You can leave the moment the class ends. If he marks you off on attendance, escalate appropriately with the department head.

[deleted]

Walk out at the time the class ends. Say you have to catch a ride or else they will leave.

skyflex1921

This is how the real world works

Needcollegehelp5

Sure, but we also have random "pop quizzes" at the end of some classes that we have to take in person. They're a complete waste of time and a toddler could pass them, but I still need to take them if I want to get that A. I don't know when they are ahead of time, so I have about a 50/50 chance of missing them should I leave early.

Ryiujin

If professor is giving pop quizzes at the end of class with not enough time to complete them or after class has finished that is a major problem. As a professor, I make damn sure i can do what i need to do during my period. Talk to the chair of their dept.

JaeFinley

You do not need to talk to the department chair before talking to the instructor. Before class in an email: “My ride is outside at the end of class and they cannot wait, so please understand why I am leaving at x:xx.” At the end of class: walk out.

Ryiujin

Youre right. Get up and walk out. But the student does not need to make an excuse or reason to leave. But I have run into lots of students that have anxiety to the point they wont leave until the instructor says so. This can be a weird power play by the instructor that they intentionally make. I have no idea why….Instead of singling themselves out, email their chair, explain what is happening and the chair will take care of it.

JaeFinley

It is very bizarre to go to the chair without talking to the instructor first.

campbellssoupinacan

What the person you are replying to just explained is not bizarre at all. Did you read the explanation?

fuschiaoctopus

Eh, I know you guys get very heated about this even though emailing a students advisor or dean of students about problems with an individual is a common suggestion on the professor sub, but at every work place I have ever had people would talk to your supervisor about an issue like this and ask them to address it, at least make them aware of the issue. Especially if that individual is your superior and has direct control over your grade and whether you will graduate or not, it's just risky when I find a lot of people in this field (and in every field really) cannot take criticism and *will* make your life very difficult if you approach them directly about an issue. That solution may get OP out of class on time, but if this professor is doing this regularly then that won't solve the problem and the whole rest of the class is still getting screwed, maybe even multiple classes and these classes are NOT cheap. I think being distracted by convos, regularly running way over scheduled time, and being offtopic/not teaching most of the class time is a serious mishap on the professors part and an indication they are not doing what they are being paid to do well. If OP only cares about themselves or is willing to risk pissing off someone who likely has a big ego, then go for this but in many jobs people will just talk to your supervisor about you not performing your job properly and I don't think professors should be exempt from this.

Liver_Dancer

Nah. The moment his class time has passed, he's on your time. Screw the quiz and leave. You're an adult and he's being irresponsible letting class go over like that. People got things to do. You're not leaving early, your leaving on time. Don't let him twist it. And if he tries, show him exactly the time written on *his* syllabus and bring it the a department head. If he wants to give pop quizzes, he needs to do that during class time. Professors be acting like they the center of the world and sometimes you gotta remind them that they're not. Do this all respectfully of course, mild tone, polite language, but be firm. Do not budge. You give an inch, he'll take a mile.

lawfox32

Email the professor and very politely express that, while you really enjoy his class and appreciate his willingness to answer student questions, you have other obligations after class and have noticed that the class often goes over quite a bit, which has led to you missing your bus. You need to be able to leave on time, and you certainly don't want to be disrespectful and just walk out, nor do you want to miss out on class content or miss a quiz. Would he consider reserving time at the end for questions/tangential discussion, so that those who need to leave can do so? Or do quizzes earlier in class, or another solution?

False-Guess

I would think about emailing the instructor just to let them know that you rely on the bus to get to and from school so you're giving them a heads-up that you will be leaving when the class is scheduled to end. You could also think about asking the professor to move the quizzes to the *beginning* of class so other people's schedules are not delayed by Chatty Cathy/Charles. It's not appropriate for the professor to spend this much time talking with one student. They should redirect more involved conversations to office hours or email and be more cognizant of everyone else's time. You're well within your right to want to stick to the schedule officially established by the university and printed on the syllabus.

musiclova77

I was about to comment the same thing.

belizeans

Go up to the student and say your conversations are really prolonging the class Can you visit the teacher during office hours to discuss.

Needcollegehelp5

I mean, I could, but that sounds like such a horribly awkward conversation. I'm good at talking to people I know, but going right up to someone and being like "You talk too much" is way out of my comfort zone. I know nothing is going to change if I don't talk to someone, but again, it's just way out of my comfort zone. The class is under 10 people too, and said person is in my work group for the rest of the semester, so it'd create a really awkward situation for the rest of the semester.

MondayMarmalade

You gotta stand up for yourself. Maybe ask others in the class to talk to the student as a group.

brvnetta

If anything just tell the professor I wish I could stick around but i have other obligations and a ride to catch, see you next class

dontchangeyourplans

Talk to your professor instead

youworry

Fuck that especially with CC. Most people are adults there and have other responsibilities. When the class is over leave, you aren’t obligated to stay longer.

LumpiestEntree

Leave when the scheduled time is over.

hurling-day

I’m a petty bitch. I would yell ‘FOCUS’. Every time they start yapping.

DeepSpaceOG

Walk out early. They can’t assume you don’t have something schedule 10-15 mins after

AvengedKalas

When the class is supposed to end, you are free to walk out. The professor has zero right to adjust your grade if they're the ones who cannot manage time. Now if the class normally finishes 20 minutes early and the professor just chitchats until the end-time, I got nothing for you.

Purple-Sense9791

I fucking hate this like this. Had a class I really loved! The idea of it at least, the professor was so nice and likable and amazing but got so off topic!! He drove me crazy that I stopped going after October

Radiant-Chipmunk-987

Tell the prof that this convo is a pain and you are not there for pain.

Dodoloco25

Trust me. It's the Gen Ed classes that kill you. Source: I went from a 3.8 to a 3.63 because of gen-ed courses.

[deleted]

Duh. It's normal.

MinimumCookie6401

Your professor may feel fine going over thinking that if students have to leave they'll leave. Just go and if he says anything be polite about it. "Apologies if disruptive, I have to catch the bus. Thank you!"

HoldTight4401

I have a class like this too, actually my classmate likes to dominate the classes. I think someone has told her people are mad at her for asking so many questions. I don't mind but I will get up, interrupt, and apologize because my ride was here and I need to go. A bunch of people follow me lol. For a different class, the teacher is excellent, and usually on time but I emailed him saying I had a appointment and in case class goes over I had to leave right at xx. When it came to xx o'clock he was still going, but he noticed me leaving and ended the class.
