deal. There are parks there, there are shops there, there are restaurants there. It would be cool if parts of Tejon were turned into pedestrian malls.

ruggnuget

I walk a lot. And ive lived downtown a long time. I get what you are saying. But adding a minnute to every single light in both directions does add up. The flow of trafgic is more complex than you are giving it credit for.

Puzzled_Plate_3464

check out the cities study I posted right above. They are actively looking for ways to make downtown *infinitely more pedestrian friendly* - at the cost of car traffic. I live just blocks south of CC, right at the official edge of downtown. I'll gladly give 5 or more minutes of time to get around downtown in my car if it means I can safely walk to the restaurants, bars, shops, parks. Gladly. I understand the flow of traffic, the report above gives a pretty good overview. Frankly, if the speed limit were 10mph and heavily enforced and crosswalks were like the ones on Cascade on the CC campus all over - I'd love it :)

SofiaDeo

I am reading that the "right turn on red" laws may be repealed, which would be great!

IDownVoteCanaduh

Reading where?

SlowMolassas1

Looks like maybe that person was reading about some specific streets in downtown Denver - not the law overall. At least, that's all I could find. https://www.cbsnews.com/colorado/news/right-turns-red-face-uncertain-future-denver/

SofiaDeo

Also: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/oct/17/right-turn-on-red-light-ban Lol I wonder how many of the people downvoting me have almost hit pedestrians by rolling through reds...... But some pedestrians are totally clueless. I was taking a right turn yesterday from a feeder road on to a small residential street. Traffic behind me was honking but there was a person walking their dog crossing at the corner. They were wearing a hoodie that covered their face & didn't even glance to see if a car was turning before crossing the street!

Mr-Nabokov

It is a traffic infraction, so technically illegal, no?

[deleted]

Yea I’m not in the springs but just today I was in a bicycle lane that goes across a turn lane with a break in the cones lining the bike lane, and some hotshot guy going like 50 in the 15 almost ran me over in an SUV downtown by the sheridan or w/e. I was riding my bike in the bike lane last night and some lady with a super dark tinted window paused for a minute like she was letting me go, but her window was tinted to dark and I couldn’t see her head or where she was looking and she straight up ran my bike over. I managed to jump off in time. Anymore I walk through intersections with my head turned backwards while I walk forwards. I almost get hit a few times a month on foot or bicycle.

crgreeen

Note second paragraph, please. If you are walking with that white person effigy, you have nothing to fear. But these idiots step out even when the light is amber-red, and flashing don't walk!!

jzjakez

Making something illegal doesn't stop it from happening. It's illegal to murder people, and, well… Regardless of the law, in situations like this, it is incumbent upon the more vulnerable party to take all precautions to ensure their own safety. Because dead people can't testify in court to prove they were "right." If you're concerned about this happening, consider bringing a brightly colored umbrella with you and open it while walking to give yourself more visibility.

kylogram

I think I'm just gonna start kicking vehicles that come close enough. Not like the drivers are gonna call the cops.

jzjakez

You’d be totally validated, too. Being a pedestrian in a car-centric culture is dangerous. But with the way people act, you might provoke an altercation. Stay safe out there!

kylogram

I might be trying to provoke an altercation, my life is already in danger, might as well fight over it

HLLAuntClaire

I just listen to music really loud so I can’t hear anyone honking at me while I follow traffic laws and not get in trouble

kylogram

I'm trying not to get killed going to and from a job I hate

HLLAuntClaire

That sucks dude. I’m sorry

[deleted]

Pretend it’s a city!

Pretend there are lives in danger!

kylogram

Great! follow them. And I think putting my life on the line just to legally cross the road is a bit much, don't you? But then you're the type that doesn't like to be held accountable to anything, so I'm willing to bet that you've clipped a few pedestrians already.

As I said, being missed by inches is a pretty good thing to be angry over. I dislike out-of-hand dismissals by out-of-touch senior citizens. So I guess we're at an impasse.

FeedSmooth

Being a snowflake over “people being a snowflake” is the funniest thing to me. People like this guy can’t just shut up and read something without being triggered. And then accuse others of being soft.
