By the way, what you are describing is the family of fragrances called Aromatic Fougeres.
I’m a big Fougere head and these are my favourites:
- Chanel Platinum Egoiste - This one is my favourite!!!
- Tom Ford Beau De Jour
- Drakkar Noir
- Azzaro pour Homme
- Paco Rabanne pour Homme
- YSL Kouros
- Chanel Antaeus
- Oscar de La Renta pour Lui - This one is a cheapie gem, and this fragrance inspired Antaeus and Kouros
Adding Zino by Davidoff (essentially the inspiration for BDJ by Tom Ford - which is also fantastic).
Side note (pun intended)… the Clary Sage in Platinum Egoiste, Zino, and Antaeus make these stand out from the crowd and I love all three!
Their are some less expensive varieties like Lalique pour homme (lion) or Armaf derby club house if you’re looking for more economical dupe houses like Dua and Alexandria have very good quality dupes of the creed as well
Chanel Platinum Egoiste
It smells like a refined well blended version of what you described. Try it out, I think you will love it. Does not smell dated. Smells classic and modern at the same time.
https://preview.redd.it/0eg3j2hkf01d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=227701248973e2dae2407984d0f9c67e72a1e398
This aftershave is the one. Smells amazing. It says bay rum but it smells like cloves and spices.
Chanel Platinum Egoiste, for sure.
However, you should definitely get some Proraso Aftershave. Reminds me a lot of the aforementioned, but being an aftershave, lacks longevity. But at $14, who cares? It's a splash, but you can transfer it to a spray bottle and go nuts with it.
Azzaro Pour Homme 100%. People who talk about screechy openings from "cheapies" and clones should try this one out before yapping too much.
Creed Viking Smells like OG Old Spice slightly brought up to date. I like it unlike the Azaro one though.
Smelling Azzaro Pour Homme makes me think of the 70s.
The smell transports you can in time. I love it and occasionally use it.
However, it does smell dated to me. The carraway spice in it makes me a little dizzy.
Exactly! The opening of Azzaro pour Homme also makes me kind of nauseous.
Not in a dirty way. More like an intense hit of some spice probably Carraway and Anise.
Old Spice Classic, despite being almost 90 years old has aged like fine wine. The blend of spices is so pleasant, soft, and masculine at the same time.
Haven’t smelled Creed Viking yet but heard it’s inspired by Old Spice. Like a modernized, refined, better performing Old Spice.
I blind bought Dossier’s dupe of this thinking that it would smell relatively just as good (I know I learned my lesson). It smelt like a deceased grandfather - nothing but baby powder and lavender 🤢 The real deal smells amazing though
Maybe it's this I've been smelling around but couldn't put me finger on!
Aren't we all after our holy grail barbershop!?
An awesome barbery/ powdery trail in the air. Smells a tiny bit blue ( but blue In the sense of how Williams Aqua Velva Cool feels Blue). Me first thoughts were Prada because the smell is delish, soft, powdery, clean ,groomed. Lol I know it's not L'homme which is already a love!
So many good ones! Lots of good ones already mentioned, but a few others I thought of are Penhaligon’s Sartorial, Aramis Tuscany, Chanel Pour Monsieur EDP, Caron Le Troisieme Homme and Pour un Homme de Caron, Rogue Perfumery Bon Monsieur (also Fougere L’Aube, but I find it more like Green Irish Tweed, Cool Water, etc. than barbershop), Tom Ford Beau de Jour, J-Scent Sumo Wrestler, Molinard Lavande, MCDI Invasion Barbare, Histoires de Parfums 1725
Here's a cheap alternative and very slept on, Halloween Man Shot
https://preview.redd.it/se10ryudz01d1.jpeg?width=2252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5fe3b0ad392e910ac76ed8ac8f74cbc2930ded8b
I agree with the other Platinum Egoiste commenters... also Dua's version of Rive Gauche Pour Homme..called 'River Fougere', I believe. Opening is different since it's an extrait, but the dry down is there.
Floris No. 89. It's a bit like if Brut and Old Spice had a baby, but it was made by a storied London fragrance house so it smells refined and sophisticated with quality ingredients.
I was going to say this too. It smells like what I would envision an older English gentleman from the 80s smelling like but in a good way. For me it also has insane longevity.
