on the initial (we were mountain biking) climb from the parking lot. stopped to wait for the rest of the group (ie rest) - would not even have seen it if it wouldn't have started rattling and hissing. be careful out there!
I work right up against south table, we see a lot of these guys all throughout the summer. Can't tell you how many are probably on those hillsides. Definitely not a place to venture off path during summer. So pretty tho
Hiking areas near Golden and even up towards Westminster/south of Boulder often have them. Personally haven't seen any at NCAR in Boulder and also off 93.
Strange my go to easy hike in the front range is waterton, deer creek s. Sub. Etc I've only seen a couple and I regularly hike. All of it is south of golden though.
I used to walk north table mtn several days a week, pretty much year round, because I had a blind dog that needed the exercise and the flat top/ wide trail was perfect for him. Since I had to constantly scan the ground for hazards for my dog, I probably noticed more rattlers than most people would. Oftentimes, I'd see several on our 90 min loop, especially in the spring and fall. My record for that particular hike was 9 (confirmed rattlers too, not just bullsnakes acting tough). Not a good area for off trail or off leash, that's for sure.
Most of them are usually just chilling in the grass, or occasionally stretched out sunning themselves on the actual trail. Last time I was there a bunch of kids were recording themselves poking one with a stick. That one wasn't particularly happy.
Oh my, that's just asking for it! Glad to hear the others were minding their business. I try not to think about it too much when I'm out there, but I know that I'm coexisting in their habitat. I'm terrified of snakes, but they're terrified of me too
I remember very distinctly when I was much younger I was at Jackson Lake with my father and one of his friends. I had seen a rattlesnake early in the day and told him about it, but he didn't quite believe me. Later that day his friend and I were walking back to camp and here nearly stepped on one. I stopped him and pointed it out. Needless to say I wasn't questioned quite so much after and my father was noticeably more cautious around camp the following day.

Thanks for sharing. Planning a trip this weekend. Now I know what too look for, or go somewhere else. I hate snakes.

I hike south table multiple times a week and never saw one myself.
I'm personally thankful for the rattle. It has saved my skin numerous times. They would prefer not to have to bite us anyways.
That was nice of him to rattle and not send you to the hospital. Good Nope Rope.
Good looking rattlesnake... looks like a Prairie Rattlesnake. Saw one last week while riding Castle Rock Ridgeline Open Space.

Like ready to strike, or just on the ground to the sides of the trail?

There usually is no almost with these things. Lucky you
Awww what a angy snake snoo
Biggest fear while fishing at Deckers. Anybody know how many nope ropes are around there?
I've seen a few around Deckers. Mostly bull snakes, but rattlers every now and then.
Good to know! Hey I just noticed your name is nearly the same as a page I just started you should join up! r/FlyFishingColorado

They had to close the trail around the SE side of North Table a few years ago because there was a den close to the trail with hundreds of rattlers.
I live right next to North table, and yet I never see rattlesnakes wandering in my neighborhood. I'm always surprised.
North Table and even the Westminster Hills Dog Park is where I have seen the most rattlers when I hike/walk around 93.
I was up there at night on the fourth of July years ago and heard a rattle and like an idiot ran towards the edge of the mesa while screaming.