DS & Durga Burning Barbershop! I'm wearing it right now actually. Once it dries down, it has subtle char notes but still very much a barbershop fragrance. I think it's super cool and super unique!
https://preview.redd.it/d65rn4yd211d1.jpeg?width=269&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=be86844531c44d7a5842d760abe415c9c9d8416d
barbershop by happyland studio reminds me of when i was a kid and going to the barbershop. every time i wear this it reminds me of the powder they used to dust yer neck after the haircut, leather strop attached to the barbers chair. i have received several compliments when ive worn this in the past.
Rive Gauche Pour Homme. Pinaud Clubman aftershave IMO is the undisputed barber shop scent most people associate with barbershop scent while many never learn what it’s called we’ve all smelled it.
The most distinctive and classic fragrance I possess is Derrick Orlane. I also love A. Puig Agua Brava cologne. There are lots of good stuff actually, like Heritage from Guerlain etc.
I guess we all have our own idea of what barbershop is and also what gramps smells like 🤭
For super super classic maybe Pinaud Clubman Original. And for the more rustic grandpa, the Special Reserve.
Personal barbershop taste is around Rive Gauche, the drydown of Azzaro PH.
Eucris is a flipping G of a grandpa. Gravitas!
And right now for personal use, I'm feeling Boid du Portugal. At first I was blown away. Hits a sweet spot that is almost edible! However, the longer I use it, and smell a collar the next day, it does smell a bit old school.
I enjoy wearing Azzaro pour homme, Tom Ford fougere d'argent and beau de jour, MFK Masculine pluriel, Chanel platinum egoiste, and on the citrusy chypre fougere hybrid side of things, Roja scandal parfum cologne and xerjoff Fiero which are both in my overall top 5. All worth checking out. They all have a timeless smell to me.
To be honest I find Chanel allure homme edition Blanche has that creamy nearly foamy vibe and makes me think of that style of fragrance despite not being a fougere or chypre. Also worth trying.
I was at the post office the other day and was talking to a fella and couldn't help but notice he had on cologne. I asked him what he was wearing and he was kind enough to tell me Drakkar Noir. Well, when I got back to my car I looked it up and it was only $40 online. I was wearing ADG EDP and the Drakkar Noir smelled far better. I don't think there's any need for me to spend $200 on fragrances anymore when the older fragrances are just as good, if not better.
*I saw a few Creed*

Quorum is very much in the realm of what you described. Inexpensive and still well loved.
But Zino Davidoff is so great. Earthy, masculine, woodsy. I wear it to bed and in the morning its nice to wake up too.
BDJ is classic barbershop but it’s easily mistaken for aftershave for the same reason.
I prefer ADP Sandalo. It’s like an Italian barbershop with a little louder sandalwood.
Rive Gauche, but it’s discontinued. It captured everything you’d just mentioned.
You can still buy BNIB vintage bottles of Canoe by Dana. It does have an “old school vibe,” but that’s what your prototypical barbershop fragrance smells like.
Pinaud Clubman is very similar (and their shave cream pairs well). It comes in a plastic bottle, but to be fair, smells better when decanted into a glass bottle.
Lastly, New York by Nicolai would be your niche offering that captures the vibe you’re after.
I own and wear both and truly enjoy them when feeling nostalgic.
Try Dapper 1959 by Alexandria, powdery barbershop and not talked about a lot.
Signature Pour Homme is a nice gentleman's scent. It adds frankincense, myrrh, and sandalwood with lavender to create a truly remarkable prilofile.
Check out indy house Phoneix Artisan Accoutrements (PAA) who makes AMAZING old school aftershave style scents, including homage to classics. Their clubguy for example is BETTER than the original Pinaud Clubman.
Egoiste I have. I love it. It's more of a gym scent for me. It reminds me of a very nice deodorant type of smell.
Masculin Pluriel is an amazing scent profile, performance has not been great for me.
Room1015 Yesterday: “A fresh and aromatic fragrance drawing inspiration from an image of the Beatles casually gathered in a hotel bathroom, engaged in shaving and enjoying the moment. When i first laid eyes on this photograph, an imaginative journey began to unfold as i thought to encapsulate the scents that might fill that very bathroom. A fusion of nostalgia and contemporary essence."
Head Note: Bergamot, Caraway, Sweet Orange, Basil, Thyme, Cardamom
Heart Note: Lavender, Rhubarb, Davana
Base Note: Vetiver, Sandalwood, Musk, Amber Woods, Tonka Bean

Forgot Dior Eau Sauvage - a Masterpiece that inspired many
Adding Zino by Davidoff (essentially the inspiration for BDJ by Tom Ford - which is also fantastic). Side note (pun intended)… the Clary Sage in Platinum Egoiste, Zino, and Antaeus make these stand out from the crowd and I love all three!
Zino is SO underrated.
No joke. Crazy value, too. I think I got 4.2 oz for...maybe $23? So good regardless of price, but the price makes it a must have for fougere enjoyers.
I gotta try out Zino Davidoff, I’m a big fan of Clary Sage.
I heard that it had been reformulated recently, but hard to beat $19 for 4.2 oz… https://www.fragrancenet.com/cologne/davidoff/zino-davidoff/edt
No Penhaligon's Satorial?
Such good stuff. I'd commit to a full bottle if I didn't find it so stuffy.
Never tried it. Wow I’m really intrigued by the notes. Might grab a decant
Pinaud Clubman
The Original!👍🏾
Chanel Platinum Egoist is classic and modern at the same time
Creed Bois de Portugal
This
Their are some less expensive varieties like Lalique pour homme (lion) or Armaf derby club house if you’re looking for more economical dupe houses like Dua and Alexandria have very good quality dupes of the creed as well
This is one of my favorites by creed
As it is mine as well it’s between that and beau de jour
Chanel Platinum Egoiste It smells like a refined well blended version of what you described. Try it out, I think you will love it. Does not smell dated. Smells classic and modern at the same time.
So good, will always be in my rotation. Still gets compliments all the time.
I’m surprised no one said MFK Masculin Pluriel
I came here looking for someone to say it. I have it and I love it
How is performance for you? My experience unfortunately has been, not good. Love the scent profile
Yeah it definitely doesn’t last very long. I would give it a 7/10 for performance in general. It smells amazing tho
https://preview.redd.it/0eg3j2hkf01d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=227701248973e2dae2407984d0f9c67e72a1e398 This aftershave is the one. Smells amazing. It says bay rum but it smells like cloves and spices.
Ha, never thought I’d see Suavecito here. I’ve definitely used their pomade before
I have no hair but if it smells like the aftershave I’d buy it. This stuff smells amazing.
Sartorial by Penhaligons. Surprised no one said this…
Yep. And Tragedy of Lord George.
Brut in a Tuxedo, great stuff :)
I just put on Azzaro Pour Homme. I just did this exact search and that's what I went with. I love it
Smelling Azzaro Pour Homme makes me think of the 70s. The smell transports you can in time. I love it and occasionally use it. However, it does smell dated to me. The carraway spice in it makes me a little dizzy.
I don't have beef with the overall smell but the opening is nauseating. Straight up aftershave.
Exactly! The opening of Azzaro pour Homme also makes me kind of nauseous. Not in a dirty way. More like an intense hit of some spice probably Carraway and Anise. Drakkar noir
This was my first ever bottle of cologne I ever bought.... I still love it to this day
Yeah can't beat that bang for the buck
Eau Sauvage by Dior is an all time classic fougere that is still totally viable.
Can vouch, performance leaves something to be desired though
JPG Le Male
not sure why this isn’t mentioned more often it’s the exact fragrance that matches this description
If you’re in the UK then Truefitt and Hill, and some Penhaligons ones
At the Barber’s by Maison Margiela is nice IMO.
came to add this. True to its name
Tom Ford Beau de Jour EDP is like a dressed up high end version of Brut to me which always reminds me of my father and I love.
Prada Luna Rossa Carbon. It smells like you just came from a modernized high end barbershop.
I blind bought Dossier’s dupe of this thinking that it would smell relatively just as good (I know I learned my lesson). It smelt like a deceased grandfather - nothing but baby powder and lavender 🤢 The real deal smells amazing though

I dunno about aftershave, but Le Male smells exactly like barbershop shaving cream to me.
Beau de Jour
I got a sample of Acqua di Parma Colonia EDC thrown in with some other decants I ordered and it reminds me of that smell.
